VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER:MOTOR

windshield wipers on my 2004 mercury grand marquis began operating erratically two months after the vehicle was out of warranty. initially they turned on by themselves and could not be turned off; a week later i could not turn them on at all except in the very high setting. finally, 1-2 weeks later they wouldn't turn on at all. all of this erratic operation happened within a 3 to 4 week period seemingly at comparatively low temperatures (15 to 30 degrees fahrenheit). the dealer recommended replacing a switch on the steering column for $350, but this did not permanently solve the problem. then they recommended replacing the windshield wiper motor for another $350. so far this approach seems to have alleviated the problem, but such an outlay 2 months out of warranty is inexcusable, without a recall and free repair, given fords apparently generic problem with erratically operating wipers on their other products. fortunately, i was not in any dangerous situations (snow or rain storms, etc.) where my immediately safety depended on the reliable operation of the wipers, but this is a potentially dangerous condition and an inexcusable cash outlay for consumers.

unintended acceleration: last year (feb 2009) my 2004 mercury grand marquis had an unintended acceleration which i (weight lifter) could barely control and i almost crashed into 2-cars. i also had to have the brakes replaced due to severe braking required to stop the car due to the unintended acceleration i used a reliable mechanic (highly rated by the state of ma) as the local ford dealer shops are over-priced and unreliable. no diagnostic codes showed-up at the shop after the problem, but i would not have my wife drive this car? the car is well maintained and i had a previous grand marquis, so i know the car better than most. have you heard about this problem and is there a recall? ford was contacted on feb 23 2010, via their protal, and indicated that there was no problem or recall, and suggested that i go to their dealer (did not go as i have no need for bs). i informed my local mechanic that the car went into overdrive and i had to drive over the curb (brake to floor to stop it).l burned out the brakes but no one died. there was no diagnostic codes that showed a braking or other electronic problem.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

i own a 2004 mercury grand marquis ls that unexpectedly goes into unintended acceleration when slowing down or stopping vehicle. i never know when the unintended acceleration will occur. first noticed problem at about 24000 till now at 71000 miles. the problem occurs usually in a line of traffic as i am slowing down or slowing down to stop at a stop sign or traffic light. or parking the vehicle. suddenly the engine starts racing and sometimes the vehicle will jump forward rapidly (sudden unintended acceleration). i have to apply the brakes rapidly and with extreme pressure to keep the vehicle from hitting the vehicle in front of me or to keep from running a traffic light or stop sign. most of the time when the engine races and i apply the brakes the rear wheels will continue to spin at a high rate even to the point of causing the rubber on the tires to smoke and still try to push me forward. after applying the brakes i must turn off the engine using the key to stop the unintended acceleration. this is a serious safety problem. i noticed the problem not long after purchasing the car and reported it to the dealer dub herring ford in picayune, ms. while the car was still under warranty. they didn't do anything to check or fix the problem. they seemed not to worry or be concerned about this problem! i reported the problem several times to the dealer with no success. i then reported it to the ford motor company several times and they referred me to the dealer which didn't do anything to fix the problem to start with. i then took the car to an independent repair shop and they tried to find out from the dealer and ford co. if there was a recall or notation or fix for the problem. the independent shop said the dealers and ford co. wouldn't give him any information concerning the problem. they asked me to contact ford motor co. and see if i could get any response for a fix or repair and got no help from them. i am lodging a formal complaint against ford and the dealer.

my mercury marquis is unsafe! both of my night-time headlights went out at the same time. all other lights work fine inside and out. the head-lights now only work if i hold the high-beam bar, however, they do not work if i let go of the control bar. i drive my vehicle very little, and mostly during the day; however, i do take 70 mph interstate highway trips returning at night. there is no fuse for the head lights or the light control module in either the fuse box above the brake pedal, or under the hood. further investigation reveals that the head light fuse is inside the light control module which is located under the dash above the gas-pedal. also, i've learned that even when this lcm unit is replace, that a new lcm unit can be defective also. common sense dictates that something electrical is causing the fuse to blow in the unit. i believe this indicates a looming fire hazard about to happen. overheating the electrical system from where? if i would elect to have the lcm unit modified with a larger interior fuse, i fear this is not a solution either. ford needs to find the source of the problem that is blowing this fuse even in the new units. the installation at the dealership is $700.00 or above. the market price of the lcm unit is $90. fords needs to recall and replace this lcm unit for an indefinite period; however, since they are making a bunch of money replacing them, and no one has gotten killed yet, will they? i fear replacing the unit this week, an the new one failing and me, suddenly with no headlights possibly running over a pedestrian, or crashing on the interstate and me or someone dying. this problem makes my mercury absolutely unsafe !!! i want an indefinite recall of this unit, and for ford to find and repair the cause of the unit failing.

