STEERING:HYDRAULIC POWER ASSIST:POWER STEERING FLUID

2008 ford f-250 4-wd power steering. if you are on a muddy or icey road and start to lose control you cannot turn the steering wheel quick enough to regain control it's like the power steering belt broke. this was mentioned on the t.v. show motor week so this is not just my truck doing this. this is one reason i traded my 2004 pickup. i didn't contact ford motor co. or the dealer because they won't respond to my complaint about the tires made in mexico

ever since i purchased a 2008 ford f-250 super duty pick up truck with the 6.4 diesel engine it has had a problem with an intermittent problem with the engine. for no reason sometimes when you accelerate the engine will stumble and a cloud of white smoke pours out of the exhaust pipe. the smoke is so severe it will blind anyone behind the truck. this has happened several times. i have had several cases when trying to merge into highway traffic the engine will stumble and loose all available power. this could be a drastic problem if this is not corrected by ford motor company. i have had the truck to the dealer several time and they say it is normal for the truck to do this because it is part of the emissions. if this is the case then they are allowing a dangerous situation to take place.

SEAT BELTS

i ordered a 2008 f-250 super duty lariat crew cab in march 2008 and took delivery in late april 2008. when trying to install a child safety seat, i realized there was a problem with the seatbelt in the inboard rear seat. it would not go into ¿automatic locking mode¿ for the correct installation of the child safety seat as the two outboard rear seats and the outboard passenger seat did. i took it to my dealer, who replaced the inboard rear seatbelt only to find that one didn't work either. upon close examination of my owner¿s manual i found that it said that only the outboard rear seats and the front passenger seat had seatbelts with an ¿automatic locking mode.¿ the tech service line told my dealer that the rear inboard seat was not supposed to have an ¿automatic locking mode¿ and leo from customer service told me the same. ford was forced to change from a ¿type 1 lap belt¿ in the rear inboard seat to a ¿type 2 integral lap/shoulder belt¿ because of ¿anton¿s law,¿ which was signed december 4, 2002. one of the primary reasons for this law was the ¿increased protection that children between the ages of four and eight gain by having a lap/shoulder belt made available in rear inboard seating positions. when these type 2 belts are installed in the rear inboard seating position, there is an additional, and potentially safer, seating position available for a child in a belt-positioning booster seat.¿

sudden intense intense smoke from tailpipe at time of exhaust cleaning from my 2008 ford f250 diesel pickup (ford considers normal operation of system) while entering a toll plaza created a sudden and unsafe condition for other drivers behind me. the smoke was so heavy i could not see vehicle behind while passing through a toll plaza. the lane i was in utilizes a transponder to collect toll while traffic in that lane normally does not stop. if a vehicle had been stopped the drivers behind me would not have been able to react in time. it was also possible that their visibility of the structures of the toll plaza itself were sufficiently diminished that a collision with the structure was possible. i pass through three toll plazas each way, to and from work, 5 days a week.

i have a 2008 f-250 s/d manufactured 02/08 at the kentucky plant. this vehicle was purchased new in april 2009 and now has just under 8000 miles on the odometer. i have twice experienced uncontrolled involuntary acceleration with this vehicle. the common elements of this have been that it occurred after a period of extended driving at about 70 mph, using cruise control, just after an exhaust cleaning cycle, and when i overrode the cruise control to accelerate to pass a vehicle in front of me. when pulling back in to the traffic lane, the vehicle continues to accelerate and can be controlled only by maintaining heavy pressure on the brakes until a safe location can be found to pull off the road and cut off the ignition. a restart in neutral will result in an immediate run-up in rpm which requires a shut down of the ignition. there are no "check engine" or "service engine" lights displayed, and according to ford dealerships, no codes registered in the pcm. in both cases i have been able to correct the problem and continue to drive the vehicle (without use of cruise control) by pressing a "reset" button located on the top of a white sensor located in the air intake duct on the right side of the engine compartment. ford says they are unable to duplicate the problem and consequently cannot "make a fix". i am most concerned because this is a significant safety issue.

