tl*the contact owns a 2008 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that he was locked inside his vehicle for approximately three to three and a half hours with no way out. onstar attempted to get the contact out, but was unsuccessful. only the rear latch would open from the outside. aaa was able to open one of the doors. the following day, the contact had to have a friend let him out of the back door of the vehicle. the dealer stated that they did not know what caused the malfunction. the vehicle is currently in the shop. the current and failure mileages were approximately 3,638. updated 03-04-08 *bf

my brand new chevy hhr will allow rocks and road debris to ruin the radiator and the a/c condenser then they will not fix under warranty. this car will keep having this problem, i cant keep buying 600 dollar radiators every 3 months.

tl*the contact owns a 2008 chevrolet hhr ss. when the vehicle is started in cold weather, the braking system takes approximately one minute to function. the brakes use an optimized assist and the brakes would respond slowly. it causes the brakes to respond slowly. the contact is concerned that the vehicle will be unable to stop immediately in the case of an emergency. the manufacturer is aware of the failure, but are not making consumers aware. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer on january 24, 2008 for repairs. the dealer did not replace any components. the manufacturer was notified and stated that the dealer could reference the tsb for that particular failure. the contact informed the manufacturer that a tsb repair was unacceptable. the manufacturer sent out an investigator, but he could not recommend a repair for the failure. the current mileage was 2,000 and failure mileage was 8. updated 04-03-08 *bf the consumer stated when he first gets into the vehicle, and places te vehicle into reverse, the power brakes would not work for a short period of time. the brake pedal is hard to press to midway point, and then the brakes pulsate. after the vehicle has ran for about 30 seconds to a minute, the power brakes brakes began to work fine. it is only when the vehicle seets for an extended perioed of time does the problem arise.

hhr ss has a hard pedal and does not stop easily on in a normal distance. this has occurred 4 times after sitting in cold weather for an extended period. it takes about a minute of warm-up to have the hard pedal-non braking to correct to normal.

when the vehicle sits overnight or a long period of time there will be no brakes or a very hard peddle when started for at least 30 sec to 1 min. i almost ran into garage door but managed to stop the vehicle using the emergency brake. this has occurred 3 times since i purchased the vehicle 3 weeks ago current mileage is 653. vehicle has been at the service dept. 2 times for the tsb but now the dealer and gm says they have no fix for this issue.

i have a 2008 chevy hhr ss with 13000 miles on it. i have had it in the shop three times for brakes not working. the problems are that the pads coming delaminated and the turbo pulling the vacuum from the brakes. after checking on various web sites like edmonds, i have found that this is common problem.

2008 hhr ss turbo - dealer replaced previous 2008 hhr ss turbo that had braking issues at 200 mile. this new car has same exact problem. at startup after the car has been sitting for about 10 hours the brakes do not have enough vacuum inorder to work properly. you have to wait about 120 seconds before there enough vacuum to engage the brakes. until enough vacuum is present the brakes fail to stop the vehicle on any kind of minimal slope. dealer has upgraded the software per the manufacturer recommendation but the problem still exists. dealer recommend that the user sit for 60 seconds before removing the vehicle from park. this is unacceptable and a safety hazard. i have tried two separate vehicles that are identical and they both have the same problem. the is a fix for the saturn sky and pontiac solstice i am told but none for the chevy.

2008 hhr ss, on startup, power assist brakes do not function properly for 30-90 seconds, after which they work properly. this was first identified when i started my vehicle and began exiting my driveway the other day. a dog ran in front of my car, and i had to apply an exceptional amount of force to the brakes to keep from hitting the animal. after some web research (see especially http://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/showthread.php?t=17740), it appears that this is a common problem for the vehicle, and so i believe it is important that you intervene on behalf of public safety to get general motors to resolve the issue quickly.

i have a 2008 hhr ss, that has a braking problem when first started or has set for approx. 8 hours. i have almost ran out of our parking lot into traffic. i have had it in the dealership twice. first time they reprogrammed the ecm. problem continues and the second time, i was told that the factory says this is a normal characteristic of the 2.0 engine and turbo. the dealership gave me a copy of service bulletin and at the end ,it states (do not attempt to repair or replace any parts for what is considered normal operation of the ohb). bulletin number is 07-05-22-002. the second bulletin number give to me by the dealership is 08-05-22-001. the following optimized hydraulic brake (ohb) #1-ratchet sound coming from the brake system during ohb activation. #2-brake pedal movement or pulsation when ohb is active. #3-increased brake pedal effort under low brake booster vacuum. #4-change in brake pedal effort when ohb is active. #5-frequent brake stops may result in ohb activation. #6-high altitude driving may result in ohb activation. the way i read all this is when ohb activates, you may have braking problems. i have talked to two different people in customer service and all i could get out of them was (this is normal characteristics of the hhr with turbo). the dealership contacted gm and they say the same thing and there is not a cure for this problem and it is normal for the turbo models. i guess when a few people gets killed they may try to find a fix. my vehicle now has less than 3000 miles and i noticed the problem around 100 or so miles. i have owned 25 gm vehicles in my days and this is the first having normal characteristics for not stopping. if you have an accident and possibly kill someone, how can you explain this to the police, when the police gets in the car and the ohb is not activated and the brake pedal seems normal, you are in trouble and may never prove at that time the brakes honestly did fail. if gm can,t fix the problem they should buy the cars back.

i am having a problem with the brakes on my new 2008 chevrolet hhr/ss. when first applying brakes after initial start-up and after sitting long enough for vacuum to leak down. there is an increased effort to apply and travel of pedal is also increased. pedal is spongy and booster is inoperative until vacuum is restored by revving engine or driving a short distance. this vehicle is equipped with a turbo and vacuum/boost gauge. the initial vacuum is dropped when applying brake. it has been in for this problem twice, left overnight both times, and duplicated both times. the dealer reprogrammed computer per service letter. the second time they supposedly ordered a mastercylinder but still no parts have been changed, probably not even examined! now they tell me this is normal operation and i tell them it's not! the dealer service mgr. has told me that gm knows about this but have no repair available. he blames it on the turbo! it is surely a vacuum leak or booster problem yet they seem unable to understand! i have been a mechanic for 30+ years and i know this is dangerous and needs to be repaired before someone gets hurt! the dealer doesn't even want me to bring it back in as they say "it cannot be fixed, it is a design problem!"

i have a 2008 chevy hhr ss turbo with automatic transmission it has only about 1400 miles on it, and i have had it back to the dealership 3 times for the brakes. after sitting for a period of time, like overnight or while at work for 12 hours when i first get into the car the brakes don't work. they are very hard and have to be pumped several times before they work. i done my research and chevy is aware of the problem but don't have the fix available yet. i was told by the dealership that i'll just have to live with it. not an acceptable answer. hopefully i won't get in a wreck because of it. the dealership is making me bring the rent a car back and making me drive an unsafe vehicle.

i have a 2008 hhr ss with the 2.0l turbo engine that in my opinion has a severe brake problem. when the car starts up after being left off for a period of time the brakes do not apply pressure properly making it difficult to stop. most times the problem goes away as the car warms up and is being driven. i took the vehicle to the dealership and they programmed the vehicles computer and told me that was the fix. they described the fix as adjusting the anti-lock brakes to compensate for the loss of pressure. this only helped slightly and now when the engine is cold if i apply pressure to the brakes i can feel the abs pulsating and even with full pressure applied the car jerks when stopped and even inches forward when at stop lights and stop signs until the car has warmed up for at least a few minutes. i do not think the "fix" of programming the vehicles computer is adequate and when i called back about the problems after the dealership applied their fix they told me that is all they can do. they also said they have had many reported issues of drivers of the same vehicle having similar problems so it appears to be wide spread enough to constitute a permanent fix.

