EQUIPMENT

my new 2013 accord has a serious safety issue with the user interface to the phone and music. the phone book, xm, and usb music are displayed in long lists. my 32 gb drive has 300 albums. my full collection has many more. the problem is that there is no fast way to scroll these lists. the driver must reach to the furthest-right knob and twist. this moves the list down one item. so selecting any list item while driving takes the driver's eyes off the road, causes bodily contortions (it is a long reach), and makes i impossible to actually scroll more than a few dozen places down the list.

WHEELS

right front suspension makes a metal to metal squeal noise when turning to the left while the wheels are rolling. crown honda, durham, nc replace three parts in the right front suspension under warranty as directed by honda tech line on nov. 20, 2012. however, as of dec. 5, 2012, the squeal noise has returned when turning to the left and the right front suspension now makes a clunk noise when traveling over small dips in the roadway. since the noise sounds like metal to metal rubbing, i'm concerned about breakage of these moving parts and my overall safety.

SEATS

please, please back off on your head rest requirements for safety. please allow the consumer to choose the position of the head rest. not only honda, but ford, gm, chrysler, all manufacturers are creating very painful car seats since 2009 due to this awful headrest requirement. seatbelts are a law, but i choose to wear them. motorcycle helmets are no longer a law, but i choose to wear them. now let me choose my headrest position. i think these new designs are going to cause far more injuries and insurance claims from people having their heads cocked forward, in a forced improper posture. i had migraines due to my headrest before i resolved this issue in my car by making modifications. i sit with proper posture and my head is forced forward. the only choice i had was to sit improperly in order to try to avoid the terrible discomfort this new law forces on me. please change this law.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

2013 honda accord sedan, v6, touring model i stopped at the signal light at route 50 and chain bridge road; when the light changed i pressed the accelerator to leave, but nothing happened - the car was not moving or accelerating. cars behind me honked and i pressed the accelerator more and then all of a sudden the vehicle's front tires spun a little and the car took off. this gave me a scare! this happened again 10-15 miles later as i was arriving near my home in alexandria, va. however, this issue is not causing the car to jerk, surge, or accelerate on its own; during this period of hesitation, when i need the car to accelerate, it appears to momentary die, stall, or run out of gas. i thought this was very odd, so i inspected the accelerator area, floor mats, etc. and everything appeared normal. this same incident happened on november 16, 2012, november 27, 2012, dec 4, 2012 and dec 11, 2012. i visited fairfax honda service department hoping for a quick remedy. unfortunately they were unable to duplicate the problem until the service manager and i drove the car together during my 11 dec 2012 visit. the service manager told me this was characteristic of the 2012 honda accord sedan. he and i then drove a 2012 honda accord and i found this to be obvious when driving the 2012 honda. i am very surprised this dangerous technical problem/issue has not been highlighted and remedied for the 2013 vehicle. i am very uncomfortable and concerned that due to the hesitation when attempting to accelerate i may be hit from the rear or hit by another vehicle due to this recurring malfunction. my wife feels this vehicle is dangerous and refuses to drive it. i have previously discussed this technical problem with honda of america and they have opened a case file [xxx]. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

affected parts: windshield and wipers. this happened during the day time, about 8:45 am: a gentle rain was encountered so i turned on the windshield wipers to slow and steady (not intermittent). the water piled up on the windshield to the left by the door post and to the right near the middle of the windshield and continued to stay there until i slowed down to turn off the road. the right side (passenger side) was clear. the water restricted my view to the left and right (from the left door post to about 10:30 clock position, and from about 1:30 to 2:30 position. dangerous in standard daylight, but this could be very dangerous at night, or with a much heavier rain. the car is new and this is my first experience with enough rain that i've had to turn the wipers on steady.