STEERING

i bought a 2008 ford f-250 extended cab truck and when i go over a small bump in the road the front end shakes real bad to the point i almost lost control going down a highway at 55mph. i checked the air pressure in the tires and they were at 70psi in the front and 80psi in the back. the door sticker said the pressures should be 70 in the front and 80 in the back. i have replaced the shocks and steering stabilizer shock and it did not make a difference. the old shocks appeared to be in good shape yet. i then replaced the tires even though they were still good and they were worn evenly. still did not fix it. i then dropped my air pressure in the tires to 60psi front and back to if it made a difference. still did not fix it. i had the dealership look at it and they said they could not find anything wrong with it. i owned a 1999 f-250 and it never had this problem. i had 165,000 miles on it when i traded it in for this one. i googled my problem and found a lot of people with the same problem. ford needs to come up with a repair for this soon. i won't let my wife drive this truck for fear of this happening and her ending up in a wreck. ford needs to think about the people and children that ride in there vehicles and the lives that they could take. i am a ford driver all my vehicles are ford and i'm not mad at ford yet but they need to cure this problem. this problem is for sure a design flaw.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC

in april 2010, my 2008 ford f-250 super duty's right front brake caliper froze, causing the brakes to heat up and begin smoking. the ford dealership claimed to fix the problem in april, but in july, the same thing happened to the front drivers side brake (smoke began billowing from the wheel on the highway). upon inspection, the ford mechanic found all four brakes on the truck seized, including the front passenger side brake again. the mechanic stated that he sees the problem all the time on the super duty trucks, but ford motor company refused to acknowledge that there is a problem with the brake design on its trucks. so far, the brakes on my truck have seized twice within a three month span, and the dealership more or less assured me it would happen again, and that i would need to take my vehicle in for an expensive brake overhaul every time it occurs. this faulty design not only presents a financial burden because of costly repairs, but also puts my life, and my family's lives, at risk every time i drive this vehicle.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE

on 8/10/2010, after driving my 2008 f-250 on interstate 5 for about 6 hours continuously at approx. 70mph in cruise control mode, i overrode cruise control to accelerate and pass a vehicle. as i returned to the right side driving lane, the vehicle failed to reduce speed and continued to accelerate in an uncontrolled fashion. with heavy braking i was able control the vehicle and bring it to a stop on the highway shoulder where i shifted it into neutral and cut the ignition off. a restart of the vehicle resulted in an immediate run-up in rpm which could only be controlled by shutting down the engine. no engine or other warning lights were displayed. by opening the hood and manually resetting the air filter contamination sensor on the air intake duct, it was possible to restart the engine and have it operate normally. i did not again use cruise control. this is a repeat of the condition previously reported in id# 10279704. the common elements of all three instances of occurrence are that the engine has been operated at 65-70 mph for approx. six hours, cruise control is engaged, and the engine is either in or has just completed an exhaust regen cycle . ford appears to be unable or unwilling to identify or address this situation, but it continues to be a severe safety hazard.

while driving on a local highway at approximately 60mph, the truck instantly "took off", the tachometer went to between 5500 & 6000 rpm, and speed increased tremendously to almost 90mph. i tapped on the accelerator pedal and the brake to try to interrupt what was occurring. i placed the vehicle in neutral, where the rpms dropped to 3000. i turned the truck off in hopes of resetting whatever had just occurred. when i started the truck back up, it immediately began doing what it was doing before. i placed the truck into "drive" and attempted to get out of the roadway. at this time, everything returned to "normal". i took the truck to the local dealership (university ford, durham nc). they determined within 40 minutes that it was the floor mat. however, i have tried for more than an hour today to recreate a floor mat accelerator sticking without success. i have also been unable to recreate the maximum rpms that i experienced with my foot in a normal driving position. this is the first and only occurrence, but i do not agree that it was a floor mat problem or that my issue was taken seriously. the service rep (kenneth) advised that the truck did not provide any computer codes indicating a problem, so there was definitely nothing wrong with the truck other than the floor mat being out of position.

