safety recall notice concerning the chevrolet hd2500 silverado loading of passenger and bed weight of the vehicle. a notice and door jam sticker was supplied by gm to correct the capacity of the vehicle by approximately 300 pounds due to tire selection and/or rims. i am not satisfied with the recall and wish to know more about the recall. on the letterhead, it is noted that this is a "safety recall notice" as opposed to a mis-labeling of the vehicle from the factory. vin number of the 2006 silverado is [xxx]. i believe that gm should step up and offer the customer an explanation for the recall and instead of reducing the weight capacity of the vehicle in lieu of actually fixing the problem, either by replacing the tires and/or rims. i have contacted gm and the representative would not share anymore information that what was stated in the recall notice. he recorded the phone call and said it will be sent to the "dissatisfied" customer internally with gm. i don't expect to receive a call due to legal reasons. *nm updated 07/16/2012 *js information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

starting 4 days after delivery of this new light duty truck with diesel engine and 6 speed heavy duty automatic transmission, the transmission has almost continually malfunctioned, causing what i believe are dangerous conditions putting myself, my passengers, other drivers, and pedestrians at risk. the malfunctions include acting like in neutral when starting from a full stop, causing the engine to rev, and then the transmission suddenly engages causing the vehicle to lurch, similar problems at the transmission searches for higher gears, even at highway speeds; the engagements are so hard i believe i am at risk should this occur on low traction roads, or on curves. most disturbing is that moments after coming to a full stop (foot off accelerator), the transmission suddenly (on no fewer than 10 occasions) sends a surge of power to the drive wheels causing the vehicle to lurch. i am fearful that this malfunction may cause the vehicle to be propelled into a vehicle in front of my, or worse, pinning a pedestrian between this vehicle and a fixed object. also shocking is that upon the vehicle being returned to me for the 3rd time on august 11th, within an 1/8 of a mile form the dealership, as i approached a stop the vehicle wheels suddenly locked up for a moment. i returned to the dealership and the service manager drove the vehicle. he repeatedly duplicated the problem and experimented by shifting into neutral, shockingly, while in neutral, the transmission still seemed to engage the drive wheels as we approached a stop. only 42 days since delivery, and the vehicle has been at the dealer for service for 13 days, and has also continued to malfunction while under my control another 12 days. i believe the dealer, auto manufacturer, and the transmission manufacturer (who is said to be providing direct instruction to the dealer on diagnostics and repair) are placing me and others at serious risk of injury. *nm

vehicle sat at the airport for 72hrs. when i left the airport, the brakes felt spongy, but were able to stop the vehicle. on the freeway as i was braking, the brakes began to feel more spongy, requiring increased stopping distance. when i arrived at my residence approximately 45 miles from the airport, i tried to turn into my driveway, only to find i had lost all power steering assist and braking assist. i was able to finally turn in, but had to use my emergency brake to come to a full stop. once, stopped, i found i could not turn the steering wheel and there were no brakes. i opened the power steering reservoir cap, which immediately spewed a few ounces of p/s fluid over the engine compartment, fortunately not on the hot exhaust. dealer had the vehicle towed 2 miles to their dealership where they claimed they could not duplicate the problem. however, they did keep it over night and decide to change a p/s pressure relief valve even though they could not duplicate anything. i filed a complaint to gm without anyone taking this serious safety issue as a real problem. this safety issued must be addressed and the root cause must be found before serious injury/death occurs due to this problem.

STEERING:COLUMN

i have a 2006 chevrolet silverado that has presented a problem in the steering assembly of the vehicle. i noticed a moaning noise that was present while turning to the right. i brought this up to the dealer in my area and they informed me that my problem was my steering box was leaking and needed replacement. i went ahead with the suggested repair. this however did not fix my problem. i brought the truck back, they examined it and told me to replace the power steering pump as it was leaking and that should take care of it. i did as suggested but still not fixed. mind you this was at 50,000 miles. i brought the truck back, examined it again, and this time was told that i needed to replace both tie rod ends and the idler arm to correct the problem. so i did as suggested. still not fixed. i took it back again, they examined it, and by this time the problem is getting worse, louder noise etc. they said, well the power steering control valve needed replacement, i agreed, they said this would do it. the dealer fixed half of it. now i have a high pitched noise under the hood and the remedy for that is to replace the steering box that i replaced 30,000 miles prior. i needed to hand over more money and in two and a half years i go through two steering boxes, so i called chevy and asked them if maybe they would help with the bill, they agreed to pay a portion, but that's not really good enough in my book. if they cant stand behind a steering box for 30,000 miles what's next. the dealer has also informed me that this does effect my braking as well as the truck idling irregularly. i am very dissatisfied with chevrolet and gm. when i wanted to take this to the next step with the company, they told me i should not spoil a good deal that they are offering, and if i do take it higher i was advised they might not be so kind to me. what a deal!!

vehicle almost hit garage due to pulsing of brakes during dry stop. an inspection revealed fluid leakage at the abs module under the cab. brake lines appear severely pitted and corroded. *kb

