subaru outback 2013 Complaints

POWER TRAIN

i bought a subaru outback 2.5 limited on 9/29/12. there has been intermittent clicking noises during acceleration and when taking foot off the gas pedal, usually when near or above 38 miles per hour. the clicking noises range for low to loud. my car has now been in the dealer for over 1 week. the first time i took it in they said it was due to a loose panel behind the glove compartment and they "screwed" it in place. the same noise continued to occur without improvement. i then went on ride with the service clerk and he thought he heard it when he was driving but not when he was a passenger. then i left the car with the dealership service and the service manager drove it today and denies he hears any abnormal noises. even before the service manager drove the car, he said he spoke to their corporate technician and was told it was likely just a normal cvt noise, essentially dismissing my concern. so i wasn't surprised when he denied hearing it. now the general manager is taking my car home for a test drive today. i am going to record the noise for them and their corporate and an attorney if they still deny hearing it.

STEERING

driving 55-60 mph car continually "drifted" off of center when driving, most noticeable on a straight stretch of road. constant correction and recorrection needed to keep vehicle in its own driving lane. dealer inspected vehicle and claimed there are no mechanical issues however many online complaints exist about this problem. i took a big loss but i immediately traded this brand new car in - i was terrified to drive it and consider this lack of steering control will get someone killed.

our complaint is that this 2013 outback subaru continues to drift. it does not just drift one way. you are constantly correcting to keep it in the center of the road. the first time we complained they did an alignment. that did not correct the problem. we then ask if they check the tires. they claimed there is no problem with theirs but they lowered the air pressure and that made it worse. took it back to the dealer and had them increase the air pressure. the service manager keeps telling us there is no mechanical issues. you cannot relax driving this car. i hope i never have to drive it in a snow storm because of the lack of the steering control.

when i make a hard right turn, such as pulling out into the near lane or parking, my front passenger tire comes in contact with my fender well - specifically the body molding and violently. when measuring my hub (center) to hub (center), the passenger side of the car is a full .5 inch closer than the driver side. you can also measure the distance between the front tire to fender well and see that the passenger side is closer to the back of the fender well than the driver side. i notified west houston subaru in late dec. 2012 of the problem so they checked the alignment & measured the aforementioned hub/tire/fender distances. they acknowledged a discrepancy between the driver and passenger side; said they would contact subaru of america (soa) and follow up... unfortunately i had to contact them back... then it was suggested i contact soa myself so i did on january 8, 2013. at this time soa nor the dealership is willing to address my problem however many people in the www.subaruoutback.org forum are describing the exact same problem. TIRES

after two month of using a new car model outback 2013 the left front tire had emptied at the parking lot. an invisible cut was found that it was necessary to bought a new tire. a weeks later of this event the back left tire is been emptying very frequently since. apparently the original tires of the car has invisible defects that get the tire to empty with the normal road use. this car has a frequently signal for verification and filling of the tires.

STEERING

this new vehicle has steering that tends to wander from side to side while driving on various types of roads. on urban interstate travel it is necessary to be very vigilant when driving in the lanes as the car will often head for the edge of the lane without warning. this tendency is balanced between both left and right, and does not seem to be predictable. took the vehicle to the dealer and the head mechanic drove the car. they specified that the vehicle was to manufacturer's specifications. i find that the attention that must be paid to maintain the vehicle within the roadway lanes is tiring and far exceeds any other vehicle i have driven.

eye sight system. when using cruise control the adaptive system senses the auto in front of your car and maintains a set distance. the auto that was in front of me moved into a left turn lane and slowed to turn. my cars eye sight system detected the car was still in front of mine and even though it was not, initialed a hard stop automatically. lucky for me the car behind me was alert and was also able to stop before rear ending my car. this has happened several times after with cars moving either into left or right turn lanes or merging off interstates on the exit ramp. subaru has no idea how to fix this issue. the dealership has been able to duplicate the situation. this is a very dangerous occurrence of the eye sight system that could cause an accident. there is no mention of this possibility in the eye sight manual. i disable the system now to prevent it from happening to me, but often my wife forgets. subaru needs to find a solution. i am hoping you can help.

SEATS

seat head rest is too far forward and upper seat contours backward, putting pressure on neck and affecting spine. seat needs added support (with a small upper back support and probably a lumbar support) to take pressure off the neck and get the head free from being pushed. neck should be straight. over time this will damage the spine if the headrest isn't made adjustable or support added to the seat. i'm adding support to the seat from aftermarket cushioning to get the pressure off my head/neck. would like an adjustable headrest as was included in the 2013 subaru impreza to get the headrest off the head (and the pressure off the neck, to get my neck and back straight). --- i am worried about receiving spam so didn't want to fill out some of the extra info asked for.

