toyota sequoia Problems

toyota sequoia 2005 Complaints

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY

extremely high idle speed from a cold start (1500-1700 rpm) leads to wheel spin and loss of control on icy/snowy surfaces. i turned sideways in my driveway this morning while backing out of my garage. rear wheels are spinning while the brakes are holding the front wheels. i have a business partner who also has a 2005 sequoia that behaves identically. he slid off his driveway into a landscape bed, suffering minor body damage. the cold start idle speed is excessive and dangerous. *ak

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE

i had owned a 2001 toyota sequoia for four years before recently trading it in for a 2005 model. i obviously love the car but there is an unfortunate flaw in the 2005 model that differs from my 2001 model. when the vehicle is started cold the idle speed is very high - about 1500+ rpm. the idle doesn't slow down appreciably until the car has warmed up - about 5 minutes depending on the weather. the problem with the high idle comes when trying to drive the car on an icy surface. i came out of my garage on an icy morning, put the car into forward, kept my foot on the brake and slowly tried to move forward. even at a snail's pace the car skidded uncontrollably into a raised flower bed by my house scraping the under panels. my 2001 sequoia never had this problem. the high idle speed makes the car uncontrollable on ice. there is simply too much torque and power even with the brake on. toyota should be required to set back the idle speed so that the car can be controlled on a slippery surface when the engine is warming up. *jb

EQUIPMENT

turning on the a/c after starting the engine from a cold start, the a/c unit makes a grinding sound while engaging. this only occurs while engine has not run for approximately 24 hrs. dealer could not duplicate the problem after several attempts.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE

car idles at a very high rpm when started. caution must be used to firmly depress the brake before selecting drive or reverse. my car will do 10 mph without touching the accelerator. it seems to take five minutes or so to idle down.

Reported in: THEODORE AL || Crash: N || VIN #: 5TDZT38A55S

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:COOLING SYSTEM:FAN

engine noise is very loud. it would seem that the sound insulation around the engine is missing, but it is not. the radiator fan is especially loud on initial acceleration. my first 5000 mile service was just completed and after my complaint, the dealer performed a recall on the fan which was supposed to reduce the noise. it is no better. during hot summer days, it is worse because the fan runs faster (or louder) to maintain proper engine temperature. (note: i traded in my 2002 sequoia with 80,000 miles and never heard the engine on that car).

Reported in: MOBIKLE AL || Crash: N || VIN #: 5TDZT38A55S

POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

when you take your foot off the gas with the speed of the car betweed 30 to 45 mph, it frequently does not coast. it actually decelerates as though it is stuck in a low gear (rpm is 1600 to 1700 with foot off the gas). it releases in 4 to 6 seconds and then you do coast (rpm now drops to 1100). dealer observed the complaint as we slowed from 45 to 30 mph before the transmission seemed to "release" and allow the car to coast. dealer has no answer.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

our 2005 toyota sequoia limited has had several problems since the day we brought it home. however, we recently had an electrical failure and it was the second such event. my wife, mother-in-law and our 2 small children(ages 3 and 1) were in the car and while moving the car just stopped. it would not accelerate, pushing the gas pedal did nothing, the check engine light was on along with the vsc lights. my wife could only let the car coast to a safe stopping point and there was a distinct burning smell at that time. had this problem happened on the freeway where they had just been moments before, i hate to think what would have happened to them. my wife called the dealer and was told to have the car towed. the car was taken to the dealer where it has been now for 3 weeks. in that three weeks we have had several different stories on what is wrong with the vehicle. we were told that the manufacturer had been called in and that no one had ever seen this problem before except on our vehicle when it happened the last time. we sent letters to the service advisor, service manager, service director and manufacturer. we feel this vehicle is unsafe and we wanted them to tell us in writing what happened, why it happened, what they did to fix it, why this vehicle has had so many other problems also, and why we should feel safe with our family in this vehicle. we were told by the manufacturer that we would have all of those answers in writing and we would receive a phone call from their customer relations manager. neither thing ever happened. in the last week, the story has changed every 24 hours. and we were even told that someone from the manufacturer came to get the old parts for further diagnosis. they are saying the car is fine and ready to take home. but we have not been provided any answers in writing, they wont tell us who made the decision that the car is fine now, they keep using terms like could not duplicate. now, we don't feel safe putting our family in this car. *jb

