POWER TRAIN:MANUAL TRANSMISSION

chrysler cross fire 2004. the manual transmission violently slips out of first gear into neutral after the car is moving the vechile and the clutch is disengaged. albeit infrequently. this causes a very dangerous situation, crossing traffic that isn't controlled via a sign or light. or, at any stop with someone behind you. in the 1,500 miles i've driven the car since i purchased it, i have narrowly avoided being rear-ended three times due to this problem. the dealership's service personnel have observed and verified the tendancy of it to slip from gear, (however chrysler stars reponded that the problem wasn't frequent enough to repair). leaving each start into traffic is the chance of a collision.*ak

WHEELS:RIM

i have a 2004 crossfire. i took the vehicle in for an oil change and rear tire exchange (sold with michelin sports and had to purchase continental all season for midwest winter driving) that i had three bent rims on the vehicle. the bent rims were two on front and one rear. the damage according to the dealer tech was probably due to "potholes". my issue is 1) what constitutes normal driving? potholes are a normal factor in life with the us road system. 2) the technician stated that the bent wheel was an issue with the low profile tires used on crossfire and sebring products. i have not found any reports on this, so am using this mechanism to file formal product report on wheel reliability and safety. i travel 45 miles one way on interstate driving. what can happen with bent wheels at 70 mph? the wheels cost $ 400+ for the front and $ 500 plus for the rear. does the consumer have to continually pay for poor design? *jb

daimler chrysler have issued a recall to all merc brand cars for a voltage regulator check and replacment. the crossfire has the exact same system as the slk but has not been included in the recall, there are dozens of cases where the lights dim at stop lights and at idle where it is clearly down to the voltage not being regualted. dc have brushed aside my complaints.

its two things. i think because of one failure, it has caused another. the electronic system and over voltage, the failure of the voltage regulator in the alternator, i believe has caused the problems with the drivetrain (automatic transmission, and the hydrolic braking system) i have noticed significant pressure loss when applying brakes. in addition to that, when coming to a stop the car jerks back and forth in while in 1st or 2nd gear , as if the clutch wasn't engaging. however i could get that to jerking to stop if i applied the brakes really hard. 3-d wouldn't jerk, however it would slam down into the lower gears when coming to the stop. the electrical problem started happening back in october. the trans, and hydrolic issues just started happening may 23, 2005.

the vehicle was being driven on the interstate with the cruise control set. upon approaching an exit, the brakes were applied and the car lurched forward. the brakes were applied again and the vehicle accelerated at a high rate of speed. after several successive attempts to brake the vehicle, the cruise control was finally overridden. the dealership where the vehicle was obtained replaced the switch that governs the cruise control and braking system. this switch failed, which caused the vehicle to accelerate when the brakes were applied. according to the dealership's service department, this occurred because the vehicle identified the braking as climbing a grade and it was accelerating in order to maintain the speed at which the cruise was set.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

auto/transmission/electrical system. i'm just so glad that this is a drive by wire car, especially when the cars electrical system can't regulate its voltage properly. you would think that daimler would have the electrical system built as tough as nails. seeing that the cars life support is all dependent upon pulse power. so my complaint is do to the cars failure to regulate its power, it cooked my transmissions drive plate located internally on top of the valve body. then surged back to the transmission control module & fried that. and some how, and i can't figure out why this occurred but, the internal gears inside my throttle body got fused together. this is strange to me seeing that the gears are made out of a composite. so with all that has occurred it has left the car lifeless for over 90 days now. i have contacted chrysler corp. offices through there website, pleading with them to exchange the broken pieces. they only responded with "contact you dealer" so i have sent multiple "parts and service requests" to the two dealerships that i can go to. one is a " " five star dealership, and the other is not. i never once got a response from either one. daimler said take it to the dealership, so i replied "the car does not drive", so again i requested a parts exchange, and again the same stock response "contact your dealer"...bla bla. i am more than qualified to install all parts that are needed to be replaced. i guess the rumors are all try, about chrysler turning their backs on customers once the car has been sold. all i know is i am not paying for this, or heads will roll. *jb

