POWER TRAIN

when my cruise is on and i have a steep incline to approach, once i am down the incline, the vehicle shifts from 6th gear down to 4th or 5th gear and stays there. my dealer has run diagnostics on this 4 times now, and still no answer. i have bulletin number #09-06-04-019 issued 3-23-09 and my vehicle is having all the problems listed. it is supposed to have the latest software, but it still has the problem. i have requested another vehicle as they have been working on the problem since it was 2 weeks old and it is now 6 weeks old. this happens everytime i have it on cruise on this type of incline. what other corrections have been made to repair this problem?

POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

on about 4 occasions in the 5 weeks i have had my car, the gears have been appearing to skip. i have been stopped at lights and when i go again and press the gas it jumps a gear and lunges the car forward. this week it happened for the 4th or 5th time and this time i hit someone because they ended up stopping in front of me but my car lunged forward like it was skipping gears. it has also on a couple of occasions downgraded quickly like it was dropping two shift speeds at once.

POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

on more then 5 occasions during normal driving with my new car on a slight (10 degree) incline at a stop sign or light will roll backwards intermittently as if the shifter was in neutral. from the time it take for me to move my right foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal the car will roll back at least 4 feet until i either hit the brake again or accelerator to stop the roll. the car has 2,5 on it and this issue has gone on since i bought the car. the same problem occurs when in reverse the car will role forward on an incline.

tpms (tire pressure monitoring system) on the 2009 chevrolet traverse constantly goes on and off. at this point it is useless since the tires always check out ok by the dealer. they simply reset the unit and move on.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

since i bought my car, i've had problems with acceleration and deceleration be very erratic. it seems to shift down and up at the wrong times. it's very inconsistent as i travel the same route each day to work, i never know what it's going to do. sometimes it lurches ahead and the rpm's are all over the place, and downshifts when it really shouldn't. i've taken it in for repair, they put the latest computer chip in it, which maybe helped a little. still for the most part it's the worst car i've ever driven-as a passenger it feels like the driver is either using the accelerator or brake way too often, when in fact, the driver is just trying to provide a smooth acceleration or braking, but the car has a mind of it's own.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

i own a 2009 traverse that was taken to the garage for what appears to be a hesitation in acceleration. engine sort of sputters. in a straight acceleration and when in turns. the garage said that this is a common "trait" in the traverses computer but that it is not an issue or defect. they say that they can "refresh the computer" but that i would "lose 2mpg" when they do it. one tech even said "this is sort of like the toyota issue". to me (a computer systems engineer) it sounds like the computer has a bug in it and needs fixed or replaced. the thought of losing 2mpg in a suv is not very desirable but i cannot believe that this engine hesitation is not causing damage to the engine itself. how is this not a potential safety issue if i am trying to avoid a vehicle? my chevy dealer said that they would call corporate but that "it would take several days". i notice that you already have one complaint re: a 2010 chevy traverse. this is clearly a potential safety issue!!

SEAT BELTS

we have a 2009 chevy traverse 8 passenger vehicle - the center row seat belts are the most poor design imaginable. they put the center seat belt buckle as a rigid outlet in the middle of the center seat. we have two car seats in our car & due to foster care need to be able to put in a booster seat in the middle - the car will not accept a booster seat because of the poor design. it is shocking that chevy did not put in a belt based seat belt here instead! i have seen a lot of people complaining about this & it really needs to be addressed by chevy!