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE

very excessive fast idle speed in my 2005 sequoia. i too owned a previous sequoia (2000) model and there is no comparison. it can take anywhere from 4 or more minutes to warm up the engine before there is any noticeable change in its idle. in fact, i can idle out of my subdivision without hitting the accelerator. this should not be. you can also hear an increase in its idle if you turn on the vehicles heater. the engine even revs more. you no longer can get the this vehicle, start it, and let it warm up 2 or 3 minutes and put it in drive or reverse. getting in a cold vehicle after a packer's game, you must sit there and wait....and wait....and wait while all of the other parked (and cold) vehicles have left the parking lot. if you do not let the vehicle warm up a good 5 mins. you also have problems getting the vehicle to shift gears. you can be giving it gas and it is not going no where. it gives you the feeling like your transmission is slipping and/or not engaging. i have taken the vehicle back to the dealership and they tell me that this is 'normal'. i have been driving for many a year and i know that this is not normal. they also tell me that they cannot adjust its idle because of emission requirements. i did not have one problem with my previous sequoia !, and if i was shopping around for another suv now and having this major problem in my 2005, i'd be shopping elsewhere. *nm

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM:EMISSION CONTROL:CATALYTIC CONVERTOR

vehicle emits a rotten egg smell through the ventilation system whenever we step on the accelerator. sometimes the smell is so bad that it burns our eyes and nose! toyota acknowledged the problem, stating they could not do anything until a recall for the catalytic converter is issued. they further said that earlier year models (2003-2005) vehicles had the same problem! *nm

when our driveway is slippery, our 2005 toyota sequoia will not stop on a very slight incline. the front wheels lock up and the rear wheels keep pulling the vehicle until the roadway is reached. toyota claims this is normal and the vehicle needs to be in four wheel drive with the center axle lock on! i don't know what they recommend for a two wheel drive sequoia. i have a video of the vehicle in action if you would like to see it. thank you. *nm

TIRES

our 05 toyota sequoia bought new with original tires(dunlop grand trek at20). almost right away noticed the tires wearing oddly on outside of all 4 tires. we purchased toyota's service plan & took it in as suggested every 5,000 miles. my wife told a service man & was told it was expected. i took it in & they rotated the tires again. going against toyota's recommendation(every other oil change). i didn't see how rotating them sooner would stop the problem. i have noticed the traction on them failing even on dry road and this is the only form of transportation for my wife and 2 year old son. looking online i have found toyota had complaints for the same problem since 2003. there's even several ones for the same exact car as ours. others had serious problems & i am wanting to avoid an accident. these tires are unsafe and we want them replaced the outside edge on all 4 of ours have been bald over 10,000 miles. yet toyota says its ok. are they trying to push us off until the warranty is expired? oh, dunlop's web site said to go to the dealer, toyota's handbook said to go to the tire co.? i don't care who said what i bought the sequoia new from toyota with the tires they put on it & they have known about this problem for over 3 years now. someone needs to step up and take care of this before there's an accident & someone really gets hurt. i'm going to take it in for the 30,000 on 1/3/07 & attempt to resolve the issue again. however i have noticed every review states that the new tires(same ones) do the same thing. one person has already had them replaced twice. we should get safe tires that last (with normal care & wear)as long or even close to the time expected we paid for it!. if you do some on line searches you won't have to look long to see many other people with this exact problem. these tires are very unsafe and misleading. please help!bought this suv to keep my family safe. thank you. concerned husband and father. *jb

i am reporting about 2005 toyota sequoia. you are likely aware of the recall of the ball joint for the front wheels. this was official as of january/february 2007. i was informed about this when i took my car in service in november 2007, and then in december i received a postcard. anyway, my car's all four tires had uneven tread wear, with marked wearing our of the outer half to the extent it is practically smooth with no tread left. as you know the ball joint defect is a common cause for this. i have discussed this issue with toyota dealer and subsequently toyota customer service, without any help. i am concerned that this may lead to pre-mature tire wear and on road tire rupture with crash. i believe, toyota should be made responsible for reimbursing for the tire replacements. at least they should be providing a prorated cost adjustment.