my 2008 chevy hhr ss brakes do not have power assist on a cold start. after thirty seconds or more the brakes work fine. unless i wait for the brakes to warm up there is not enough brake power to stop the vehicle in a normal manner. it seems to take twice as long to stop. when i apply the brakes the pedal goes to the floor and vibrates. gm says this is a normal characteristic of the vehicle and that is does not pose a safety issue. i disagree, if a drive neglects to let the brakes "warm up" he or she could potentially run a child over or just not stop in time to avoid an accident. this is only an issue on the ss models.

chevy hhr 2008 - complete electrical failure while attempting to enter traffic from home depot parking lot. couldn't unlock doors or window to escape vehicle. called 911 fairfield ct, fire dept responded to open vehicle. trapped inside for 15 minutes. problem with car's fuse box, cutting off all electrical power just 10 minutes earlier traveling at 60 mph on i-95.

i currently own a 2008 chevy hhr that i purchased in august. my complaint is on the back passenger doors. in several occassions my kids have not closed the doors hard enough, and the doors have stayed open. the car has failed to inform me. we only noticed because we can hear the wind as i am driving faster. also in testing the car, the door wasn't even on the hatch and the car still did not warn of the door being open and the car was in movement. while no accident or death has occurred yet, this a is problem that could result in someone's death.

after purchase of a new 2008 hhr on 22 september 2008, i drove the vehicle home and upon getting into it the next morning i backed out of my garage and notice a very soft brake pedal. i then started down the drive way and when attempting to stop at the street the vehicle's brakes would not comply with my brake pressure and the vehicle proceeded into the street. this became a routine situation upon "cold startup's" and when reported to the dealer,(john donoghue chevrolet, whiteville, nc) after several poor stops, my salesman advised "yeah we know about it as we've had the same problem on 2008 solstices". when confronted with a possible fix he advised that " a part on the turbo fixes the problem." i made arrangements to have the car serviced upon my return from vacation on or about 26 oct 08. i dropped the car off with the service writer/manager and no mention was made as to poten tial problems fixing the car. upon my return several hours later i was advised by the service manager that the problem is systemic to 2008 turbo engines and general motors doesn't want to recall the cars. the dealership service manager provided me with a service bulletin that gm put out as a potential "fix" but he refused to service the car. i took the vehicle to another chevrolet dealership and they readjusted the computer, per the bulletin; however, the vehicle still does not stop properly on cold startup. gm customer service personnel and the bulletin advised that "they are working on the issue."

just bought an 2008 hhr 18000 miles on it drove it home then went to go out and now the ignition key won't turn. key just goes in and out. the 800 service people no help just said jiggle keys and keep turning the steering wheel to get the key to turn... any answers out there??? think they need a recall after reading so many problems the hhr ignition switch has... some even say they can't get it to shutoff and they keys are stuck.

brakes lose vacuum when car sits for a while. on a cold start there is little braking power until the vacuum builds up. the dealership has been unable to correct the problem due to the fact gm does not have a fix for it. i have had the car 6 months with no fix. it's unsafe and i have a major concern due to having teenage drivers.

tl*the contact owns a 2008 chevrolet hhr. while driving approximately 45 mph, the contact struck a patch of black ice and the vehicle rolled over 3 or 4 times. she struck the side of her head on the side window and stated that her head became numb. she went to the hospital the same day and the doctor informed her that the injuries were minor; however, she needed to visit her physician. the other passenger also sustained minor injuries. the vehicle sustained major damage to the windows and the front end. the air bags failed to deploy. a police report was filed. the vehicle was towed to the shop. the dealer and manufacturer have not been notified. the current and failure mileages were 9,200.

i was driving a 2008 chevy hhr and was involved in a rollover accident. no airbags deployed and i understand there was a recall by gm of certain 2008 gm hhr models for issues with roof rail airbags. i am wondering why no airbags deployed in my rollover accident.

no crashes, 22000 miles on the car. heard this noise for about 2000 miles before i took it in. 1. front end suspension popping noise 2. they told me that intermediate steering shaft needed replaced. three weeks later, i will have to take it back again this week. the problem has come back.

popping, cracking, grinding sound and car vibrating upon applying brakes. very hard to get car to stop took it to the dealer they said something was loose under the car and they had to cut and piece it back together. sound stopped for about 2 weeks and is back worse than before have had the car for 10 months 8,400 miles on it. i am afraid to drive it because i don't want to hurt myself or anyone else i am actually looking at buying and older car to drive around in.

i have a 2008 chevy hhr. four months after receiving the vehicle, i noticed that the brakes were squealing excessively. additionally, it was pulling to the right when stopping. i took it into val-mark chevrolet, new braunfels, texas. i was told that they could really find anything wrong other than the front pads were wearing unevenly. they were replaced. in december of 08, i took my car to champion chevrolet, corpus christi, texas complaining of the same problem. they advised the back rotors were warped and needed to be resurfaced. that was done. i have just taken my car back in to val-mark. now the front rotors are warped and need to be resurfaced. mr. jim robinson of val-mark says that i will need to pay for the resurfacing. it is my contention that this is an ongoing problem and should be covered. additionally, i feel resurfacing in only putting a bandaid on the problem. the dealership has now changed positions and states that the front pad were not replaced for uneven ware, but only as a goodwill gesture.

twice in the first 30000 miles a pulsating feeling in the brake peddle had developed. the dealer said the front rotors were warped. the fix was to turn the rotors. the next time they will have to be replaced. this need for brake service every 15,000 miles is not right. the next time this happens the car will not be under warranty and will cause me to incur a considerable expense.

after a side collision my car rolled and landed on the passenger side of the vehicle. my 2008 hhr ls has no side airbags, however it has driver and passenger airbags and these did no deploy even though my car also has substantial frontal damage from the roll.

car was approx 4 months old and brakes started squeaking-took into dealer-they turned the rotors-fixed for about 2 wks - its back again and now when i apply brakes the front end of the car shakes violently. i am scared to drive this vehicle. i've tried to enter several times - it will not take it.

so far it has happened twice my wife leaving work the car stalled. first time her speed was aprox. 40 mph, 10 minutes into her drive. the next day we took the 2008 chevy hhr to the dealer in chino california on feb,26,2009 .they kept the car for a couple of days,and could not find a problem. second time her speed was aprox, 35 mph, 5 minutes into her drive. date june 30,2009. both times see was able to coast over to the side of the road. and both times the car started right away with no indication of trouble.

2008 hhr ss faulty brakes from cold start. excessive frontal brake dust. serviced at 2000 miles. serviced again at 17,000 miles needing new brakes.dealership says this is normal condition. my ss model has 2 different front seats which dealership says this is normal .speed control floats,slow to respond..originally froze at 70mph. i did receive a citation for speeding cuz of malfunctioned. l/f /f and r/f tire pressure readings are reversed according to the ip. very irate 30 year gm employee who paid cash for this mess.

my mother experienced shaking and pulling to the side when applying the brakes. i told her to take it to chevy for repairs. they put new rotors and brake pads on the car at my expense. i am a mechanic and it is not normal for the friction pad to be missing on the brakes, that is a part failure not wear and tear. i have the parts taken off my car in september when the repair occurred, that proves my statement. two months later this same problem is occurring again. i contacted chevy and they said it was normal wear and tear. i feel the new rotors are warped. also i have complained to chevy several times because when the car is first started the brakes are hard. if a small child walks out there could be a fatality due to this failure. i am in the military and live on post with many young children and the sidewalk goes by my house. i have seen several complaints online about the brakes being hard upon starting the vehicle made by other owners of the chevy hhr's.

