WHEELS

i purchased my new jeep cherokee on 2/2/2014. from very soon after i began driving it, i was aware that there was an unusually high amount of noise coming from the front end when the car was going more than 30 mph or so; it sounded as if the car had a propeller. i returned the car to the dealership the following day (i reside about 35 miles away). at first, they thought it was a transmission noise, but it was subsequently diagnosed as a bad wheel bearing. after a new bearing was shipped overnight from detroit, it was discovered that the bearing on the other front wheel was also bad and required replacement. i am contacting nhtsa because bad bearings on both front wheels suggests to me that there is more than coincidence involved, and that other new cherokees might be similarly affected if a whole production run of defective bearings have been installed on this model of vehicle. i am aware that bad wheel bearings, if ignored, can eventually lead to catastrophic failure, bearing seizure, and loss of wheels and/or vehicle control.

VISIBILITY/WIPER

a jeep authorized dealership changed the engine oil and oil filter for my vehicle. about 15 minutes after i took my vehicle from the dealership, the incident happened on a highway. "service transmission" warning showed up first, the engine light was on, and some electronic functions were disabled, which include, but are not limited to, the forward collision warning, the parksense, the lane sense, and the adaptive cruise control. the esc activation / malfunction indicator light was on. there was loud rattling noise from the engine, and the vehicle was shaking while moving on the highway. i had a difficult time moving the vehicle off the highway. after i parked on a surface road, i found no engine oil was registered on the dipstick. the leaked oil was splashed over the vehicle's exterior. in particular, it covered the parking sensors and the rear window, which disabled the electronic safety features and greatly reduced my visibility while driving. the vehicles behind me on the highway were also splashed by the leaked oil and were beeping and/or cutting in my lane to complain. the dealership determined that the rubber ring that seals the cartridge housing of the oil filter was broken, causing the engine oil leak. this o-shaped rubber ring comes with the oem oil filter that was installed when the oil filter was changed. the engine was damaged. the dealership stated that no test drive is required to check if there is a leak for oil change service. three other jeep dealerships confirmed this claim. i believe there is a design defect in the oil filter sealing that can cause life threatening accidents. i believe jeep does not instruct their authorized dealership to implement an oil filter change procedure that ensures a part defect like this would be discovered before the vehicle leaves the dealership.

POWER TRAIN

driving along at 30 when first the engine light came on, then immediately after the display said transmission and the display was lighting up with all sorts of symbols. the transmission completely disengaged and the car coasted to a stop. it would not move. fortunately when i felt it losing power i was able to make a quick turn into a store parking lot. had that happened on the highway i could have been killed because the car just totally lost all motion as i was driving. i turned it completely off for a few minutes and it started but with the engine light showing. i called the dealership kelly jeep chrysler in lynnfield and told the service department what happened. i drove straight there...furious. the service guy took down the information i relayed about the incident. i told him i had read recently that their 9 speed transmission had known issues and he said he didn't know anything about that. i told him not to even tell me i am the first to report this problem and he said "maybe not in the whole country but i don't think we've had this problem here" and i told him not to speak down to me because it has been written about already as a known issue. he already had the courtesy car waiting for me and he immediately walked me out the door to the car. i was there less than 5 minutes. i know he did not want me speaking to anybody in the service waiting room as i could see people sitting there waiting for their own repairs. this is an issue that will end up killing somebody.

POWER TRAIN

i purchased a 2014 jeep cherokee ltd. in 10/2013 for my daughter to learn to drive (with learner's permit) and to drive when she gets her license soon. i was driving the car in march on i-10 in heavy traffic time when suv made a whining noise, gears stalled for several seconds, rpm's dropped. suv continued to do this at a variety of speeds with increasing frequency. the car has less than 7000 miles, so i brought suv to selling dealer's service department and was told they could find nothing wrong. they guessed and updated software, then closed the service order. after leaving dealership, suv performed 5 intermittent and similar episodes on the way to destination that was about 7 miles away. i returned suv to the same service department the next day and reported the incident to chrylser and jeep customer care (jcc). jcc contacted the dealer. a decision was made to remove the entire transmission to be sent to jeep engineers to dissect and determine cause of the problem. a new transmission exact to the old, only with 'updates' was placed in the suv. since these series of events have occurred, i have discovered that the jeep cherokee had 4 holds on releasing the suv due to the issues with 9 gear fiat transmission. i was also told by the dealer that ours was the 2nd such case seen in their service department with the same problem. ultimately, jcc offered more warranty and the ability to skip one payment of which i did not accept. the only acceptable offer would have been for the engineers to tell me that the suv is safe for their own new teen driver or to take the suv back, to no avail. jcc sent the case to the 'case analyst' team, but ultimately closed the case as resolved. i have serious concerns about my daughter driving the suv once she obtains her license. i also have concerns about her younger brothers riding in an suv that may perform unsafely and unpredictably.