i have a 2005 toyota sequoia with 36,000 miles on it. over the past month the dash board brake warning light has started coming on. i took the truck to the dealer last week, arlington toyota in jacksonville florida. the dealer diagnostics revealed a error code on the computer of c1247 stroke sensor failure. after a $100 adjustment of the brake light switch, with in a day the light came back on. the dealer¿s response was that a $2,300 ecu was required to correct the problem. i am amazed that a vehicle with 36, 00 miles and less that 4 years old could require a part that expensive. doing a little research on the internet it is clear that this is a systemic problem toyota trucks. an internet search will return pages of ¿hits¿ covering several model years of toyota trucks from hundreds of victimized owners. most of those posts detail owners being taken for thousands of dollars by toyota service departments as their technicians struggle to correct the problem by replacing multiple very expensive parts. in my mind, this is clearly something the government needs to get involved in, as quickly as possible. i do not know if there is a safety issue here. to me a sensor detecting an issue with a vehicles breaking system is not something that should be ignored and the manufacturer should be required to correct this clearly systemic problem with one of their products. richard harp

i was leasing an 2005 sequoia through southeast toyota. i purchased the vehicle 6 months ago and at the time it was certified. since i have had the vehicle i experienced the brake light going on and off. it never stayed on long enough to take it in to be checked out and would often go away after the car was turned off and then on again. recently, the check engine, vsc trac and trac off lights came on and remained lit after the car was started - the brake light would also continue to come on after driving and would not always come back on after the car was turned off and started back up again. i took my sequoia into the closest dealer and was told that i needed a skid control ecu #89541-0c070 ($2206), master cylinder pressure sensor #89637-0c020 ($477.86) and a knock sensor bank 2 #89615-06010 #17171-50030 ($741). my research has showed that i am not the only vehicle owner with this problem. the service department has confirmed with me that there is nothing wrong with my vehicle; however, because the sensors are malfunctioning, my abs and trac is not working. i have called toyota corporate. they were only willing to help me out with approx 20% of the cost. i made my first call yesterday. i called again to day and was told that i should hear back from a manager by 6pm pst tomorrow. an investigation needs to be started on this problem.

VISIBILITY:SUN ROOF ASSEMBLY

i am concerned about spontaneously shattering sunroofs. i understand this has been reported in various vehicles manufactured by diverse auto manufacturers. last week i was visiting my daughter in california. we were traveling in a 2005 toyota sequoia at 70 miles/hr when suddenly there was the sound of an explosion overhead. the vehicle seemed to lurch a bit but i am not sure whether this was from the pressure changes when the sunroof exploded or whether the driver may have turned the steering wheel slightly in response to the explosion. we exited the highway to inspect the top of the vehicle and found that the sunroof was broken in a symmetrical fashion with the central portion of it blown out. there was in retrospect only a small amount of glass in the space between the sliding roof panel and the broken sunroof which would indicate that the majority of the glass was carried away in the air. there was no evidence that anything had fallen on the vehicle. we were not going under an overpass and not close to any vehicles ahead of us. on reviewing the internet information on this problem it does seem that it is not an infrequent occurrence and probably their are many cases that go unreported. my son in law took the vehicle to toyota and they indicated that this was an acquired problem with the vehicle and would not be covered by any warranty. i believe he is going to toyota management to explore having toyota fix this problem. i write to suggest that the ntsb place an alert to the general public asking for information on thusfar unreported cases of spontaneous shattering of sunroofs. this is a potentially very dangerous occurrence that could lead to accidents, injuries and death were the event to occur in an adverse scenario. thank you for your attention.

i was driving thru my neighborhood returning home after a heavy snowfall. i had my family in the car and to have a little fun i would give my sequoia a little extra gas as i would go around a corner to get the tires to spin a little. with traction control and anti-lock brakes it was nothing significant but the kids thought it was fun. as i neared my house i accelerated one last time before i was going to turn into my driveway. unfortunately this time there was unintentional acceleration. i don't have the stock floor mats, but even so i tried using my foot to lift the gas pedal. that did not work. since i was on a deadend residential street, i obviously did not want this condition to get out of control. when you are not in that situation it is easy to say that you need to put it in neutral, but when the situation is occurring you really only have time to react. i put the sequoia into park. fortunately since it was a heavy snow, and since i was probably only going 10-15 mph the car came to a stop quickly but no one was thrust forward. i had warning lights on all over my dash. i turned the car off and restarted and the lights went off and the car seemed to function normally afterwards thankfully. i have not taken it in for the recall because the current recall for the 2005 sequoia says that it is a floor mat issue. it is not. i am so glad that you are pursuing further investigation into the real cause of this very potentially dangerous condition.

