A safety concern affecting certain 2022-2023 Ford Bronco vehicles has come to light, involving a 360-degree rear view camera that may not display an image when the vehicle is placed in reverse. The issue stems from fretting corrosion and internal connector misalignment within the camera, leading to degraded circuit continuity and a loss of video frames.
The problem first surfaced on May 5, 2023, when Ford's Field Review Committee (FRC) approved Field Service Action (FSA) 23S23 for Explorer, Aviator, and Corsair rear view camera issues. At the time, the root cause was unknown, and a remedy had not been defined. Following this approval, Ford launched several work streams to investigate the concern.
Over the next few weeks, Ford and its suppliers conducted a thorough analysis of the internal camera connector, reviewed software, and developed testing to replicate the condition. By May 2023, they were able to reproduce the issue in both vehicle and component-level tests. Key life testing and Highly Accelerated Life Test (HALT) testing were also developed to simulate camera concerns in a laboratory environment.
In July 2023, Ford determined that camera hardware contributed to the problem and began validating a hardware remedy. A cross-functional review was initiated to investigate other applications sharing this rear view camera design, including Navigator, Bronco, and Transit vehicles with 360-view features.
On July 25, 2023, Ford's Critical Concern Review Group (CCRG) opened an investigation into the affected vehicle lines, which were not previously included in FSA 23S23 or other rear view camera recalls. The CCRG identified elevated warranty rates and similar projected rates for this condition on several vehicle lines, including the Navigator, Aviator, 2021 Model Year Bronco, and Transit.
On August 18, 2023, Ford's Field Review Committee approved Field Action 23S48 for the affected vehicle lines. Although the 2022-2023 Model Year Bronco had a statistically significant lower warranty rate at the time, Ford continued to monitor its field performance and conduct hardware analysis and testing.
In April 2025, the Technical Review Group (TRG) reviewed warranty claim rates for 2022-2023 Model Year Bronco vehicles and identified an increasing trend, with elevated rates peaking at 10R/1000. The projected failure rate is approximately 5% at 120 months-in-service. On April 16, 2025, Ford's Field Review Committee approved a field action on the 2022-2023 Model Year Bronco vehicles.
Dealers will replace the rear view camera to resolve the issue. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on May 5, 2025. Ford's number for this recall is 23S48, and the NHTSA campaign number is 25V-273. This recall expands previous recall number 23V-598. Fortunately, Ford is not aware of any injuries related to this concern, although there are two allegations of minor crashes due to the loss of rear view image.