AIR BAGS:FRONTAL

i was in a car accident on july 24, 2005 where i rear-ended a buick rendezvous in my chrysler crossfire. i did extensive damage to the front end of my crossfire and there was no airbag deployment on the crossfire. i sustained minor seat belt injuries on my shoulder and across my stomach. i did call chrysler to let them know that the airbags did not deploy on the car and they stated they would have the car and accident investigated. i learned later that the reason the airbags did not deploy on the crossfire was that the release for the front airbags is in the frame of the vehicle and the only way to deploy them is to bend the frame of the vehicle. this is a major failure in that the crossfire has such a low profile that there are very few cars that you could be in an accident with and then have the airbags to deploy. *jb

i get my x-fire maintained at maplewood dodge -chrysler dealership service center in maplewood nj. i first took in for new brakes in nov. 2005 and also asked them to check the rear right wheel because it was making a metal rattle noise when i go over bumps. they told me that they had to order a right front strut. they called me and said that they had to replace the front strut and released it to me. jan 3, 2006, i returned to the service center with the same noise problem. they kept my car for 7 days. i was told that they had to order a rear strut for my car. i asked why did they replace the front strut. i was told that they did not replace it, they just ordered it. (first lie) three 3 days in on jan 6, 2006 i asked about my car and service rep chuck said "what's up bro. i asked about the status of my vehicle. he said "if it was ready i'd called you". yes i'm a black man, but i am not his bro. i am a customer. i made a complaint to the service manager al. nothing was done. i came back on tue. jan. 10, 2005. while waiting to talk to al the manager, he was talking to the mechanic who assigned to work on my car and chuck. unknowing of my presence, al say to them that he needed them to look into what is going on with the white crossfire, the customer has been in a rental for close too 5 days. the mechanic say "so, that is not my problem". that is a problem! i ask chuck, exactly what is wrong with my car. he look at me and said "i don't know" i ask, did any one look at my car, because everytime i call here you tell me that they are working on it. he then called the mechanic and i ask him what part is being ordered for my car if any. i looked at chuck then me and said "i don't know". no one there could tell me why they had my car for 5 days or what part is being ordered or if any needed to be ordered. then the person assigned to work on my car said "i'm not even qualified to work on that car. now it is wed. jan. 11, 2006 and i still don't have my car. *jb

i own a 2004 chrysler crossfire. as i was driving through the city yesterday 07/30/07 i made a right hand turn onto a cross street and suddenly my steering locked. i was able to stop just inches from a parked car. the steering wheel would only move slightly to the left. i exerted some force to the wheel in the left hand direction and suddenly it broke loose and became free again, at the same time the airbag warning light on the dashboard came on. i carefully drove the car to a dealer where i was informed that the clockspring had broken and jammed the steering column. the dealer says they have never seen a clockspring break on this type of car. the car is to be repaired 08/01/07, at a cost to me of $350.00, and i have requested that they give me the old parts. this car is one of very few produced and it only has about 22,000 miles on it. it scares me to think what might have happened had this occurred at highway speeds, and i would like to know if this could happen again, or if it has happened to others.

i purchased a used 2004 crossfire 8/15/2007 (yesterday) at 47k, great condition. right off the back, it was difficult to turn the key in the ignition. the wheel was hard to turn and really hard to get the car started. i drove home, because the dealer guy started the car for me, right then i should have questioned the situation. later that night i took the car out and was stuck in a parking lot for 2 hours. had to get a cab home, get my fiance to come help me turn the key. he couldn't do it either. we finally seeked help from 2 guys and one was able to finally turn the key. got home, and was not able to turn it again. i fear that the steering wheel will always do this and what if it locks while driving, like the other complaint i read. the dealer said they will pick up the car today and take a look at it. *jb

STRUCTURE

design of vehicle did not allow for camber adjustment to front tires unless a weld is cut and a new piece is installed. therefore, over time the camber of the tires can became such that the front tires wear on the inside edge that cannot be seen by the owner of the vehicle during a normal walk around inspection. this places the owner of the vehicle in a position that a tire which appears to be in good condition when inspected, may blow out without notice when at highway speeds. it would seem that a manufacturer's design that requires a weld to be cut and a new part installed at a later date to allow for a simple tire alignment adjustment and may lead to a potential tire failure until discovered by the owner, is not a vehicle design which incorporates a high degree of safety engineering.