SEATS

i purchased a 2013 honda accord after my former car was rear ended and i suffered severe whiplash and back pain. as a result of this i did not realize the poor design of the seat, and more specifically the head rests. in my test drive lasting 10 - 15 minutes i did not notice it, but after two weeks of ownership and driving the car 1 hour each way to and from work, i have noticed that the head rest sticks out so far that it is impossible to get comfortable in the car, and additionally, it hurt the thoracic portion of my middle back. i know this, because although i am still in physical therapy, on the weekend when i don't drive the car my back hurts much less than it does during the week when i make my commute to work. additionally this weekend my wife was a passenger in the car for a long drive and she suffered from the same pain that i suffered from. it is so bad, we had to cut our trip short. i contacted the dealer ship where i purchased the car and they stated that this is not a defect but a requirement by the us government. therefore i am contacting you concerning help in resolving this issue.

the seats are horribly uncomfortable. the way they are designed, they make you hunch over, where your spine is in the shape of a c, instead of how it should be. the headrest pushes your head forward that furthers the pain. i got a lumbar cushion (to make driving the car bearable), but now there is an gap between my upper back and the seat. i've also had to turn around the headrest, because it was hurting my neck pushing my neck so far forward when the rest of me is set back. please fix this!!!!! no one should have to go through this pain with a new car or any car. make the headrests adjustable and seats with ergonomic support standard!

STRUCTURE

i have purchased a 2013 honda accord touring model. it is equipped with a front collision warning system (fcw) which has a radar sensor in the grille. the system alerts can be set for long, normal or short. when set for long the alert should come on about three car lengths away from the vehicle ahead. if the system determines a collision is possible, it should give both visual & audible alerts, including a heads-up warning that flashes on the windshield. the fcw system is not working as it is described in the owners manual. in fact it only alerts @ random times. i have had the dealers technician check it out on highways, main streets & local streets. he could only get the system to give an alert once when the car ahead was standing at a red light. the alert came when we were about one car length away from the vehicle ahead. he tried it again @ the next red light & it did not give any alert. i have tested the system at all speeds & distances driving behind a car driven by my wife, no alerts. the technician said the system does not seem to be working & he would call american honda to get information on how the system should work. have been in touch with american honda & at this point in time they do not admit that there is a problem. i would have no problem having them or any third party check out the fcw system.

2013 honda accord cvt lx 4 cylinder. started vehicle, placed in reverse, gave it gas, went no where. engine felt resistance but as i gradually gave it fuel, it whet no where . then pulled slightly like a manual with the clutch semi depressed. after about 30 seconds it started to pull but very sluggish. i put in drive to see how it did. it pulled like normal. then when tried reverse again it also worked normal. has been sluggish at stop signs several times, leaves you lacking confidence if any traffic is coming at all as your not sure it will always respond if you turn and cross any lanes.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

our 2013 honda accord ex-l is equipped with a right turn signal blind spot camera which activates when the driver initiates a right turn signal. the dash console display screen gives the driver a view of the blind spot area. the screen also displays the area directly behind the car whenever the driver places the car into reverse. on the day specified, the right turn signal camera activated as i was merging into the right lane, but then, instantaneously, the display system froze, popped repeatedly, and then went to a dark screen--much like static on a television set. this has occurred more than two dozen times, even after my local dealer replaced the unit. on other occasions, the rear back-up camera either freezes, pops, and goes to dark screen or freezes in position--while i am driving forward down the highway. i have taken the car to my local dealer five times already, and, as of yet, they have been unable to fix the problem. the whole system pops, freezes, and reboots itself multiple times each day. sometimes it is necessary for me to stop the car, turn it off, and then turn it on again in order for these features to work.

SEATS

no incident. this complaint is about the headrests which are not adjustable and force heads into an unnatural and uncomfortable position. we have a long trip coming up and am concerned about sitting in unnatural positions for extended periods. i understand that these headrests must comply with nhtsa specs and there's no allowance for customizing but the safety issue (whip lash) may be cancelled by muscle fatigue, discomfort (and thus driving distraction). this needs to be corrected for safety sake.

