2019-2021 Mercedes Benz G550 and G63 AMG Door Latch Problems

Mercedes-Benz USA is recalling certain 2019-2021 G550 and G63 AMG vehicles because components within the door latch may prevent the rear doors from latching or opening properly.

In the end of January 2021 Mercedes Benz initiated an investigation into certain G-Class vehicles after being contacted by a dealer looking for replacement parts for the rear door latch of a customers' vehicle. The investigation found a shortage of latch parts and a number of warranty claims involving the performance of the rear door latched and replacement of the door latch components. These warranty claims included driver reports that the rear door unexpectedly opened while driving.

The investigation found that due to variances in the installation of the internal components not all door latches were susceptible to the condition. Depending on the tolerances of the components within the latches, the rear doors might not be fully closed even though they appear to be closed, and could open while driving under certain types of driving maneuvers and road conditions. Further, if the child safety lock is activated on the rear doors and excessive force is used to attempt to open the doors from inside, the internal latching components may deform and prevent the rear doors from being opened.

Drivers may be warned there is an issue through an illuminated open door warning in the instrument cluster. Owners of affected vehicles will be asked to return to their dealers to have the rear door latches replaced. Note: Vehicles repaired prior to this recall must return to dealers to have the repair performed.  The NHTSA Campaign Number for this recall 21V-353.
