TIRES

2011 camaro tires do not grip the road properly & low temperatures like here in n.y. during the winter months. i just purchased this vehicle & at no point was i told that the tires are for summer use only. this is my only vehicle & has to be used all year round. i did not think spending top dollar for a performance vehicle was going to mean that i could only operate it safely 8 months out of the year??? this vehicle was shipped to ny, to be sold in ny! why would this happen? the tires cannot be trusted & i fear it will cause someone there life.

TIRES

the tires on my 2011 chevy camaro (and other models) are perelli p-zero tires which are "summer" tires as indicated by the manufacturers. these tires are not recommended for near freezing temps. the auto manufacturer failed to inform me the tires (which are stock) are only recommended for warm weather. i believe the manufacturer has not informed most customers of the situation. my research indicates these tires exhibit more problems with handling in cold temps as tire wear increases. the manufacturer of the auto has indicated to me that their engineers are confident these tires are safe, but the tire manufacturer continues to recommend against using these tires in near freezing temps. as most of the continental usa is exposed to near freezing and below freezing temps, i am concerned these tires will result in crashes which could be avoided if the auto manufacturer provided proper tires for our climate. this is a problem which may go unnoticed as most accidents go un-investigated or an investigator will not consider the temps were near or below freezing at the time of the accident.

summer only tires sold as factory equipment on 2011 camaro. these tires provided no traction when i was caught in a snowstorm on the way to work. in only 1 to 2 inches of snow i could barely maintain control at 11 mph while other cars passed me like i was sitting still. i find it painfully frustrating that in a country where i must wear a seatbelt "for my protection", that a car company can sell a vehicle with such dangerous tires.

chevy camaro convertible top does not work when the button is pushed. something in the computer disables the top and does not allow it to close from an open postition, there is a eletrical switching sound that comes from the rear of the car and sometimes smells like an electrical fire. *tt

TIRES

while driving at a speed of 45 mph, my 2011 camaro with perelli p zero, 275/40-zr20 06y left tire blew out from hitting a pair of needle nose pliers in the road. the pliers went completly through the tread and i heard a pop as if the tire had been shot. the vehicle swerved approximately 30 degrees to left then back to the right violently. i was in the center lane of a 3 lane highway and no other vehicle was on either side of the camaro. it was difficult to regain control of the vehicle due to the immediate loss of tire pressure. this incident was reported to chevrolet on 15 july 2011 by letter. it occurred in tucson arizona. *tt

POWER TRAIN:MANUAL TRANSMISSION

second gear grind . 2011 camaro ls. six speed transmission. second gear grind occurs with every up shift or down shift . this occurs during acceleration and deceleration. at times car will not go into second gear at all causing concern for safety . i have contacted gm who has addressed the issue once but the repair was made with the same defective products. the issue returned after 3,000 miles. the attempted repair was. synchronizers, new first and second gears, ball bearings and forks. again after 3,000 miles the grind and second gear failure has returned and what appears to be worse then the first time. my car has not been modified and is full stock.

after only 12,500 miles and 9 months, the clutch in my 2011 v6 camaro ls burnt out. the dealership is telling me that it looks like i drove it "aggressively." i have not, as it is my only vehicle and i obviously need it for work. they are not covering the clutch because it is 500 miles over my "wearable parts warranty." now i have sent an email complaining about the issue to chevrolet and they are sending a regional technician out to look at the car. but the fact remains that this is a common issue (check the camaro5.com forums) and should be fixed somehow.

when merging into high speed traffic the transmission grinds/rejects second gear in the manual transmission causing the car to jerk and slow down unexpectedly. i almost was in a accident due to the missed shift.

2011 chevy camaro less than 10,000k miles. driving in traffic in maybe a 1% grade hill. burning smell, the car wouldn't catch in 1st or 2nd gear. lost all acceleration, had to cross multiple lanes on the highway. sat in the car for over 2 hours for towing company. then shop test drove next day, gears work, but bad burning smell continues. shipped to chevrolet. i did research online and see multiple people have this problem. this is a safety hazard and it placed my life into danger!

within only one month convertible top had to be replaced. after 6 months another hole is developing on the convertible top due to chaffing from the frame assembly when down. it looks like the frame assembly is causing the damage to the convertible top. gm has changed the first top but has put the second top in a status of awaiting engineering. top is still not changed. almost 4000 miles on car now.

