chevrolet cobalt ss 2009 Complaints

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC

on my 09 chevy cobalt ss the rear brakes got very loud. the failure was the inner rear brake pads went metal to metal by 8000 miles from new. the outer pads were like new. dealership resurfaced the rotors and replaced the pads. they had the car 5 days and gave me a rental. 2000 miles later and the brakes are getting loud again.

my original complaint is 10263782. i now have to have the rear brake pads replaced again. went from new to 3/32 in less than 4000 miles. in less than 12,000 miles the rear inner pads have been replaced twice and the rotors resurfaced once.

my 2009 cobalt ss has 10,800 miles and at 7k miles, the rear brakes began to squeak. you can feel that the rotors in the rear are grooved terribly, and the inside of the rear pads are even worse. the car is at the dealer now getting this fixed after i had already taken it to another dealership and they wrote it off as "wear and tear". rear rotors do not get worn out in 10k miles.

i bought a used cobalt ss from a dealer in memphis on july 15, and drove it home to kansas, about 900 miles. it had about 3300 miles on it, and had been in gm fleet service. it now has 4600 miles. the rear brake rotors are scored badly on both sides, and my local dealer will not do anything for me, calling it "wear". in my opinion, this is an unacceptable wear rate on brakes, which is a safety concern. i have been in touch with a number of other cobalt ss owners with similar problems.

my rear brakes on my 2009 cobalt ss with just over 17000 miles on it were completely gone when i took the car to the dealership on tuesday july 28th of 2009. i first noticed some unusual noise coming from the rear of the vehicle at around 15000 miles. at first the noise was sporadic and i was not concerned with it but it soon developed into a constant friction type noise that could not be ignored. after leaving the vehicle with the dealership all day they found the cause of the problem. my rear brakes were metal to metal with the rotors. the service employee asked me if i e-brake slide the car, since i was not exactly familiar with the term he had to clarify its meaning. i told him i am not an e-brake sliding kind of guy and asked him to check the ware on the tires if he did not believe me because it sounds like performing a maneuver like that would cause the tires to have bald spots. we the service people could not find any bald spots they ruled the brake as a defect and covered them under warranty. i just find it unusual that the rear brakes would do this so early in the life of the vehicle when the front brakes look like they have barely been touched. if i had been taking a turn or having to brake in an emergency i don¿t know what all could have happened when i have rear metal to metal instead of the oem brake pads to protect me.

i have a 09ss/tc and i have a problem with my back rotors with lines and grooves in them. i only have 4000 miles on my car now. i took it to the dealership at 3500 and the shop manager argued with me that it is normal wear and tear and that the back brakes are "aggressive" style pads. and he argued that the back do more stopping power than the front. they haven't done anything about this problem yet and i know that many other cars of the same model have this problem. the main mechanic did confirm that it isn't a normal wear but said that the car is too new to anything about it. please help us out i really don't want this to cause an accident or for me to have to pay for all new rotors and pads at my expense because of their mess up.

i just bought my car in april of 2009. i own a 2009 chevrolet cobalt ss and i am seeing a fairly quick brake wear rating on the back brakes. upon closer examination, i notice the brakes have some pretty deep groves which i have never seen before on brakes discs on a car. i researched these grooves online and apparently its called "scorching". its what's responsible for wearing the brakes as quickly as they are. it seems too be caused by fragments of metal not filed down on the rear calipers etching out the rear rotors. its also been brought to my attention that the calipers compress the rear rotors harder on the inside of the rotor than the outside. this might be another reason to the scorching.

my cobalt was purchased 3/5/2009, and has only 5400 miles on it as of 9/8/2009. i do not drive aggressively and the car is pretty much just daily driven to work/home. the rear brakes are already exhibiting what i'd consider to be abnormal wear, especially when compared to my other vehicles. the rotors are becoming deeply scored and the inside brake pads are worn much more than the outside. have been told me this is "normal" (along with a host of other issues, including oil leaks from the engine). there are several hundred people on a national cobalt forum also experiencing this issue. the root cause appears to be the parking brake not fully allowing the caliper to retract, but i'm not an engineer.

this is my second complaint on the same problem, see #10278491. excessive scoring of rear brake rotors. the dealer turned the rotors at 4600 miles, at my cost. subsequently, chevrolet action center sent me a letter for $100 credit on service. now at 7500 miles, they look pretty bad again. the dealer agreed this time to warranty pads & rotors, one time only. this is a manufacturing defect causing a safety problem. there have been a number of reports that the caliper pins were not lubricated at the factory, causing binding of the pads on the rotors. others believe there is a pad/rotor incompatibility issue.

rear brakes on vehicle begin by squeaking regularly. upon inspecting them at roughly 6000 miles on the brand new car, the inner brake pads are completely worn while the outer pads are nearly new (as they should be). one possible cause of this is that the parking brake spring is not strong enough to hold the inner pads from rubbing the rotors when the parking brake is disengaged. gm should recall this brake issue as it will continue to cost buyers hundreds every few thousand miles, when all that is needed is likely a spring with a better spring rate.

