Takata have expanded their already massive airbag recall to include an additional 3.3 million frontal air bag inflators that could explode and launch dangerous metal fragments into the vehicle’s cabin. This is the third of five planned recalls which began in May 2016 and is expected to continue through to December 2019.
The announcement comes after another death involving a 2002 Honda Accord with Takata airbags. The latest fatality was struck by metal pieces that burst through the airbag while the other three occupants in the car received only minor injuries. Test data shows that some older vehicles are more likely to experience the defect, and as a result the NHTSA have issued a critical warning regarding the vehicles listed below.
NOTE: This list is subject to change and does not guarantee that any specific vehicle is or is not included in any of the Takata recalls. Vehicle owners are urged to use NHTSA’s Recalls Lookup Tool to check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) for any open recalls, including Takata recalls.