SEAT BELTS

since the purchase of my new 2014 jeep cherokee the transmission has shifted rough when in stop and go traffic, getting stuck in the lower gear and then finally slamming into the next higher gear causing the car to jump forward - extremely dangerous when in close traffic! it only happens when in stop and go traffic up to 15-20 mph and it seems like it will not shift no matter how much i accelerate then it releases suddenly. on the highway in the higher gears it seems to slip only occasionally. the rear seat belts also have consistently "locked up" removing all slack until you have to pull over and stop the vehicle, turn it off, unbuckle the belt let it all the way back in and then reattach it. yesterday 4/28/14 it did this again to my granddaughter, when we found a place to pull over it would not let us unbuckle the lap piece or give her any slack in the shoulder strap to get out of it, i was forced to pull into a recycling center and borrowed a knife from one of the workers to "cut" the belt in half so it would release her. both rear seat belts do this on even roads with no sort of incline or bumps! i will be carrying a pocket knife from now on, what if we were in a accident or needed to exit the vehicle quickly??!! dealership said they would order new belts and have them installed, i have an appointment to take it in tomorrow for them to diagnose the transmission problem & seat belt problem. i will follow up with the remedy or lack thereof. the current mileage is now at 8700 miles.

on or about march 10 2014 while driving my new cherokee at about 2000 miles i felt a wobble when taking off from a complete stop, seemed to be front right side of vehicle shimmy and then stop.as days went on i noticed it more and more. several weeks ago i did an internet search for my vehicle having a wobbling issue and found the jeep cherokee forum with a handful of others with similar issues with there 2014 cherokees also, this made me very worried that there is a serious problem.the vehicle wobbles side to side most of the time while at about 1700 rpm in 2nd gear and then seems to stop when the trans engages into 3rd.speed varies from about 10 to 15 mph.dealer could not replicate the problem, wobble is light at times or can be very noticeable as to make your legs shimmy side to side, wobble sometimes goes away only to start to shimmy again hours later.i currently have 3300 miles.i have informed my dealers tech rep that i am concerned about the vehicle going out of control or malfunctioning due to the wobble, the dealer tech rep stated that as far as that could tell it is safe.it is still shaking now most of the time and wanted to report this issue to you asap thank you

ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL

since a computer update to my 9 speed transmission, the vehicle has a significant wobble in the front wheels - left to right - when the automatic transmission shift between 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears. it feels as if the power transfer is confused and fighting between sending power to the front left and right wheels. it is significant enough that it is felt in the steering wheel, feet, legs and seat of the driver and the passenger feels the wobble also in the floor and seat. i do have a fear of the electronics and computer controls since this is a defect which can cause a computer malfunction while driving the vehicle. it is an important safety concern for both the vehicle occupants and other drivers around the vehicle.

STEERING

shortly after purchasing my 2014 jeep cherokee latitude i began feeling the sensation of wheel shimmy in the car. i first noticed during a right hand turn at accelerating the vehicle through an intersection. the best description i can give is as if a cv joint was loose and a shimmy in the vehicle and steering resulted. when at a complete stop and accelerating this shimmy occurs even when not turning right. feels like front left wheel? i took to dealer twice. at first they acknowledged the sensation to me and said they went to lot and drove a new cherokee to see if that same feel happened. and it did. told me it was the way they were. ??? i continue to have this issue and am very distraught about it. i called mfg client care & reported. they instructed me to take back to dealer and call them after dealer has the vehicle. i did that. this time the dealer says they are not able to replicate the problem when they test drive the car. they say all components look tight with no wear. jeep has 2500 miles on it. this is a safety concern. i am being told that to just continue driving the vehicle and if a complete break occurs, they will fix then. this is unacceptable.

very noticeable wobble in the front (possibly the right side) of the jeep when starting from a dead stop and/or turning right from a dead stop. had front axles replaced (on less than 2000 miles on a $33,000 vehicle!!) at dealership and on the drive home from picking up the vehicle, the wobble happened when i left a gas station - from a dead stop and turning right. this seems to happen after i've driven it for awhile and the vehicle is warmed up. i'm nervous this will become a safety issue and i've seen many other posts from people having this same issue. i am not happy about a wobble in a brand new vehicle and won't just "deal with it." i am concerned that this is a deeper issue than the axles and i will be left stranded on the highway someday.

