Toyota RAV4 And Lexus NX450h+ PHEV Potential Electrical Issue
Toyota is reaching out to owners of select 2021-2022 RAV4 Prime and 2022 Lexus NX450h+ plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) vehicles due to a potential electrical problem. Find out more about the recall and steps to resolve it.
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) has initiated a recall campaign for specific models of their 2021-2022 RAV4 Prime and 2022 Lexus NX450h+ plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) vehicles. The purpose of this action is to address a production-related issue concerning the electric current rectifying module within the DC-DC converter.
The plug-in hybrid system in these vehicles utilizes a DC-DC converter to lower the voltage from the Hybrid Vehicle (HV) battery for charging the 12V battery. The DC-DC converter contains an electric current rectifying module, which is responsible for regulating the flow of electricity. However, it has been discovered that some of these modules may have incurred damage during the manufacturing process, potentially leading to operational failures.
If the affected module fails, it may result in a short circuit. In such cases, the module would permit the continuous flow of current from the 12V battery, generating excessive heat. Under certain circumstances, this excess heat could cause thermal damage to various components within and surrounding the DC-DC converter, thereby elevating the risk of a vehicle fire.
Toyota became aware of this issue in June 2021 after receiving a field report describing a driver's observation of a warning message on the display and smoke emanating from the rear seal while operating the vehicle. Upon initial inspection, the damage was found to be concentrated on a plastic cooling duct located beneath the rear seat of the DC-DC converter.
To mitigate the potential risk, owners are strongly advised against charging their vehicles when the ambient air temperature is at or below 41 degrees Fahrenheit (5 degrees Celsius). Toyota dealerships will rectify the problem by replacing the DC-DC converter. For reference, Toyota has designated this recall as 23TB07/23LB01, while the NHTSA campaign number is 23V-478.
If you own one of the affected vehicles, it is crucial to take prompt action and follow the instructions provided by Toyota to ensure your safety and the integrity of your vehicle. Contact your nearest Toyota dealership or refer to the official recall notice for further details and assistance.