VISIBILITY/WIPER

the driver wiper does not clear the water after hitting it's left stop. it actually pulls water back into view of the driver. during a moderate and heavier rain it affects visibility making it difficult to see the left side of the lane (essentially like not having a wiper on drawing the draw back to the right - it clears as the relative wind breaks up the water). (picture/video available during a light/drizzle rain). this happens at 50+ mph.

no "incident" but writing to express my strong displeasure with the new requirements for head seats. i understand safety and that the new angle is a government restriction. i measured the angle in my 2006 acura at 25 degrees while the 2013 accord is 35-40 degrees when factoring in the thoracic/lumbar support added. i am a physical therapist by profession and this type of posture is terrible for people to sit in. the ear should line up with the shoulders for good posture, not be inches in front of the thoracic spine. this forces forward head posture which is terrible for the joints and muscles of the spine/shoulders. i have had many patients complain of this in other newer vehicles as well. chronic neck and back problems are/can/will develop. safety must be balanced with everyday comfort and ergonomics!

i purchased a brand new 2013 accord ex-l on tuesday morning, during the test drive i noticed the air bag light on, i was told oh this is the passenger air bag deactivation light, as this car has so many features i thought ok, loved the car and bought it, then before i pulled off the lot i read the book and it said this was to total failure of the srs system air bags, i went back in to the dealership and told them, they took it back to the service dept. and 11 hours later they said the airbag unit in the steering wheel had failed and because this is a safety issue i could leave with the car we will give you a rental, and i could pick my car up in a day or 2, i said ok, then that day turned into another then another, then after me driving back to the dealer ship and waiting another 4 hours while they figured out what to do i was told that the part honda has not even released yet, and the release date is june 4th, i was livid, i told them they need to put me in another one, that this was very unprofessional because this was the 4th honda i got from them, they told me they like to try and fix it, i said by the time i get it my first payment on the car would almost be due, they said well let me see if we can figure something out, call us next wednesday and talk to them again, i am so mad that honda does not even make these parts available on a car that has been out for 8 months, i left in the rental and called honda and was told they normally do this on newer cars, but we will give you call back after the holiday, to date still waiting on my car that i have never even got to take home, someone needs to inform honda that they need to have these part available when the cars are. very disappointed in them.please contact honda about this issue... thank you

SEATS

during the first week of driving my new honda accord sport, i find myself constantly trying to adjust the seats to a comfortable position. i've concluded that the headrests push my head forward so much that the upper back is unable to rest firmly against the chair. this is very irritating causing neck and shoulder stiffness during my 1hr commute each way. my old 2005 model that i still own is not like this. i wonder how many accidents will be caused by the distraction and irritation this creates for the driver. i've read that this is a government required headrest angle. did they measure the posture of 80 year-olds to determine this angle? i'm in my 50s of good health and posture. i now have to try to find some upper back supports or i may have to pay for chiropractic care. i'm a designer and know that you need to test things before releasing designs to the public. perhaps this is a design error caused due to cuts in research funding? well, perhaps you could ask general motors to use some of their subsidies to do a little more testing on this? i'm being sarcastic of course, but perhaps honda is also at fault if ford are able to provide adjustable headrests. i'm unhappy and also suffering from a little buyers remorse.

VISIBILITY/WIPER

issue concerns the drivers side, side view mirror which consists of a regular mirror on 3/4 of the surface which is combined with a convex mirror covering the outside 1/4 of the mirror. as cars approach from the rear left and move into view of the mirror, it oftentimes (depending upon the angle of sight) seems as if the other vehicle is moving into my lane. my reaction is to move away which could pose a danger to someone on my right. additionally, because of the angle of sight, and the distortion of the view, it is difficult to tell exactly how far back the other vehicle is and therefore it makes it difficult to determine if it is safe to move into the next left lane. finally, looking into the mirror, because of the distortion, makes me momentarily dizzy. this mirror configuration is a potential danger. others i have spoken with ( 7 drivers) have agreed with my assessment honda offers no alternative mirror and apparently there is no after market mirror to use in place of the standard equipment.