i noticed that the rear brake rotors were slightly scored when i got the car from the dealership new, i didn't think much of it since i was excited to get the car. they also make noise then applying the brakes. i've noticed to that some times after driving and parking, i can smell burning brake pad material. i currently have about 2500 miles on the car and the rotors have scored more considerably. i believe that the pads and rotors won't make it another 2500 miles without being replaced. after searching the internet i found that others are having this same issue with their cars. the car is a 2009 chevrolet cobalt ss sedan. i found that this issue affects the ss sedan and ss coupe alike. it would be nice if gm would issue a recall on this, as this could pose a potential safety issue down the road.

my vehicle is a 2009 chevrolet cobalt ss coupe purchased new in march of 2009. after 15,000 miles (about a year's worth of driving), the rear brake rotors were pitted and scored, and when the brakes were applied a metal-on-metal grinding noise would occur. also, after getting wet from driving in the rain, then allowing to vehicle to rest for a short period of time, enough rust would build up on the rear brakes that a copious amount of throttle would be needed to break free the pads from the rotors to move the vehicle forward. after taking the car to the selling dealer for inspection/repair, i was told this part was a wearable item and not covered under my manufacturer¿s warranty. i explained that most all owners of cobalt ss models between the 2008 - 2010 model years were experiencing similar rear brake issues, but was told that did not matter. the parts were not covered under warranty, and if i would like them repaired/replaced, i would have to pay for the parts and labor.

i purchased my 2009 chevy cobalt ss/tc in early june of 2010. it was a gm certified used car. when i inspected the car before purchasing i noticed that the brakes were heavily worn and i let the salesmen know about it. he told me that there was almost 70% left on the pads and everything checked out fine . so i did the dumbest thing i could do and took his word for it. after about 5 months and 4000 miles later my rear brakes start making a scraping noise while in reverse and while light braking around corners mostly out of the passenger side.. i took it in for maintenance expecting some kind of manufacturer defect but instead i'm accused of bad driving and letting my e-brake drag. the issue was that the rear calipers were sticking and not retracting properly and the pistons inside were bent causing uneven pad wear. both sides moisture boots on the pistons looked like they were pinched and broken during the factory installation. so now here i am with a bill for almost $1000 dollars for rear pads, rotors and calipers and on a car that is just over 2 years old with almost 2 years on a factory bumper to bumper warranty. i'm sorry but the calipers to me are a mechanical defected part and should be covered under warranty.

i last checked my brakes when i took off my snow tires in march with 18,000 miles on my car. everything looked fine, front and rear pads looked almost new with plenty of meat on them. in july, i noticed that the rear brakes were starting to groove, so i mentioned this to the dealer when i went in for a recall and they resurfaced them for me (22,885 miles). i asked about the pads and they told me that they had looked at them and they were fine and everything looked normal. in october, i noticed the grooving coming back. i took it back to the dealer, and they charged me to replace the rear disks and pads at 29,170 miles (they did throw in the rotors for free due to the abnormal wear). after the service, they gave me the old rear pads as per my request. upon receiving them, i couldn't help but notice that the inner rear pad, which had been wearing identically to the outer rear pads when i checked at 18,000 miles, were worn almost to the backing plate! the outer pads still had 1/4" material left, so it seemed clear that something was not right. the dealer could find no reason for this wear and stated that everything was normal besides the brake wear. it seems incredible that a front-heavy, front-drive car would wear through its inner rear brake pads while its front pads (which do most of the braking) and outer rear pads still have plenty of life left without there being some kind of problem. i still have the pads and also have pictures. i am concerned that if these pads wear down so quickly, i could be put in a situation where i unexpectedly have no e-brake and compromised braking ability despite frequent inspections. i am also concerned that gm is more interested in selling me parts than in diagnosing and correcting the root of the problem. i have heard from the both chevy dealers and other owners that this is a somewhat common problem with my car, and i would like to see it resolved. thank you.

i last checked my brakes when i took off my snow tires in march with 18,000 miles on my car. everything looked fine, front and rear pads looked almost new with plenty of meat on them. in july, i noticed that the rear brakes were starting to groove, so i mentioned this to the dealer when i went in for a recall and they resurfaced them for me (22,885 miles). i asked about the pads and they told me that they had looked at them and they were fine and everything looked normal. in october, i noticed the grooving coming back. i took it back to the dealer, and they charged me to replace the rear disks and pads at 29,170 miles (they did throw in the rotors for free due to the abnormal wear). after the service, they gave me the old rear pads as per my request. upon receiving them, i couldn't help but notice that the inner rear pad, which had been wearing identically to the outer rear pads when i checked at 18,000 miles, were worn almost to the backing plate! the outer pads still had 1/4" material left, so it seemed clear that something was not right. the dealer could find no reason for this wear and stated that everything was normal besides the brake wear. it seems incredible that a front-heavy, front-drive car would wear through its inner rear brake pads while its front pads (which do most of the braking) and outer rear pads still have plenty of life left without there being some kind of problem. i still have the pads and also have pictures. i am concerned that if these pads wear down so quickly, i could be put in a situation where i unexpectedly have no e-brake and compromised braking ability despite frequent inspections. i am also concerned that gm is more interested in selling me parts than in diagnosing and correcting the root of the problem. i have heard from the both chevy dealers and other owners that this is a somewhat common problem with my car, and i would like to see it resolved. thank you.

