Kia America, Inc. (Kia) is reaching out to owners of certain 2018-2021 Stinger vehicles due to a potential issue involving the fuel control valve plunger within the high-pressure fuel pump. This problem can lead to over-pressurization, resulting in a loss of drive power. Kia identified this concern in May 2023 when analyzing field data, which revealed an uptick in replacement claims for the high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) within these specific Stinger models.
To investigate further, Kia HQ conducted tests to replicate the loss of motive power experienced during highway driving. Their findings confirmed that a loss of power can occur when there's excessive rich combustion due to the engine management logic responding to HPFP over-pressurization.
The defect report points to a misalignment issue with the fuel control valve plunger in the high-pressure fuel pump, leading to uneven wear. Over time, this wear can cause the plunger to remain stuck in an open position, resulting in over-pressurization and potential loss of motive power at highway speeds.
Kia has identified 80 unique Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINS) associated with reports of this issue, including two customer complaints, six technical assistance cases, and 77 warranty claims. Owners of affected vehicles will be asked to return to their dealerships for an inspection of the engine control unit and replacement with an improved high-pressure fuel pump fuel control valve featuring enhanced plunger assembly materials. Additionally, dealers will update the engine control unit's software logic to prevent a loss of motive power in case of the defect occurring. To reference this recall, use Kia's number SC281, and the NHTSA campaign number is 23V-634.
If you suspect that your vehicle might be affected by this issue and are concerned about its performance, it's essential to contact your local Kia dealership promptly. Additionally, familiarize yourself with the lemon law, which may provide recourse if your vehicle repeatedly experiences significant defects or issues. The lemon law varies by state, but it generally enables you to seek a refund, replacement, or compensation if your vehicle meets the criteria for a lemon. Consulting with an attorney experienced in lemon law cases can help you understand your rights and options in such situations.
