Loss Of Drive Power: 2023 – 2025 Jeep Wrangler 4xe PHEV

Jeep Wrangler Software Update

If you own or are considering purchasing a 2023–2025 Jeep Wrangler 4xe (plug-in hybrid) model, it’s vital to understand the serious safety recall issued by FCA US, LLC. This blog post breaks down what is affecting these vehicles, why it matters, which vehicles are impacted, and what steps you should take.

What’s the Problem?

The issue is a software defect introduced via an over-the-air (OTA) update, which may lead to a loss of drive power in affected vehicles.

  • Some 2023-2025 model year Wrangler 4xe PHEVs may have received a Firmware Over-The-Air (FOTA) update.
  • That update can cause incomplete communication between the Telematics Box Module (TBM) and the Hybrid Control Processor (HCP).
  • If the HCP resets while driving, the vehicle could lose motive power without warning.
  • The suspect production period begins Feb 21 2023 and ends June 5 2025 for vehicles that received the FOTA update. (These build dates correspond to those which may have been updated.)
  • The recall is numbered A7C by FCA US and is filed under National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) campaign 25V-710.

A sudden loss of drive power — especially while on the road — is a serious safety hazard. It can lead to loss of vehicle control, may increase crash risk, and the lack of warning makes it unpredictable.

Which Vehicles Are Affected?

  • Model years: 2023, 2024, 2025 Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.
  • Build window: Vehicles built from Feb 21 2023 to June 5 2025 that received the suspect FOTA update.
  • Estimated number of vehicles: ~24,238 units in this recall campaign.

It’s worth noting that this recall is in addition to prior recall issues with Wrangler 4xe models (e.g., battery fire risk), but the specific defect here is different (a software/communication failure).

What’s the Recall Status & What Does the Manufacturer Say?

  • On October 14, 2025: FCA US’s Technical Safety & Regulatory Compliance organization initiated an investigation after receiving over 200 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs) and noticed mention of the issue in online forums.
  • As of October 15, 2025: Records show 111 customer assistance reports, 69 field reports, and 55 service records in all markets related to this issue — no accidents or injuries have been reported yet.
  • FCA US determined that a safety defect does exist for these vehicles.
  • The official remedy is under development. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed November 25, 2025.

What Should Owners Do?

  • Avoid installing any pending OTA updates until your dealer confirms the fix. Because the defect is tied to a certain update, ensuring your software state may be important.
  • Be alert for warning signs such as sudden loss of drive power, unexpected resets, or unusual behaviour in your PHEV system.
  • Schedule service with your authorized Jeep/Chrysler dealer when your notification letter arrives.
  • Keep documentation. If you experience power loss, record the event, type of behaviour, where and when it happened — this may be helpful if you need to follow up.

This recall underscores the ever-growing complexity of plug-in hybrid systems — where not just mechanical/hardware failures, but software communication failures can create serious safety risks. If you own a 2023-2025 Jeep Wrangler 4xe, please take this recall seriously and act promptly when notified. And if you’re looking to buy one, make sure the recall status is clear and resolved.
