Honda Recalls Certain Passport and Pilot Vehicles For Fuel Leak Risk

In a recent development, Honda has announced a safety recall for certain models of its popular SUVs, the 2023-2024 Honda Passport and 2023-2025 Honda Pilot vehicles. The recall is necessary due to a potential defect in the fuel filler neck tube and fuel filler pipe connection that could cause these components to separate during a crash, leading to fuel leaks.

According to Honda's investigation, which was triggered by the first warranty claim of this issue, six additional vehicles were found in their warehouse inventory with incomplete fuel filler neck tube-to-fuel filler pipe connections. The investigation revealed that an out-of-sequence process during installation of the fuel pipe assembly may have contributed to this defect. As a result, some vehicles may have an incomplete connection between these components.

In the event of a crash, if the fuel filler neck tube and fuel filler pipe are not properly connected, they can separate, allowing fuel to leak from the vehicle's tank. This poses a significant risk, as in the presence of an ignition source, such as a spark or open flame, fuel leaks can ignite, resulting in a fire or explosion.

The risk of injury or property damage is also increased due to the potential for fuel to spill onto hot engine components or other sensitive areas. Honda has deemed this defect a serious safety concern and has decided to conduct a recall to address it.

To address this issue, dealerships will inspect and repair the fuel filler neck tube and pipe as necessary. The repair process is expected to involve removing the affected components, cleaning and replacing them with new ones, or repairing any damage that may have occurred due to the leak.

Honda has announced that owner notification letters will be mailed on January 6, 2025, to inform owners of this recall. Vehicle owners who receive these letters should contact a Honda dealership for instructions on how to have their vehicle repaired.