1.convertible in the shop over 45 days. 2.cables from top showing on driver and passenger side above windows. 3.cable prohibits opening passenger door/makes opening driver door tough. 4.exhaust rattles incessantly. 5. had 2 broken bows on top at 1st. 6. original top had a hole in it. 7. new top and 2 bows replaced. new top had wear marks in various places ? when we got it back, and getting more thread bare each day. marks were on it the day we got it back. 8. other convertible owners state their wear went through all the way to the rivets. other owners calling us from different parts of us to compare notes, same issues, same results with gm. concerned top may fly off. 9. rubber parts from top falling off/will not stay on. 10. cannot put tonneau cover on or keep it on over 50 mph. it flies off & hits cars behind us.11. windshield cracked when top closed w motor drive. 12. wind noise in it was less than our past new camaros. now noise level with the top up is noisy enough to have to yell when on speakerphone. at 1st, it was very quiet. 13. large gaps on the side of the top where it meets the body when it is up ? you could place your arm into the holes. dealer fixed 2 times. 14. spent over 2.5g lettering the car for our business, decal-deleted, detail company waxing, tinted windshield and windows. gm corporate says they will place us in a new hard top camaro, but will not pay ttl, re-waxing, re-lettering car, decal deleting or tinting. ok law states that ttl is indeed covered. 15. this is not a dealer issue, this is a gm issue. 16. dealers cannot fix the top in a manner that gm has not put a service bulletin out on. we do not want to bring it back in until they have said bulletin. 17. we do not feel as though long gm fans should be out thousands of dollars for re-lettering, customization and ttl for getting a vehicle that they still claim that they do not know how to fix.

VISIBILITY

the windshield in my 2011 camaro appears to have optical distortion which creates a ghosting effect that is very distracting. in particular, at night when there are headlights, tail-lights, traffic lights, road signs, and etcetera it is especially bad. this is even seen with sunlight reflections during daytime driving. the reason i feel it is optical distortion in the windshield is because if i raise my head to the very top portion of the windshield, the optical distortion goes away. i feel this is indicative of an anomaly/defect in the windshield itself. i had the windshield replaced once with a new factory windshield and i'm still having the same optical distortion issues. i'm currently trying to have the issue resolved. in my opinion, this is indeed a serious safety hazard in which i have never experienced in any other vehicle i've ever driven (which makes it even more strange). it is my hope that this testimony will be helpful to anyone else having similar issues.

the first failure was at 4500 miles in the middle lane as car pulled infront and when i hit the brakes the car when into a skid and the steering wheel locked up at approx 40 mph.this defect did not crash the car. the second incident was at approx 70 on the free way as a car came through the triangle at a junction i hit the brakes the steering wheel cranked all the way to the right and locked up as did the braking system throwing me head on into a guard rail at approx 60. the air bags did not deploy as well. the following day at the car yard while the key was inserted by the technician the car said that airbags depleted need replacing.

POWER TRAIN

there is a notchiness when shifting into second gear from first under hard acceleration. this results in a second gear grind and i am unable to get into second gear sometimes. also, occasionally the transmission will pop out of second gear and return to neutral resulting in no acceleration, which is a serious problem when pulling out into traffic. i have read about several people with the same issues as me, especially with grinding second gear, and gm simply needs to fix the issue instead of saying that the transmission is "operating as intended". i have been dreaming of owning a new camaro since the announcement that it was coming back to market, but it has been a nightmare with transmission issues since day 1 with no fix from the dealer.

i recently purchased a 2011 camaro ss. this was a gift to my wife because she had always loved the camaro. the car was purchased at a chevrolet dealership. my wife drove the car home about 70 miles with no trouble at all. a few days later the temperature in north carolina dropped to around 40 deg and started to rain. my wife took my daughter to the store and she was unable to get above 30 mph because the car was uncontrollable due to the rear end constantly fish tailing. i was called by her crying because she was so scared. i contacted a friend to go and get the car and he called me as he was driving telling me what the car was doing. after doing some research on line i found out that the pirelli pzero tires that come standard on the ss and rs camaro are summer only? tires. these tires are only to be driven in temperatures above 45 deg and in dry conditions! i am currently in the middle east and relied totally on the dealership to inform my wife of any issues or warnings that should have come with the car. also chevrolet is totally at fault by selling, as standard equipment, a tire that is dangerous to the point of being criminal when driven in weather conditions that cover most of the united states. i had to purchases, at the cost of over $1000.00, a set of tires that are ?all season? so my wife can drive safely. i should not have to be paying over $40,000.00 for a car that i need to spend another grand on just to make it safe to drive. this is totally and completely unacceptable. i will notify everyone and anyone that i can about the hazards of this situation.