STRUCTURE:FRAME AND MEMBERS

there is excessive rusting of the undercarriage on my 2005 toyota sequoia. while the vehicle is 5 years old it has less than 38k miles. the rust is literally flaking off the frame rails, shock towers, and most other structural components. since there is no "perforation" toyota classifies the condition as normal. my concern is that in a crash, i fear that the structural stability may be compromised due to toyota's metalury decisions.

STRUCTURE

one bolt and brackets of wind deflector of 2005 toyota sequoia fell off of vehicle and other bolt was loose. bracket was hanging down. i noticed this after driving and parking. concerned that wind deflector could have flown off the vehicle into the windshield of my vehicle or another vehicle while moving. i immediately took the vehicle into toyota. i spoke to the parts and service manager and was told that i would have to replace the part at a cost to me of $55.00. this is a leased vehicle with a safety issue that should be addressed and replaced at the cost of toyota. the wind deflector came on the leased vehicle which i advised them was to be turned in by august 30, 2010.

we have a 2005 toyota sequoia and my vsc trac, vsc off and abs lights came on and stayed on when my husband was backing up from our garage we heard a grinding noise and felt the vibrating grinding. so i look it up on the manual and it tells us to take it to a dealer. but the dealership is closed so i looked online to research it and found that may people with sequoia's between the years 2003-2005 are having this problem. it definitely should be recalled. i have 5 kids and i would hate for me to experience a bad scenario while driving. there's many complaints so i don't see why it is not being recalled.

2005 toyota sequoia failure of skid control ecu and brake booster, detected by diagnostic test by dealership. dealership service personnel strongly suggested replacing at $2k cost or the vehicle would be a safety hazard (brakes could lock up at any time, which would create an extreme hazard). as the vehicle owner i had no choice but to pay the exorbitant repair cost.

TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM

i have a 05 toyota sequoia and have recently been experiencing some electrical problems. i had some routine maintenance done on my car in early august two days later my skid control light came on causing my car to slow down followed by a brake light. when my husband took it to the toyota dealer they said the tilt had to be zero calibrated. the same day after leaving the light came on again. the skid light started to come on more frequently and i got a little worried for my children's safety. i returned to the toyota dealer for them to tell me that i needed to replace the skid control system at a cost of 840 with no guarantee to fix my car. two days later i took it to them to be replaced and they were not so sure that was the real problem. they said it could be the break booster and they were going to take a further look. the next day when we called to check on my car they informed us they had the same exact problem in another vehicle that they did replace the skid system and did not fix the problem only generated different codes. they said they were going to keep my car to compare it to the other cars codes. i still am waiting to hear what is wrong with my car. i have looked online trying to find answers and this seems to be a problem with this model. i feel the manager of the toyota dealer where i live knows that this is a problem and all but telling me it was not going to fix my issue. i have three small children and we all leave for the beach in three weeks and they don't even know what is causing this malfunction. the 03 sequoia was recalled for almost the same thing. i feel that this is a safety issue and could be dangerous. i have been very careful not to full in front of anybody due to this. i full out onto a road and my car stalls. this is very dangerous to me and my family and toyota is not doing anything to fix it.... this should be recalled!!!