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE

2009 traverse purchased 4/30/2009. from the start it had a check engine light on but no symptoms of failure. we took it to dealer 1 on 9/02/2010, with 22,753 miles. they replaced wiring under engine plenum to #1 ignition coils. a couple of days later, the check engine light came back on. at this time the car started to lose power on the freeway sometimes. we took it to dealer 2 on 10/11/2010, they had to get parts and did a temporary fix. we brought it back on 11/1/2010, with 24,656 miles on it and they supposedly fixed it. they replaced connectors in the junction box, saying it was an electrical problem. the light was back on within a few days, and the car was still losing power. we took it to dealer 3 on 2/09/2011, with 30,287 miles for check engine light, and loss of power. they replaced ecm and all 6 coils. the day we left the shop, the light was back on and within a day the car was losing power again. back to the shop on 2/17/11. this time they replaced the catalytic converter. the day after we left the shop the light was back on. they told us it needed a small adjustment and to bring it back on 3/05/11. we went to the shop and the mechanic did not know how to fix it. after being there for a few hours and calling chevy 800 #, they told us to come back next week. on 3/06/11, the car was losing power so bad that we wanted to take it back to the shop, but they were closed. on 3/07/11 the traverse started losing power, and then died. it lost all power and the brakes failed as a result. we had to slam on the emergency brake to not have an accident, and were lucky to not be rear ended. the car has been at the shop the week of 3/07/11-3/11/11. they told us the car is misfiring on all cylinders and dumping raw gas into the exhaust. on 3/11/11 they called to state that they are replacing the catalytic converter (again) and the module and returning the vehicle on 3/14/11.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

my 2009 traverse accelerates when it wants to. the rpm are going nuts but the truck is slowing down when you give it gas it does nothing for one or two seconds. extra passengers and there weight make it even worse . chevy dealer is baffled. problem still unsolved. i think that if i keep driving it this way it's going to lead to bigger problems. chevy should just recall all traverses with this same problem.

STEERING

i began noticing that my steering wheel would make a clicking noise. then a while later, i began to notice it was increasingly harder to make sharp left/right turns into parking spaces. i took in my vehicle at 53,000 miles and they said the steering gear had failed. it took 2 days to repair and almost $1400. then i'm driving the car less than a day and can't again turn into a parking space. i cranked the wheel with all my might to get it parked. i took my car back and they now say it's a power steering failure! why does a 2 1/2 yr old car have failing parts?!

STEERING

when my vehicle was 2 years old and had approximately 35,900 miles, i started hearing a low whining noise in the steering column whenever the steering wheel was turned. the intermittent noise continued, so i had the vehicle serviced on 2/18/11 with mileage of 36,379. the dealership was unable to duplicate the noise. the noise continued getting worse; became louder and constant. i had the vehicle serviced on 8/24/11 with mileage of 44,248. the dealership determined the steering gear was failing and needed replacement. since the vehicle was no longer under warranty, i had to pay $1212.80. it's very disheartening to have a repair of this magnitude on a 2 year old vehicle with low mileage. i purchased this traverse brand new to avoid the costly repairs of older vehicles. apparently, i made a bad decision. this vehicle has already had 3 safety recalls and the steering gear should be made the 4th.

approximately a week after taking it to dealership for diagnostic check on steering problems, my truck started making noise. i took it to several mechanics and they all seem to think it was related to the timing chain. as time progressed the noise got exceedingly worse and used an extensive amount of gas. my car is currently not operating and it has approximately 120k miles. i contacted gm and they stated the problem occurred due to the amount of usage. after checking the website www.chevytraverseforum.com i discovered that many other consumers experienced the same problem; however, their usage was much lower, i.e. 19k posted by cotton-smith, 20k heather and mark, 21k judih, to name a few. sensor code was p0017 i contacted the gm consumer line listed on their website to no avail. requesting an investigation be conducted on the issues relating to timing chains/engine problems.

steering was making a whining sound when turning the wheel. this happened within 3 months of purchase of the vehicle. since it was under warranty, chevy "fixed" the problem. 2 years later after the "fix" the steering is again making the whining sound when turning the wheel. the vehicle is no longer under warranty. we haven't yet had chevy look at the problem again, but judging by the other complaints in the nhtsa database, we will likely have to shell out over $1000 to get this problem fixed again.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

1st. my wife was pulling out of a parking spot and had to stop quickly, then when she proceeded to leave again by letting off the brake - the car rolled forward on a slight incline and hit the car parked next to her. when she removed her foot to the gas - nothing she could do to prevent this incident. 2nd. while in the drive position on a hill at a stop sign or traffic signal, i removed my foot from the brake. the vehicle began to roll back almost hitting the vehicle behind me. we further tested the vehicle on various hills/inclines both in drive and reverse and it continued to roll in the opposite direction of the engaged gear. apparently, this is a characteristic of the automatic transmission on this vehicle, the service consultant at courtesy chevrolet of orlando, said this is a flaw in the power train and theirs no known fix. he advised us not to drive it to the mountains if it were him. since our suv is for my vacations and primary use, we are very concerned for our safety. we can't afford another vehicle since we had saved up for the down payment for this car. i saw there are a lot of complains of the same case, it was mentioned until someone dies and/or the family files a lawsuit - no recall or action will be done to fix this! please help in address this issue. i set up a facebook page to address this concern: http://www.facebook.com/chevytraversedeathtrap.