STEERING

this vehicle presented issues after the first 500 miles of ownership. after 1 repair attempt it is still the same. this vehicle replaced a 2012 outback which had the same issues. the problem with the steering in the 2012 and the 2013 is that both the vehicles wander all over the road. you need to keep all your attention on keeping it following the road causing extreme fatigue. it is described by me as heavy, does not return to center and in even slight turns the car suddenly pulls in the direction you are traveling which is startling like hitting black ice. taking your eyes to even the side mirrors for lane changes offers the vehicle to invite itself into oncoming traffic. this replacement 2013 i now have started presenting these symptoms after about the first 500 miles. there is a thread on the matter on the subaruoutback.org forum with over 670 replies on the matter. http://www.subaruoutback.org/forums/104-gen-4-2010-present/31638-ob-lane-wandering.html the responses on page 45 describe the problem pretty well. my responses are under [xxx]. one response #442 was "and now, at 17 months & 25k mis, we still have a 'new' car that steers like a drunk pushing a shopping cart with a bad wheel..." how sad is that? please, look into the matter because if someone didn't get hurt already someone will. all my drives are very exhausting. this is now my third subaru so i am not new to subaru and/or awd. i still offer your organization the opportunity to inspect and drive my vehicle to personally experience what i am describing. i do not want to see anyone to get hurt of lose their life. thank you information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). the consumer referenced recall # 13v194000.

SUSPENSION

vehicle suspension does not control vehicle during freeway speed driving. vehicle experiences large left-right sway motions on wavy pavement at freeway speeds and large uncontrolled vehicle motions up-down at freeway speeds. vehicle is hard to control during occurrences and needs constant steering corrections as result of large suspension motions. also due to the poorly damped suspension, braking distances are long. car does not slow down as expected, especially when vehicle is undergoing a large suspension articulation. several months ago, my vehicle was initially taken to dealership to verify problem, but, dealership mechanic said vehicle behaves w/ in spec and like other vehicles. i recently took my vehicle in for another issue, but, received a loaner vehicle identical to my vehicle. the loaner vehicle does not respond in the same manner as my vehicle. loaner vehicle exhibits well damped suspension control and negligible body motions. braking distances are much better on the loaner vehicle largely due to the well damped suspension. the loaner vehicle is significantly easier to drive than my vehicle. my vehicle is still currently at the dealership being reviewed by subaru of america's technical advisor.

SUSPENSION

vehicle does not handle well on the highway/interstate. seems to drift and wander. i have driven many vehicles and this is the first vehicle that i have owned that i have had this experience with. i purchased my first 2013 that wasn't what i wanted so they ordered the same vehicle withe everything i wanted. both of these outbacks did the very same things since day one. on a non-windy day it is if a drunk driver is driving, always having to correct the steering. on a windy day it is near impossible to stay in your own lane properly.

STEERING

car does not track straight during highway driving. car veers to one side or the other needing constant correcting. when you do make a correction it normally over corrects. this is incredibly dangerous! i thought it was just me but my husband has also had the same problem and i see many complaints on the internet. subaru must be made to fix this. this is an expensive car.

Reported in: CATONSVILLE MD || Crash: N || VIN #: 4S4BRDJC8D2

STEERING

the vehicle does not track well at highway speeds. it wanders side to side in the lane of travel requiring constant correction to stay in the center of the lane. on smooth road surfaces, the wandering is relatively mild. however, i became alarmed while crossing a bridge with a grated deck. the vehicle swerved side to side dramatically requiring significant steering correction and immediate reduction in speed to maintain the lane of travel safely. i took the car to the dealer and reported the problem. they inspected the steering, wheel alignment, wheel balance, and tires. they didn't find any problems except they recommended that we inflate the tires 5 psi above manufacturer's recommendations. the extra pressure improved the steering somewhat, but the problem persists. i have not yet driven the vehicle in challenging winter conditions such as standing water or slush on the highway. however, after my experience on the grated bridge, i am very concerned that this car would pose a safety hazard in these conditions. i feel this vehicle has a significant design or manufacturing defect that directly affects my safety.

STEERING

my 2013 subaru outback 2.5i wanders at highway speeds. constant corrections are required as it will not track in a straight line even when their are no outside influences (ex: wind). small corrections add up to over correction requiring more correction. staying in lane can be a challenge.

