chevrolet silverado 1500 2009 Complaints

STRUCTURE:BODY

i have a 2009 chevy silverado 1500 crew 4x4. i recently had collision backing out of a parking space. i collided with a toyota camry backing out of a space on the opposite side aisle. we basically hit rear corner to rear corner. my complaint is the extent of damage to the truck on such a low speed collision. visual damage: right bumper end (3 piece outer bumper) is bent in and up slightly. rear of bed side panel is bent in and up slightly rear light is cracked there is a dent(buckle) in the bed side panel above the wheel well, about the size of a hand. 3 estimates: (1 dealer, 1 private shop, 1 gm preferred collision center) parts needed; new rear bumper new bumper re inforcement new tail light new truck bed side panel.(yes, the whole side panel!) estimates for damage repairs; $2600 dealer $2600 private $3200 gm authorized collision center about 50/50 parts & labor this does not include a trailer hitch brace that is most likely bent. due to liability of potential failure, all say if this even looks damaged, will require replacement. add $400. dealer and gm collision center gen mgr say the bumper design of the new silverado body style "sucks"! the center section of the bumper can take direct, flush ipact just fine. the end sections will be destroyed in even a low speed impact. the killer is the damage to the side bed panels. because the rear of panel is a single wall of sheet metal, un reinforced, it buckles like fabric at even the lightest touch. you could bend it in by hand if you push hard enough. since there is no way to pull out this panel due to its un reinforced sheet metal design, the most cost effective repair is to replace the whole panel. they sell the truck cheap! they make a fortune on replacement parts because of the cheap design quality. word to the wise: get the rear backing sensors! it will save you $3000. it wouldn't help in my case as i still had another moving vehicle. no fault collision.

STEERING

vehicle was struck by a motorcycle traveling around 50mph in the drivers side front tire. this is a 4 wheel drive vehicle. the motorcycle was only a 50cc model small motorcycle. this resulted in the spindle breaking in two at the point just behind where the tie rod end connects resulting in a loss of steering on that wheel. luckily the silverado was only traveling approximately 25 mph at the time of the accident and was safely stopped in a short distance. this is a heavy duty part and should not have broken. the tie rod should have broken first.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

vehicle caught fire after being parked for 2.5 or so hours in driveway. determined by fire marshall to have started from a ecm in right front dash area. fire department responded and extinguished fire with water instead of foam because "foam tank was not operational at that time". no repairs have yet been made to the vehicle due to outstanding insurance investigation.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC

the brake pedal back pressure is weak, spongy or soft when applied. the brake pedal goes to floor board further than normal/ traditional of all manufacturer vehicle models through out past decades of production. have to pump this vehicles brake pedal more than twice in order to obtain sufficient brake pedal pressure necessary to achieve control of vehicle's brakes. for unexpected braking, the current braking system on 1500 silverado chevrolets is inadequate for the average driver which possibly will result with harm to others and vehicle.

TIRES

i have a 2009 silverado crew cab that came with goodyear eagle ls-2 tires--dot m62a bcer. also, my silverado came with a tire monitoring system. on 1 may 2010 i was driving in a residential area of wylie, texas, very slowly, probably around 5 mph because there were cars parked on both sides of the street and people standing by their vehicles talking. immediately after passing between the cars the rear driver¿s side back tire collapsed, apparently a blowout. i called my insurance roadside assistance that changed my tires. i asked the man who changed my tires if he had a compressor on his tow truck, and he did. because he or i neither one could see any nails nor anything else protruding into the tire, i asked him to air the tire up. he aired the tire up and immediately said here is your problem¿air blowing out of the side of the tire. i looked the road over where the tired collapsed, but found nothing. twenty minutes earlier i was traveling on u.s. 75 in plano, texas going 60 mph in heavy traffic. my silverado will let me know if my tires are low. i had no warning before there was an apparent blowout. the tire had 27,700 miles, plus or minus a couple of miles, at the time it collapsed. the tire had good thread and had been routinely rotated. the tire monitoring system let me know when i put the spare on that i should check the tire. i have notified goodyear of this incident.