the problem is same as below. hyundai is recalling 91,202 my 2002-2003 hyundai sonata vehicles. repeated use of the interior door handle may cause wear of the chrome plate. if the top edge of the handle has very thin chrome plating, that portion of the plating may wear away more easily than more thickly plated areas as the door handle is used. the worn chrome plating on the upper edge of the handle may result in a crack or separation between the chrome plating on the inboard and outboard surfaces of the handle, which may form a sharp edge. 2004 chrysler crossfire.

TIRES

i am finding it hard to shed light on safety issues involving poorly manufactured tires. i have been corresponding with continental tire north america regarding their general branded tires that i purchased on march 19, 2009. i have had problems with these tires since then and have tried in vain to have the tire installers replace them. i then escalated it in february with continental and they have been lackadaisical with their approach to this issue. the tires are of poor built quality, unreliable, extremely noisy and the ride quality is terrible. i emailed them several times pointing to the fact the these tires sound and feel unsafe, it sways my vehicle all over the highway and after inspection by a reputable tire dealer at continental's request it showed that the tires are poor tires and my vehicle has no mechanical fault that would contribute to the poor ride quality. continental's only response is to provide only 50 % of the front tires alone and nothing for the rears. in other words they don't care if i already spent 700 bucks on their crappy tires they want me to pay more to replace them. i am just an average consumer trying to hold big companies accountable and they refuse to acknowledge a legitimate complaint. i have provided for continental the countless negative reviews of their tires that point to the same issue of instability on the roadway, poor build quality and loud road noise. i have had to ride my motorcycle on most occasions because i am afraid to drive my car with those tires.

ignition problem turning the key to start my 2004 crossfire. there are times it is taking 10 to 15 minutes to start my car. i have to keep jiggling the steering wheel and repeatedly turning the key to get it to finally turn to start my vehicle. i am seeing other complaints about the same problem and believe this is a defect that chrysler should be addressing. i also now am wondering reading the other complaints if there may be a problem with the steering lock system that will cause a problem while driving. since i am experiencing the trouble now with starting my vehicle i don't want to have problem with this locking while driving. i will be contacting the dealership in my area to see what needs to be done to fix this issue. i believe something needs to be addressed with this because being a women i don't won't to be stranded because of this issue that i feel is a defect in the design. i don't believe at 46,000 miles i should be having this issue.

the skreem (sentry key remote entry module?) failed while my daughter was pumping gas. evidently, the car cannot be started if this module is not functioning properly, thus leaving my 17 year old stranded. after much research, mostly via crossfireforum.org, it appears as though this part has an extremely high failure rate. my understanding is that the engine and components are essentially the same as the mercedes slk and that mercedes recalled the compatible module, but chrysler didn't. moreover, this particular part can only be ordered and programmed by a chrysler dealership, which means no options and big bucks! please look into and monitor past and future complaints concerning this poorly designed/manufactured essential component in the chrysler crossfire. thank you for your time and effort on our behalf.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

this is a common problem on 1000's of crossfire's and mercedes (all models from 1998 forward). this issue is the bas system and brakes. intermittingly, and usually during warmer weather when applying the brakes the bas light comes on, as does the light indicator. the issue is that the brake lights do not come on. there is a fault where if the bas is not working, the brake lights do not come on. they are tied together in the electronics. the bas is not required to stop the vehicle, however no brake lights because of the fault is extremely unsafe. the vehicle cannot be driven. research online has found 1000's of complaints, no resolution and typically hundreds or thousands in repair costs that do not fix the issue. the brake lights should run independently of the bas system. a common fix is connecting an inline fuse from the brake switch to the brake light, if one is mechanically inclined to do so. contacting mb states they know the issue but cannot determine the cause they also stated too costly to change the system for a % of owners. other car manufacturers have brake lights wired separately from bas systems.