i came home from work, shut my vehicle off, climbed out and noticed that something was dripping from the front end. got under and found that the radiator was leaking and at a pretty good rate. i called the dealership to ask details about it and agreed to drop it off the next day. i had to reference them to a tsb 09-23-1 concerning the radiator leak due to a hyper extended thermostat. a couple of days later i get a call and was told that the thermostat "seems" to be fine and that i would have to bear the cost of the radiator replacement at $1400. ford replaced these radiators in job 1 trucks if they were leaking at the time the venturi tee was being installed in the cooling system. i had the recall done but it wasn't leaking at the time. i have 37k miles on it. i've never over heated it, over sped it and i take care of my vehicle. the ford dealership is telling me that if they replaced the parts, sent them to ford and ford found they were still good, i would then get billed back later. as of right now, i have not had them continue with the work on the truck. the main reason is because that is a costly repair and i feel that ford should cover this knowing it's a problem. there was a recall as i stated earlier, and at least 2 tsb's stating that they know it's a problem. it's disappointing that ford is sticking it to people like me for a defective part. it's cracked and no one can tell me how it cracked. when asked, the service manager stated, "that's the million dollar question." what makes this even worse, i'm active duty military and am preparing for a duty station move in august. i bought the vehicle to tow my rv and family of 5, not for it to break and no apparent reason for it besides the defective part that ford knows about.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC

i was on my way to the building supply with the truck. i was towing a small utility trailer. as i approached a fairly sharp curve i applied the brakes and the pedal went to the floor. the truck brakes were gone without warning. the trailer brakes locked and slowed the vehicle enough to get safely through the turn. i relied on the trailer brakes and the transmission to complete the trip and get the vehicle safely home. when i got home i called the dealer and had the truck towed there for repair. the dealer said that the failure was due to badly worn brake pads causing the calipers to overextend and a caliper piston seal had failed. pads on all 4 wheels were badly worn. it was the left rear caliper that failed. i do not understand how the brakes can be this badly worn after only 21,000 miles.

steering is horrible in these trucks! ford should be ashamed. there is play in the steering. driving straight down the road the steering wheel can exhibit 1/4 turn of play either right or left, but the tires and truck are straight! now if that's not unsafe, i don't know what is! i have no lift, and stock tires. the alignment is straight. i have found numerous complaints on forums of steering gear problems. i had my steering looked at and mechanics are clueless. this is a ford truck problem that has been an issue for years. steering should be tight and precise not sloppy. i am begging the nhtsa to at least look into these, this matter is worthy of your time and i am sure an investigation will reveal numerous complaints of steering boxes that go loose or wear prematurely and steering components that break. i am sure ford has records of thousands of complaints and repairs on this because its been a problem for years and continues to be a problem.

on 2 oct 2008, radiator was discovered to be cracked and leaking at left lower corner at 6,240 miles and was replaced by ford under 3yr/36000 warranty. ford installed degas bottle "t" fitting to eliminate any further radiator failure. on 12 mar 2012, radiator was discovered to be cracked and leaking from left lower corner at 47,895 miles. ford said failure was caused due to an hyper-extended thermostat. ford replaced thermostat under warranty but would not cover radiator under warranty. radiator was replaced by non-ford mechanic. on 25 apr 2013 radiator was discovered to be cracked and leaking from right side seam at 58,520 miles. ford was contacted and offered no help outside of warranty. radiator was replaced by non-ford mechanic outside of warranty. it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know there is something seriously wrong with the 08 f250 6.4 cooling systems that ford fails to take responsibility for. i tow a 35ft 5th wheel several times a year and my biggest fear is the radiator going out while towing. if the radiator blew and the truck went into "reduced power" mode, there is a great possibility that a life threatening incident could occur, especially while towing on a step incline. i hope ford figures this out soon before someone gets hurt.