i hear a high pitched whining noise under the hood. varies with engine rpm, vehicle can be parked and you'll still hear it. only happens in extreme cold situations, usually sub zero. i live in fairbanks. other than the noise, vehicle operates just fine. it can be quite loud. this problem is intermittent. haven't been able to make it to the dealership while it's happening. dealership suggested changing the heat setting from floor/dash to just floor. that fixes it. apparently this isn't enough info for them as they don't know what to fix. i wanted this on record in the event something broke just after it went out of warranty. currently approaching 25k miles on the truck.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

i have a 2009 chevrolet silverado 1500. the cruise control does not slow down the vehicle on grades or ever small slopes. the vehicle free rolls as fast as you will let it in over drive, 3rd gear, 1st or 2nd. there is no engine breaking at all. gm says this is proper operation for the vehicle, and there is no software or mechanical fix for this problem. i have a 2004 of the same model and it works perfectly, with very effective speed control. this is very unsafe, and actually in my opinion cannot be considered to be cruise control at all. my dealership told me this is an ongoing complaint, that gm will not acknowledge as a definite defect in design. the same day my vehicle was being examined, the local police had one of their trucks of the same model year in the shop with the same complaint. i have not had an accident, but cannot use this option on the vehicle, i can only ride my breaks down slopes to slow the vehicle down.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

i purchased this vehicle new from classic chevrolet in grapevine, tx in january 2010. the first few months i had the vehicle, i had no problems. starting in march 2010 i noticed that my radio(navigation system) would sound like it would short out intermittently. i didn't really think anything of it. i thought that it had to be the radio station or interference with other wireless signals. i never really thought it would become a problem until recently. on 5/5/2012, i was traveling 70mph at night down the highway when, all of a sudden, my entire electrical system seemed like it was "resetting" itself multiple times. from door locks to instrument cluster, to navigation system, to even headlights, everything cycled more than 3 or 4 times in rapid succession. i was merely driving down the road, i hadn't just touched anything, i was just cruising along. after doing some research online, it is apparent that this is a common issue among this design of the silverado. forum after forum has owners describing this same issue and more problems with the electrical system. it is a major safety concern that could end up killing someone. headlights and running lights that turn off without cause? what if the airbag system is affected and it causes a premature airbag deployment while someone is traveling at a high rate of speed? this is not and isolated issue and the government needs to step in to force general motors to recall this vehicle along with any other vehicles with the same issue. it is my understanding that general motors may be aware of the issue because the 2011 and 2012 silverados have had design changes made to their electrical systems.(i read this in forums as well.)

STRUCTURE

my 2009 chevrolet silverado was parked for two days. it was running perfectly up until it was parked..after two days of being parked in the rain, the rear tail light suddenly went on by itself. i opened the door to the vehicle to see how this could happen and the "service engine soon" light was on. i put the key into the ignition and it was totally dead. i opened the hood and lifted off the fuse panel cover, because there was a strong smell of burning. then, there was smoke. i immediately disconnected the battery and had the vehicle towed to the nearest dealer. after picking it up today, they charged me $1555 to repair, yet could not provide a logical reason why this happened! they said"corrosion" in the fuse panel. how could a vehicle made in 2009 with 72,000 miles have a problem such as this without a major issue being wrong? i fear for other's safety,as i believe there is a serious issue going on. per my research, there is a technical service bulletin that explains the problem. pit-5090. there is an issue with water being allowed to enter the fuse panel box due to poor design and the poor installation from the factory of a rubber seal. very serious issue! please investigate!!! i have defective parts in my possession and can provide pictures if needed! should be recalled or owners should have their vehicle inspected asap.

STRUCTURE:BODY

2009 chevy silverado crew cab passenger dash cracked right in between airbag. really concerned if airbag is engaged/deployed the dash will interfere or cause harm or bodily injury due to cracked dash pieces to become projectiles into the cab. filed complaint with chevy gmc they wont fix it under warranty but will charge a goodwill fee. prices vary from dealership to dealership depending on location. i am very concerned that this is a mass phenomena and a safety hazard.

AIR BAGS

vehicle was parked for the day while i worked. entered and started vehicle, the vehicle message center indicated "service airbags" message. the message would come and go which made it difficult for the dealer to determine the problem. in november of 2013 the service airbag message stayed on, took vehicle in and had the front passanger side airbag sensor replaced. this resolved the problem. one month later (december 2013) the same thing happened and it turned out to be the front drivers side airbag sensor. had the sensor replaced, resolved the problem.
