ford explorer 2010 Complaints

SEATS:FRONT ASSEMBLY:HEAD RESTRAINT

tl*the contact owns a 2010 ford explorer. the headrest on the driver and passenger extends outward which forces the passenger and drivers head forward. the contact has experienced discomfort while driving even when he attempted to rest his shoulders against the back of the seat. the vehicle was purchased seven days ago without him test driving it. the dealer advised the contact that they were unable to make any repairs since all of 2010 ford explorers were designed with that type of headrest. the dealer recommended that the contact rotate the headrest; however, the driver stated that the headrest would not serve it?s purpose. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 100.

SEATS

the head rest on my 2010 ford explorer leans so far forward that it forces my head down and forward. the dealer cannot adjust it so that you can sit normally. the only recourse is to remove the head rest. this is a safety issue because you can't drive with it and removing it removes any protection.

SEATS

just bought a new 2010 explorer, trading in our 2006. since this is our seventh explorer, we didn't bother with a test drive. what a mistake!!! when we were driving home, we were both very uncomfortable - the head restraints were angled so far forward that we could not get comfortable. we primarily use the vehicle for long trips, so that will be a major problem. i just spent a few hours researching the problem, and there doesn't seem to be a solution; and it's not just a ford problem. apparently they have to be that way to minimize whiplash in a rear-end collision. the ones on the 2006 weren't like these, so they must have been defective or deficient (note to all you 2006 owners - maybe you can sue ford if you get a whiplash injury) i've been driving for over 50 years, and never had a rear end collision, so i'm going to choose comfort over the unlikely chance that i'll need the head restraint and either reverse it (then it won't work) or take it out!!

SEATS

the head rests on our 2010 ford explorer limited have such a severe forward pitch to them that they make it very uncomfortable to sit for any length of time. dealer says nothing can be done. prior to purchase we test drove numerous other competitive vehicles and did not experience this same issue. after 11 months of ownership and almost 14,000 miles it is becoming a safety issue for us. i am seriously considering removing the head rests and driving without them. i have tried other work arounds, reclining the seats to make the head rest angle more acceptable, but this defeats the safety of the seat belt system. i've also tried raising the head rest to it's maximum extension, but that defeats the value of the head rest. what ford needs to do is replace the 2010 head rests with one from an earlier model. nhtsa should force ford to recall these head rests as hazardous.

SEATS

i have a 2010 ford explorer. the front passenger seat headrests are pitched excessively forward causing extreme head and neck discomfort. the only way to alleviate this stress is to recline the seat to the point where your head doesn't contact the headrest. this puts stress on your neck muscles causing stiffness and headaches. this is a defective design that must be corrected. when i brought the vehicle in for servicing at 4000 miles i informed the service manager who told me he gets lots of complaints about the head restraint and there was nothing he could do about it. perhaps ford can proactively cite a replacement headrest from one of its other models. i am now taking muscle relaxants every night to relieve the stress on my neck.

SEATS

the active head restraint system in the 2010 ford explorer pushes my head forward when i sit straight in the seat. i cannot find a comfortable position where the "active restraint" is not actively pushing my head forward. i understand the necessity of minimizing space between the head and restraint when in a rear-end collision, but car manufacturers have overcompensated, causing severe neck pain for those who sit straight in their seats. this is a problem not only because it's uncomfortable and potentially causes neck pain but also because drivers have no other safe option. the options are: 1) remove the head restraint, 2) turn the head restraint backwards, or 3) bend the bars so the restraint is not angled forward as dramatically. please offer a solution to this problem. otherwise, the restraint guidelines will create more safety issues than they were meant to remedy.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

while driving on interstate 295 just south of brunswick, maine my 2010 ford explorer lost all power and rapidly decelerated and the steering wheel became very difficult to turn. i did manage to pull over to the side of the highway just before losing all power, but i could not restart my vehicle. i then had my vehicle towed to a ford service center, and ford indicated that the problem was caused by friction which had worn away the electrical tape and wire casing of the electrical node and the wiring harness around the fuel tank. i am concerned about the safety of other drivers should a similar incident happen under heavier highway traffic conditions.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

capless fuel filler adapter broken off when gas pump nozzle inserted due to poor ford design which causes it to break off very easily . there was a pseudo recall that requires the check engine light be on which is not the case with my car . many ford owners have the same issue . ford should provide complete replacement as this capless fuel fill assembly/system was not designed and built properly. this condition makes much more difficult to insert pump nozzle into car. not sure if this is a safety issue. thank you

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

bought car from bates ford in lebanon, tn new. within the first 1500 mile i experienced at least one incident where i tried to stop but the vehicle continued to accelerate. the car has about 36000 miles now and both my wife and i have had numerous incidents of this the last resulted in a traffic accident in plano, texas. there were 3 vehicles involved.the plano, texas police officer who drove the car to a safe location found no problem with the brakes. early in my career i was a police officer whose specialty was traffic investigation. i heard similar explainations for accident and in perhaps one fatal accident found that a brake line ruputured contributing to the accident cause. this acceleration when braking in a sudden stop has happened to both my wife and i numerouse times in 36,000 miles and i have checked the brakes more than once finding no problem with the brakes. i learned from a body shop employee at sam pack who related that he had heard this same complaint before includining from a family member. i believe that what is really happening is that drivers with this feature step on both the gas pedal and the brake . in a panic situation i believe that drivers are stepping on both pedals due to settings that allow the gas pedal to overide the brake or diminish the effectiveness of stopping distance. i can duplicate this effect and think that it is a design flaw that occurs thousands of times each day, has surely resulted in many accidents and possibly deaths.i do not believe this is a brake problem and service departments dismiss the complaints when they find no problems with the brakes. this is a design and safety issue that needs to be addressed by ford.

WHEELS

the car was just under 3 years old and just past it's warranty mileage. we started the car to drive it, and it was making a grinding noise and felt like someone was pressing on the brakes while accelerating. we then put the car in park and got out, and it started to roll. our son was in the car at the time and luckily my husband still had one foot in the car to be able to pull the emergency brake. towed to the dealership and were told that it was a wheel bearing issue in the front wheel. we reported this to ford, at which time the service manager at the beechmont ford in cincinnati told us that "wheel bearing issues are synonymous with ford explorers." fast forward to july 2014, we are driving the car and alarm bells start going off. same symptoms, towed to a different dealership, the mike castrucci ford in milford, ohio. this time it's the other front wheel bearing. talked to ford customer care regional representative again, at first he tried to imply that it's the way we drive the car (even though we have kept other cars for 10 years and longer and never had this issue), then tried to imply that we go off-roading (also not true, just normal highway and city roads) and then he told me the only way a recall will be issued is if the government feels there is a safety issue. so this tells me that they are a) aware that it's an issue with the way a ford explorer is constructed and b) not going to recall this car or part until enough people are injured or killed. we are still in the process of trying to get financial assistance from ford to fix this wheel bearing issue on the front wheel, both times we have called them every day for over a week and no one will return our call. but we can basically count on the rear wheel bearing going bad next year and having to go through this again.