[xxx] march 7, 2012 gm po box 33170 detroit, mi 48232-5170 re: case [xxx] greetings: i wish to file a formal complaint regarding my 2011 camaro 2ss/rs convertible. the safety critical passenger air bag (inflatable restraint) does not work properly and reads off when a passenger in excess of 160 lbs is in the passenger seat. this problem is intermittent, about 50% of the time, but reproducible. it has been acknowledged and reproduced on multiple occasions by certified gm mechanics at freeway chevrolet in chandler, arizona, with multiple employees of freeway chevrolet of varying weights in the passenger seat. i have summarized the repair attempts below: datedays out of servicemileagecomments 6/28/201131,475module replacement 9/15/201122,246sensor and module replacement 10/19/201122,856sensor replacement 12/21/2011143,916reprogram module. service rep able to reproduce problem on this car but no other identical models with multiple passengers and weights. 3/5/201224,854reproduced connected to odbc interface at freeway chevrolet with 160 lb passenger in car (my wife). level 4 indicated on odbc (non adult passenger present). wife exited and re-entered passenger seat. level 6 indicated on odbc. wife sat in identical car on lot and problem could not be reproduced. the latest response advised by shane schmitt of gm is the vehicle is functioning as designed. this response is unacceptable because: 1.a 160 lb adult passenger must activate the air bag sensor. 2.the issue is intermittent (about 50% of the time). the same person should not be classified as level 4 and level 6 with the seat in the identical position and no change in body position. 3.this intermittent issue could not be reproduced in any other gm vehicle, including an identical model. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

picked up car after being in back and forth all week at lucas chevy,in nj. the car was driven less than 40 miles after they replaced the steering rack. picked up on wed 8/8/12 after car was supposed to be done on 8/7. i had to bring the car back on 8/9/12 as the car was pulling and steering wheel off center. they never aligned the front end! i had to drop car back on 8/9/12 again that night as steering was binding and shuddering again!the dealer called me that friday 8/10 and said the pick up the car everything was fine ,it was low on fluid. when i checked the fluid on wed 8/8 the fluid was clear as power steering fluid is. when i picked the car back up on 8/10/12 i had to bring back again because p/s reservoir was soaked with fluid/i also saw they switched p/s fluid to transmission fluid!the service manager who didn't even know where the reservoir was or how to remove the engine cover wiped it clean and said have a nice day. on 8/12/12 while trying to back in driveway the steering locked and is now clunking with a metallic grind and also the brake fluid reservoir was wet with brake fluid again after cap was replaced two months ago! i also noticed they replaced both outer tie rod ends without telling me or putting it on the paperwork!the car is so dangerous it had to be towed to lucas chevrolet again!they are being dictated on what to do by gm legal as i had enough and filed a lemon law claim!its been to 3 dealers and has had a new steering column, intermediate shaft, angle sensor, srs coil, new tie rod ends and that just in the steering alone! what right is right,they did fix the clunking in the rear from the drive shaft on the first try!

5-26-2012: convertible top support broke. fixed by dealer. now severe other issues with convertible top, including but not limited to the car floors flooding when it rains, wind noise from the rear quarter glass, and severe "rub" marks from the structural top assembly. car has been out of service for 69 days and at the dealership for over 44 days. it is still at the dealership. gm/chevrolet has been negligent in the handling of the repairs, along with the complete improper design of the top assembly. the dealer does not know how to fix it and gm/chevrolet hasn't provided enough support to get the issues resolved.

leaving work and the clutch stuck when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear then there was a terrible burning smell and it stalled in the middle of an intersection. then while i was on the highway driving 65mph i down-shifted from 6th to 5th for upcoming slower traffic and the clutch stuck again and the car starts to stall. both times i had pressed on the gas thinking the clutch would come out and it didn't so then there was terrible burning smell. i finally got the clutch unstuck both times and proceeded home. it didn't do it while driving to work but my car had been in the garage all night. however, at work my car sits outside all day and it was really cold that day. i notified the dealer first thing in the morning and they are looking at it.

at 70 miles per hour the boot cover would blow off. went to two different dealers they didnt know what to do.i was looking at one on showroom floor and figured out two bolts was missing on mine. they fixed it and give me a new boot end of that problem. the other problem when you turn steering all the way to left it makes a grinding noise. one dealer told me he couldt hear anything. the next dealer told me they all did it. the next dealer changed rear end oil. still makes noise. it sounds like the bump stop lets it go to far. if you bring the wheel back a half inch it quits this is my wifes car she really likes this car.