Reported in: QUAKERTOWN PA || Crash: N || VIN #: 4S4BRBLC0D3

STEERING

vehicle "wanders" constantly at speeds from 30 mph to 70 mph. i would imagine at higher speeds as well. constant correction is needed to keep vehicle in proper lane. when even the slightest correction is made, it over-corrects. it doesn't seem possible to not over-correct. the vehicle will wander to the right and no matter how gentle the correction, it over-corrects and wanders to the left then back to the right and so on. it is a constant challenge to stay in your own lane. a small gust of wind significantly magnifies the problem. i believe just turning your head to look out your side window to check lane traffic could result in crossing a center line. i believe that this steering problem makes this vehicle unsafe and likely will result in some serious problems if it hasn't already. it is very tiring to drive any distance. the dealer has made a couple minor attempts to make it better, but hasn't succeeded. while the dealer worked on my car i used two different "loaners". both 2013 subaru outbacks. both had the same problems.

Reported in: SILVER CREEK WA || Crash: N || VIN #: 4S4BRBKCXD3

STEERING

dangerous! the vehicle does not track well at highway speeds. it wanders side to side in the lane of travel requiring constant correction to stay in the center of the lane. on smooth road surfaces, the wandering is still very noticeable. high crosswinds experienced driving in the plains or crossing bridges with a grated decks makes the vehicle a challenge to control the wandering and staying within my lane. i took the car to the dealer and reported the problem. they inspected the steering, wheel alignment, wheel balance, and tires. they didn't find any problems. there is no technical service bulletin for this issue and the internet bulletin boards are full of complaints with the same type of issue. i personally feel the vehicles are not engineered correctly or they are leaving the factory with inadequate alignments or the alignment specifications are not correct in general. i love my vehicle until i drive faster than 45mph. safety is my #1 concern and it needs to be seriously addressed. long trips are way more fatiguing than they should be and interstate driving is scary for most of the drive. this is the link that discusses the same problems i've addressed here http://www.subaruoutback.org/forums/104-gen-4-2010-present/31638-ob-lane-wandering.html.

POWER TRAIN

transmission will not shift into a lower gear when trying to accelerate from a full stop or from a slow speed. this problem occurs within first minute or so after starting the car when engine is cold (e.g. first thing in the morning). first thing in the morning, i will begin driving the car within 10-15 seconds of first starting the engine. i drive 2 blocks where i come to a stop sign. from a full stop i must wait for a break in traffic traveling 30-35 mph. as i press on the accelerator, engine noise will increase and rpms increase as expected; but car reacts as if transmission is shifting from 1st to 4th gear directly (preventing the car from accelerating safely.) more than once, cars overtaking me from behind had to slow or take evasive action to avoid rear-ending me. this only happens when engine is cold. once engine warms, car will accelerate from a dead stop without problem.

SUSPENSION

the subaru cannot hold the road and veers within the lane almost creating accidents while driving down the highway. the dealer was notified three weeks after purchasing the car that a problem existed. the car was taken into the dealer and the service manager drove the car and agreed that there was a problem. the problem was hypothesized to be due to the rear suspension system. subaru was notified because the car is under warranty and the problem may be a design flaw, but the request was denied to have the problem resolved. i personally notified subaru and filed a complaint, but once again they will not acknowledge a problem. the car is unsafe and its constant wandering motion is imminent for an accident. it is a serious problem that needs action.

your mandate for the use of tpms is another example of government good intentions resulting in little benefit and unnecessary cost to consumers. i want to run winter tires on our subaru and planned to purchase the tires on wheels equipped with tpms sensors. however, the only way to re-set the sensors is to take the car to the subaru dealer and pay $90 in the fall when the winter set goes on and to pay another $90 in the spring when the all-season tire go back on the car. the winter tires are expected to add a significant margin of safety in snow/ice conditions. the annual cost of re-setting the tpms sensor will likely keep me from running winter tires. what is the benefit of having a tpms system that cannot be easily re-set by the vehicle owner? *jb

there is no specific date nor was there an accident. this is a chronic problem. due to the new design of seats and head restraint i am now in physical therapy for chronic head and neck pain. started a couple of weeks after i bought my new car. had doctor appt, head scan and now physical therapy. i believe the scooped seats do not allow for an imperfect shape. my right leg is now legged and i sit at a turn i. the seat which puts a lot of strain on my spine in the over shaped seat. mostly the new head restraint in relation to the shoulder position of the seat puts a lot of strain on my neck. i am taking ibuprofen everyday and the pain is a real distraction to my work and daily life. i provide anesthesia full time and need to be at my best for this line of work rather than in physical therapy. this also costs money and takes away from enjoying my life. for a few months i was able to drive an older car 80% of the time and found the aching went away. i only drive less than ten minutes to work.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

