Lexus Backup Camera Failure
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing has announced a safety defect affecting more than 144,000 Lexus vehicles. The issue centers around a failure of the rearview camera system—something that could increase the risk of a backup collision.
Affected Vehicles
The recall includes the following models:
- 2022–2025 Lexus NX350
- 2022–2025 Lexus NX250
- 2023–2026 Lexus RX350
- 2024–2026 Lexus TX350
What’s the Problem?
The defect involves the rearview (backup) camera system, which may fail to display an image when the vehicle is shifted into reverse. Instead of showing the rear view, the screen may appear completely blank—leaving the driver without visibility behind the vehicle. This violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 111, which requires vehicles to provide a clear rearview image when reversing.
What Causes the Camera to Fail?
- The affected vehicles use a specific multimedia system and USB charger design
- The USB charger lacks a capacitor, which normally stabilizes voltage
- Under certain conditions, a voltage drop occurs during engine restart
- This interrupts the backup camera boot sequence
When does it happen?
The failure can occur if:
- The engine is running
- The ignition is turned OFF
- Then quickly turned back ON (within approximately 8 seconds)
When this happens, the camera system may not fully initialize—resulting in a blank screen when shifting into reverse.
Why This Is Dangerous
This is not just a minor inconvenience—it is a real safety risk.
Without a functioning backup camera:
- Drivers lose critical rear visibility
- The risk of hitting:
- Pedestrians
- Children
- Objects behind the vehicle
- The chance of a backing collision increases significantly
This is exactly why backup cameras are required under federal safety standards.
How Toyota Discovered the Issue
Toyota began investigating after receiving real-world reports:
- March 2025: Initial field reports and bench testing
- August–October 2025: Identified voltage drop conditions
- January 2026: Determined USB charger design as the root cause
- March 11, 2026: Officially confirmed the defect and safety risk
The issue was found to occur intermittently, making it harder to detect during normal use.
Recall Fix: What Will Be Done?
Toyota dealers will fix the issue free of charge by:
- Updating the rearview camera software
- Or replacing the rearview camera if necessary

What You Should Do
If you own one of the affected Lexus models:
- Watch for your recall notice in the mail
- Schedule the repair as soon as possible
Even if you have not experienced the issue yet, it can happen without warning.
Know Your Rights
If your vehicle has repeated issues with safety systems like a backup camera—even after repairs—you may have rights under consumer protection laws.
This type of defect can fall under lemon law claims, especially if:
- The issue persists after multiple repair attempts
- The defect substantially affects safety or usability
Modern vehicles rely heavily on electronic systems for safety. When something as essential as a backup camera fails, it is more than a glitch—it is a serious hazard.
If you drive a Lexus NX, RX, or TX from the affected years, take this recall seriously and get it fixed promptly.