2008 hhr-chevrolet. manual transmission. driving down the road and the top half of the gear shift knob came off and fell into the drivers side floor and under the brake pedal. i was just extremely lucky it was early in the morning and i was in the right hand lane where i could down shift to slow down and pull over to the side of the road to remove the top of the knob. when i called the dealer to bring it in he said there was somebody standing right in front of him with the same problem.

we own a 2008 hhr and it has been nothing but trouble . first when we purchased the car in dec 2008 it had 23,000 miles on it. two months after we got the car we had to replace both front rotors on it and after fighting with gm they agreed to pay for the rotors. at this time they told us that the car needed new tires and a front end alignment at 26,000 miles . then just two months ago at 61,000 miles it had a rumbling noise in the front end ,the drivetrain was still under warrenty.the dealer told me that the right side axle bearing was bad and they replaced it,and also at this time they told us that the lower ball joint needed to be replaced at a cost to us of over $400.00 . just last week the rumbling noise returned , i returned the car to the dealer again and they told us that this the left axle bearing was bad, warranty also covered this repair. also they said that the car needed the front rotors turned and new brake pads on it .my wife hit a pothole about three weeks ago and bent the wheel . cost to replace the wheel was $150.00 . when i rotated the tires as per gms advice i noticed that the right front strut was leaking ,and as well as the left rear shock absorber. the only thing i like about this car was its looks. so next week we are going to buy a ford focus.. its no wonder gm had to have the government bail them out...

i also own a 2008 chevy hhr lt that is loaded. i purchased this vehicle brand new and currently have 39,000 miles on it. i have had nothing but trouble with this vehicle. i have had all of the following problems and gm replaced some of them. gm installed a new intermediate steering column, drag links,turned rotors 4 times and right side upper ball joint. after the warranty expired, the brakes once again went to hell in a hand basket. i ordered a set of racing rotors and ceramic brakes, this cured the brake problem. at 37,000 miles, the check engine light came on and i had it checked out and it was the cam sensor. i replaced the sensor and reset the light and it did not fix the problem. i really like the vehicle, but gm needs to do their homework and do more research and development.

i took car into dealership because it's stalling in traffic repeatedly when i am trying to come to a stop and even once when just driving. i took it in and they said they didn't know what it was and diagnostics weren't reporting any problems. they released vehicle that next day and it stalled on me in lot. they stated they could not get the vehicle to stall yet it happened within five min of me picking it up. i then took it back they kept it for the weekend. released it back to me after i was told it had stalled once but they didn't know what it was. i contacted g.m customer service and then the dealership when i got the report stated it hesitated and when i asked why they put that down and not that it had stalled like the kathy had told me on 3 different occasions it had done, they refused to answer me. the car still stalls in traffic and they refuse to fix it. i will no longer take it here. i just want my car to be safe where i won't get hit doing uturns into traffic like i almost have been with my baby the day i picked up vehicle. i have to put it in park to start it over again. i can't do that on this busy hwy i live on with traffic coming at me as fast as it does in this city.

my 2008 hhr has 45000 miles and is a year and half old. the ignition locked up and i can place my key into the ignition but not turn on. i called road side assistance and since i have more miles than the warranty, i have to pay over $600 to get a problem fixed that seems to happen to a lot of people. i was a chevy guy, however i know now that since many are having this problem and have to pay for it themselves. i will never pay another chevy. poor quality and poor customer service.

brake rotors warped and the car would shake with such a severe force controlling the car was very hard. after the dealer replaced four sets, before the car had 50,000 miles on it, the dealer told me that the brake pads were worn out and that would cause this to happen again. just before the last rotors were, replaced the electric power steering would cease working and effectively hinder our ability to steer the car. the electric power steering is still a problem daily at different times. i am going to check into the repair process soon. i feel that this problem is caused by the rotors warping and shaking the front end equipment of the hhr. in closing, i replaced the pads and they were not worn out. i kept them for future reference.

i have a 2008 chevrolet hhr that has the identical power steering system as the cobalt that has been recalled, however gm has not recalled the hhr for some reason. i am now having the identical problems with my chevy hhr power steering as reported with the cobalt. in the past few days the power steering has failed 6 times, including once on a highway, traveling 55 miles an hour between semis. it was quite scary. i took the car in for an oil change and asked that they check the power steering fluid and it was there at the jiffy lube that i was informed that the car did not take power steering fluid and that there was a recall on some chevys for this problem. i have heard nothing about the hhr but i see from searching there are several other people like me posting blogs and comments about their problem.

brakes shudder in front when moderate application at highway speed 120kph - dealer fix is having rotors machined but every time they do that they get thinner and heat up quicker therefore warp quicker. this time they had to replace rotors and machined rear drum because i literally had to you use the parking brake to stop on the highway to get back home from our trip. i'm a licensed mechanic and have never seen such poor performance in brakes, my solution would be to install disc brakes on the rear axle to improve the performance in braking. this problem started at since car was purchased 2008 first occurrence was at 5k (km) new rotors were put in at 45k (km). please recall these brakes.

my 2008 hhr looses power steering while turning, then suddenly returns power causing to oversteer. this is a sever safety issue as it is a come and go type problem,i do not drive during inclement weather fearing body damage to persons and vehicles other than myself. i have taken to dealer only to be told we can not determine the problem as it is intermittent. also the tire pressure display is on even tho all tire pressure is correct, not sure if they are related to "electric" power steering. would like this as a record if any persons are injured or worse killed due to the possible short circuit in powersteering. how many people have to leave the vehicles at home after spending all their money on them for this to be a recall?

i have a 2008 chevy hhr, and have had to do quite a bit of research to find out what the real issue here is. there are a lot of complaints on other web sites about the intermediate steering shaft going out every few thousand miles. the problem is, that no dealership can seem to diagnose the "clunking" noise coming from the drivers side front wheel and steering column. however the few shops that have figured it out are having to re-replace the part constantly. gm has re-designed the part for other vehicles but not the hhr. mine has been replaced every 10,000 miles, 4 times now and it wears out after about 10k. gm should create a better one for the hhr and offer a recall since their part is defective.

i live in deltona, fl and drove to palm bay, fl from home and got out of my car, returned to it a few minutes later and started it with the key fob and got in and the key would not turn in the ignition. had to let the car turn itself off and tried several times to turn the key. the steering wheel was not locked, i walked to a nearby firestone dealer who kindly agreed to let a technician come over to my car and try to turn the key, he was unsuccessful as well after several attempts. he was able to pull the steering wheel into the locked position however was still unable to turn the key in the ignition. i had to call a tow truck to tow me to the nearest chevy dealership, in melbourne, fl. this dealership wouldn't even tell me if they had the part in stock to replace it so that i could drive home they told me to pay to be towed and let them look at it and see what the issue really was. i went online and saw that many other hhr owners have experienced this issue and they had suggestions on how to correct it, due to the fact that the tumbler was frozen. i walked to a gas station to by wad-40 and sprayed it in the ignition hole and unlocked my steering wheel adjustment to allow me to pull it up and down as quickly and as hard as i could to get the tumbler to free itself up, to no avail. 1.5 hours after the issue began the tow truck driver showed up and asked me what was wrong and i told him he could try and he was able to get the key to turn. i drove back home the 1.5 hours and my husband is ordering a replacement piece to install. why should we pay to replace this piece when this has been happening to so many owners of this vehicle make and model?

i own a 2008 chevy hhr lt. last year i had the rotors and brakes replaced because of the shaking in steering while coming to a stop this then helped with the problem then recently the shaking came back i couldn't believe that my brakes and rotors needed to be serviced again. then recently my power steering would go out while driving i checked online and noticed that alot of hhr owners are having the same problem. this is a big safety issue and i think gmc needs to be responsible and take care of this problem.