the drivers side mirror is a danger. the outer 1/4 of the mirror is supposed to expose a blind spot, it does not. it is like looking in a fun house mirror distorting on coming vehicles. it is worse in the rain and at night with other vehicle headlights adding to the problem. i see accidents happening in the future. i called the honda dealer and asked to get a plain mirror put in. i was told they would order it and in a week i brought the car in for the replacement. after waiting 1/2 hour the service man came and told me the mirror sent was the same glass and there was no other mirror offered by honda. the service man got in my car to better understand the problem. he totally agreed that the mirror was a problem and a danger and did not know why honda would use such a mirror. i called honda of america to relay the above. i got what only could be called a "shrug of the shoulders". honda does not care. i think other will soon complain. updated 07/19/2013 *js

i purchased my honda accord 4cy, no navigation in april 2013. after having the vehicle for two weeks, i was backing out of my garage and when i put the vehicle in drive, the monitor where the rear view camera shows up went blank. the radio came on but i could not see any of the channels on the monitor. i turned the power off and then back on and everything works again. this happens on a regular basis and the dealership where i purchased the vehicle said they can only run a test on the car when it actually happens and for me to bring it to them when i have the problem. they do not show any service warranties for this issue. the problem is this happens when i am going to work at 5:00 a.m. and only when the vehicle is inside a garage. if the vehicle is parked outside it does not happen.

i bought a 2013 honda accord knowing that there have been complaints online about the headrest issue, but brief test drives prior to purchase don't fully reveal the extent to which this is a safety defect.. an acura (also made by honda) dealer even told me that acura had had these same complaints for several years, but modified the headrest design in the 2013 models to correct the flaw. honda has not done this yet, though, in honda models. i test drove many other manufacturers' cars and they comply with federal regulations without such an obvious design problem i'm 5'4" and sit up straight when driving, which means the head restraint continually bumps or pokes the back of my head while providing no back support at all--which is itself a safety defect in a crash. so is the fact that it pushes my head so far forward that it impedes good visibility when i turn my head to look back over my right shoulder. slumping causes back, shoulder and neck pain, untenable on a road trip and also impedes visibility. earlier model head-restraints that don't have this issue won't fit due to different center-to-center post measurements, so there are no available parts to replace the existing restraint (i tried -- even with one in my older acura). i have read online forums in which desperate honda drivers describe bending the posts or making other modifications to relieve their pain while driving. they shouldn't have to and this could jeopardize their safety. please make honda modify this design. i'd gladly purchase another headrest that doesn't have this issue, if they make one in 2014 (with the same distance between posts as the 2013 accords). or make it a recall issue--enough honda owners in the last few years have been complaining about it to justify that status.

VISIBILITY:REARVIEW MIRRORS/DEVICES

the 2013 honda accord lx driver's side mirror has an outer segment designed to provide a wider view of the road to correct for blind spots. however, the design is self-defeating. the outer segment shows more area, but, to accomplish this, it compacts the field of view causing a confusing distortion. additionally, the outer segment may appear out of focus to drivers wearing eye glasses. this issue was reported today by phone to honda customer service and a statement was taken by a representative. a more appropriate design for the driver'¿¿s mirror would incorporate a seamless, gradual convex curve at the left side, producing an uninterrupted panoramic effect. a driver's side mirror that causes severe distortion and confusion poses a serious safety hazard. even a momentary confusion at highway speeds may result in an accident and injury.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING

i was driving my brand new 2013 honda accord in the late afternoon as it started to get dark. this was the first time my wife and i had driven the car at night. i was startled to realize that it seemed that someone had put a blindfold over the top portion of our eyes. we could not see above a clearly defined line. below the line; light, above the line; total darkness. i had to turn on the high beam lights to illuminate the road adequately ahead, even at low speed. having to turn off the high beams when encountering on-coming cars was extremely unnerving. the low beam headlights do not illuminate enough to read normal street and information signs nor to see an object, person, or anything that might cross your path. if you turn these lights on in a dark garage you can clearly see this defined line. we called the dealer where we purchased our car and brought the car in after explaining the problem. the service intake manager paged me and told me they found no problem, that the lights were normal for this car. this seemed impossible to us. i asked to speak with a manager and the service director came out to speak with us. he told us he had encountered 7 or 8 other such complaints but all were deemed to be normal for the 2013 accord! he finally agreed to personally check-out the problem. he gave us a loaner 2013 accord to drive home. the loaner accord had the exact same headlight functionality! the next day i called the dealer and was put on the phone with the service intake manager who told me that a technician checked the lights and that they were normal and could not be adjusted. i called honda america and was told that if the dealer said the lights were normal then there was nothing honda could or would do. after reiterating that the car was not safe to drive at night, she suggested that i might consider taking it to a different dealer. i will try.