STEERING

turning left against traffic steering wheel locked in place for a few seconds and then released quickly causing a very unsafe condition of turning hard with nothing and then almost u-turning with too much turning strength. there is no warning of steering stoppage. it was out of warranty and dealer suggested changing fluid as it was over 100k miles. took to independent shop and was told i need a rack and pinion. r & p was replaced and problem still existed. oem r & p replaced and problem still there. there is a steering solenoid that was replaced because it was full of dirty steering fluid. that did not repair it either. there is a pressure relief valve in the power steering pump that failed intermittently and the whole pump needed to be replaced. it appears the traverse is having a lot of "steering issues". this traverse has a lot of highway miles and the problem took a while to develop. i have been talking to chevrolet about this and they do not want to acknowledge a "problem". i spent $1200 having this issue resolved. when the steering first reacted this way, i felt in danger with the oncoming traffic, and the steering went violent when it released causing another dangerous situation of turning too far into more traffic. as i look at steering problems with this model there are numerous complaints and if mileage piles up a dangerous condition will occur and possible wrecks.

STRUCTURE

the first problem is that the second row, middle seat belt gets stuck after putting the row down flat. you have to put the row up and down a few times for it to start working. sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't. i read about recalls on the model of my vehicle and this issue is listed as one of the recalls. chevrolet and gm insist that my "vin#" is not listed under the recalls, so it has to be diagnosed and dealt with as a normal problem. this is listed as a safety hazard with the recall because it may not restrain as it should, god forbid, during an accident. the second problem is there is a leak in the cargo hold. whenever it rains, (a little or a lot, it doesn't matter) water pools in the cargo hold. this is a safety hazard because now the vehicle smells of mold. there are many other problems as well. there is a problem with one of the tire sensors, the car shakes and the check engine light is on.

as we were driving along an on ramp to a highway as we reached 55mph the vehicle was sluggish and would "pull" constantly as we tried to accelerate all the way until we reached 65-70 mph. this started happening more and more frequently even while driving at lower speeds on city streets. again getting that "pulling" or "bucking" sensation as we tried to accelerate. we took the vehicle to the dealership and they returned it stating they found no error codes and could not duplicate the problem. after another month of the same thing happening almost daily on every commute we took the vehicle in again to the dealership. this time they were able to duplicate the "issue" and said the cause of this problem was the motor mounts which they replaced. this made absolutely no sense and sure enough the vehicle still has the same issue to this very day. 2nd issue is the steering going completely out as you make turns going at slower speeds such as making a left hand turn or turning in to a parking space. as i started making a turn in to a parking space i had to slam on the brakes to avoid hitting the car next to the empty space i was trying to go into because it felt like the "power steering" went out and could not turn the wheel at all. we have taken the vehicle to the dealership and power steering fluid and pump are working "fine" according to mechanics. i can not believe there has not been a recall on this issue since many traverse owners have the same problem which is a major safety concern especially when we are talking about not being able to control a vehicle going around 25-30 mph in a parking lot or making turns in front of oncoming traffic (left turns). please help with these issues.