(neither "sunshine kids" nor "monterey" is listed on the "restraint type" box in the next page). i am a cpst as well as a firefighter and paramedic. this particular seat restrains the child with the vehicle's lap and shoulder belt, as it is a belt-positioning booster. however, this seat also has a latch system to secure the seat to the vehicle so that the seat itself does not become a projectile if not buckled into the vehicle when not in use. i have marked answers to following questions to reflect that the seat was installed with latch, but do understand how this seat is designed to be used (securing child with lap and shoulder belt), and have always used it 100% correctly. the child in question is 9 years old and 58 pounds. SUSPENSION

we bought our 2005 toyota sequoia brand new. it has excessive tread wear on the outer edge of the tires. we are going on our 3rd set of tires. the original ones were replaced at 28k and we are having to buy new ones at 66k. we have been diligent in rotating our tires and having the alignments done. in 2007 there was a recall on the lower ball joint for the front suspension. we complained to the toyota dealer at that time about the uneven wear on our tires, and could it be caused by the defective ball joint. they disagreed and said that it was from not taking care of our vehicle. we told them that we had the tires rotated at the recommended times. they said the car was fine, the test for the alignment was fine so it had to be the driver. since then i have checked out other 2005 sequoia's and noticed the same wear problem. i have also gone on different forums regarding this subject and have found the same complaint from other consumers. at what point is toyota going to do something? is a car going to have to blow out a tire and kill someone for them to do something about this defect? our tires are bald on the outer edge of the tread but still have another 25k miles in the middle. i am extremely cautious going around corners because the traction control goes into effect. i am frustrated with the response that i have received from toyota. there is something wrong with the suspension. when i spoke to a representative with toyota, i was told," that it is normal to only get 26k miles out of your tires. you can't compare your sequoia with the tahoe or explorer." i have filed a complaint with toyota in 2010 and the dealership in 2008 and i feel that it is being brushed under the rug.the amount of money we are spending on tires and alignments is frustrating. i just want my vehicle to be fixed so that the tires have an even wear pattern and last longer than 26k miles.

POWER TRAIN

our sequoia has started 'lunging' forward upon incidents of heavy braking; for instance, when we brake hard and come to a complete stop, when the pressure is relieved from the brake pedal, the vehicle lunges forward hard- it puts our heads into the headrests and feels like we have been hit from behind; this is both a safety issue and a liability issue as this can cause an accident when braking hard; it's not a throttle issue or a brake issue, but feels more so like the powertrain is slipping or jumping back into gear very hard. our sequoia has approximately 65-66,000 miles; i have also contacted toyota regarding this problem and have not yet received a response. as i review the internet, other sequoia owners have had this problem as well.

toyota sequoia 2005 - air injection control valve & pump broke. causing car to completely malfunction. according to mechanic - a blade from the air injector pump broke - dislodged into system and caused corrosion and debris to enter into system cause over $2800 worth of parts needing to be replaced. very uncommon part to replace according to mechanic. toyota dealer had the parts to replace it - causing more concern that this may be a recall item considering the dangerous situation it presents when car completely stops working because of malfunctioning parts.

toyota - there is very serious problem with the vbs, skid control, braking system with the toyota 2005 sequoia!!!!! my brakes locked up and i had no control of the car in terms of handling or braking power - lucky for me i drive like a cautious grandmother and was driving slowly stopping at a routine stop. this event happened after months and months of taking the car in. after this serious event i knew that it was not a problem not to be worried about.... toyota replaced the skid control computer - close to 1000. i was told this was a 99% fix. fastforward and the light is on again about a month later....now they claimed the master cylinder was at fault for another near thousand dollars. the repairing dealership serviceman assured me they finally got it and said he would feel very safe for me to travel out of town. i was hesitant, but did leave to go out of town....only to find myself at yet another dealership with the same brake lights coming on.....and then going off when they went in to the service stall. they still have the car as i refused to take it back and they state until the problem "recreates itself" they are at a loss to date. to me to take the chance to recreate the loss of control of the car....and the braking system is utterly nuts. in short, i will not be driving that car ever again. nor do i want any other person in that potential "death trap." if the national highway safety does not step in.....i am telling you....there will be deaths!!!!! i have no question in my mind over this issue!!!!! please contact me and recall this for the life of somebody.

