problem with brakes on 2006 volvo s40 t5. severe screaching noise comes from brakes when in reverse. volvo is aware of the problem yet they have not been able to resolve the issue. my volvo s40 has had brake parts replaced 4 times. each time i was told the problem was fixed. one month later, the noise is back. the noise is now back for the fifth (5) time.

i experienced a tire sidewall blowout on a michelin energy mxv4 plus v rated tire size 205 55 16 with 9000 miles at approximately 70 mph. this caused car to become extremely hard to control swerving across several lanes of traffic, and then spinning off the highway, ending up next to a canal facing traffic. i was extremely fortunate not to hit another vehicle or end up in the canal. the blowout damaged the factory rims. i have not yet determined if there was additional damage to the under carriage tire dealer determined blowout was a result of manufacturing defect and replaced tire pro-rata , but michelin refused to process claim for damages to vehicle or do anything else concerning the remaining tires that the 2006 volvo s40 came equipped with and may have the same defect. *ak

1. severe summer thunderstorms and rain. 2. drove approximately 1 mile and right blinker stayed solid green after turning. drove about a mile further onto highway entrance ramp and car indicator lights flashed abs brake failure and air bag failure, then all car instruments (gas gauge, speedometer, tachometer, etc) failed for about five minutes. instruments came back on but abs brake and air bag failure continued to flash for about 1 more minute. drove directly to dealership. 3. service department took the car right in and applied grease to the harness connector which should alleviate problems as they are known to get wet and corrode. please note this is a 2006 model as i have read on the website that the 2004 model has the exact same problem. additionally, driver side door locks and power windows intermittently inoperable leading up to this failure. had a scheduled appointment to remedy this situation but brought the car in early as the car was inoperable without instruments. *jb

noticed reduced braking power and brakes squealing. took vehicle to dealership repair facility for inspection. brakes were found to be "disengaged" on the passengers side front and "partially functional" on drivers side front. no brake warning light was displayed on dash. brake pads and assembly replaced by dealership with "upgraded" parts and covered under warranty for no charge.

2006 volvo s40-2.4i and according to forums about others who have the same heater blower problems that can cause an accident, when cold weather, the heater does not defrost the front windshield or side mirrors, heater stopped working like others reported in the forum, there was an actual recall for 2004 models with the same problem. please advise.

my 1 1/2 years old volvo s40 did this twice, shortly after starting it and moving it for a couple of miles. it displayed the message "brake failure stop car safely", "anti-skid system failure", "reduced engine performance". the car could not go more than 15 mph. after parking it, i could not restart the engine and the messages kept repeating in random order. the first time that i took it to the dealer they said that they changed the computer message module (the mechanic carried a box with many plugs in it, just to show me what it looked like). but just after 500 miles, the problem re-appeared. now the car is in the repair shop, and people do not know what to do with it for two weeks.

when i signed a purchase order on 5/10/08, the odometer disclosure statement was 6225 miles. jackson volvo service at hilo did not give me the copy of odometer disclosure statement. it was delivered on 5/12/2008. then the odometer disclosure statement showed 106,225 miles. the a/c also became very polluted.

several times i took my volvo s40 to the dealership before my warranty expired on the problem with starting my car. when inserting the key in the ignition nothing worked. now the warranty is expired (59,000 miles) and no one at the volvo dealership "recalls" our many conversations! after trying to start it several times and calling a tow truck for a jump, still nothing. it displayed the message "brake failure stop car safely", "anti-skid system failure", "reduced engine performance", "power steering failure", sbs airbag failure". the car stopped, i could not restart the engine and the messages kept repeating in random order. the car will be towed to volvo and they will see what's going on! i have read this same complaint in many different volvo forums. you would thing there would be a recall on whatever this problem is. i found out that ford made this particular year!

2006 volvo s40 passenger side air bag sensor is malfunctioning. when a passenger is sitting in the passenger seat, the airbag light saying that the airbag is off is often illuminated, but not always. the dealer has told me that they have encountered this problem on several 2006, 2007, and 2008 models. they initially told me that this was normal behavior. they are now investigating since i have raised the safety concern of being in the passenger seat and not having the airbag deploy. this is the third time we have had our car in for this problem. the dealer is working with volvo to fix this problem, but it seems like there may be a number of defective sensors out there.

my 2006 volvo s40 has had numerous and intermittent electrical issues including gauges that go haywire, false airbag failure or brake failure messages, locks that don't engage or disengage and traction control that seems to stick or malfunction. on a few occasions the speedometer and rpm readout go completely dead while i'm going 70 miles per hour on the highway. these issues are intermittent but they tend to be more pertinent during the winter months, and on december 6, 2010 all these false readouts were happening one after another, followed by a "reduced power" reading and the engine briefly decelerated. volvo dealers have been unable to diagnose or fix the issues in the past and i'm hesitant to spend hundreds more only to be told that "no codes were found."