since mid-'10, our '09 traverse has had issues with the power steering. when the problem first surfaced, it was primarily limited to sharp turns into parking spaces. the steering would seize and it would be difficult to turn into the spot. we took the traverse to the dealer in 10/10 when the mileage was 21,129. the problem was diagnosed as an "internal steering gear failure (binding). the power steering gear was replaced and the power steering system bled. the problem seemed better. the seizing occurred much less. however, in the past few months we noticed a rapid decline. now the problem has surfaced when driving down the road and trying to make a turn (left or right) onto another road/driveway/etc. the wheel seizes so much that my husband is almost incapable of turning the wheel. this is a serious safety hazard. we brought the vehicle into the dealer on 5/22/13 when the mileage was 61,287. this time the problem was diagnosed as "steering gear leaking". the dealer stated that the problem was not covered under warranty, but because the problem was not properly addressed back in october 2010 (when it was covered), they would do us a favor and cover it at a pro-rated amount. the repair (replacing the power steering gear for a second time and bleeding the power steering system) only cost us $456 out of pocket. two days later the problem resurfaced, and even worse than before. i will not drive the car anymore, out of fear that i am not strong enough to turn the wheel if the problem occurs. i fear for my family's safety when we are riding in it. we have an appointment at the dealership for this friday. hopefully this time it will be repaired. i am not optimistic. it is inexcusable that there is not a recall on this issue yet. this website, and several others, reveal that hundreds -- if not thousands -- of vehicle owners are experiencing this same issue.

from reading all the post i don't see why chevy haven't recalled this traverse. my wife has a 2009 chevy traverse, she complained she was having a hard time turning the wheel. then she says it got to the point where the wheel would lock up mid turn. i drove it and every now and then i felt it get a little stiff. but one day on the way home from store i'm driving, at a light turning red i turn, the car in on coming traffic decide not to stop. i had plenty of time to turn and get out his way (so i thought) mid turn the wheel locked. i had to hit the gas to get out of the way, instead of making the left turn i ended up making a u-turn and was almost rear-ended. took car to dealer, they tell me the rack is gone and it will cost $1400, well i just paid my girls college tuition and i'm a little short of $1400 about $1399. so i had to have my wife park the car until we can get the money to get it fixed, but if they know of the problem why don't they do the right thing. i'm just glad i was driving when this happened and not my wife or my daughters.

the 2009 chevrolet traverse has known steering problems, power steering pump, gears, etc. in talking to the local dealership, chevy knows of this issue but continues to offer no assistance in a solution. according to the service technician, the problem is based on a poor design in the pump housing and gear assembly with the power steering, as he states..."the pump is too small". the problem is in turning at low speeds, turning into parking spaces, driveways, or secondary roads. the steering wheel shakes or feels like a loss in power, and the steering wheel is almost impossible to turn. the dealership states that the cost to replace the pump and gear is an estimated 1200.00. this issue needs to be resolved by chevy, not the consumer.

no incident occurred, but i had the autonation delray beach, fl gm dealership service technician look into why the steering wheel would squeal when making slow speed turns, with the sharper the turn, the louder the squeal. reading the other posts, i am guessing he knew right away what the noise was from without really having to investigate. after their "inspection", the gm service rep gave me a call and indicated that the steering rack needed to be replaced because it was leaking fluid. and this leak would over time cause internal parts to overheat and potentially cause a lack in steering capabilities. after saying yes to the repairs/replacement, i started thinking that this might be something that should be covered under the warranty. as was the experience with other posters, the gm service rep indicated gm is currently not considering this a warranty repair or recall repair. as taxpayers, don't we still own a part of gm? or maybe they were able to pay us back using the costly repairs dollars we have been paying out for repairs that i would say definitely fall under the recall category? i feel fortunate steering never locked up on me, but it sounds like these repairs to the steering components don't guarentee no future issues.

2009 chevy traverse lost steering control on the freeway almost making the vehicle uncontrollable as exiting the off ramp. had care been driven by my wife, she would not have had the strength to get the vehicle under control and likely would have resulted in a serious accident. subsequent investigation on the internet revealed that hundreds and hundreds of others have experienced the same malfunction. the suv just barely turned 5 years old and has only been used in normal driving conditions. this is a very serious component defect that will ultimately cost lives, if not already. please cross reference all of the similar complaints for all of the gm lamda platform vehicles which are virtually the same vehicle, same components, but are rebadged with different bodies and interior for each gm brand. this would include saturn outlook, gmc acadia, chevrolet traverse, and buick enclave....all with the same steering components.

starting in june of last year, the power steering in my car goes out suddenly when making turns at slower speeds. it happened intermittently last summer, didn't happen much over the colder months and now happens just about every time i make a turn. used to only happen when turning into parking spots, has now happened a few times when turning on to side streets. a few times i ended up on the berm or grass because the wheel was so hard to turn. the power steering goes out without warning. i'm afraid it may happen when going at higher speeds and i'll end up in a bad accident. i've heard there is a class action lawsuit against gm for this very problem, but haven't heard if it's been rectified. it's ridiculous that these cars have not yet been recalled! gm is putting millions of lives in danger.