while driving home with my wife and granddaughter my wipers started to go on in delay mood and my lights turned on.i was shocked at this because my wiper switch was in the off setting and my light switch was in auto setting and it was a bright sunny day.after about ten or 15 minutes the wipers stopped and lights went out.a few day later i was going to the store and it started all over wipers staying on in the delay mood and this time did not stop.i call my brother in florida whom is a auto tech and he told me that it seemed like the multifuction switch and told me to change it out which i did.it did not resolve the issue and the car remains down due to this issue.there is only 42300 on this car which my father gave me as a gift and he bought it new from leominster lincoln mecury and i feel this issue is a safety problem which could lead to complete wiper failing or worse a car fire from some defective system that controls this wiper system.car remains down as of the writing of this report.due to myself being disabled and on s/s disability i do not have the money to fix this problem because i feel a dealer service tech should take this issue from here.i have disconected the battey and the car now sits in my driveway.

since august 2013, every time i turned on my signal light, the intermittent sound for the signal would click faster than usual indicating that a light might be bad. i would check all the lights around the vehicle and they were all good. then going about 55 on a highway at night, i noticed that it was really dark in front of my vehicle. pulled over and found that i was driving without light. the head lamps had turned off even though they were on the on position. i had to drive home holding my high beam lights at all times. i heard a click, the lights came on. i let go of the high beam. the head lamps stayed on for 15 min and click, they went off again. this happened to me 4 times. finally, i took the car to have it diagnosed and was told that the lighting control module had gone bad. i would think that there would have been a recall on this item since so many people have had the same problem as listed on nhtsa website. it could be really dangerous.

i was driving southbound on route 95 from baltimore to washington at night. while driving, my headlights suddenly went out. i normally keep the headlights set on the automatic mode. when the headlights went out, i turned the headlight dial on the dash to each of the positions without being able to reilluminate the headlights. i noticed that when i pulled the turn signal lever towards me, the high-beams would go on, but they would not go on when the lever was pushed away from me to keep the high beams on while freeing my hands. i therefore had to drive for approximately 20 miles while keeping the highbeams activated with my left hand. this posed problems when i needed to turn the wheel. i brought the car to my local ford dealership, jerry's ford in annandale, virginia. even though i kept the car at the dealership for several days, they were unable to diagnose the problem because the headlights were properly functioning. the problem recurred while i was driving south on i-95, headed to new york, on october 6. at that time i lost the headlights and they remained out for well over one hour, requiring me to keep the high beams activated with my left hand while driving the car. i am now experiencing the problem on nearly a daily basis. i make short trips to the grocery store, less than a mile from my house, at night, and invariably lose the headlights while driving home. one time i was able to restore the headlights by turning the dial on the dash to the manual position (far right). at other times, this does not work.

STEERING

i was driving down an interstate freeway at 65mph and came to a curve, the steering was very tight and was unable to keep the car in my lane. luckily there was no one next to me at the time. from that time on the steering kept getting tighter and tighter. i had to use bodily force to physically turn the steering wheel. i took the car to an auto repair shop and the issue was diagnosed as a faulty steering shaft joints. i had to have the lower steering shaft replaced. i was informed that 2005- 2011 mercury grand marquis were recalled for this issue. as of writing this 2004 grand marquis are not included. this is a major safety issue and should be looked into further. i believe ford/mercury should be responsible for the cost of this repair.

STEERING

steering was tight and as i turned the wheel, the steering became loose. i took the vehicle to my mechanic and he told me that the steering shaft assembly had to be replaced because of rust. he also told me that i was close to having a full steering collapse. i now know that this was a recall item on the 2005 - 2011 mercury grand marquis. why wasn't the 2004 vehicle included?

my 2004 grand marquis is steering like a tank. i took it to my mechanic and he informed me that the lower immediate shaft was corroded and that there was a recall 13s08 by ford for this steering problem.and that i should take my car to a ford dealer. when i got home i checked to see if the recall was legit. the recall stated that only 2005 thru 2011 cars were affected. i called ford customer service to see if my 2004 with the same problem could be covered by this recall and they said that they could do nothing!

EXTERIOR LIGHTING

while my wife was driving home at night, her headlights went out on her 2004 mercury grand marquis. she tried all combinations to get the lights back on and had to hold the high beam passing light up while driving the rest of the way home. i took the car to the local ford dealer to get it repaired and they told me it could take a month or more to get the part to fix it. in our area, thunderstorms come up regularly during the day, so the car can't even be driven during the day. ford motor company says that they can't provide a loaner or a rental so that we can drive safely until it is fixed. i don't understand why headlights going out is not a safety issue.

both headlights suddenly wouldn't turn on. very dangerous. night driving prohibited. ford has agreed to repair due to voluntary recall. glad this didn't happen when i was out at night. i live near dark dangerous highways and this could have led to fatal driving conditions had it happened on the road at night.this shouldn't be a "voluntary" recall where you have to call ford to get the fix.

STEERING

after being idle for approximately one week, and driving the car from the driveway, the steering wheel became very loose as if the steering wheel was going to fall off. there is a clicking noise made as you turned the steering wheel and the wheels do turn on the car. we had the car towed to a ford dealership to have the car inspected and possibly repaired. we do live in a snowbelt area with lots of salt on the roads. i did notice that ford issued a recall for the same model car for years 2005 through 2011 and wonder if this is a similar problem those cars suffered but was not noticed in the previous year(s).