the electric power steering turned itself off mid turn causing a drastic understeering leading the vehicle into oncoming traffic, upon research i found that gm recalled the exact same steering components that failed in the hhr in other gm vehicles but not the hhr. if this does not warrant serious investigation what does. the second time this happened everything was fine as we were driving straight, the problem occurred when the electric power steering turned back on mid-turn causing my wife to over turn into someone's front lawn, had anyone been in the way this would have been tragic. we've been lucky this far but as we are a low income household we don't have the means to pay some dealer to fix this as they all say it's on us the owners to take care of even though it's the same defective equipment that was in vehicles like the cobalt and pontiacs lines, why hasn't there been a recall issued, this is a sever driving impairment that can cause accidents and gm doesn't seem to care due to it's an acceptable loss! no life is an acceptable loss, please address this issue as there are many complaints into this same issue in the research i preformed, by the way, why is it gm canada issued a recall on this part for the hhr and not the us branch? our hhr is a 2008 with 66000 miles on it and the electric power steering is the issue.

i began to notice that the power steering in my car would intermittenly fail about three or four months ago. the first instance was when i was turning my wheel while entering into a parking lot. the car made a dinging sound, then in the odometer are it read "pwer steering." it then became extremely difficuit to turn my wheel. i stopped the car, turned it off, then restarted it and the problem went away. then a few weeks later it happened again, but when i turned it off, started, then restarted, it went back to normal just as it did before. this continued on for several weeks, each time it would be less and less time between incidents. now, i can't even get ten feet out of my driveway before i lose the power steering function. it continues to function normally when the car is first started, and then for a short distance, but every time i drive the car now, i have no use of my power steering. *tt

i purchased a 2008 chevrolet hhr in 2009 with 40,000 miles on it. i noticed braking/shaking problem. dealer fixed it the day after i bought it. under 500 miles later, braking/shaking starts again. different dealer turns rotors two more times. pads are wearing evenly, so the dealer mechanic advised me to purchase after-market rotors as the oem do not appear to resist warping very well. when the dealer's mechanic recommends putting on a non-dealer part, there has got to be something wrong with the engineering of the car or the integrity of the metal in the rotors. there are many complaints on people turning and re-turning these rotors all over the web, ultimately leading them to replace with non-gm parts. *kb

the first time the power steering failed in my 2008 hhr, i was driving on the freeway with my wife and daughter out of nowhere there was a warning sound and then the dashboard warning lit up and i had lost all power steering. luckily, i was able to keep control of the vehicle as there was heavy traffic and i was in the middle of a rather treacherous highway curve with four lanes of traffic. i eventually made way off freeway, turned off vehicle and then started it again. this seemed to do the trick, for a short time. since this first power steering loss, the same thing has happened at least 7 or 8 times, at various speeds with total power steering loss. this is the only vehicle we have and since we cannot afford another vehicle i am forced to drive this safety hazard. i am worried about losing control and crashing possibly hurting my family and/or others. this has to be fixed, there are too many people driving the same make/model/year with the same problem. it is obviously not a fluke; i am not the only person having this issue.

after driving for more than 10-30 min, at any speed but usually at or above 50 mph, the power steering would malfunction intermittently, steering/handling became difficult. feels like it's over-correcting or is ice-skating around the lane when keeping the wheel straight. occasionally hhr will buck while driving on the highway, would slow down to 55-65mph and still experience rough bucking & poor handling. took to dealership to fix what i thought was an alignment issue, they said there were no other problems, but still experience them almost daily. also have had troubles removing the key from ignition after shifting the car into park.

opened car door. sat in seat. put key in ignition started car. turned ignition to off to stop motor.turned key to on (not starting motor) all electrical systems died. had no access to rear hatch to check battery (electric latch release). could not remove key from ignition in off position. from what i have been reading on line this is a common known issue that chevrolet is aware of and had already has a replacement part for. went back to the car on 03/27/2012 to remove personal items prior to a tow to dealership. tried starting the car. it started up ok. drove the car to the dealer and left it there over night for early bird service. called this morning, 03/28/2012 and was told by the service associate that the vehicle would not start ans the electrical system was dead when they went to move it. service department called me ay 3pm to let me know that my assessment of the bad ignition cylinder was correct and what the charges would be.

i was driving on a freeway overpass at about 15 mph when the instrument panel displayed the message, "power steering." the steering wheel all but locked up and it was nearly impossible to drive the car though i found a way to go on the freeway and exit at the first chance i had. i called my mechanic first who said he wanted to see the vehicle as soon as possible. i told him i have a aaa membership and he suggested i have the car towed to avoid further damage since he did not yet know what the problem was. i had the hhr towed to the mechanic and he told me after a thorough investigation that the power steering assist was not working correctly; was doing this intermittently at this point but did it at random today. given the fact this problem cannot be predicted and the resulting safety issues, i authorized the mechanic to make the repair once he received the part. i have looked online and see this steering problem presents itself in the 2008 hhr at approximately 38k miles which is how many miles i have on it; the problem came up as if like clockwork. i don't feel i should have to pay for this repair work since there are under 40k miles on the car. is there any plan for chevrolet to call a recall on this problem so we can either have the repairs done at gm's expense or for those of us that made the repairs on our own to have a reimbursement? my repairs are going to be $400+. i am unable to drive the car unless the repairs are made. please advise what my options are for this problem. thanks.

our hhr's lock/latch system stopped working completely on 4/18/2012. we started having problems in march 2012 and had our mechanic look at it, but he couldn't get the problem to duplicate, so he cleaned the key lock and lubed it. the car is permanently locked. we don't have a key lacentry on this vehicle, it is a manual lock. we now have to incur a lock smith and/or towing bill + a repair bill for the mechanic to fix what he believes is a failure/breakdown of the latch system. we have an extended warranty, but we're not sure if the warranty covers this part; even if they do we still have a $100 deductible. *js

electric power steering goes out at random times. is not related to speed, or even being used at the time. can be at a full stop and the power steering will stop working and the power steering message comes on the dash. turning off car and restarting will get it working again, but may go right back out within minutes, apparently for no obvious reason. happened to me 3 times in a one mile trip. and this is a repeated occurrence. vehicle is very hard to steer when the power steering stops working. doing online research has show that many other owners are having the same issue and that replacement of the power steering motor usually fixes the problem. same as with the below mentioned problems with the chevrolet cobalt. recall. number 10023. there is currently a recall on this exact same problem with the exact same part on the chevrolet cobalt. i believe the hhr should have been added to this recall. this can potentially be a very deadly problem depending on circumstances. how me deaths or injuries does it take for chevrolet to do the right thing for all affected owners of faulty components?

i bought this car in june of 2008. it has been in the shop 17 times with electrical problems the brakes have quite working came to a stop sign and they went to the floor the car has shut off several times going down the road and when it rains really hard the car will not start it drains my brand new battery i got the car from bob steel chevrolet in cocca fl they kept telling me there was nothing they could do i called a lawyer and gm motors decided to give me 10% of the car and they never fixed the car this it the 4th battery because it is draining them so much there no good gm motors told me they were going to label the car as a lemon but because i bought it used they weren't going to buy it back they also told me that the 2007 had the same problem but because this was a 2008 and no other problems with this model to just deal with it i don't know what lest to do please help.

the power steering went out while i was driving on city roads. it will briefly come back on after the car is shut off and restarted, but it goes out again shortly after the vehicle begins moving. my warranty is up and the manufacturer has refused to reimburse me, either fully or partially, for the cost of replacement. there was a canadian recall for the same model of car, but i cannot find any information on the difference between the power steering units of the us and canadian models such that not having a us recall would be justified. please investigate this issue. it is not only unfair for people to have to pay for expensive repairs for a relatively new vehicle, it is a serious safety risk that should be fixed by the manufacturer.