soon after purchasing my 2013 honda accord ex-l w/nav, i began to suffer severe lower back pain. it is impossible to adjust this seat into a comfortable driving position. within 10 minutes, my legs and hips begin to go numb. fatigue forms in my arms and an acute tightness forms at the abse of my spine. the seats are perforated matte leather and they grip you and create "hot" spots that cause constant shifting in your seat. it is so uncomfortable, i must constantly adjust the seat while driving. this is extremely dangerous and is an accident waiting to happen. i am fatigued and in lingering pain upon exiting the vehicle, even after only 30 minutes of driving. i complained to the dealer and asked them to buy the car back from me. they offered me approximately $5,500 less than i spent on the purchase one week earlier (with 400 miles on the odometer). i refused their offer as i am unable to recoup that loss so i may purchase another car. they also claim they had never heard a complaint like mine. unlikely, as the internet is full of this particular complaint against honda and many other manufacturers of late. this vehicle is not safely drivable as designed. honda needs to change the seats!

i bought my honda accord 9/11/13 and even on the test drive noted the uncomfortable seat to the salesman, but feeling positive about honda's reputation and my positive experience driving my 1996 accord for 18 years, i bought the 2013 honda accord, thinking the seats will soften like a pair of sneakers. it has now been only five days since i took delivery and my back pain has gotten worse from the position and hardness of both seat and back in this new 2013 honda. and now i have have read about all the same complaints with this seating on my websites. i cannot tolerate this pain.

i am finding the driver seat in my 2013 honda accord to be unbearable. i am 5' 10" and 160 lbs, and drive 20 miles to work, which takes an average 35 minutes. as many have said, the head rests are pitched too far forward, causing neck pain. i have tried turning the head rest around, but this allows too much space, and is most likely very dangerous, but i have found it to be more comfortable. in addition, there is no lumbar support at all, and the upper part of the seat curves your upper body forward. the result is that your body is curved into a c shape, which is extremely uncomfortable and painful.

dealer did a recall update of audio system in march 2013 to repair defects in audio system. this update immediately began to interfere with the car's cell phone blue tooth connection causing loss of pairing, loss of speed dials, etc. i have contacted the dealer and honda factory representative repeatedly. the only response i get is they are working on a solution. spoke to honda engineering several times. they offered two suggestions which did not solve the problem. recently i spoke to engineering and their suggestion this time concerns me. i was told that shifting the car out of park before the phone pairs seems to cause the phone failure and if i delay until the phones syncs that appears to be an remedy. when i asked if this was the permanent solution i was told no but now they know what is causing the problem and they will have a fix soon. i an concerned because what would shifting out of park have to do with my phone connecting to the car. if honda is using a system that is so integrated that a failure of the phone system ties in with shifting out of park what other potential failure was caused by the march update of a radio ? could that update also affect the transmission, engine or braking system? honda has known about my problem, there are many others with the same problem, since march and they claim they have been working on a solution since then. could it be the problem is more severe then honda will admit? in the mean time i own a car with a defect that is unsellable and one that could also be potentially very dangerous. my fear is that many car owners will just write off this system failure as no big deal and will use their car phones minus the hands free blue tooth. if so they could be driving a car which has been impaired in other ways, possibly with a defective safety system that resulted from honda's audio update.

