ford explorer 2007 Complaints

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

i was approaching a stop light intersection in my 2007 ford explorer. as i braked to stop, all of a sudden the vehicle on its own downshifted into a lower gear and accelerated pushing me into the intersection. an alert driver entering the intersection saw what was happening and stopped in time avoiding what could have been a serious accident. the only way i was able to safely drive the vehicle back home that day was to carefully put the transmission into neutral each time i wanted to slow down or stop. the dealership where i purchased it, was unable to diagnose and repair the problem. *jb

new vehicle purchase in orlando, fl on 09-07-07. took to local ford dealer in memphis, tn on 09-10-07 with issue of vehicle pulling and steering wheel vibration when braking, (1300 miles on vehicle). ford said the rotors were glazed and warped, (ford service employees unable to explain how or why this occurred with only 1300 mile on vehicle). ford resurfaced rotors,(ford stated they are only required to resurface rotors, not replace them under warranty). ford did not replace brake pads or do any other brake job associated repair/replacement. rotors were resurfaced with over half usable brake surface removed. i explained to ford that with so much brake surface gone the next time the rotors are serviced, the rotors will most certainly need to be replaced at owners expense. (this repair has eliminated the first resurfacing option for the consumer).

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

we had just purchased a new 2007 ford explorer, had only been driving it for three weeks, we'd hadn't even made our first payment yet. we were at a stop at a traffic light in bumper-to-bumper traffic, when the explorer took off by itself. by this, i mean both of my husband's feet were firmly on the brake pedal and the explorer started surging forward by itself. to avoid colliding with the truck in front of us, he turned the vehicle to go down between the two lanes, and scraped down the sides of other cars. the vehicle only finally stopped when my husband threw the vehicle in the park. there was vehicle damage to two vehicles. the vehicle was taken to the dealership where they performed comprehensive diagnostics and testing. they could find nothing wrong with the vehicle. we had supplied them with copies of 30-100 other formal complaints from consumers who had experienced similar surging in their explorers. they said there was nothing wrong with it and therefore would not be repairing anything. this is a very dangerous defect! we were lucky no one was injured and we are afraid to drive it in case it happens again. with the numerous other complaints, many service bulletins to ford, you would think there would be a recall or at least some other recourse besides "sorry, there's nothing wrong with it, have a nice day."

the latest complaint/issue is that i am getting a blinking "o/d off" light and "service engine soon" light in my explorer. i had just had my truck in for some extensive assessment, following a litany of back-to-back electrical issues (full battery failure, failure of the 4wd component, broken or detached wire in driver's door, resulting in inability to lock/alarm that door with remote) as well as, long as it was in there, the 60k maintenance cycle (which included electrical, transmission, clutch, and axle checkup). then, problems again - i noted a blinking "o/d off" light and "service engine soon" light on the console while driving on the weekend. i was forced to take it back in for maintenance, about 3-4 weeks after the last service. just talking through this on the phone with the service dept, the indicated it was probably a transmission problem - quick search on the web for other ford owners with similar indications/warning lights seemed to back that up - so i anticipated i was looking at a full transmission replacement. to add insult to injury, the ford dealer where i get service done was in a 2-week backlog on transmission work (seems ford has a lot of these issues...)...so i ended up dropping off my truck and did not see it for 2 weeks while the work was done - then, when i asked if they had rebuilt the entire transmission (so that i could expect, at least, another 50-60k w/o the next issue), they noted that they had not rebuilt it all - here at am a few weeks later and the transmission seems to be acting up again...very disappointed in the quality of this ford with the repeated, back-to-back electrical and mechanical issues that all seem to happen at the same time - right around 50-60k for the 2003 model xlt.

on 11/23/2007 my 2007 ford explorer with 14,600 miles on it would not start. it was towed to the dealer. they changed the main computer and that did not fix the problem. it took 2 weeks for this part of the repair. they then said it needed a new instrument cluster which they ordered. the new part will not be here until the middle of jan. 2008. so i will be without my explorer for almost 2 months. after the first 2 weeks they provided me with a car to drive. it just seems like way way to long to have a new car (relatively) to be repaired. do you have info of this part failing on more ford explorers.

i purchased my new 2007 explorer v8 eddie bauer on 06-07-07. i traded in a 2002 same thing. the minute i drove it off the lot i knew there was a transmission problem with it. it wants to surge between first and second gear and when it finally goes in it just slams itself in. also if you are idling along at a slow speed it acts like you are gently giving it gas as it speeds up and slows down. the back lock on the window wants to pop open a lot also. the dealer has reprogrammed the transmission once and for about a week i thought it was fixed. then it started all over again with the transmission. the explorer now sits in my garage for 99.9% of the time. it has 5808.8 miles on it. i got so disgusted with the thing i bought a 2008 toyota camry and just love it. i have been a union member all my life and have always bought american products but it seems the american manufactures no longer care or there designers no longer care as some of the foreign manufactures are putting our products to shame. this used to be a proud country but now it is just greed. i believe i have bought my last american car or until they get there act back together. ford motor you are putting out junk. get back in the ball game. a very unhappy customer.