while driving, the power steering light came on and the vehicle became hard to steer. it does this almost every time we drive the vehicle, but luckily it has not yet done it while turning a corner. when you turn the vehicle off and turn it back on, it works again. there does not seem to be anything in particular that triggers an event. it may happen after 2 minutes of driving, or 40 minutes of driving, or it may not happen at all on any one particular trip. this is a very dangerous situation and seems to be common amongst hhr owners. there is currently a canadian recall on this, but not here in the us. there is a gm tsb (231703) referencing this, but that does not require gm to repair this dangerous problem.

this car is a safety hazard going down road. i bought it new in 2008. rotors & brakes are horrible - have to have repaired multiple times. bearings have went out, replaced & one went out again. i spend approx 1200 dollars a year just to get shaking out of front end, turning rotors & tires. but that isn't really the problem i am reporting: was having trouble with ignition switch - it was recalled - took it to dealer to have it replaced - understand that i was having no problems with car at this time - upon leaving dealers and within 15 miles power steering light comes on & i lose power steering. now my power steering goes out unexpectedly whenever it decides to. took back to dealer because i felt this was something they messed up and was told this is just a problem with hhrs and that power steering motor needs to be replaced. after researching this...it is very common with this car, along with brake issues, severe shaking in front, bearings going out and many other problems that i have also had. i realize my car is high mileage, i work as a home health nurse & use this car for work, but i do keep it maintained. i hope that i will be able to get into different car before i get in accident in this one.

i had just pulled out of a driveway. i heard a few alert tones and looked at my dash and the power steering message was displayed. i entered into a roundabout and learned that my power steering was not working. luckily i was not going very fast and was able to muscle the car through the turns. i had a few more turns on the way home. once at home i turned the car off for a few minutes. upon restarting it the power steering was again functional. i am afraid that it will happen again in heavy traffic areas.

while on vacation we were driving in washington dc traffic during mid day traffic congestion, the power steering failed in our car. we were lucky and were able to struggle to steer to get off to the edge of the highway and shut the car off. upon restarting the power steering was working until several hours later again in busy traffic. this happened 3 more times in next two days before getting it back home & to the dealership, where it was determined to be a component that has been recalled in other models but not this one. i cannot understate the danger of losing power steering in any road conditions, putting myself, my family and other motorists in danger.

the car was like "exhaling" as i was driving on the highway. the next morning after i started my car, i saw the message "power steering". took it to the chevy dealership on oct 3 and was charged for them to tell me they could not duplicate the problem. on oct 10, it happened again, but i heard a warning signal along with the message. i immediately drove to the dealership again and was told they couldn't get to me until oct 15. i was told that the last time, they found a low voltage and that was all. i'm left wondering what to do if it stops in the middle of the highway and no power steering. i have another appointment on oct 15th(probably for another $120) for them to tell me the same thing. safety - if i lose the power steering while on the highway, trying to go around curves, i will surely get hit by someone. there's no shoulders on the highway (i-40) that i drive on daily during peak traffic time. luckily, my car has not done that to me, but it is showing all the warnings. please help before someone loses their life, including myself. i am about afraid to get on the road because of this problem and of reports that the engine "fried" on someone else's car.

as i was driving around a curve after stopping, going about 5 mph, a power steering message appeared and i was unable to steer my car. in order to stop my car i had to turn a corner (by turning the wheel which took a lot of effort), where i was able to put it in park and then shut off the vehicle. the car started back up with no problems. an hour later the message reappeared and would not go off. it is very difficult to steer and i do not want to drive this on the road (i have no control over the car). the car only has 31,000 miles on it and is 4 years old.

power steering keeps going out. usually when turning. the first time it went out, i was driving 45 mph and it went out while i was rounding a curve, and i almost hit a tree because i was unaware that it was going to do this. after that, it went out about 2-3 times a week, everytime when making a turn. i went to have it looked at and my mechanic said that he couldn't find anything wrong with the power steering and to report this problem as he has seen this in a few other hhrs that he has worked on. it is very dangerous and because of it unpredictability, i am always afraid to drive my car.

the warning indicator for the power steering on my 2008 chevrolet hhr went on as i was leaving a parking lot. because i was not far from home, i drove home very slowly without power steering. when i turned the vehicle on again, it was fine. since then, the power steering has gone out while i am driving, and i have to pull off the road and restart my vehicle to get it to operate again. on my last trip, which was approximately 40 minutes with very few turns (highway driving), the power steering went out four times. i have been told that gm recalled the power steering motor on the chevy cobalt and saturn ion, which is the exact same part as the hhr. this issue is unsafe, and the consequences could be dangerous if the power steering goes out when someone is not expecting it or traveling at high speeds (or if they are too young to remember cars without power steering).

while driving on the road to work, the display message center said power steering then there was no power steering. it happened twice that day but after the car was shut off and cooled down it did not come on. the day after it happened again but stayed on longer. when the car was brought into the dealership on 12/31/12 they told us it could be the power steering motor or the steering column witch they both were not under warranty . it keep happening with the car for a week. i then brought my car to my mechanic on 1/4/13 and he replaced the power steering motor and it has not happen sense. before i brought my car to him i went online to see if there was anyone else with the same problem and what they did it fix it. that's how i found out it wasn't just my car that this has happen to that there was a lot of other people who have had the same problem. thankfully we were able to control the car and not get into an accident.

while driving, the power steering goes out. i bought this car for my son. my child. i am upset because now this has happened, i researched online and i see the hhr had a recall for steering issues but for some reason, the 2008 is not included. now i have to pay an astronomical amount of money to fix this car as it is no longer under warranty. the power steering goes out while driving. it will then return and at any moment, it goes out again. not happy.unsafe. why is the 2008 not included in the recall? what if my child is driving, the steering goes out and he ends up having no control? the vehicle estimated speed is only the first time it happened on the expressway. it has went out at all speeds. we took it to a shop and they couldn't find anything wrong, we left and it started happening again. now it's costing even more money to take it back, get to the bottom of it, and repair it.

there was not a single incident that i could document the mileage and mph.the problem was most noticeable and frightening when going down an extended stretch of relatively steep grade in the mountains at a speed of 45 - 50 mph. the problem is vibration with the brakes. the car began shaking when applying the brakes in the summer 2011. we had the rotors (i think this is the part) turned sometime shortly before sept 25, 2011 and the problem returned at a low level very soon after and gradually increased. we had the same procedure done in august 2012 at a mileage of 52,000. the problem returned in february 2013 when the mileage was probably around 60,000.

power steering cut out while driving approximately 5 mph while approaching intersection. after stopping at the intersection, i turned the engine off and restarted the engine then the power steering returned. the power steering continued to cut out repeatedly at intervals of 3 to 5 minutes, and returned after restarting. inquiry of hhr forums revealed that problem is the overheating of a faulty electric power steering motor (part numbers old: 20995579 and new: 19257875). these are the same part numbers for the power steering motors used in other gm models (cobalt & g5) which have been recalled by gm as a result of the nhtsa investigations. one has to wonder why recalls weren't issued for all vehicle models using the same defective parts.

as i was rolling up to a stop sign, the "power steering" alert appeared on my instrument panel. having never experienced this warning before, i didn't know quite what it meant. as i made my left turn into the intersection, i found out! it took all my physical strength to stay within the pavement. had my wife been driving, she would not have been able to maintain control. the steering failed twice more in the next two days. fortunately, i avoided collisions both times and had repairs made at the dealership as soon as it opened for business after the 4th of july holiday. as there is no recall for this major safety hazard, the cost to me was $302.66. i understand that this power steering motor is used on other gm cars that have been recalled. the hhr should be included!