i was turning right while driving the vehicle and then by mistake the back right tire and wheel hit the curve and that made a little damage to the wheel and the wheel is little bit diagonal. worst case scenario the bearings is broken. my complaint is why would the airbags deploy that moment while the impact is only on the wheel? also my friend was sitting on the passenger seat and after the airbag deployed the powder that comes out from it got on his skin and he got burned from it, since that is a very dangerous and can cause burns if it gets on unprotected skin, and it can severely irritate the lungs if inhaled. the main point is the airbag shouldn't deploy in a small damage as this, i have said that because i experienced it with 2010 s600 mercedes benz, the damage was way way worse then the one on the camaro. the damage on the s600 was to wheels broken and the body got effected and the accident was very similar to the camaro and the airbag on the s600 didn't deploy and mercedes have better quality and more safety then chevrolet. i went to the royal chevrolet in west broad street richmond, virginia. they didn't treat me well they were talking to me as child they didn't even inspect the car they just the airbags did what it suppose to do that was by the service manager. i told him the damage was very minor and the deployment of the airbag shouldn't happen he didn't even say anything he was trying to flip the whole thing on me. he told i have nothing to do go call gm.

vehicle was purchased not knowing there was a problem with the convertible tops. top started coming in a whole so took to dealership and would not fix. filed a complaint with gm they put a new top on it then had to have new frame because it was bent picked up last week and now top has pulled away from windows after top had been on car less than a week. if we were to be in a wreck back passenger's arm could go out opening and be cut off. gm needs to be made to purchase these cars back before someone gets killed, have material where people have posted these tops coming completely off cars going down the road once they separate from windows as mine have. i am scared to drive my car and it has stayed in the shop more than i have got to drive it. back floor board is wet from water pouring in where opening is and it sounds like a train is coming through you car their so much wind noise.

after having been replaced under warranty, the convertible top suddenly came a lose at the mounting points behind the side windows. it was as if a parachute, or a drag chute opened. this startled the driver into steering sharply towards the shoulder, causing the car to spin out and resulted in a neck pain in the driver.

having issues with car maintaining oil levels. 1st instance did oil consumption then found it was leaking from engine seal, replaced that then another oil consumption @ 1000 miles later to find out it was leaking from some sort of plug, replaced that, another oil consumption test @ 2000 miles to only find out it was low on oil again, gm told the dealer to do a top engine cleaner on it. then gm replaced the whole engine cover assembly and seals and informed me that you couldn't use dextose full synthetic because the seals and rings wouldn't sit right and that oil was made for corvettes and cadillac , three days later check engine light came on. went back to the dealer they just cleared the code and told me to drive it. not even 1/2 way home noticed the car wouldn't accelerate, called dealer and took it back, finding out the catalytic converter was bad needed to be replaced. replaced that. it's only been 2000 and now the oil level is on the end of the dip stick. when speaking to the service manager he said not to go by the oil % life on the car as it wasn't accurate. to change at 5000 miles. but being at the end of the dip stick the math isn't adding up. car at the dealer now and got a call everything is in spec per gm and it's burning 1 qt per 2000 miles, nothings wrong. clearly you can see oil residue on the alternator and brand new engine cover they just put on. *jb

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

throttle body positioner is bad after barely over 3 years of use. was reducing speed from 55 to 0, after coming off a highway approaching a stop light, and while in neutral "engine power is reduced" warning displayed on screen, vehicle began idling irregularly (bouncing between 800 and 1100 rpms) and then when the light turned green the car would not accelerate. was able to limp at about 20 mph until i reached a parking lot, turned the car off and waited a few minutes, restarted and it was fine again. problem has occurred on 3 separate occasions recently, gm mechanic said throttle body positioner was determined to be at fault. should not be any faults after 3 years and 40k unless the part itself is faulty.

while traveling 60 mph my car started shaking violently and the check engine light came on. i safely pulled to the side of the road. checked the engine could physically see anything wrong with it. i checked the oil and the dipstick was almost dry. my oil change was overdue by 3000 miles. last oil changed i used full synthetic oil thinking i could go a little further between oil changes. never received a oil pressure indicator light on my display. i would have thought that i should have received some type of indication that my oil pressure or oil level was low. now left with the high cost of replacing the engine.

i had just purchased this camaro in february, not knowing that these tires were not to be used in cold weather. we had some very cold weather in the last part of february and i decided to take the camaro to work. when i entered the paved road it started to spin the tires on the pavement. there was no moisture on the roads and no reason to loose traction. when i got home i researched this problem on line and found out about the tires being warm weather tires only. i think chevrolet should replace the tires with all weather tires. ps tires were not listed i had to use unknown or other to be able to use this site. thanks

on 4 different occasions, the service airbag indicator has turned on in my car. it has been in the service department each time with work listed as connections cleaned, sensor checked, warning reset.....but no replacement parts and nothing noted as defective. i've been told putting a lap top on the passenger seat could set off the sensor.....a blue-tooth call could set off the sensor, but not why? most recent trip (#5) to hendricks motors was 04/24/2014. we picked the car up, ran errands (appx. 40 miles) and the light is on again - the same day! i have been told the air bags will still deploy, the air bags might deploy, and the air bags will not deploy, as long as the service light is on. what is my next step? i am trying to document everything in case there is an accident and the bags don't deploy.

