WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH, THE POWER STEERING SUDDENLY FAILED AND SMOKE BEGAN TO RISE FROM UNDER THE HOOD. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER, BUT THE CONTACT HAS NOT HEARD FROM THEM TO KNOW THE CONDITION OF HIS VEHICLE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 1,200. PHONE INTERVIEW UPDATE (OCTOBER 3): DROVE FOR 20 MILES, STEERING THEN ACTED ABNORMAL. WHILE PARKING, MY WIFE NOTICED SMOKE FROM UNDER THE HOOD. THEN THE VEHICLE CAUGHT FIRE UNDER THE DRIVER SIDE OF THE HOOD NEAR THE FRONT. THERE WAS A TRAIL OF FLUID ON THE GROUND. THE COMPLAINANT BELIEVES THAT POWER STEERING FLUID LEAKED AND IGNITED. NO AFTER-MARKET ITEMS WERE INSTALLED IN VEHICLE. NO ACCESSORIES WERE USED AT THE TIME OF FIRE. A CHRYSLER REPRESENTATIVE TOOK A REPORT OVER THE PHONE AND CHRYSLER PAID ME FOR THE VEHICLE. I PULLED INTO THE PARKING OF 2155 SUITE B ELECTRIC RD, ROANOKE, VA 24018. AS I GOT OUT OF THE CAR WITH MY 2YR OLD DAUGHTER THE CAR CAUGHT ON FIRE UNDERNEATH THE HOOD. IT CAUSED $5,000 OF DAMAGE TO THE BUILDING AS WELL AS DAMAGED THE CAR COMPLETELY(WE HAVE MANY PICTURES). THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED AT THE SCENE WITHIN TWO MINUTES AND WAS ABLE TO PREVENT FURTHER DAMAGE TO THE BUILDING. OUR INSURANCE PRECEDED WITH AN INVESTIGATION AND FOUND THAT THE FIRE STARTED AROUND THE STEERING FLUID OR THE ANTI-FREEZE. THEIR FINDINGS CONCLUDED EVEN THOUGH IT WAS BURNED TO THE GROUND THAT IT WAS THE STEERING FLUID. CHRYSLER HAD THEIR OWN FORENSICS COME OUT AND ALL THEY DID WAS TAKE PICTURES AND REPORT BACK TO THEIR HEADQUARTERS. WITHIN A WEEK AND A HALF WE WERE INFORMED BY A LETTER THAT IT WAS NOT A MANUFACTURED DEFAULT. BUT WOULD NOT LET US KNOW WHAT "CAUSED" IT. IT WAS A BRAND NEW CHRYSLER WITH ONLY 6,700 MILES ON IT. WE BOUGHT IT BRAND NEW. IF YOU COULD PLEASE HELP US WITH ANY INFORMATION YOU HAVE WE WOULD TRULY APPRECIATE IT. WE HAVE NO CAR AND CHRYSLER DOES NOT WANT TO HELP US BUT IT WOULD BE HELPFUL TO KNOW WHAT "CAUSED" IT. IF IT ISN'T THE STEERING FLUID LEAK THAN WHAT CAUSED A BRAND NEW CAR TO CATCH FIRE AND GO UP IN FLAMES? HAD MIDAS LOOK AT IT LAST WEEK WHILE REPLACING FRONT BRAKES, BUT THEY SAID THEY DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING. THIS WEEK, WAS GETTING OIL CHANGE AND TRANSMISSION FLUSHED. MENTIONED THE NOISE AGAIN, AND THIS TIME WAS TOLD THE NOISE WAS DUE TO ENGINE MOUNT FAILURE OF THE LEFT AND RIGHT ENGINE MOUNTS. I IN TURN CALLED MY LOCAL CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP SINCE I PURCHASED MY CAR WITH