2023 Dodge Charger and Dodge Challenger Seat Back Safety Concerns

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) will be contacting the owners of certain 2023 Dodge Charger and 2023 Dodge Challenger vehicles due to a potential safety issue with the left rear seat back. This issue, which may result in noncompliance with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) for Seating Systems, could compromise the safety of passengers.

The Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance (TSRC) organization at FCA first became aware of the issue in July and August 2023. During this period, they received notifications about a potential problem with the left rear seat back in some Dodge Charger and Challenger vehicles. Initial reports indicated that the seat back did not latch properly, prompting an in-depth analysis by the TSRC.

The investigation conducted by TSRC revealed a pattern of seat back latching failures and identified specific vehicle histories that correlated with this issue. It was determined that the affected vehicles were built with seat backs that could not latch properly. By July 2, 2024, the TSRC had recognized that a vehicle build issue was causing the left rear seat back to remain unlatched, which could potentially result in noncompliance with FMVSS No. 207.

On July 25, 2024, the FCA US Vehicle Regulations Committee concluded that a voluntary safety recall was necessary. The decision was made after confirming that the issue stemmed from an assembly problem rather than a defect in the seat back parts themselves. Specifically, the problem was traced to a misalignment of the left rear seat back striker during the vehicle assembly process.

The recall affects a specific batch of 2023 Dodge Charger and 2023 Dodge Challenger vehicles. Owners of the affected vehicles will be notified and instructed to bring their cars to authorized dealers for inspection. If the left rear seat back striker is found to be misaligned, it will be adjusted to ensure proper latching.

FCA US LLC has assigned the recall numbers 37B and 38B to this issue. The corresponding campaign numbers from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are 24V-573 and 24V-574.