i saw spots of liquid on my driveway and when i checked my car's various fluid levels, the power steering fluid was so low it didn't show on the dip stick. i contacted my dealer service center and made an appointment right away. they discovered that the inner seal on the steering gear had failed. it was not due to an accident, collision, hitting a pothole or anything caused by me. this was a factory failure and a problem that is very rare on cars with mileage that low (so i was told). the car was just over 5000 miles outside its factory warranty and the repair cost me $1034.07. fortunately, the power steering pump was not damaged from being completely out of fluid or the repair would have been even more costly. the most disturbing thing is that i had absolutely no warning of this problem at all. it was a sudden and complete failure.

the airbag need service alert came on while my husband was driving and i on the passenger side. the next morning i called ivory chevrolet and was told the earliest i could be seen was monday @ 8:30am ,because they only had one person that could fix the problem. i arrived @ 7:45am. at 9:00am i was asked, what's my issue and at 11:00 i asked why it was taking so long for a diagnostic and was told someone will check. guy approach me @ 12:00 and advice me that they reset the sensor and to keep my purse out of the car seat. three days later the airbag alert & tire alert came on. onstar system do not show data for the front passenger side tire. i spoke with a serviceman @ ivory and was told to come back in. i really don't understand why there isn't a recall on this issue and request an explanation.

my air bag light has been on for 2 years now. i have took my car to the dealership 7 times to get this problem fixed. my vehicle was under warranty when i took it in so i didn't have to pay any money for the services. out of all seven times they never fixed the air bag. now i brought it in again and they are charging me $109 for services to fix my airbag. the air bag light has been on for 2 years, meaning if i get into a wreck my airbag won't work. every time my car was released from the service department my air bag light immediately came back on after the passenger seat was adjusted. i suppose all they did was wiggle the wire under the passenger seat to get the air bag light to go off in order to return my car to me knowing that it wasn't fixed. now they are charging me money to get the air bag fixed when it's not my fault the airbag doesn't work. i believe the manufacturer should be at fault for this problem. in addition, while my car was in the dealership services department they provided me with a rental from enterprise. but they used my insurance company instead of paying $17 a day for enterprises's insurance company. i believe this is wrong because it is the manufacturer's fault that my air bag system doesn't work properly and they should pay for enterprise's insurance on the rental car i was provided with. the trunk of my car also is broke and they are charging me $182 in order to get it fixed but i have full coverage warranty on my vehicle.

while riding in the passenger seat the air bag light switch from on to off setting several times riding down the road, it would stay on the off position for sometimes and then switch to on setting, you would have to touch the menu button in the car to get the alarm from beeping. i check and found there are a couple of service bulletins out on this issue. i called the dealership where the car was purchase and they wanted to charge me a service fee of $110.00 because the car just has went out of warranty. i feel this is a safety issue that should be taken care of by gm. if i am riding in the car with the air bag off this is a safety issue, i do not want to loose my life over something that gm should repair and has known about since 2009. there should be a recall on this defect to repair the air bag, this is a safety issue and lives are at risk.

i woke up one day to find the air bag light on. i didn't think anything of it until i went to get the car inspected. the car was rejected due to the light being on. the dealership, who has done all the service since the car was purchased, told us it would be $90 to figure out what was causing the light to be on. it turns out it is the passenger side air bag sensor until the seat, the car has less than 32,000 miles on it. the passenger seat has not been used enough for it to be worn down. the cost to cure this is $729! from my understanding this car is not the only one with the issue. my dealership said they have had another vehicle which had the same thing. i have looked on the internet and have seen other camaro owners who have had similar issues. i have filed a compliant with gm and i am awaiting their findings.

gm safety recall 14294, we had no issues with the ignition key prior to the recall. we took our camaro to the gm dealership, had the recall taken care of. upon driving the camaro after the ignition key was changed due to the recall, it is now more of a safety hazard with the key actually dangling down on our knee/legs while driving. we would appreciate the opportunity to get the previous ignition key refigured as it was when we purchased the camaro as we had no problems/issues with it prior to following the recall instructions of taking our camaro to the dealer.