brakes started squealing a few months after buying the car brand new. now, about 1.5 years later, they are grinding an excessive amount and their performance has extremely decreased. i fear i will have to change entire rotors and pads to fix this problem out of my own pocket within the next month on good aftermarket parts since the factory can't produce good quality oem parts and general motors doesn't give a flying ****. i informed my local dealer of the problem and they shrugged me off, but only after wanting to charge me $60 to just look at them. i shouldn't have to pay for them to inspect brakes that are faulty in under 2 years, and 20,000 miles; and i also have an extended warranty that i paid for. apparently, it's just mainly the rear brakes that are the issue with these cars, but every owner i know, who hasn't already replaced the brakes with aftermarket performance parts, have the exact same issue, and in some cases, much worse. if the brakes fail within the next month or two and an accident happens(quite possible since rust is appearing on one of my rear rims due to the rotors being scoured so excessively, i fear one of them may let go and snap completely off)before either a recall, or i put aftermarket products on, gm will be facing a lawsuit by yours truly; especially if serious injury occurs.

my car has grooves because of sub par brake pads in rear and my rotors will have to be replaced due to cheap pads chewing deep grooves on a 09 cobalt ss with 20k. fronts have ceramic pads so no wear at all. mechanic said they used expensive ceramic up front and cheap semi metallic in back and now the only fix is new ceramic pads but the rotors are to far gone to be resurfaced. cheap gm factory flaw which should require a recall to replace.

i brought my 2009 cobalt ss into the dealer for routine maintenance, 20k mileage check. it has a 5-speed manual transmission. they informed me that my rear rotors were scored badly possibly from the emergency brake being on while driving. the dealer informed me the surface was too far gone to turn them. i'm the only person that drives the car and i know i don't drive with the e-brake on, not even once. however, i do pull the e-brake when i park my car with the trans in gear. let me say also i do not drive the car hard like racing or drifting. i did pull the tire and rotor from the left rear to find that the inner rotor surface was indeed scored badly within 3/4-inch of the outer rotor diameter. the outer rotor surface was clean and smooth. the outer brake pad looked like it had 2x the material left versus the inner pad. i did not pull the right side rotor yet. (my new brake rotor order got fouled up. still waiting.) like many of the other people who have complained, my car has slightly over 21k miles on it so why should it need rear brakes so quickly? most of the wear should be on the front brakes due to weight and momentum during braking. something doesn't add up. will it happen again with the new rotors?

the cobalt brakes have always made a screeching sound, which gm has addressed as being normal. chevrolet #08-05-22-004: information on brake squeal/squeak noise - (jul 15, 2008)] however, i had to prematurely replace the rear brakes and have the rotors cut after only 27,039 miles, while the front brakes still had 50% life left. this is not a normal occurrence, since the front brakes should have worn out before the rear ones. while i was able to get 27,039 miles of wear, the fact that there is definitely a defect in the system means there is no guarantee that the condition will not worsen in time. there is also the chance that the system could fail completely causing a serious accident. finally, the screeching sound is getting worse. this sound, along with the brake wear, will virtually reduce the value of the car considerably, making it nearly impossible to trade or sell, unless gm corrects this issue.

car suddenly showed symptoms of coolant loss a dye and pressure test was completed and found no external leaks. i drove the car to work the next day 15 minute commute and upon ariving low coolant indicator poped up i checked the dip stick to confirm my fear that the coolant was entering my oil system 1-way. had the car towed to the dealership and after 2 weeks of teardown verified the engine had not signs of abuse and the head and headgasket was not warped or leaking/blown. the car was 2 months out of warranty and gm declined warranty. luckily i have a 3rd party warranty and they agreed to complete the work due to known issues with said engine/ symptoms . gm notified me they did not have a engine available and it would be until october before the engine was replaced and denied to offer rental while i waited after a month of fighting with gm customer service they agreed to lend a rental car. to this day my car sits in a lot rotting away. a short google search of cracked lnf engines will bring a host of results even major gm aftermarket performance companys are aware of defective castings of the lnf engine .. below are a few examples http://www.cobaltss.net/forums/drivetrain-79/cracked-block-2008-2-0-turbo-62kmi-213316/ http://www.cobaltss.net/forums/problems-service-maintenance-69/who-has-had-cracked-porous-block-lnf-287721/