THE LIFETIME POWER TRAIN WARRANTY AS WELL AS AN EXTENDED WARRANTY, AND WAS TOLD THAT NEITHER ONE OF THESE WOULD COVER THE REPLACEMENT. THEN, CHRYSLER PROCEEDED TO QUOTE ME A REPLACEMENT COST THAT WAS $300 OVER MY MIDAS QUOTE. I ASKED THE TECHNICIAN, "DOESN'T THIS SEEM TO BE A PREMATURE FAILURE, SINCE I ONLY HAVE 67,000 MILES?" TO WHICH HE REPLIED, "YES IT DOES." HE ALSO SAID THE REASON THIS PART IS NOT COVERED IS BECAUSE IT IS CONSIDERED A "CONSUMABLE" PART. REALLY? CAN I BUY THAT WITH MY OIL? BUT, BASED ON ALL OF THE COMPLAINTS I HAVE SEEN ABOUT THIS ON NUMEROUS WEBSITES, ENGINE MOUNTS ARE AS CONSUMABLE AS BRAKE PADS WHERE CHRYSLER IS CONCERNED. NEEDLESS TO SAY, I TOLD THE TECHNICIAN THAT I WOULD NOT BE TAKING MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR THIS REPAIR. I CAME HOME AND DECIDED TO GOOGLE THIS PROBLEM TO SEE IF IT WAS A COMMON OCCURRENCE, AND OH MY! CHRYSLER NEEDS TO RECALL THE ENGINE MOUNTS AND REFUND THEIR CUSTOMERS WHO HAVE HAD TO PAY FOR THESE REPAIRS SINCE NONE OF THEIR WARRANTIES SEEM TO! TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR PRODUCT. BEFORE I TAKE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND PAY LOTS OF MONEY I DON'T HAVE I NEED TO KNOW WHAT MY OPTIONS ARE AND WHY IT APPEARS THIS HAS BEEN AN ISSUE AND NOT RESOLVED. IF YOU PUT IN GOOGLE 2007 PACIFICA AWD STALLING WHILE DRIVING YOU GET MORE THAN ENOUGH RESPONSES AND IT LED ME TO HERE EVEN. THIS HAS OCCURRED SIX TIMES SINCE FEBRUARY 1, 2014 (A PERIOD OF ABOUT SEVEN WEEKS). EACH TIME I HAVE BEEN LUCKY ENOUGH TO GUIDE THE VEHICLE OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, IN SPITE OF THE LOSS OF STEERING AND BRAKING. THE VEHICLE RESTARTED WITH NO MAJOR PROBLEM EACH TIME. ALSO, THE ENGINE SPONTANEOUSLY REVVED AS THE VEHICLE LOST FORWARD MOMENTUM ON ONE OCCASION (ON A DATE PRECEDING THE FIFTH SHUTOFF EVENT), BUT REGAINED NORMAL OPERATION WITHIN SECONDS. ON THAT OCCASION I TOOK THE VEHICLE IMMEDIATELY TO THE DEALER FOR ANALYSIS; THEY UPDATED A COMPUTER MODULE. THE SHUTOFF HAS OCCURRED TWICE SINCE THE DEALER FIXED THE COMPUTER COMPONENT. ALL EVENTS OCCURRED WITHIN TWO TO FIVE MINUTES OF DRIVING THE CAR AFTER IT HAD BEEN SITTING FOR SEVERAL HOURS (COLD START?). MY RESEARCH SHOWS THAT THIS IS A FREQUENTLY REPORTED PROBLEM WITH THE 2007 PACIFICA, AND THAT THE VEHICLE WAS RECALLED FOR THE PROBLEM IN MODEL YEARS 2004 - 2006. I PROVIDED A PRINTOUT OF MY RESEARCH TO THE DEALER, AND THEY HAVE HAD THE VEHICLE FOR FIVE BUSINESS DAYS WITHOUT BEING ABLE TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM. STEERING