i recently purchased a used 2005 toyota sequoia from a dealer. the car has about 70k miles on it and looks to be in great shape inside and out. however, upon further inspection, i discovered that the entire frame of the car is rusted out with severe rust around the joints and welds of the underframe. i have lived in ne for the past 12 years and have owned my fair share of cars and trucks and i have never seen a frame that is this rusted on a fairly new car. my previous car was a 2003 ford explorer that i used in the snow/dirt/road all year long and the frame looked brand new when it was sold. doing research online and talking to other sequoia owners, it is clear that this is a known issue and that toyota does not want to take responsibility for their lack of qc. the toyota tundra from the same years was recalled for the same exact issue and the warranty was extended and yet the sequoia owners are left with expensive trucks that can't pass inspection after 6 or less years on the road. to me, this is unacceptable and i really hope that something will be done.

when backing out of garage and applying brakes, the abs motor was heard and then the brake light came on. then the vsc trac, vsc off and abs lights came on. the brake pedal felt mushy so a visit to dealer was made. the concern was addressed with service, and they came back with : "test drove car and inspected brakes. found dtc's c1223, c1244, c1247, c1310. provided estimate for updated skid control ecu @ $905 + tax". as the customer, i declined to schedule. then during a past winter storm, backing out of driveway again, the same thing occurred. very concerned that this braking system is defected in any wet/snowy/ice weather. i have had to divert to driving my 1998 honda accord in snow instead of the sequoia. i am very concerned driving this sequoia with my kids in car and braking at anytime. i feel an updated software/logic in ecu or an updated skid control ecu is valid enough to say they have a known issue that is 'safety' related, and toyota should buck up covering this as warranty. i have contacted toyota motor sales, usa, inc. and my case is filed at their headquarter office under my name and file #[xxx]. they stated their is no customer compliance issued recall/bulletin or warranty available to cover my concern due to its age and mileage. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

ENGINE

while driving on the highway at 55 mph, my vehicle suddenly decelerated to 20 mph. after exiting, i still could not accelerate above 20 mph. i scheduled an appointment with r&h toyota in owings mills, md for friday, march 15, 2013. i received a call from the dealership informing me it was necessary to replace the secondary air injection pump, but since the part was no longer available, i would need to replace the entire valve assembly and the skid control computer, at a total cost of $4,845.02. my internet research revealed toyota is aware of the defective secondary air injection system in their vehicles and as a result issued a warranty enhancement, in response to reports of air induction pump assemblies and/or air injection switching valves issues on their 2007-2010 tundra and 2008-2010 sequoia models, up to 150,000 miles. i called toyota to question why the decision was made to not include all model years with the defective secondary air injection system and was informed it was their engineers' decision. no one at toyota could further explain this to me. my research reveals there are many models for 2005 - 2008 affected by this defect. the explanation for the exorbitant expense was because of a design change and that toyota no longer manufactures the defective part, owners of vehicles for models 2005 - 2008 would need to replace entire system. so, toyota apparently acknowledges a defect in their design and its impact on vehicle owners. i cannot afford $5,000.00 for a vehicle that is only eight (8) years old. based on my research, there is a large class of toyota customers affected by this defect. please investigate and advise.

POWER TRAIN

i am the owner of a 2005 sequoia that i purchased new from a va dealer on 31 dec 2005; it has a rather serious drive-train related problem. after coming to a 'hard' stop, several seconds later i experience a lurch or clunk that literally feels like another vehicle just bumped me from behind. i began to apply threshold braking and the problem was minimal. today, i had to abruptly apply the brakes, emergency vehicle crossing in front of me, however, when i attempted to accelerate this time the lurch was followed a loud thud that was measured with the speed of the vehicle. please urge toyota to have this issue made into a recall along with the rust issues that this truck continues to have. the rust recall was limited and stopped with the 2004 models even though it is still an on going issue with this model.

ENGINE

the vehicle has a failed air injection system that causes a reduction in the engine's power output. when the initial failure began there was a loud vacuum sound upon start up and all dash warning lights came on. over time the sound went away but engine power is still greatly reduced. this poses a very serious safety risk as the vehicle can not accelerate adequately to highway speeds or maintain speeds on an incline thus posing a risk for accidents and as a result possible injury. toyota was notified of the issue in summer 2012 but stated they would not cover or replace any components related to this as the vehicle was out of warranty. the vehicle was taken to the dealership toyota scion concord (concord, nc) and a diagnostic test was performed showing a failed air injection system. the replacement cost are approximately $3,500 and requires a service technician to break down the motor to replace the necessary components. with the cost of the system being significant this goes beyond the scope of a basic repair. 2nd generation sequioas (2008-current) also experienced failed air injection systems and toyota replaced the system in these vehicles but did not in the 1st generation although they share a similar powertrain.

ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL

problem with 2005 toyota sequoia electronic stability control. while driving the vehicle on the highway the check engine light, vsc trac light, and vsc off light came on. vehicle instantly lost power and torque converter would not lock up. vehicle lost speed in traffic very quickly and had extreme difficulty going up an incline. since the first instance it has happened about six times. disconnecting battery clears issue temporarily. many others with vehicle have had same issue and toyota has a tsb on the issue but will not recall or cover several $k cost. problem still arises after vsc computer replacement for some people. prior years had recalls for same issue, but they ignore the 2005 model year. issue could be life threatening on public roads with sudden loss of all power and stability control.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

while driving my vehicle on the highway to work, my brake warning light on the dash came on. i pulled over cut the truck off then back on, the light was gone. the next day driving home from work, it was pouring down rain and the brake warning light came on again, along with the trac and vsc warning lights. i was only driving about 25 mph since i was in the city and not on the highway yet. i pulled over cut the truck off and then back on, the lights were out, but within another mile they were back on. i avoided the highway since my brakes were having problems and it was pouring rain. the next day they were off so i drove back to work but when i was on the way home they all came back on, this time it was the afternoon and not raining so i took it to the toyota dealership. they ran the codes and said my codes were c1247 stroke sensor and c136 master press sensor - they said this was part of a skid control ecm that controlled my antilock braking system! very scary to think my brakes were not functioning properly. i was told it could be fixed for $1042.82 and may also need to replace the master cylinder at $715.85. when i looked up the problem online i found that this was very common failure with 2003-05 models and that toyota had already recalled the 2003 problem. my service tech said that he was not aware this was a common problem, although there is a service bulletin out for it. i was very scared to drive, but the tech said that my brakes still worked but that the anti lock braking system will not stop "on a dime" but will skid or slide. when i asked to speak to the service manager (all were on vacation) i spoke with the lead tech on shift, who told me alot of what i read online was junk and there was no recall on my 2005 sequoia but he gave me a number to toyota complaint department:1-800-331-4331. i have not driven my vehicle since taking it home that day.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

we have a 2005 toyota sequoia with excessive frame rust. this was assessed by toyota dealership and documented 6/19/14. there was a recall by toyota for frame rust for years 2001-2004 on both toyota sequoias and toyota tacomas were also involved. toyota recently extended recalls for rust on frames for tacomas years 2005-2012 but not sequoia models. when i placed an inquiry and complain with toyota they stated there are no recalls for 2005 and above toyota sequoias frame rust, and that our 2005 sequoia is out of warranty and replacement of frame would be at the expense of us. we do not understand why sequoias and tacomas were recalled initially with the same rust issue, and tacomas have an extension on the recall for rust but not sequoias. we purchased toyota brand with the reputation of the company and vehicles running with over 200k miles. however, with a frame deteriorating we doubt our truck will last and have serious concerns about safety with a frame decomposing as it is. toyota is aware of issues with these frames in sequoia and tacomas as evidenced by recalls. but if recall is extended on tacoma's why not on sequoias? we would appreciate help and toyota to rectify this issue. thank you.

problem: brakes disengage or as i've been told the abs system is engaging when it shouldn't. the front end of my car sounds like it dropping out and i'm hearing a very loud grinding noise. this is happened several times in the past 2 years. had brakes serviced twice in the past 2 years. replaced pads, turned rotors. changed brake fluid. had sensors checked. checked by the dealer as well as another brake shop(firestone). they couldn't find any computer codes to definitely say what the problem is. only recommended replacing a computer part. i told them i wasn't spending over $1000 on a recommendation. even carried it to firestone, since the dealer service dept was closed yesterday evening at 6:45pm when it happened again. didn't turn off the car with the "brake", "vcs" and another yellow light on and they really didn't see any codes that stood out. very frustrating and concerning with my wife and kids riding in this car!!!!
