Chevy Silverado & GMC Sierra Fuel Tank Problem

General Motors has decided that a defect affecting vehicle safety exists in certain 2011-2015 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 and 2011-2015 GMC Sierra 3500 trucks equipped with gas engines and dual fuel tanks. According to the defect report, the fuel level sensor in the front tank could become stuck in a low level position, allowing the rear tank to overfill and expand. The expanded tank could contact the drive shaft, creating a fuel leak that could result in a vehicle fire. Drivers will be alerted of a problem through a front fuel gauge that always registers “low” or through a grinding or knocking noise as the fuel tank contacts the moving drive shaft.

Dealers will replace the rear tank fuel pump, update the fuel-level sensor software and replace any front fuel tanks that may have become bulged. Interim notices will be mailed out in December. Owners will receive a second notice in February 2018 when the remedy is expected to be available.