i purchased a new 2014 jeep cherokee on nov 11. car has a very noticeable wobble between 10-15 mph when accelerating from a dead stop. wobble can be minimal or intense enough to make your legs shake. i've taken it to the dealer five times. the first three times i was told they could not replicate the claim even when a service worker felt the wobble. the fourth time the assistant manager was able to feel the wobble. they finally put it on the rack and could 'not find anything wrong' and said it was safe to drive. i was told to bring it back when the check engine light came on (it never has). the car now will now hesitate to accelerate when driving down side roads and even on the interstate. now when the car wobbles it feels like it could literally slide off the frame. on occasion the car will feel like it is jumping up the hill. i feel that this car is no longer safe to drive. i also had an incident when driving down the highway at 55 mph the car stopped accelerating and actually slowed down 10-15 mph. was trying to pull off the road when the car suddenly shifted very hard and began accelerating again. i was told that this was 'impossible' from the service department. i'm also having a major issue with the service department not giving me paperwork!!

this is the second recall that we have had on this vehicle in less than a year. here is the new reall information. summary: chrysler group llc (chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2011-2014 jeep grand cherokee and dodge durango vehicles manufactured from january 5, 2010, through september 8, 2013. the subject vehicles have a brake booster with a center shell that may corrode and allow water to get inside. we caled the dealership, and they stated they will check the break booster, but if there is no corrosion, they will not replace it. here is my question. what happens if there isn't any corrosion now when it's checked, but it becomes corroded 6-12 months later? i don't forsee the dealership telling us to come in every month to check it out. so we just have to plug along driving every day unsure if our brakes will work or not. this is rediculous and majorly unsafe. i believe the dealership shoud replace the part even if there is no corrosion! period. this is the kind of stuff that leads to major lawsuits after accidents.

the vehicle from the time we purchased it from the dealer has had a transmission shifting problem. the problem shifting happens between 1st and 2nd gear and also when you go to stop. recently while driving the transmission seemed to slip and the vehicle was not engaged causing us to pull over to the side of the road. the engine was revving but the transmission was no longer engaged. vehicle was turned off and restarted which we then put the car in drive and moved onto the roadway again. i have brought the vehicle to the dealer for this twice before. on the first visit the dealership said to just drive it and it will smooth out. on the second visit the dealership gave us the first software update which was done in april of this year, but it only lasted around a month or two. the problem is back again and i have made another appointment to bring it in on thursday, july 3rd for another software update.

the first issue arose as the vehicle was being backed out of a driveway. while still in motion, the vehicle produced an audible and visual collision alert with no obstructions present. the vehicle stopped suddenly, partially in the roadway, shifted to neutral and shut the motor off. it was necessary to cycle the vehicle through stop-accessory-run and back to accessory before the vehicle could be placed in park. once in park, the information center (evic) read "battery voltage low". after returning to the stop position the vehicle was restarted and the malfunction indicator (mil) remained illuminated. scrolling to the battery status on the evic showed a reading of 13.9v, within a normal range. the vehicle was placed in drive and operated properly, except for the mil for 24-hours with multiple starts and stops. the following day, upon starting the vehicle, again an audible and visual alarm sounded and the vehicle shut down completely, with the evic reading 4-wheel drive unavailable. it then changed to adaptive cruise unavailable, then forward collision warning unavailable. an indicator light with an exclamation mark stated that service was required. again, the vehicle was cycled through the stop-accessory-run sequence without the break depressed to re-set the electrical sequencing. the vehicle was restarted and only the mil remained illuminated. the vehicle was then able to be put in gear and returned to service. both occurrences took in excess of one minute to return the vehicle to operational, and had they happened in an active traffic area, would have left the vehicle a sitting duck for oncoming vehicles. the dealership has been notified and an appointment scheduled to address the issues. no repairs completed to date; owner advised that the vehicle is still able to be driven, but to keep the phone number to roadside assistance handy.

update on my vehicle.....i just had to take my vehicle back in on 6/22/14 and heard back from the service center on 6/23/14. apparently somehow my passenger side axle broke which caused the loud bang and my vehicle to stop running and/or from going into gear. they are not sure what caused this or why. now they have to replace it. i got my vehicle back on 6/25/14 and it does not drive the same, does not have that smooth shifting like it did before, and can still hear a very faint clinging sound when driving. i do not feel safe with this vehicle any longer. it really upsets me that the manufacture let something like this get passed them. they need to do a better job on inspecting these vehicles before they send them out to consumers and do a better job on inspecting all parts. this incident along with my last one i posted about my transmission were told to the manufacture. now i really do not feel safe with this car, really i don't.