i purchased my 2008 chevy hhr from a dealership in ky in february 2013, with around 55k miles on it. due to the amount of miles i also purchased an extended gm power train warranty. toward the end of may, i was driving on the hi-way coming off an exit, going between 45-55 miles an hour veering to the right, when the power steering in my car went out. the mileage screen flashed power steering and i could hardly steer my car to get off the exit onto another hi-way. i drove my car home and parked it in the driveway. the next morning i got up and started my car, drove it and it was ok. however, the next day the power steering went out again and has every day since then. in the beginning i would turn my car off, wait 1 to 2 minutes, start my car and it would be fine. starting last month, the power steering goes off every 2 to 5 minutes regardless if i re-start my car or not.... it does not matter if i am trying to make a turn, or driving down a straight road. i can have the ac on, the ac off and the power steering goes out within 2 minutes of me starting my car. i was told in order for my gm power train warranty to be covered, i had to my car to a chevy service station, which i did on 6/27/2013 and was told that the power train warranty did not cover the power steering electric motor. since the incident i have been researching this issue, and have read that is a very common occurrence for the hhr's, but gm has done nothing about it. i have also emailed and spoken with a chevy complaint person and was also told nothing would be done about it. seems to me this is a safety issue, of the same kind the chevy cobalts were recalled for... why is nothing being done for the chevy hhr's with the same issue?

i could be sitting in line at a drive thru, turning slowly, or driving straight and i hear a click, and the "power steering" message displays, and then it becomes extremely difficult to steer. if i shut the car off it goes away. also a major point is that it seems to be weather sensitive. last winter it came on only two times and never happened again until about a few days ago when the weather got above 90 degrees here. on those days it is very hard to get rid of it. however,, ironically, on a day that was only 74 degrees it never came on! i am afraid that this will come on while driving down the interstate and i am put into a situation of having to maneuver quickly.. and i am sure that all the other people that have complained about this will agree that moving "quickly" isn't going to happen. dealer tells me that the steering "module" is the entire steering column.. so repair cost is $900. i have 162,000 highway miles on my car and yes,, it's just an 08. if this part stayed in a faulty mode all the time i would say that it was a maintenance repair that i am liable for,, but with it going on and off and putting my safety at risk.. i feel this should be a manufacturer recall! they are the ones that decided to make this into an electronic component.. and a faulty one at that! do a search on line about "power steering" see how many other hhr owners are having the exact same safety issue with way less miles on their cars. i was shocked and disgusted. i am not feeling the confidence to make chevy my next purchase. why do the chevy cobalts have this recall.. but not hhr owners?

i was on vacation driving 25 mph when the car started chiming and the power steering went out. i was close the my motel so i drove there. i turned the car off let it sit a few minutes then started it again and the steering was back. i took it the dealer when i got back home and the dealership said they drove it and it never went out. it didn't happen again until 2 weeks ago. now it happens every couple of minutes. i have to stop turn the car off then back on. it's fine for a few minutes then car chime and power steering is gone. i have done a search and have found a lot of people having the same problem. the same components were used on chevy cobalt and they were recalled.

as leaving work and driving out of the parking lot my car stiffened up on the slight curve, but as i drove and started to accelerate the "power steering" alert turned on. i went to make my first right turn and the car was extremely hard to turn. i pulled over, to look up the nearest autozone and thank goodness there was one right down the street from where i was at. i headed there and the lady hooked it up to the machine to see if the car was spitting out a code - nope. we looked in the manual and seen that the alert meant the car needed to be serviced immediately. with so many complaints i'm wondering why this issue hasn't prompted a recall. what does it take - death related to power steering? you hear about precaution recalls to avoid issues, but when you have an issue there is no justice. no wonder these vehicles were discontinued. shame on chevy/gm - this is no isolated incident.

i was driving home from a long trip, about 100 miles from home and my power steering light came on and my steering became very hard to turn. if there was an accident in the road i would have had a hard time avoiding it. i went to the gas station and when i turned the car off and then back on the power steering seemed to fix itself. well i took off down the road again and the power steering light came back on again with same scenario mentioned above. now my power steering light comes on sometimes twice a day everyday. i took it to the dealer finally today. the dealer called me and said, "good news this part is covered." i said great! then he called back 30 minutes later with bad news, he said that the part was covered in canada only! what, not in florida! this does not even make sense. lets just say after that phone call he charged me for the electric power steering motor at cost. my total cost was $163.45 (part #19257875). if i could have done it myself i would have. i just saw this part on ebay for $82.85 or better yet, if it was a recall it could have been free. after his earlier phone call there was no way i was going to let him charge me anything more. but, why again is this part not on the recall list for chevy hhrs. this is very dangerous. i guess when something bad happens and somebody gets sued maybe there will be a recall. sad but true. please recall! thanks.

while exiting the interstate yesterday, a "power steering" warning appeared on the dash. i had to make a turn immediately after this happened and was nearly unable to turn my car. i pulled off at the nearest parking lot to find that this vehicle does not have power steering fluid and is all electric. i had someone disconnect the battery to "reset" my car and had steering back. based on the complaints i have thourougly read over, i know that it is only a matter of time before it goes out again. i can't understand why this issue continues to be ignored and not recalled due to the fact the cobalt and ion have both been recalled for the same issue and the hhr has the same power steering parts as the cobalt. when somone loses their life because of a power steering problem will someone listen and act on it then???!!! i have two children and i'm afraid to drive them anywhere now. this is my only means of transportation and don't have the extra $800 or more sitting around to repair a problem that is chevrolet's fault. *tt

while driving at speeds upwards of 45 mph, the power steering light came on and i lost power steering. i almost got into a crash and was unable to safely steer the vehicle. once the vehicle was turned off the steering was returned. and then it would go out again until the vehicle was turned off again. upon searching the internet i saw that 1.3 million vehicles were recalled for the exact same issue but the chevy hhr was not one of them. it seems to be a hazardous issue according to chevy's recall, and the have received multiple complaints from hhr owners and haven't recalled this part on the hhr.

was driving down the road and power steering went out. after i stopped the car, turned it off and back on, power steering resumed, although only for a few minutes. i had to keep turning the car off and on in order for the power steering to re-engage. after a few months of this, the power steering is now completely not working! it comes on for about 1 minute when i start the car and then turns off completely after that minute. i am afraid to drive my car this coming winter in the snow. i do not want to shell out a bunch of $$$ and then have them recall the car. i know other chevy models with the same problem have been recalled. why has the hhr not been included in these recalls? no power steering poses a great risk of getting in an accident. i am a very frustrated chevy owner! please recall this car!

i purchased this car in december of 2010, as a certified used car. it had 13435 miles at the time of purchase. after six months, 17000 miles, service lights began to light up---i took it to the dealer. after taking it home all seemed to be operating normally when in august, 17100 miles, i began to experience a shuttering when braking and a clunking noise while driving. dealer repaired, harness and hub bearing and i purchase two new front tires. within about a year car began to shimmy again when braking. at 25000 mile , dealer stated now brakes are bad, warped and rotors need work. within 6 months of taking car home, shimmying began to start again. i have seen many complaints on line with regard to the brakes, but gm denies any knowledge of problems. hmmmmmmmm!

power steering stops working. it began about a month ago, scared me a lot. at first it would happen after i drove it a bit but now it happens after about 30 seconds. i worry about needing to steer to avoid someone at slow speeds. i live in a crowded community and people, dogs, bikes, skateboarders and children are always just walking out onto the road. also, i drive into farmer's markets and swap meets where people are all milling about and lots of maneuvering needs to be done to avoid accidents. no power steering makes this very hard to do. i can't afford to fix as i m barely making enough money to continue with my small business. called chevrolet and they tell me this is not a recall issue. they will charge me $125 just to look at it. and i have to give up using the car. this is crazy that no recall has been done considering all the complaints and facts of this issue.