tl*the contact owns a 2007 chrysler pacifica awd. while driving approximately 5 mph, the power steering suddenly failed and smoke began to rise from under the hood. a police report was filed. the vehicle was towed to the dealer, but the contact has not heard from them to know the condition of his vehicle. the current and failure mileages were 1,200. phone interview update (october 3): drove for 20 miles, steering then acted abnormal. while parking, my wife noticed smoke from under the hood. then the vehicle caught fire under the driver side of the hood near the front. there was a trail of fluid on the ground. the complainant believes that power steering fluid leaked and ignited. no after-market items were installed in vehicle. no accessories were used at the time of fire. a chrysler representative took a report over the phone and chrysler paid me for the vehicle.

i have chrysler pacifica that has a bad transmission problem when shifting and sometimes the rear brakes will lock up. i took it to a dealership for repairs and was told to bring it in only when you get lights on the dash other than that it is normal. i'm currently waiting for a tuning valve to be replaced in the motor. i'm now experiencing problems now with the airbag light coming on and going off. i was told again by a service writer it was normal until it comes on and stays on. i bought the car in january 2008 and it is now march it has been in the shop for repairs 4 times for the transmission and twice for the brakes and a total of 15 days and running. i have called chrysler care several times and have sent them a letter and their response to me is keep taking it back for repairs the car has 34,000 on it now and still has factory warranty left on it. i'm afraid to drive it and have it sitting in the driveway because the dealer is waiting for the parts to come in to repair it. please if there is someone at chrysler listening call me...

vehicle purchased new 04/2007 has had the torque converter replaced twice and still has the same problem. the transmission shifts harshly, cause a rumbling / shuddering sensation at certain speed / load conditions. the transmission also intermittently remains in a "lock up" condition while stopping and will nearly stall the engine before the car is stopped using much harder than normal brake pressure.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

on april 15th 2008 at approximately 8:45am i was driving our brand new chrysler pacifica limited addition. i pulled into the parking of 2155 suite b electric rd, roanoke, va 24018. as i got out of the car with my 2yr old daughter the car caught on fire underneath the hood. it caused $5,000 of damage to the building as well as damaged the car completely(we have many pictures). the fire department arrived at the scene within two minutes and was able to prevent further damage to the building. our insurance preceded with an investigation and found that the fire started around the steering fluid or the anti-freeze. their findings concluded even though it was burned to the ground that it was the steering fluid. chrysler had their own forensics come out and all they did was take pictures and report back to their headquarters. within a week and a half we were informed by a letter that it was not a manufactured default. but would not let us know what "caused" it. it was a brand new chrysler with only 6,700 miles on it. we bought it brand new. if you could please help us with any information you have we would truly appreciate it. we have no car and chrysler does not want to help us but it would be helpful to know what "caused" it. if it isn't the steering fluid leak than what caused a brand new car to catch fire and go up in flames? sincerely, mary-kathryn bailey

recurring starting issue when high humidity and heavy morning condensation are present, vehicle will not start, and power is lost to passenger side (windows, mirror, locks) and both front seats lose power. have taken to dealership 4 times in 2 months over summer, some parts replaced, but problem still occurring afterwards, other times the vehicle would start by the time it was towed to dealership. dealership not able to recreate problem, but mechanics agree that it is condensation related to causing a short somewhere. when condensation evaporates, vehicle will start just fine.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE

my wife hit a pothole in the street with our 2007 chrysler pacifica. the car was drivable after the incident, but her and my granddaughter smelled gasoline. they proceeded toward home and noticed the gas gauge was going down very quickly. they got home with the gas gauge reading empty, they had traveled about 3 to 4 miles and lost 3/4 of a tank of gas. i looked under the car and saw a gash in the bottom front of the plastic gas tank about 2" long. this was disturbing to me because the front corner of the tank has no protection.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

my chrysler pacifica 2007 awd with a 4.0 engine uses excessive oil. i did not know this. due to the car using oil-no leaking, i nearly blew my engine. my oil light came on too late with only about 1 qt of oil remaining. since i bought the car a year old and it is past 36000 miles, i am stuck with repairs due to a faulty engine. the car is at the mechanic who said it has metal in the oil from the ordeal and may need the whole engine replaced or rebuilt. this may cost 1/2 what the car is worth and i still owe payments for 4 more years. i have checked online forums and this is a common problem with the awd models, especially built in canada like mine. chrysler needs to be held responsible for these repairs. this is $40k vehicle. at the very least the engine should last more than 5 years. my car is only 3 years old and i'm stuck with bills i can't afford or paying payments on a car i can't drive.