since i first purchased my 2013 honda accord, the honda has intermittent hesitations after stopping at traffic lights, stop signs, parking and so forth. for instance, for the second time in the last five days, i stopped, went into a store, returned, cranked honda accord, backed out, and the car would not "go." it simply "stalled" , february 03, 2014. this was mentioned in 2012 to service manager, [xxx], at honda dealership service center; in mobile, al, he had one of his technicians to test drive my honda. technician returned and claimed, after testing, and test drive, that he could find nothing wrong. i did not receive any paperwork other than a verbal assurance that i was probably just getting adjusted to the "new car." after that, every two weeks or so, i would have a "whole week of intermittent" hesitations and stallings. this is very dangerous when trying to get through a traffic light - i have to really press down on the accelerator for the car to finely decide to "go". this problem was verbally reported again to [xxx], service manager, and technicians, january 10, 2013 - miles 5,384. the report was, "give it some time, the car is still new." - now, at 24,200 miles, this 2013 honda accord still scares me. yesterday (2/3/2014), at a four-way stop, my honda stalled, the engine did not "turn off", but the car would not "go." for about 15 seconds which is dangerous when in the middle of the road. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

during a snow storm in columbus, ohio, while i was in my house, my car windows automatically rolled down, covering the seats, seat belts and car seats with snow. due to a feature of the car documented in the owners manual on pages 128-129, if the lock button is compressed twice within 10 seconds, and held down (e.g., in a briefcase or purse when something heavy lands on it), the windows will roll down. this works well enough to transmit from inside a house to a driveway. i thought the car was all locked up, but it was not. googling "honda windows roll down" led me to a litany of complaints about the same thing happening, in snow storms, rain storms, etc. apparently the feature is for hot climates (texas, california--or ohio in the summer), but there is no way to turn it off. given how damaging this can be to a car, it seems like it should be a feature one could turn off. the customer service rep told me she had a call from a woman the week before who had the same problem. it should be easier to keep a car interior protected from the elements. honda indicated they have no plans to address this in the future.

near accident at 1300 miles. did you know the rate of owner filed nhtsa safety complaints related to seats/head restraints for the 2012 and 2013 accord are occurring at a rate 49 times higher than the combined rate for altima, camry, elantra and taurus? almost all accord complaints include the same elements: awkward posture, pressure on head and neck, pain and distraction caused by the seat/head restraint. honda tells owners that all manufacturers get the same complaints, and blames nhtsa fmvss 202: both are untrue! aforementioned 4-12-2013 count shows this is a very severe problem for accords, but not for all other manufacturers. • the seats in my 2013 accord are very uncomfortable partly because they provide no backset between the head restraint and my head; instead, they impose a “push” of a least 13 mm. this causes distraction within 30 minutes of driving, and within two hours generates severe pain which impairs my driving. • during the fmvss 202 process, umtri submitted a research finding that said “a 50 mm backset would result in head restraint interference for 13% of the driving public”. a majority of the manufacturers, among them gm, magna, johnson controls, aiam, the alliance, nissan, porsche, daimlerchrysler, and ford, stated that a “backset of 50 mm may cause significant intrusions into the space where these occupants typically place their heads, forcing their heads into an unnatural forward-tilting position”. honda ignored these findings,is solely responsible for bad seat design • a 1997 cdc report that found strong evidence of a causal relationship between awkward neck and shoulder posture/ prolonged static loads and musculoskeletal disorders (msd), and additional research reveals the impacts of msd, including pain and fatigue. • the accord is a danger to me, my passengers, bystanders and other drivers and should be recalled as soon as possible.

i recently had a very serious issue with my 2013 honda accord regarding unintended acceleration. while pulling into a parking spot at a garden nursery i applied the brakes but they did not respond in anyway, the engine then revved up making a loud noise, the car lunged forward over several railroad tie barriers, bushes, hit a truck that was parked in the lot and came to rest in a mulch pile. luckily the truck and mulch stopped the car and i was able to put it into park and turn it off. there is considerable amount of damage to the side of my car and the property of the nursery. this happened on may 8, 2014 at 5:00 pm. it was a gravel parking lot, dry sunny day. this honda was purchased new in 2013 and is a 4cyl with cvt transmission and has approximately 13,000 miles. the car had to be towed to the dealership where it sits now waiting for a honda representative to investigate this issue. it was a blessing that no one was standing in front of my car. much of my decision to purchase a honda was because of reliability and safety; however, i do not feel safe driving this vehicle. this is my first honda and i am thoroughly disappointed and alarmed after this incident.