2006 volvo s40, fwd t5: my wife was driving on the interstate around midnight going approx. 75-80 mph when all of a sudden her car shut off. when i say shut off i mean the headlights, dome lights, engine....anything that was electrical completely shut off. this would include the steering wheel locking up. so imagine driving in the middle of the night at 80 mph with traffic around you and you're lights going out, steering wheel locking and having no way to control the vehicle. to me this sounds like a 80 mph invisible torpedo that could have killed a few people including my wife. i had the vehicle towed to the nearest dealership which was a ford dealership and the next morning they diagnosed it as a dead battery, which they were correct. now i'm no rocket surgeon by any means but to me this sounds like a flaw in the safety dept. somewhere. something as trivial as a dead battery would cause a catastrophic failure like that? i think it's something that needs to be brought to the attention of the manufacturer and some sort of quality control as well.

volvo s-40 main clutch return spring breaks while depressing the clutch pedal. the defective spring hits driver in the foot, potentially causing injury to driver and a major driving distraction while shifting gears.

whilst driving, the instruments on the instrument cluster dropped to zero and the warning lights started flashing. after shutting down the car, and then restarting, the fault cleared. ever since, the electric windows and door locks have worked only intermittently. volvo diagnosed the problem to the a-pillar connectors, which they said were old, and newer ones had been made. volvo will not pay for the replacement since the car's warranty has expired. after doing some research, i found out that volvo had issued a service bulletin addressing the a-pillar connectors, and i also found quite a few volvo owners that experienced the same problem.volvo knows they have defective a-pillar connectors in some of their cars, why has a recall not been issued?

driving in rain, brake failure message began flashing on dash, then airbag failure. slowed to a stop and turned off car, turned back on and drove slowly home. messages continued to flash. drove to service center and messages were no longer flashing , mechanic said it would need to be active to find problem. same scenario many times since and the problem has become worse, driving down highway and messages appear then all gauges on panel fail and go to zero, windows fail, blinkers, brake lights fail, entire instrument panel went dark. back to mechanic, he drove it same thing happened then stopped before returning to shop so could not diagnose.extremely dangerous as several times driving in rain and in high traffic areas and on freeways with high speeds and then in construction zones bumper to bumper with no brake lights or ability to use turn signals. has been out for five to thirty minutes at a time then appearing to work again before repeating the same failure problem. never any warning, it just happens suddenly. to mechanic again, codes read and printed out pages of signal failures, none active at time so unable to determine problem. check engine light has also appeared and when checked nothing active found at time other than pages of signal failures in system.

car was parked in the driveway at my house overnight. when i opened the driver's door today mid-day, i saw glass all over the front seats. the sunroof had exploded upward. the edges of the glass still remaining in the sunroof are clearly pushed up and outward, not downward into the car as it would be if something had fallen through the sunroof from the outside. other than shattered glass, there was nothing unusual (such as a branch or rock) inside the car. numerous similar incidents are posted on carcomplaints.com, including another volvo s40.

at least 5 times i have had the car in the volvo dealership. the car without warning, powers down to 50%, the windshield wipers start up, all the gauges drop to zero position and abs brake malfunction lights light up. if you pull over and stop, the car shuts down and you can not pull out the key. if i wait 15 minutes, the key can be turned off and you can restart the car. while the check engine light stays on, everything else is normal till the next time. it had done this 6 times in the last 6 months. dealer can not figure it out other them a electrical malfunction from somewhere in the computer. if it happens going up a grade or hill, the power down slows the car in which is is sometimes impossible to power up over the hill. every time we take it to the dealer, it then runs with no problem, but lasts 2 or 3 weeks before acting up again. they have changed the batter, alternator, unplugged and replugged the computer terminal. this car is unsafe and unreliable to take on long trips. do you know of a recall to get this problem fixed ?

a design flaw caused flooding within the cabin of this vehicle. the sunroof drainage system is faulty and over time leaks water into the floor pan of the car, sometimes enough where flooding occurs. my car flooded a few months back so badly up to 10 gallons of water was vacuumed out. the flooding caused damage to the electrical harness/connections under the driver's/passenger's seat. currently the check engine light is on, the passenger seat air bag is deactivated and it is unsafe to sit in the passenger seat as the air bag could malfunction at any time, all due to this flooding and the root cause being the faulty drainage system that runs from the sunroof through the dash out of the bottom of the car. there is a class action law suit, no. 2:10-cv-04407-dmc-mf, against volvo for this specific issue, i believe this issue is leading to more and more problems over time, my vehicle currently won't start and there are only $75k miles on it, i believe water damage is the root cause for all issues with the vehicle at this time, there should be a recall on all vehicles effected or compensation to keep drivers safe in this specific vehicle.