my 2007 chrysler pacifica stalls while driving. we have only owned it for 9 months but in that time we have had five stalling issues. our local dealership has tried cleaning various parts of the transmission, but it continues to stall. i noticed that 2003 to 2006 pacifica's were recalled for a similar issue.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

have been experiencing a clunk from the right wheel well for a few weeks. had midas look at it last week while replacing front brakes, but they said they didn't see anything. this week, was getting oil change and transmission flushed. mentioned the noise again, and this time was told the noise was due to engine mount failure of the left and right engine mounts. i in turn called my local chrysler dealership since i purchased my car with the lifetime power train warranty as well as an extended warranty, and was told that neither one of these would cover the replacement. then, chrysler proceeded to quote me a replacement cost that was $300 over my midas quote. i asked the technician, "doesn't this seem to be a premature failure, since i only have 67,000 miles?" to which he replied, "yes it does." he also said the reason this part is not covered is because it is considered a "consumable" part. really? can i buy that with my oil? but, based on all of the complaints i have seen about this on numerous websites, engine mounts are as consumable as brake pads where chrysler is concerned. needless to say, i told the technician that i would not be taking my car to the dealership for this repair. i came home and decided to google this problem to see if it was a common occurrence, and oh my! chrysler needs to recall the engine mounts and refund their customers who have had to pay for these repairs since none of their warranties seem to! take responsibility for your product. this was a $36,000 car!

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE

beginning in july 2011 the gas gauge became erratic. it would show 1/2 tank and 200miles to empty. within 20 miles it would show low fuel and shortly after run out of gas. around the same time the fuel tank would take a very long time to fill. the nozzle keeps kicking off as if the tank were full. the only way to fuel it is to gently squeeze the nozzle and trickle it in. the fastest it will take fuel is slow enough that you can actually count the pennies on the pump as they go up. after e-mailing chrysler no less than 7 times and finally demanding to speak to a supervisor i received a phone call today,12/29/2011. i had him on the phone for 40 minutes and got nowhere. the last e-mail they sent me said the answer would remain the same, which tells me there was a predetermined answer to my problem. i asked the supervisor who called me for a phone number i could call to speak to someone higher than him and was told "we don't do that." i cannot see how a car that is 5 years old needs a new fuel pump and a new fuel tank. he said this is the first case he has seen on this issue but i have found nearly 100 cases identical to mine on-line. i also called 7 dealers in 5 states and they have all heard of this problem and knew just what the car needs. parts and labor comes to just over $1500.00. i would greatly appreciate any help or advice you could provide. thank you. *kb

the vehicle shuts off while driving. this has occurred six times since february 1, 2014 (a period of about seven weeks). each time i have been lucky enough to guide the vehicle off to the side of the road, in spite of the loss of steering and braking. the vehicle restarted with no major problem each time. also, the engine spontaneously revved as the vehicle lost forward momentum on one occasion (on a date preceding the fifth shutoff event), but regained normal operation within seconds. on that occasion i took the vehicle immediately to the dealer for analysis; they updated a computer module. the shutoff has occurred twice since the dealer fixed the computer component. all events occurred within two to five minutes of driving the car after it had been sitting for several hours (cold start?). my research shows that this is a frequently reported problem with the 2007 pacifica, and that the vehicle was recalled for the problem in model years 2004 - 2006. i provided a printout of my research to the dealer, and they have had the vehicle for five business days without being able to reproduce the problem. i reported the problem by phone to chrysler, but their complaint line does not offer solutions (and apparently does not provide feedback).