STEERING

while driving on florida turnpike at approx 65 mph, i first felt a subtle change in the tires/traction of the car, so i look at the dash to see if i had a low tire pressure indicator, nothing. i took my foot off the gas, and i felt a slight swerve, then i saw "eps!" indicator on the dash. the steering wheel was completely locked up, with no play left to right at all! completely stiff. i let the car continue to coast because i was scared to apply the brakes if it would make it worse, thank god no one rear ended me, and as the road curved, i ran off into the grassy median of an exit ramp and nothing was in my path. i looked up what eps! was, and the owners manual suggested to restart the car. upon restarting, the indicator was gone. the car is being towed to the dealer in the morning. i am scared to drive the car, not knowing if this can happen again, and if my family and i will be safe in this car.

initially car drove fine and i didn’t have problems. over the last three months i started experiencing hesitation in the acceleration. sometimes while trying to accelerate from a standstill position i have to depress the accelerator all the way down to board for several seconds before the car would move. the hesitation may last approx 5 to 8 seconds & then jerkingly the car would get into proper gear to move forward. the dealership changed a kit on it a least twice which initially seemed to have corrected the problem but after about a week or two the same problem keeps recurring. on june 14th, just before merging on the highway, going at about 40mph & car suddenly began a quick forward jerking motion & not go above 40mph. when accelerator was released the jerking motion would decline as speed declined. this continued for about 10 minutes to the dealership. after speaking with the service advisor we went out on the road but the problem never manifested itself. they’ve kept the car to try and figure out what’s going on. meanwhile i am car-less. the car is no older than 16 months and i’ve been back and forth to the dealer several times already since april and they keep saying, “it’s normal” or “nothing happens when they drive or hook it up to their computers” or “we can’t diagnose or fix a problem that isn’t happening when we drive the car”. the supervisor further stated that even if someone from honda headquarters came they would say the same thing if nothing happened and would give the key back to them because they cannot fix a problem that doesn’t manifest. i am not alone with this problem. honda need to fix it. honda knows this problem is happening with the insertion of the cvt transmission on their 2013 accord. what are they doing to fix it? this is my very first honda experience and i’m totally dissatisfied… ¿

these comments pertain to my fruitless search for a car without head restraints that force my head down to an uncomfortable, painful position. at 5 ft 10 in i am just 1/2 inch over the average male height in the u.s. this situation, affecting many makes, models and years, is causing people to develop back problems, and in some cases remove or disable safety equipment. internet searches show hundreds of these complaints, and examples of how to remedy the problem by either removing or turning around head restraints. even a dealer suggested i did the latter, which i will not do. since manufacturers are ignoring the issue except for top-of-the-line models, the nhtsa should intervene to force a solution to help customers retain safety features while not incurring back injuries. this is part of the narrative i posted on one of many on-line forums on the subject: interested in buying a 2013 honda accord ex-l but i can't stand the head restraints. i can't drive with my head looking down. i tested it for 45 minutes and ended up with a back/neck ache. i tried a 2012 accord and found the same problem. my 2008 pilot does not have the problem, as a matter of fact, i tried a new pilot and it was comfortable. clearly, it meets safety standards without compromising driver comfort. i found hundreds of complaints on-line about the same issue dating back to 2009. here's one of those web sites: http://www.carcomplaints.com/honda/accord/2013/ i called honda customer service and they were no help at all. three times the lady i spoke with repeated the litany of "since 2009 all honda cars....etc" referring to new federal safety regulations. never mind that the pilot does not sacrifice comfort for safety. how can honda ignore such a problem that must be turning away accord buyers? how can honda ignore it when they have the solution in another one of its models (the pilot)?