i was stopped at an intersection making a right hand turn when the power steering stopped working with out notice thankfully i was not moving and did not have far to go (40ft) to pull into the buisness parking lot it was struggle for me to get the car in there. this is a saftey issue that needs to be corrected before someone or a family is killed . anyone with weak muscles or artifical limbs who is traveling on a road or the highway may not be as lucky as i was and could suffer very serious injury or death . i contacted my local chevrolet dealer kevin (service writer) and also spoke with harold (10yrs with chevrolet in detroit) who said my vin# does not fall under any type of recall or assitance to correct this problem. how many people will be injured or killed before chevrolet decides to correct this issue ????

i was driving my 2008 chevrolet hhr and exiting off of i95 in jacksonville fl when all of a sunned my power steering (electric steering) whet out, as it quir operating there was a warning light that came on in my instrument panel that read "power steering", i pulled over and shut the vehicle off and consulted my owners manual and could find nothing there to help with what may be the cause. i started the vehicle back up and was going to try and just get it to my house which was only 5-6 miles away and when i started the vehicle back up the power steering was operating normal again so i thought maybe a fluke, as i continued to drive home all seemed fine until i was making a turn and it went out again in the middle of my turn nearly causing me to run in to another vehicle. i pulled over again and waited for traffic to clear and started it up again and the steering was again operating normal. the chevrolet cobalt has the same electric steering motor as the hhr and had a recall as i understand according to the internet but there has not been one issued for the hhr yet although it is doing the same thing as the cobalt did. the steering on this vehicle is dangerous at best as you have no idea as to when you will loose power steering and run the risk of running in to some one.

i purchased my hhr 2008 new and only have 34400+ mileage as to this date, not hard on braking and 2013 the brakes were warped and i have it repaired. i experienced the problem with the ignition once, cannot turn off but after trying it eventually turned off after several try. this happened only once so i did no��t take it to the dealer. then my power steering went out while i was driving 40mph, i stopped the car and called the dealer and advice me to bring it in . the steering assist motor was replaced in 9/1/11. then nov. 19,2012 the rear side door will not close. my daughter have to drive while i was holding the door close, dealer replaced the internal lock door. now i a��m having problem with the engine light warning on with the temperature gauge working sometimes. i took it to the dealer and they said that is was not on. so nothing was done . as i said it work sometimes and most of the time it was� not working. i will take it back to the dealer and hopefully it will stay on so they can check what's wrong with it.

i was leaving work in louisville il and my power steering went out while turning a corner. luckily the corner wasn't a sharp one. i would have, in fact, hit oncoming traffic if there were any. i would have also hit anyone sitting at the stop sign in their driver door. i was very lucky. i had to get mine fixed in may of last year. i called gm complaining but they wouldn't fix it. i noticed there is a recall for this exact thing for 2009 and 2010's but nothing for 2008's. i wanted you to be aware that 2008's have this same flaw with the electric power steering motor. it kept going in and out until i got it fixed. after the first time i wasn't so surprised and knew to expect it at anytime. the first time was scary though. i can't imagine if it happened to a young driver. i'm 42 and drive well.

since we got the hhr 3 years ago we have had to replace the rotors 5 different times because they become warped. the new ones only last a month, maybe a 1,000 miles of wear before the brakes start to become warped again. two months ago before i could get it into the shop to replace the rotors i stepped on the brake doing about 5 mph when i heard a grinding noise. i immediately took it the shop, 50 miles away, to find out that a brake pad was completely missing!!! apparently the warped rotor uneven surface jerked the brake pad out of its setting and that is why it was missing. the mechanic had to do a complete brake (front) job using the best rotors on the market 2 months ago and in less than 1 month, with no heavy braking, the brakes are once again showing signs that the rotors are warped---stepping on the brakes it is jerking once again, and now they are almost as bad as they were when i took them in to get repaired. it is a very dangerous situation especially realizing the possibility of another brake pad coming off when i step on the brake. i have read online so many other people complaining of this same problem with these cars. i strongly feel that there needs to be a recall on these cars before something horrible happens to the occupants riding in these cars.

while driving, multiple times, i would hear a chime, the power steering lights up on dash, then loss of power steering would result. this problem started happening approximately 1 1/2 years ago. this problem is getting more frequent and is extremely dangerous. i took the car to pine belt approximately 1 1/2 weeks ago and was told i needed a power steering pump. i was told if that did not work that i would need a column replacement. this is a $1400 repair that i cannot afford. this is my only vehicle & i use it for both business and personal uses. as an example of how dangerous this situation is, i went on an hour & a half drive yesterday (4/22/14) and the power steering went out 18 times. at one point, i lost control of the car while trying to make a turn and almost ran into a curb. this is an extremely dangerous situation for both myself & to other drivers on the road.

kept hearing a clunking noise in the front end when going over speed bumps or hitting regular bumps in the road. have taken it to chevy mechanics several times, and no issue was found. took it in to an independent mechanic for a tune up and he told me that the front bushings were completely shot and it was having an adverse effect on my alignment. mechanic stated that for the bushings to be in the condition they were in, this had to have been an ongoing problem. chevy never diagnosed the problem and never made any suggestions for repairs of this nature. very upset that i am now out of warranty (my vehicle was under warranty when i first started hearing the noise) and i am now looking at a $1200 repair that chevy should have diagnosed and repaired 4 years ago when i first noticed the problem. this on top of all of the recalls and other issues gm seems to be having, i will never purchase another gm vehicle.

the left rear power door lock actuator is inoperative. the rear door can not be opened ( from outside or inside) either with power assist or manually pulling the lock plunger. i have to use pliers grabbing the door lock plungers ( pulling upward) to force the lock open allowing me to open rear door (excessive force required along with someone pushing the power door lock switch simultaneously). once in the locked condition you can not operate the door from either the inside or outside. rear seat occupants would be trapped in back seat without being able to exit the vehicle. i checked the child safety switch and it is not engaged. this is a safety hazard as rear seat occupants would not be able to exit the car in the event of an accident or fire. the right side rear door lock actuator failed similarly ( same condition) on this same vehicle while under warranty and it was replaced. now gm dealer said it was my issue and gm would not cover replacement or cost to install replacement part. i want this saftey issue documented in an independent third party file in case of an accident.

the car hit a bump on the street and power steering alarm went off indicating a loss of that function. when pulled over to the side of the road,and ignition was turned off and back on, the problem resolved. from there on out, this problem would occur at irregular times whether the car hit a bump or not and the same remedy was used: pull over, turn switch off, turn switch back on and proceed. within a distance of 32 miles, this averaged about 6 times. today the dealership called and reported the car was fixed, but when my wife asked about the power steering problem, we were told "if it happens again, just bring it back", which doesn't sound as if that part of the ignition switch was fixed. we did not want to sign off on our car until the entire problem was taken care of. thank you for any help in this matter.

the first incident occured as i was slowing to make a turn and a message appeared on the message center that said power steering. over the course of the next 2 - 3 days i lost power steering in the car approximately 35 - 40 times. we then took the car to a chevy dealer to have the ignition switch work done. they had the car for 1 1/2 months. i didn't have any issues until about 2 weeks after i picked the car up and have continued to have problems with losing power steering as i'm driving down the road. from what i understand, my car seems to be doing the same thing that the 2009 & 2010 hhr's that are being recalled are doing.

around april my car started to have a hard time accelerating. a warning cane on the dash that read "loosing enginepower" or words to that effect. when i would brake my car would shake. when i would drive at about 35 my car steering wheel would start b to shake and was hard to control. i took it to my local chevy dealership where i had the oil change, all four breaks replaced, the tech took a ride with me to hear and feel what my car had been doing. he said he didn't know what it was but ran a diagnostic on it and it said multiple things maybe wrong with, such as the fuel injector, the turbo had came up and a fuel regulator and the electrical system. i asked if it was safe to drive and they insured me it was. my car continued to make all these sounds and struggled to accelerate and the breaks were still slipping. on april 17th i was driving on my son's field trip and suddenly my car started to lose power. i pulled over to side of the interstate at the truck stop. i turned my car off and oil was every where. i had my car towed to the local dealership where i purchased the car. they said the timing chain had broke, causing major damage to my engine. i will have to replace my engine. had my car been properly diagnosed, this could have been prevented. i am now out i found a vehicle due to this misduagnoses. i have had this car for almost 2 years.