Reported in: HILTON NY || Crash: N || VIN #: 1GCHK29UX6E

SUSPENSION

the left rear shock absorber mount tore completely through and separated from the main axle housing. because the hydraulic brake line was mounted to the shock mount, when the mount failed, the shock absorber extended fully and ruptured the brake line to the left rear wheel. this resulted in a total loss of brakes while attempting to exit interstate highway 40 at 65 mph. at no time did the driver information center on the dash indicate a problem with the brakes. after using electric trailer brakes to slow and stop the vehicle combination, the vehicle was able to be moved to a parking area. upon shutting off the ignition, a notice came on the driver information center stating, "service brakes soon". upon examination, the master brake reservoir was down to approximately 50%. the left rear shock absorber, the brake line and the shock mounting bracket were all hanging approximately 4" above the pavement. the trailer being hauled was less than 1/2 of the rated tow weight and the vehicle had been operated on the interstate highway system for almost 5 weeks with no offroad or heavy hauling. when temporary repairs were made at a wingfoot truck center, the mechanic who welded the shockmount back to the axle housing indicated that he had seen two failures at the same point in the past 6 months. he thought that one was a 2007 gmc 2500 hd and my 2500 hd chevrolet diesel. according to the service manager at lenlyall chevrolet in aurora, co there was no failure of the braking system proportioning valve because none was present in the hydro brake system installed on the vehicle. all other shock mounts were examined and found to be ok. . at this time gm is refusing to take any further action due to the fact that repairs were already temporarily made.

SERVICE BRAKES

i was leaving the downtown area of cleveland, ohio, and i was in the lane to get onto 77 south. the light turned green, the 4-5 vehicles in front of me started going through the intersection, the first accelerated into the adjacent lane to reveal construction cones in our lane. the remaining vehicles in front of me slammed on their brakes and i slammed on mine. at that instant, my brake pedal sunk to the floor. i reacted quickly (thank god) and swerved left to avoid the collision. my truck came to rest about 10 feet past the small sedan in front of me. i would have wrecked the back of that car and caused a chain reaction in front and back of me had i not been able to react as quickly as i had. the replacement of all the brake lines (the one leaking is as corroded as the others) plus front brake work is going to cost me around $3800. not something i was expecting from a 6 year old truck, nor anything i can afford right now. it is my work truck, i don't have a choice, and it's more of a repair than i feel comfortable tackling on my own. chevy needs to step up and shoulder some responsibility. i have had two other trucks in this climate and never saw the lines corrode like this. *tt

SERVICE BRAKES

i purchased 2006 silverado new and after the 1st year noticed rusting. just before it came off warranty (2009) the coolant line from the radiator and the brake rotors (front and rear) had rusted through. have since replaced the rotors again and now my brake line burst open as i was driving home. entire undercarriage is rusted (frame is peeling up in layers), there is rust coming through the bumpers, on the wheels, in the bed, inside the driver's door - basically everywhere i look (i filed a complaint with chevrolet in 2010 about the excessive rusting and was told, after inspection by local dealer, that there was "no abnormal rusting found"). i baby this truck (it only has 26,000 miles and is not driven on the roads when they are salted) and keep it very clean. i am afraid for my safety as i do not know what is going to fail next. today i spoke with chevrolet again about the brake lines, again inspected at the local dealer, and was told that it was "normal wear and tear" and caused by environmental conditions. in addition, i was told that the rotors and calipers are rusted through and must be replaced. how is it possible to conclude that the corrosion is due solely to environmental factors and not at all due to material choice and lack of appropriate coating? i am only asking that they cover the replacement of the brake lines and they do not feel obligated to do so. they do not believe it is poor design or subpar materials. (neither of my other two vehicles, 1993 toyota pickup and 2004 volvo, show rusting of the undercarriage to the same degree as the silverado and the brake lines of both other vehicles are completely intact. all three vehicles have been subjected to the same environmental conditions.)

as i approached a stop sign, i applied the brakes and the brake pedal went soft and then to the floor. immediately followed by a brake system warning and a brake light on the instrument panel. i got the vehicle stopped on the side of the road and checked the brake fluid reservoir. it was empty. it had been snowing that day and i noticed a puddle of fluid had formed in the fresh snow under the driver's side of the vehicle, just inboard and aft of the front left wheel. when i crawled underneath and looked i found what appears to be severely rotted brake lines. i have never had a solid brake line fail on me before and was quite shocked at how progressed the corrosion was. i take care of my truck and it gets washed and serviced regularly. with that it gets used as a truck as well. i feel that the corrosion was excessive and perhaps is the result of a material flaw/cheap materials used. i shudder to think what the outcome would have been had i been towing my horse trailer or my camper that day.

SERVICE BRAKES

i was in fast lane on highway approaching some construction and was cut off by someone who passed me on the right . i stepped hard on my brakes and the pedal went all the way to the floor . . i hit the person in front of me and ruined my front bumper. upon inspection of my vehicle i noticed brake fluid dripping from frame rail . .i looked and noticed a line ruptured due to rust / rot and all the brake lines where in bad condition . i was able to crutch the truck to a repair shop and the repaired the steel line. mechanic made me aware of the terrible condition all the steel lines were in ( fuel lines, transmission lines,ect) and that the brake bleeders on front calipers where also rotted beyond saving . . i believe all these lines should have been stainless steel as they are exposed to the elements and i'm lucky to have not totaled the truck , injured someone else and or myself

SERVICE BRAKES

my wife while driving the above truck stated that the brake peddle "felt funny" and continued to drive it. she stated that she had almost completely lost the ability to stop. when i was able to inspect the truck i found a ruptured brake line that lead to the rear brakes. also all the brake fluid had leaked out of the ruptured line. i have since have had all the brake lines replaced with stainless steel lines. i am learning that this is an on going issue with this model of truck and my concern should be obvious. my wife could have seriously injured herself or others.
