Audi Rearview Camera Failure
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Audi) has announced a noncompliance affecting certain Audi vehicles from model years 2019 through 2026. The issue involves a software error that may prevent the rearview camera image from displaying as intended. Because rearview cameras are required safety equipment, affected vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 111, “Rear Visibility.”

What Is the Problem?
In certain situations, a software issue may prevent the rearview camera image from displaying on the in-vehicle screen when the driver shifts into reverse. This is considered a noncompliance with FMVSS No. 111 because the standard requires a functional rear visibility image while backing up.
Safety Risk
If the rearview camera image does not display, the driver’s visibility while reversing is reduced. This can increase the risk of a crash, including striking pedestrians, cyclists, other vehicles, or property.
What Causes It?
Audi reports that the exact root cause could not be definitively identified due to the issue occurring sporadically. However, analysis suggests that electrical noise, diminished shielding integrity, and timing-related factors may adversely affect rearview camera operation. Testing also suggested that variations at coaxial cable crimp connections could increase shielding resistance and reduce protection from electromagnetic interference, which may contribute to camera failures.
What Warning Signs Might Occur?
If this issue happens, the driver will notice that the rearview camera image is not displayed. Audi advises owners who experience the issue to use extra caution when reversing and to contact an authorized Audi dealer without delay for diagnosis.
Timeline of Events
- December 2023: Audi initiated an investigation after field claims were received.
- January 2024 – September 2024: Reproduction attempts and component/vehicle analyses were conducted, but the sporadic nature prevented a definitive root cause.
- October 2024 – September 2025: Ongoing testing identified corrupted register entries in one camera (November 2024). Further testing suggested electrical noise could corrupt camera data and sporadically affect one or more cameras in the Top View system during a driving cycle. The issue typically resolves after a vehicle restart/bus sleep.
- October – December 2025: Audi discussed the issue with NHTSA ODI (Oct 8, 2025 and Dec 12, 2025). Measurements indicated increased shielding resistance in some coaxial cables, potentially linked to crimp variations and reduced EMI protection.
- December 15, 2025: The Audi Product Safety Committee determined the issue constitutes a noncompliance and decided to conduct a noncompliance recall.
How Will Audi Fix It?
Dealers will install an updated software solution. Audi states the updated software includes a “self-healing” process that can recover camera function during the driving cycle if corrupted data is detected. This process typically happens quickly and in the background, and may not be noticeable unless the Top View system is active on the MMI.

Could This Be a Lemon Law Case?
This defect involves a federally required safety system. If your Audi has repeated rearview camera failures, requires multiple repair visits, remains out of service for extended periods, or continues malfunctioning after the software update, you may have rights under your state’s lemon law. Keep copies of all repair orders and contact a qualified lemon law attorney to discuss your options.