2008 chevrolet hhr. consumer writes in regards to ignition switch recall notice. *smd the consumer stated prior to the recall, he was having trouble starting the vehicle, and the key would not go all the way in the ignition. the consumer it has been two months, since he received the recall notice, and nothing has been done.

as exiting the expressway lost the steering power it was very hard to turn since i wasnt expecting it i ended at the shoulder and a flat tire.the car behind me realized i had car problems and was able to react to avoid a car accident. i heard of a recall and contacted gm at 1-800-222-1020. i was told they were aware of this situation but only doing a recall of 2009 and foward not 2008. i am also waiting for th edealership to contact me regarding the recall for the ignition.

started vehicle and was exiting parking lot at approximately 10 mph. heard a click, power steering was not available and the dic showed "power steering". drove the car for a short distance to see if it would correct. shut off the vehicle and started back after a few minutes. power steering was working normally. drove a few hundred feet, heard a click again, power steering went out again and dic again displayed "power steering". went to internet to see if there was any information on this problem and found it was a recall on the 2009-2011 model hhrs. one area specified there were some 2008s that were involved in the recall as well. contacted my dealer on 05/27/2014 to bring in the car and asked about the recall, unfortunately my vehicle was not one of those being recalled. the repair cost was $280 to replace the eps motor. it appears there are more 2008 model cars with this same problem as well. i, too, am wondering why these models are not included in the recall.

my power steering went out on my 2008 hhr while i was making a left hand turn, i had to jerk the steering wheel back to avoid going into the oncoming traffic. i have had this problem ever since with the steering going out and having to wrestle with it. i took the vehicle to the chevrolet dealer ship to complain in cape coral, fl. and they told me it would cost me to fix the problem. i find that this is a severe safety issue and a general motors co. defect that i should not beheld responsible for to pay. please check into this problem and see if there is anymore complaints on this steering problem.

i was approaching a business driveway that required me to make a left hand turn, so i braked (at which time there occurred a heavy side-to-side shimmy of the steering wheel, a "clunk" or "pop" from the area of the engine compartment or front suspension, and a chime from the dash) and began the turn into a driveway across lanes of oncoming traffic. the steering became extremely difficult midway through the turn, which caused me to drive partially through a ditch rather than completing my turn safely and entering the driveway fully on the pavement. i then had to park, turn the key to the "off" position and restart in order to reactivate the power steering. we have been experiencing this randomly for several months and have even acquired some minor body and cosmetic damage due to having lost power steering in a curve. when i contacted the dealership, they told me it might be from a faulty ignition switch that is now on order and may take quite awhile to become available. today, i ran an internet search and found hundreds of mentions of this same problem within my year model, including a number of recalls that seem to affect the electrical power steering of this model and others. however, when i again called the dealership to inquire, they informed me that my vin is not included in any of the steering recalls, and that i would have to pay them or someone else to make the repairs and attempt to get reimbursed if it ever does become included. the advisor also instructed me to call 1-800-101-0220 to complain, which only gets me a recording stating that the call cannot be completed, which sounds as if it has been disconnected. this is a serious safety issue not only for the drivers and passengers of these cars, but also for other drivers and possibly pedestrians who might find themselves in harm's way when this completely random event occurs.

as i was driving down the road, my chevy hhr suddenly lost its power steering. there was a message on the dashboard that read, "power steering," but otherwise there was no warning. i managed to get home without an incident, but this is a potentially dangerous problem. the power steering was fully functional when i tested it later that same day. i read in the usa today that gm had issued a recall for power steering failure in several of its vehicles including the hhr, but my local chevrolet dealership told me that my vehicle was not under recall and that i would have to pay for any repair work. it is too dangerous to drive without getting it fixed, but i think that gm needs to stand by its product.

the power steering motor go out when i was driving from el cajon ca to el centro ca, just on the dangerous road miles and could have ended in a fatal accident mine has just started to go out on my 2008 hhr at 90,000 miles. right now, the light comes on and i can pull over and restart it and it's fine, but how long will that last? i googled it after it first happened, and that's when i saw that apparently gm knows this is a faulty part but swears it's only an issue on the other cars that have it not the hhr, yet there are hundreds of hhr owners who have posted about their power steering going out and it was recalled in canada. i know at 90,000 miles things might be going wrong whith the parts like a power steering motor, but i am incensed that i'm expected to pay for a part that gm knows is crap. if the part is bad, they should fix it in any vehicle that has an issue, not just the cobalts and pontiacs.

ever since i have had this car that i bought new, there have been electrical problems. the dashboard lights just go off while driving down the road. when the dash lights blink back on , the lighting brightness switch does not work, the roller to make it brighter does not dim the dash lights, until they all just go off again.? the tire sensors all go off and there is no readings for tire pressure. you check the tire pressure manually and they are all ok. the door locks don't work properly. if you use the key fob, the doors will lock and then you can't get them open again with the key fob and you are stuck. the key in the door won't even open the door, it is locked up tight. i have taken it into the dealer under warranty 3 times and they can find nothing wrong. i just don't lock my car anymore.

this is my 3rd complaint. i am still having trouble with my power steering i have now pulled a chest muscle because of the issues i am having with my power steering. is anyone going to do something about this? it's so unfair that we are having the same problems but we are expected to have to pay for faulty parts in our cars. this is dangerous and something needs to be done sooner than later about it. once again i'm on here quite a bit so if anyone knows anything please let me know. . thanks

i was driving and the car died and i lost my power steering and hit the ditch and apparently hit something in the ditch and busted my oil pan. now i cannot tell if my motor locked up or what. it will not start. this is not the first time my car has died while driving.

SUSPENSION

for the past couple months the power steering has locked up while driving if i shut my car off and turn it back on it will go back to normal, but never know when it will kick out again, the electric is cutting in and out, the lock on drivers side wont work when using key which happens periodically especially when it rains, my automatic start stopped working including my key-less entry will not unlock my doors or lock my doors even though i have changed the battery. i work for the youth service bureau/children's bureau of state of indiana as a case manager so often i have to transport clients to destinations, doctors, food pantry etc. i cannot take the chance of being in a wreck with clients, which has all most happened when i took a curve while by myself luckily. when i contacted the chevy dealer about recalls he stated there was only an ignition switch recall, which i beg to differ i have been on numerous websites where many other hhr owners are complaining about the same thing i am complaining about, i asked the chevy dealers maintenance guy if i could get a rental while waiting for it to be fixed because of my job, he stated that he had to order the part and then he would call me when it arrived for me to bring my car in and it would take only an hour to two hours to fix, so while we are still waiting now for two weeks i am putting my clients and their children in jeopardy over an issue i am not at fault for, i personally feel that chevy should cover the cost of a rental car until all issue are taken care of properly. this was my first time owning a chevy, and after what the maintenance man said about not letting me have a rental even though i work for county and state organizations i was very disappointed in chevy i am in the process of looking for a new car and not sure if i will purchase another chevy after this!

power steering goes out intermittently. there is a notification on the dash that just states "power steering" and there is no power steering. if the car is turned off and back on again, power steering will return but will eventually go out again. there is no pattern as to when or where it will go out and it goes out with out any warning other than the dash indicator mentioned above once it has gone out. it appears a replacement motor should be covered under gm bulletin number 14119, however the dealership is claiming i am responsible for the replacement which costs over $300. the dealership has stated they have talked to gm and they are not covering it. i have requested names and numbers of the people the dealership has spoken to at gm.
