NHTSA Campaign: 15V838000 SAFETY RECALL
4 Vehicles Affected
Recall Date: Dec 14, 2015
Safety Issue:

Charmac Trailers Inc. (Charmac) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Horse and Cargo trailers manufactured March 16, 2015, to September 25, 2015, and equipped with certain 3500lb-capacity torsion model axles. The weld that secures the torsion arm assembly may fail allowing the tire, wheel, hub, and torsion arm to separate from the trailer.

Potential Risk:
A separation of the torsion arm can result in a loss of trailer stability and control, increasing the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Charmac will notify owners, and dealers will replace the suspect axles, free of charge. The recall began on January 28, 2016. Owners may contact Charmac customer service at 1-208-733-5241.

Defect Description:

WHEELS

Potential Consequences:

We were traveling 2.5 hours from our home to pick up a horse we recently purchased. We were towing our 2016 Horse trailer. We were flagged down by a motorist that was following us that stated our wheel of the Charmac trailer came flying off and was in a field a mile back. Fortunately, no one was hurt. Upon inspection the weld that secures the torsion arm assembly failed. This resulted in the tire, wheel, hub, and torsion arm separating from the trailer. Our trailer is now stuck 2.5 hrs from home until we can safely tow it. I researched our problem and found out that Charmac has a recall for 2015-16 trailers but I don’t think my trailer is included. It should be. I’m afraid the other axle will fail also. This trailer is in excellent shape and hasn’t been used much. Two independent service centers confirmed the problem, Les Schwab and a towing/body shop in WA State. No inspection by police or manufacturer. No warning lamps. Our safety and the safety of others was at risk, we were going 55 mph at the time of the incident.
