A recent safety concern has been identified in certain 2023-2024 model year Cadillac Lyriq vehicles, where drivers may experience a blank driver video display while driving. This issue, which can be a significant distraction and potentially impact road safety, has prompted General Motors (GM) to initiate a safety recall to address the problem.
The issue first came to light on February 28, 2025, when the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched an inquiry into customer complaints regarding driver video display malfunctions in certain Cadillac Lyriq vehicles. In response, GM opened a product investigation on March 4, 2025, which involved reviewing field data to identify the root cause of the problem.
GM's investigation revealed that a total of 1,209 unique vehicle identification numbers (VINs) were associated with potentially relevant field incidents in 2023-2025 model year Cadillac Lyriq vehicles. Notably, the vast majority of these incidents occurred in 2023-2024 model year vehicles equipped with video display control modules that had not been updated to the current software version.
The company's review of the data showed that the blank driver video display issue was first reported on August 23, 2022, and continued until April 3, 2025. Fortunately, GM is not aware of any accidents or injuries associated with this condition, highlighting the importance of proactive measures to address safety concerns before they result in harm. On May 22, 2025, GM's Safety Field Action Decision Authority (SFADA) determined that a safety recall was necessary to correct the problem. The company will update the vehicles' video display control module software to prevent the blank driver video display issue from occurring.
To facilitate the repair process, GM will offer two options for owners of affected vehicles. For vehicles equipped with wireless over-the-air (OTA) technology, owners who have accepted applicable terms and conditions can receive the software updates remotely, without needing to visit a dealership. Alternatively, all owners may schedule an appointment with a GM dealer to have the updates performed in person.
Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on July 14, 2025, informing affected vehicle owners of the safety recall and providing instructions on how to proceed with the repair. The recall is identified by GM's number N252500680 and the NHTSA campaign number 25V-356.
This safety recall highlights the importance of ongoing monitoring and improvement in the automotive industry. By identifying and addressing potential safety concerns, manufacturers like GM can help prevent accidents and ensure that their vehicles meet the highest standards of safety and quality.
As the automotive industry continues to evolve, with increasing reliance on advanced technologies like video display systems, it is essential for manufacturers to remain vigilant in identifying and addressing potential safety concerns.