while sitting on an incline at a stop light, our brand new 2014 jeep cherokee that had only bought 2 days before shifted in to neutral on its own and rolled backwards when the gas was pressed. we had to shift the transmission into manual and back to auto several times to get the gears to catch. luckily no one was injured and we did not roll backwards into traffic. after that incident the transmission was sluggish and would not shift gears properly.

transmission safety complaint : built 1/2014 delivered 6/2014 purchased jeep cherokee on june 2, 2014 with 170 miles on odometer from capo motors dba orange coast chrysler, jeep ) . returned jeep to sales agent june 10, 2014 complaining of transmission not shifting from forward stopped position correctly .he informed us that transmission must adjust to us. ( 1 ) jeep seems to down shift to a neutral mode even though the transmission indicates jeep is in the drive gear mode. when applying gas to the jeep the transmission hesitates then lunges forward requiring driver to apply the brakes to avoid rear ending vehicle in front. ( 2 ) when applying gas the jeep seems to " quick " shift from lower 1-3 gears to middle gears with excess strong loud force. ( 3 ) when driving down ca. 18 steep mountain two lane highway from 5500 ft. to 1500 ft. .in drive mode the jeep suddenly shifted into neutral when gas was applied rounding a hair pin bend. i could not apply the breaks because of heavy july 4th. boat trailer traffic behind me. i shifted to manual from drive and the number 9 drive mode was indicated. i then move the gear shift to drive minus and 2 mode was indicated. the jeep then lunged to a slower speed. i was able to regain control of jeep to round the bend and immediately pulled to the side of the mountain road. ( 4 ) jeep gets very poor mileage, seems to have high rpm and seems to be stuck in too low of gear on highway. ( 5 ) in city driving any 90 degree stop light turn from a stand still position requires diligence and extreme caution due to transmission hesitation and erratic nature of problem. ( 6 ) transmission oil has had a foul smell at times.

as described in previous published complaints, the transmission on my 2014 jeep cherokee trail hawk is malfunctioning (software and/or hardware) almost from the start. the last incident--after a previous service at a jeep dealership--was the worst. while sitting at a stop sign (on my way to another dealership to have the vehicle serviced again for "service transmission" message), the "d" started flashing and the message"shift to p then desired gear" appeared. i followed the message's instructions but as i shifted into "d" the vehicle lunged forward (slightly into the near lane of the cross street). if a pedestrian had been walking in front of the vehicle (crossing the street) at that moment he or she may have been hit. if a car had been passing on the cross street in the near lane there could have been an accident. fiat chrysler delayed the sale of the jeep cherokee because of software problems. it appears to me from this site --(and other jeep cherokee forums) and from fiat chrysler's ceo's own words--that the software problems have not been properly addressed. nhsta needs to act.

when we bought the 2014 jeep cherokee it was new. there was no issue with the transmission until we had owned it for about a month. then it started having a rough shimmy as it searched for the correct gear going from 0 to 10 mph and then 10 to 20 mph. once it reaches about 25 miles per hour there is no issue with the shifting. we have had it back to the dealership 3 times. each time they said it was fixed, but upon leaving the lot, it did the same thing i had taken it in for to begin with. with jeep's update, we now have a long pause going up hill before it gives a rough shift at about 5 mph and then continues to shimmy at 10 to 20 mph. i was told on the third visit they would submit a report to the manufacturer to see what the next step should be to fix the jeep since the updates did not work. however, they tried the same thing again and said they thought it was fixed, but it wasn't. upon completion of the second visit i was told it needed to get use to my driving pattern? what exactly does that mean? what if more than one of us drive the vehicle? i am getting the run-around from jeep on a product they shouldn't have sold me in the first place. everything i read prior to the purchase raved about the 9 speed transmission. unfortunately, that was incorrect since the transmissions in the 2014 jeep cherokees all have the same issue and jeep doesn't really know how to fix them. i believe i need a new transmission; but will have to force jeep to do it and hope it works. my time is work something - just fix it. it's a lemon in my opinion.