first incident was approx in aug, 2013. driving on the highway accelerating at 36-40 mph, car starting shuddering and lunging forward, loud noise coming from car and it wouldn't accelerate. slowing down didn't help- it made it shudder more. pulled off road thinking, maybe a flat tire? i stopped the car checked and nothing.i was shaken up because the car was jerking and shuddering and you couldn't control it.i let it sit, while driving home, it had difficulty accelerating to the speed limit of 50. it then shuddered as the car slowed down when you took your foot off the gas, let it coast to a stop w/o applying the brakes. trying to accelerate, it was very sluggish, then it kicked in and took off. as if the a/c was on, straining the engine. i called the dealer and of course, couldn't duplicate it. they insisted nothing was wrong and it was just some odd incident. i know what the car did. i drove it for almost a year, experiencing this off and on but not to that degree the first time, with the shuddering when you slowed down and the lack of acceleration and then the "kick in"... it got pretty bad in the mid part of july, 2014. this was happening more frequently. the lack of acceleration - big problem with expressway driving. took it to the dealer, they indicated a service bulletin had been issued. they ordered a kit (valve?) and replaced the hardware and adjusted the software per the recommendation of honda.it seemed to be fixed, for five days. it started losing acceleration on the highway, i could barely get to 70 mph in very heavy traffic. dangerous! i took the vehicle to the dealer again 10 days later and told them it wasn't fixed. the head service tech drove it, wont duplicate. they are trying to troubleshoot. i'm concerned that driving this vehicle for a year with this problem has caused permanent damage to the transmission. i notified american honda.

(please keep in mind that my vehicle is in great condition. i've have it for over a year and i have never had this happen). i attempted to start my car a second time. this time it turned on just as before and the orange indicator light turned off. i felt it may have just been a fluke and i began driving down the street. however, not even half-a-mile down from my parents’ house my accord steering wheel locked up again! this time it happened in the middle of the road while i was driving and while other vehicles were driving on the opposite side of the road. i could not maneuver my vehicle off the road. i just barely managed to angle the front part of my vehicle to the edge of a curb while the second half of the car was still in the street. dealership informed me that it was a defective electric rack-n-pinion which caused my steering wheel to lock up. i asked him if this was a recall, or vehicle malfunction and he couldn't completely 100% provide me with an explanation. he did inform me that it’s going to be a $1,200 part to be serviced and that i will probably be without my own accord for about a week. i strongly feel that the honda corp should be aware of this issue, so i contacted honda via twitter. i felt completely brushed off and the rep, he said well sorry to hear that sir but they are repairing the issue sir. this was my second and last honda that i would purchase. i know i'm not the only one with this issue. honda should definitely look into it. the rep told me that they haven't had this issue previously-doubt it!

while driving on highway at 50 mph, the power steering failed and the steering light came on. luckily, i was able to slow the car down and get off of the highway. i pulled into a neighborhood and put the car in park. after several minutes, i put the car back in gear and the power steering was still out, but i was able to make it home. the next day, i started the car and the power steering was working. the steer wheel has jerked to the left/right on several occasions, but this was the first time that the power steering when completely out. i've brought the car to the dealer and am waiting for an explanation.

STEERING

the vehicle steering simply 'shut-down', or locked-up out of nowhere. it appears the power steering system simply failed. i was only able to regain control of the steering by bringing the vehicle to a full stop in order to turn it off and then restart it... as though i were rebooting a crashed computer! the issue repeated itself three times the next day, once while driving at full speed on a public street. we resolved to stop driving it, but by reflex i took it out the third consecutive day only to have the issue recur twice, thankfully none of these failures occurred while we were executing a turn, otherwise we may have crashed into something or someone, as some of the other complaints describe. i have now put the vehicle into storage until honda addresses the issue definitively, as others describe dealership diagnoses across the board, with virtually all admitting the issue was unresolved, even after repair or replacement of the diagnosed component(s). whether i simply have a lemon, or this is a recall issue in the making, i do not yet know, but what i do know is that this appears to be a very serious safety issue rendering the vehicle too dangerous to drive.

SERVICE BRAKES

before my car was a year old, my brakes started sporadic squeaking. on the first visit, i was told a manufacturing problem. on the second visit, i was told the next step was cutting into rotors. on the third visit, i was told my rotors were resurfaced. the following day, after the third visit, my breaks continued to make noise. i reached out to corporate, who advised i had to go thru other channels (back at the dealership) before i can file a complaint with them. i am getting frustrated due to multiple visits to the service department and my issue is not getting fixed. i should not have to drive around in a brand new car and my brakes are squeaking. i am paying too much money for this problem; in which the service dept/ dealership is giving me the runaround.