bought this 2009 chev traverse used in 2011 w 17,000mi. in 2012 at approx 40,000 mi, out of warranty (of course) i notice that in a slow or stopped position and trying to turn the wheel (ie backed out of driveway in reverse at slight angle, put into drive to finish turn to drive away, the power steering acts like it is gone and is now manual steering. this doesn't happen every time but is very intermittent. next time into dealer on transmission seal recall, i mentioned this as it continued for about a year, happening every day for a week, nothing for two weeks, again for a week, etc. when they did the recall work on the seal, it also stopped the random failure of the power steering. always at low speed or stopped, either direction. now at 72,000 mi, it is still doing it more often. gave up on dealer and had a shop power flush the steering system. did not fix the failure. had a real battle turning the wheel when adjusting my parking into a stall in a parking garage. very frustrating. i see other gm vehicles getting recalled for power steering issues. hoping mine is next. was told next would be to either replace the power steering pump at approx $800 or the rack and pinion at approx $1800. not excited about either but if continues to worsen, won't have much choice. very disappointed in this vehicle and poor service at the dealer where i bought it. will not go back for service or to buy, period. i see others mentioning what reads like the same exact issue in this forum. i too am very concerned about family members driving it as well as myself if it occurs at higher speed and motion. no leaks and shop said pwr steering fluid level was fine before flush. said they didn't know but i said try the flush which was the less expensive option, thinking something was flowing and blocking the pump action. what is the story gm?

towards the end of 2013 my wife and i started noticing the steering being really difficult and locking up on some occasions pulling into parking spaces and parallel parking. we experienced some near misses where the steering locked and felt like we were going to collide with the vehicle in the next parking space. we took our car to the dealership in june 2014 to have the air bag recall done and a state inspection. we also told the dealer that the coolant level was consistently staying low and the steering almost locks up at times. the dealer said the steering gear (or rack and pinion) was bad. the dealer would not pass the inspection. state inspections are performed to ensure safe vehicle conditions. if a gm dealer is not willing to perform a state inspection they are admitting this is a safety issue. the dealer performed the air bag fix, and replaced the water pump (from the coolant level complaint, prior tsb). they said the steering gear fix would have to be scheduled the following week. after two days the check engine light came on (c1100 and p00008). we scheduled the appointment to have the steering gear replaced because we were unsure if the steering would lock up on a normal turn while driving. the dealer said the c1100 was a loose cable at the control board and the p00008 was a bad timing chain (replaced under a prior tsb). the steering gear was replaced and the cost was $1,552. after reading similar complaints from other owners of chevy traverse vehicles this is a systemic issue due to a poor design steering gear. gm should make the right decision and stand behind their quality in a proactive way and issue a recall to have these steering gears replaced before someone gets injured.

the power steering failed on our 2009 traverse at low speeds while parking the vehicle. this type of power steering failure has happened before. we had the rack and pinion replaced (6 months ago) and the power steering fluid upgraded with limited success. the traverse feels like it has no power steering and it is difficult to turn. we have had the traverse checked at the dealership numerous times and finally paid a lot of $$$ to have the rack and pinion replaced. it did not solve the problem. this is a serious safety issue. it would be impossible to avoid an accident by turning the vehicle. your only options are to stop and "man handle" the traverse into position. an elderly person or a smaller person would not be able to control the vehicle at all. i am taking the traverse back to the dealership. this is an on-going issue for the past 3-4 years. there are a lot of similar complaints on the nhtsa website. gm has re-designed the newer traverse/encore/acadia steering systems, so they know a problem exists. one day someone will get killed from this steering problem and everyone will wonder why a recall wasn't issued. some type of action needs to take place with this problem. i can afford (barely) to keep shelling out thousands for repairs, but what about those people who can's? they bought a $35-$45,000 vehicle from gm and it is not safe. now they can't afford to sell/trade it and they might not be able to afford to fix it. action needs to be taken to fix this problem.