the car suffers from poor shifting characteristics. it experiences extreme lag between the time the accelerator is depressed and the time that the engine responds. shifts to allow passing activities on the highway are especially problematic, as its ability to provide good response/power when attempting to pass at speed is, in a word, crap. the car experiences shift delays when attempting to accelerate from 40+ to 60+, it experiences lag and then sudden acceleration when attempting to maintain speed or accelerate while going uphill, and it experiences slow response off of stops unless the gas pedal is floored. because of its uncertain acceleration response, it is extremely difficult to be comfortable driving this vehicle. jeep needs to recall the car and perform actual qc testing on the transmission. it is simply awful and a dangerous piece of equipment to have on the road.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

i drive a 2014 jeep cherokee with standard cruise control which they refer to as electronic speed control or esc. the car manual states that once the cruising speed is set, it can be reduced in 1 mph increments by pressing the "set -" button. it doesn't indicate that pressing that button could result in more rapid deceleration of the vehicle or that it might actually cause the system to apply the brakes. on other vehicles i've owned, pressing and holding the "set -" button simply cause the engine to back down and the vehicle essentially coasts until the button is released at a new, lower set cruising speed. however, on a number of occasions while using esc i have held the "set -" down hoping to decrease speed by a few miles an hour. what has actually happened in those instances is that after a second or so, the vehicle begins rapidly decelerating and it appears the brakes are activated by the system. as you can imagine, that could be a very dangerous outcome if the driver doesn't know it's coming and there is other traffic following behind. i'm fortunate there was no traffic following me on the occasions on which this occurred. i went back and reread the manual on the use of esc and saw no reference to rapid deceleration or brake applications in this scenario. i then e-mailed chrysler about it, and finally received a response telling me that when using the adaptive cruise control ("acc") system, hlding down the "set -" button will result in deceleration in increments of 5 mph, though it doesn't refer to application of the brakes by the system. however, i don't use the acc system which is activated by a separate button. either i have a malfunction of the esc system or chrysler has failed to disclose a very important piece of safety information as to the function of the esc feature in the manual, and i'm lucky it didn't get me into a serious accident.

i am a nurse and travel for a living. on my way home from assignment in wv. just outside a bowling green on i65. my car jerked then lost all power. engine light, service transmission light and battery lights all came on. i was going 70 miles an hour. i had no acceleration. i coasted to the shoulder, across 3 lanes of interstate. i attempted jeeps emergency number but got the unable to connect voice mail, after 5 minutes my car restarted. i remained on right side of road. 65 miles later and 15 miles from nashville the car jerked and i lost the ability to accelerate once again. i pulled over and the car restarted. i am now in a hotel for the third night and unable to get home. i took my car to jeep this morning to be serviced. i was told a computer malfunction caused the problem. the dealer did not offer to pay for rental car, hotel ect. the new part is supposed to be here tuesday. no i was not killed or involved in a crash however, i can think of several scenarios where i easily could have been in a horrible crash. what if the new module is also bad i asked. it's like my new laptop i was told. sometimes they just break.

at low speed turns, left and right, ie in a parking lot or turning at an intersection, popping and groaning from front suspension/steering assembly. very audible and ratcheting feel can be felt in the frame and steering wheel. not an issue when driving straight or at speed. first trip to dealer...could not duplicate. next day, after contacting jeep consumer service, the jeep was taken back to the dealer and i test drove the vehicle in the parking lot for the service consultant. the popping/groaning noise was evident in every turn and the car was taken into the service area for suspected "suspension" problem. next day contact with dealer...they think it is either the axles or transmission. called jeep and they called dealership. i was then told by jeep they were replacing the axles. subsequent msg from service department confirmed they were changing the right front axle but it was back ordered. now two days...no jeep, no transportation, no loaner. i am a master army aviator with thirty years of flying. i know when a machine is broke or about to be.

i received a recall notice for a brake booster in may of this year. i contact my dealer at champion dodge, 9655 firestone blvd, downey, ca 90241, (562) 231-3500 and was told that i should call back at the end of june because they did not have any brake booster in. it was stated that jeep was slow in sending out the parts and so they didnt have a time frame as to when they would get the part. i was also told that no other dealer would have the part because it was the same situation for all dealers. at the end of june i contacted the company again and was told that i needed to have my car brought in first. this was not told to me originally and so more time was wasted as i needed to take the car in for them to determine that it was in fact the brake booster. i took my car in that week and was told that it was the brake booster and my name would be put on a list. in july i called and asked about the brake booster shipment and was told that they had a long list and didnt see my name on the list. so now i am still waiting. i received another recall notice now for the sun visor vanity lamp. since having this car i have received 3 recalls which i have never had before with any other car i have ever owned. i will not be buying a jeep again. please assist me in either canceling out this lease or having these recalls fixed. i have also already experienced the brakes being put on by itself while driving my vehicle and it flashes "brake" on the dashboard. thank you.
