Fire Risk: Porsche Panamera, Cayenne, and Lamborghini Urus Models Affected by Fuel Pump Defect
Porsche and Lamborghini have both announced major safety recalls involving certain 2024–2026 Porsche Panamera, Cayenne, 2025 Porsche Panamera E-Hybrid, and 2025 Lamborghini Urus vehicles. At the center of the issue is a manufacturing defect with the high-pressure fuel pump, which may not have been properly tightened during assembly. This defect can lead to a fuel leak under extremely high pressure, creating a dangerous vehicle fire risk.
What’s the Defect?
The defect was traced back to an assembly line error. A scanner malfunction prevented the initial tightening of the high-pressure fuel pump to the cylinder head. Subsequent manual rework did not meet manufacturer specifications, leaving the pump improperly secured. As a result, the connection between the pump and fuel lines may not seal correctly, causing fuel to escape at pressures of up to 350 bar.
Safety Risks
A faulty fuel pump connection can result in sudden and substantial fuel leaks, which significantly increase the risk of fire. While some drivers may notice a fuel odor or an illuminated Check Engine Light (MIL), these warnings are not guaranteed. In some cases, the defect may remain undetected until a fire hazard occurs.
Reported Cases
In early September 2025, field cases from other brands using engines produced on the same line revealed the seriousness of this defect:
- One vehicle experienced a fire following a fuel leak, accompanied by a MIL warning and fuel odor. No injuries were reported.
- A second vehicle displayed similar symptoms and was later found to have 16 liters of fuel in the oil sump, though no fire occurred.
After investigation, Porsche AG confirmed a safety defect on September 17, 2025. Lamborghini also confirmed the issue in affected Urus models.
Affected Models:
- Porsche
- 2024–2026 Porsche Panamera
- 2025 Porsche Panamera E-Hybrid
- 2024–2026 Porsche Cayenne
- Lamborghini
- 2025 Lamborghini Urus
Remedies:
- Dealers will inspect and properly tighten the high-pressure fuel pump fasteners.
- If necessary, the fuel pump and fuel lines will be replaced free of charge.
Owner Notifications:
- Porsche: Interim letters will be mailed November 21, 2025, with follow-ups once final parts are available.
- Lamborghini: Notification schedules will be released soon, with repairs covered at no cost to owners.
Recall Reference Numbers:
- Porsche Recall Number: ASA9 | NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V-634
- Lamborghini Recall Number: L636-R.01.25 | NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V-633
What Owners Should Do
Owners of affected Porsche and Lamborghini vehicles should take this recall seriously. Because the defect may not present immediate or obvious symptoms, it’s crucial to schedule an inspection as soon as recall notices are received. Until then, owners should monitor for fuel odors, watch for a check engine light, and consider parking away from structures as a precaution.
This joint recall underscores the critical importance of proper fuel system assembly. With the potential for high-pressure leaks and fires, Porsche and Lamborghini are urging owners to take swift action once contacted.
