Mazda3 and Mazda CX30 Deactivated Airbag Recall

On 2025-06-17 09:23:08

In a recent development, Mazda has identified a safety issue in certain 2024-2025 model year Mazda3 and CX30 vehicles due to a potential issue with the airbag system. The problem, which was first identified in June 2024, can cause the airbags to deactivate, leaving passengers unprotected in the event of a crash. This recall affects thousands of vehicles in the United States, U.S. Territories, and Canada.

The issue arises when the ignition switch is left in the "ON" position for two or more hours without the engine running, causing the battery to become completely depleted. When the battery is recharged and the vehicle is restarted, the airbag warning light illuminates, and the airbags will not deploy in the event of a crash. This is a critical safety concern, as airbags are designed to provide life-saving protection in the event of an accident.

Mazda initially attributed the problem to customer usage and/or error, as it was deemed non-safety related. However, after further investigation and discussions with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the company decided to initiate a safety recall for vehicles in the U.S., U.S. Territories, and Canadian markets. This decision demonstrates Mazda's commitment to prioritizing the safety of its customers, even if the issue is considered rare or unlikely.

The recall affects certain 2024-2025 Mazda3 and CX30 vehicles equipped with the Sophisticated Air Bag Sensor (SAS) unit. Dealers will correct the problem by reprogramming the SAS unit with improved software or replacing the unit altogether. This repair will ensure that the airbag system functions properly, providing critical protection in the event of an accident.

Mazda's investigation found that the issue is unique to the U.S. and Canadian markets, as no similar incidents have been reported in other regions. The company has assigned a recall number of 7525E, and the NHTSA campaign number is 25V-358. If you own a 2024-2025 Mazda3 or CX30 vehicle affected by this problem, it is essential to have your vehicle inspected and repaired as soon as possible.

In the meantime, Mazda advises owners to avoid leaving their ignition switch in the "ON" position for extended periods without starting the engine. This simple precaution can help prevent the issue from occurring in the first place. If you do experience an issue with your airbag warning light, contact a dealership or a qualified mechanic immediately.

As the automotive industry continues to evolve, safety recalls like this one serve as a reminder of the importance of ongoing testing, evaluation, and improvement. Manufacturers must remain vigilant in identifying and addressing potential safety concerns, and consumers must stay informed about any issues affecting their vehicles.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on July 28, 2025, and owners of affected vehicles will be notified with instructions on how to proceed with the recall repair.