TIRES

within approximately one week in august, i've had two faulty tire valve stems cause low tire pressure and necessitate a trip to the dealer for repairs. these were on the same side of the car (right front and right rear). i park in a carport and the right side of my car is the more exposed side. the mechanic identified the problem by pressing sideways on the tire stem and hearing the air hiss as it escaped. this seems to be the cracking problem that i've read about in consumer reports magazine. i approached the dealer about fixing the others so that i would not have a crisis later. they pulled up a report based on the vin and since there were no official recalls, they would not fix them. i called ford customer relations on september 10, 2008 to file a complaint. i spoke to a representative who identified herself as jamie. her response was even more frustrating as she appeared to be giving me scripted answers: no recalls on my car, we don't fix things that aren't broke. apparently safety issues are not a consideration. i returned to the dealer who sold me the car and he fixed rest of my tires at no charge to me.

TIRES

2007 ford explorer with original factory tires. approximately may or early june 2008 my vehicle low tire pressure light came on. i discovered a cracked valve stem causing leak. dealer repaired and attempted to file road hazard claim. no paperwork, exact date or mileage available. approximately aug 08, 2008 low pressure indicator again came on. discovered another cracked stem leaking air on a different tire. vehicle mileage was approximately 34,700. repaired at dealer on aug 09 2008 for a fee. invoice available. on sept 30, 2008 i read news report about dill valve stem issue (nhtsa action number : pe08036). inspected tires - and discovered same splitting of valve stems as depicted in news article and dill air controls web site on the other two remaining original equipment tires. dealer replaced both valve stems and replaced for a fee. removed valve stems with no additional damage and returned to me. invoice available as well as defective valve stems. spare tire visually inspected and found no visible defects on stem. spare is mounted under vehicle with valve facing up against underbody protecting stem from elements. ford statement to news media indicates that ford's position is that their original equipment is not subject to same issue. i believe they have the same issue. i find that all 4 original equipment valve stems exhibited same cracking defect as dill recall. stems replaced on oct 01,2008 show 07 tr414 030 and 08 tr414 018 and both have a triangular logo. as all 4 stems were replaced, the only original valve cap i have came from the spare tire and displays "topseal" ,the numbers 317 and 630 and what appears to be the same triangular logo as is on the valve stems. i have the two most recent replaced valve stems and the cap from the factory spare in my possession as well as photos of both (numbers and damage) that can be forwarded electronically if needed.

EQUIPMENT

i have a problem with my 2007 ford explorer ? dual automatic climate control does not work properly: in auto mode (during cooling process) very cold air blows into my face through panel vents and warm air through the vents in footwell. no flow direction change, no recirculation at all. and i hear clicking noise from behind the dash panel. warm air blows down in every mode (face, face-feet, windshield-feet) that i chose. i learned from internet it's a blend door actuator problem and it's been in place since 1995 for explorer model. our local ford dealer says my ac is ok - no failures shown by scanner device. but i know there is the problem - the scanner shows only the actuator motor move but not the door move. motor may be ok and the gear may be stripped. they just don't want to fix it. i know it?s a safety problem also because some time the blend door will break completely and my windows will be frozen in winter.

(2nd row) carseat was installed properly by myself, a cpst, on multiple occasions with little to no movement at the rear facing beltpath. after a period of time, ranging from a few hours to days, the seat will loosen beyond the allowable 1 inch of movement at the beltpath. many times when child has not been placed in the seat. there is no identifiable reason for the belt to loosen other than the belt slipping through the tightener. the tightener slides extremely easily on the belt in both directions and it takes minimal, if any force to release the silver tab and loosen the latch belt. i have seen this seat loosen about 5 times in my vehicle. i do not let my child ride in it while installed with latch for this reason and i cannot use the seat to its full capacity if the latch belt is defective. i contacted sunshine kids and informed them of the problem and am working with their cost to replicate the problem again. they have offered to replace my current latch belt with another, however this problem is not limited to my latch belt alone. they will be replacing with the same product. for the time being i have declined the new latch belt so that i can wait to see if it is repairable, or recalled. on april 25, 2011 at a approximately 10 am, my wife and i were traveling in our 2007 explorer going southbound on rt 5 passing stockton ca. i was driving; my wife was in the front passenger seat. we were in the middle lane of this 3 lane highway in moderate 75 mph traffic and about ½ mile north of exit #473 when suddenly and without any previous warning (such as the way a vehicle handles when a tire is going flat or a wheel is coming loose), there was a loud bang accompanied by high vibration and a loud rumbling noise like a tire blowout. the noise and vibration lasted a second or so, then stopped for a second or so, then resumed again for another second or so after which the vibration stopped and the loud rumbling noise was replaced by a loud steady scraping/grinding noise. i got onto the shoulder of the highway in about 15 seconds. during this i had no significant difficulty in steering or controlling the explorer. the passenger side rear wheel had come off. all 5 lug bolts were fractured through and all but their short portions that are threaded into the hub, were missing. a long skid mark from the #2 lane over to the shoulder was done by the rear wheel¿s stabilizer frame and associated linkages having been scraped over the pavement. the last time the lug bolts and lug nuts on this wheel were removed and reinstalled was over 8,000 miles ago when the brakes were inspected. the torques on the lug nuts on the remaining 3 wheels were now measured and found to be per explorer shop manual specifications. i am concerned about the safety of the lug bolts in other vehicles that have similar lug bolts from the same batch as in mine. i have the hub with the portions of the fractured lug bolts still threaded into it, and it is available for examination by nhtsa if that will help in determining if a more widespread lug bolt safety issue exists.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