2013 subaru outback. consumer writes in regards to vehicle transmissions problems. *smd the consumer stated under certain conditions, there was a considerable delay in engine response when the accelerator was pressed. when driving normal speeds there was no problem. however, after letting the accelerator up and slowing down to idle speed, the pedal was then depressed and the vehicle would often stall. it was an intermittent problem, but gradually getting worse. the dealer tried to explain the problem away, by saying the electronic accelerator pedal and new transmission had to work together in tandem and that some delay was normal. updated 10/17/13 updated 10/30/13

i have had 2 incidents since buying new outback in april 2013. i was at a complete stop while vehicle was in drive. when i lifted my foot from brake to accelerate, the car revved up and lunged forward on its own. both times i was able to slam on the brake and avoid an accident. now i feel that i cannot trust the car whenever i come to a stop. i am waiting to hear from dealer about this 2nd incident, since after 1st time they tested and said "cannot find a problem"...... however, after reading another complaint it could be a malfunction between electronic accelerator pedal and new cvt transmission!!! also, sometimes i feel the car is maintaining a speed without any acceleration (like on cruise control).

STEERING

i have owned over 20+ cars ranging from 4runners, s2000, to lancer evo. my 2013 outback is by far the hardest car to steer on the highway. it wanders to both directions at highway speeds and its difficult to correct it back to center. some owners have been accused of driving drunk in a outback, subaru needs to fix this before loosing your most loyal owners! many 2012 2013 outback owners have been calling this issue stiff, heavy, hard, not return to center steering. here are my observations after some research: -2013+ new fb25 engine 2nd gen cvt returned suspension -i also own a 2014 forester with electric steering (drives normal), outback has hydraulic steering -i test drove couple other 2013 outback 2.5i same firm steering -i test drove a 2013 outback 3.6r (steering feels normal much softer) -check steering effort should not have more than 6.6 lb (measured with scale) -some owners had success readjusting their gearbox backlash to less than 3 lbs go to: http://www.subaruoutback.org/forums/104-gen-4-2010-present/31638-ob-lane-wandering-122.html -on page 114 there are 3 picture attachments posted by j delman -steering column recall for 2013 legacy/outbacks manufactured from 2012 feb15-jun15 (i don't think this will fix the wandering issue)

the new outback is exhibiting lane wandering as others described in good detail. other vehicles i've driven go in a (more-or-less) straight line with minimal effort and minimal corrections. the ob is all over the road, able to stay in the lane with a lot of effort and correction. there is a big flaw in the steering (maybe not all but a lot of them) and it is a safety issue. is it going to take a major accident and/or a death before nhtsa and subaru takes a look at this issue??

AIR BAGS

i was traveling west bound in the furthest right hand lane at approximately 45-mph on los angeles ave. on 10/31/13 in moorpark, ca at approximately 11:30 a.m. on thursday morning. a full-size ford f150 pickup truck failed to yield while making a left turn into the adjacent shopping center. he was turning left out of a median divider in the center of a four-lane highway. there is no marked signs or lights to make a left turn there, but you must yield to oncoming traffic on la ave. from the broken yellow lined center divider. i hit the side of the truck causing the truck to spin around with the force of the impact. my air bags failed to deploy even though the impact of the crash was significant, the whole front end of my car was severely damaged, and the crash was essentially head-on. i suffered a acute cervical strain, and i went to the hospital the day after with pain. i am in the process of getting further testing to see the severity of my injuries. my two-year old daughter was in her britax car seat in the passenger side back seat, and luckily she was unharmed in the incident. i am very shocked that the air bags did not deploy, and i feel like this is a major safety concern that should be investigated.

after stopping at a stop sign, i attempted to drive off, but the car did not accelerate on application of the throttle pedal. the engine remained at idle, and the car rolled slowly into the intersection. nothing i did corrected the problem until i placed the transmission in park, turned off the engine, then re-started the car. the car then performed normally until i reached the next stop sign, where the problem repeated. in all, the problem occurred seven (7) times on this day, apparently at random. that is, at some stops the car performed normally, and at other stops, the car failed to accelerate when the throttle pedal was depressed. the service department at my subaru dealer was unable to replicate the problem and therefore performed no repairs. two weeks later, the problem occurred again, three (3) times in two days. this is an extremely dangerous problem, because it can leave the car in a busy intersection without the ability to move until the driver turns off the car and then re-starts it. this problem has been noted by other subaru outback owners in online forums, and at least one other vehicle safety complaint has been filed regarding this problem.