this issue is one where a dangerous situation occurs without warning and has not been repeatable on demand. normally, this occurs on flat, dry, paved road at speed of under 30mph. the "traction control" light on the dash comes on, the brakes begin to hammer, making the pedal unresponsive, and the steering becomes very hard to move, pulling the vehicle to the right. after the vehicle comes to a stop (of almost to a stop)... pressing and holding the "traction control" light/button resolves the problem, at least until the next occurrence, which could be days, weeks or months later. visits to various ford motor company dealerships have resulted in "nothing found" -- they always say that the problem didn't happen while they had the car and that no codes were found in any of the car's systems. as of today, the car is at joe myers ford, houston, tx where this same scenario has played out.

i had my 2007 explorer eddie bauer 4.0l v6 engine in service to replace a new radiator and reprogrammed pcm. paid $1300. radiator was leaking and transmission problems. transmission shifts too hard and hesitates going into reverse with a loud bang into gear. i really like my car except that it jerks forward when i am slowing down to stop. this occurs as my transmission down-shifts from either 3rd to 2nd gear or 2nd to 1st gear. it is a significant problem. it lunges my car forward when i am braking to stop. after they reprogrammed pcm and it runs fine for about a week then back to the same problem. ford should recall this vehicle with radiator/transmission problems. i think when radiator was leaking then it caused transmission to fail because its connecting lines between radiator and transmission. there was no warning light came on my instrument panel. it is so dangerous to drive especially with my family and children too. i don't think if it was a pcm problem. it is a physical damage inside the transmission. we are not paying to rebuild or a new transmission for around $4,000 while i am still paying on the car loan. ford must do something and recall this explorer vehicles now!!!! stop making cheap plastic / thin aluminum materials!

POWER TRAIN

in 9/2013 the vehicle was taken to the dealership for a metallic sound that occurred while it was turning or coasting. diagnosis was that the 4x4 module was commanding the transfer case to engage when not commanded. the dealership received an improperly recommended module from ford. they ended up using a sport trac module. this stopped the noise but caused the traction light to come on. we were advised to replace the anti-lock brake module. in 2/2014 we replaced the anti-lock brake module. on 3/25/2014 the transmission lost reverse and first gear and needs to be replaced. ford will not admit the wrong part was used and caused the transmission to go.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

drivers seat moved back and forth and interior lights came on while driving at various speeds, including highway speeds. first occurrence at 40000mi. started out happening only occasionally, then began more frequently. noticed sometimes occurred when going over a bump. finally able to recreate the event at ford with engine running in park by touching the keys. keys are a standard key set, not a heavy ring of keys. ford repair notes: confirmed complaint - ran electrical test - no codes stored - checked all grounds and connections - contacted techline - ran diagnostics per techline - found internal failure in ignition switch due to worn push pin - removed and replaced ignition switch and retested part replaced 1 au5z*11582*b cylinder ignition repair solved the issue. made at 61000mi the first ford i went to for this problem was in sevierville, tn. i paid for diagnostics, but no codes. i expressed concern that the problem was related to the ignition since i had seen a similar recall on gm vehicles. ford said would charge labor time to recreate the problem. i was then able to recreate problem in lot by touching keys. i alerted service desk and waited 20 min with engine running for a technician to come and witness the problem. they finally sent the girl that works the service counter who said turn it off and we will pull it into the bay and have a technician try to recreate it in the morning, confirming they would charge labor time to recreate the problem. she was very rude and told me no technician was going to come out and that i could leave the car or not, then stormed inside. i left without the problem resolved and made an appt. at the next closest dealership 40 miles away newport, tn. i was able to recreate the problem for the technician at the newport dealership. they were very nice and professional and performed the ignition repair quickly.
