chevrolet silverado 1500 2006 Complaints

TIRES

we were driving down the interstate at 75 mph and had a rear tire blowout for no apparent reason other than a possible tire defect. we did not hit anything. we quickly slowed and got off the road. the tire side wall blew out. the tires are new and had less than 3000 miles on them. *jb

TIRES:SIDEWALL

driving at low speed in downtown macon, right front tire blew out. sidewall had 0.5 inch slit and obviously was beginning to "separate" (i could see what looked like a thread). tires were just balanced/rotated week of april 10, 2006. tread looks ok. could see "deterioration" around entire tire sidewall above lettering and below tread. inspected the inner side of the tire wall and noticed same deterioration in same area (rubber was cracked in defined area completely around the tire). *nm

EQUIPMENT

2006 chevrolet silverado 1500 extended 0.5 ton: spear-tire lowering device. the plastic tube from bumper to square lowering nipple does not align. when inserting rode into tube you cannot connect with nipple. after 25 min. if fishing around for connection one person must crawl under the vehicle, look through small hole in rim of the spare-tire and with the third link of crank rode push the tube up and have the other person make the crank to nipple connection. the tube was not broken just too flexible and was out of alignment by at least 2 inches. one person far from any help like we were would be in trouble. also, there needs to be a flat metal contact pad on the rear axle that the jack top can rest on. the jack top is almost flat and seeing it resting on a round axle is unsettling. the jack need to also extend at least 1 inch more then it does because at full height the tire barely went on. we could have repositioned the jack further down the axle to get more height. *nm

TIRES

i have a brand new 2006 chevy silverado pickup and it came with p265/70r/17 goodyear wrangler st tires. at 2700 miles the right rear tire went flat while traveling on a paved road and at 5500 miles the left front tire went flat while traveling on a graveled road. both tires had cuts in the center of the tires and were very similar. i complained to goodyear and they won't do anything about this unsafe tire. *nm

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:CRUISE CONTROL

our new 2006 chevrolet ck1500 4x4 extended cab pick up truck has a cruise control defect that chevrolet dismisses as normal. when you are driving using the cruise control and start up a hill the truck slows down at least 10 miles an hour then suddenly without warning the cruise control system jolts the truck forward trying to compensate for the loss of speed. this is startling to say the least. it has happened to us going up hills and around hilly curves. if i did not keep both hands on the wheel i very well could have lost control and crashed. i have met one other person who owns a chevrolet suv and he told me he has the same problem. he simply stated that he "just doesn't use the cruise control". i think chevrolet is fudging the truth to tell me it is normal and has to do with gear ratios when i have had numerous vehicles which do not commit this activity. the dealer has been very helpful concerning this matter and i do not hold him to fault. i do believe that corporate gm has a stake in covering up a problem of this nature that could have devastating potential. some one will lose control of a vehicle somewhere due to this occurrence and someone will lose their life. *jb

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:DRUM

dt*: the contact stated the vehicle that was purchased on 06/16/06 was equipped with poor quality brakes in the rear. the vehicle was also equipped with disc brakes in the front and drum brakes in the rear. the contact expressed that the same model from years 2000-2004 was equipped with standard disc brakes in the front and rear, which provide better braking power than drum brakes. the contact suggested that the vehicle should have been equipped with the standard 4 wheel disc brakes since the vehicle is a newer model.

LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:DOORS:LATCH

the 2006 silverado only provides two options for auto door locks (1. in gear 2. at speed). prior to 2005 there was a third option for "no auto door lock or disable". besides being a huge inconvenience to many owners it is potentially a safety issue if you need to exit the truck in an emergency and the vehicle has locked all of the doors for you. let the owner decide which program to use based on their own needs and preferences. *nm

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH

dt*: the contact stated that while turning the key to the accessory position, the vehicle was able to be taken out of park without applying the foot brake. the manufacturer was consulted, who determined the vehicle was purposely designed in that manner. the contact expressed that while the ignition was in accessory position a child was able to take the vehicle out of park without applying the foot brake. as a consequence, the vehicle rolled down the driveway and across the street.

TIRES

i bought a 06 chevy silverado pickup in june 06. the truck has 1800 miles on it and it has a bad vibration at any speed over 30 mph. i have brought the truck back to the dealer 4 times and each time they rebalance the tires. the last time i was there they let 5 lbs of air out of each tire. they are now telling me that it is "the nature of the beast" and the tires have to get broke it before the vibration will stop. the truck has general ameritrac p245/70/r17 tires on it. i took the truck to a local tire dealer and was told that the tires are out of round and loping causing the vibration in the truck. the dealer keeps giving me the saying they are waiting for the chevrolet factory rep to come there. i an afraid to drive the truck with this vibration as i am unable to walk and use a wheelchair and i don't want to be broke down someplace with this truck. what can i do to get this problem resolved? *nm

OTHER

i bought a 2006 silverado ext cab lt3 at the end of february 2006. in march headliner came down. replaced two weeks later. six weeks later headliner came down again the second time. replaced headliner one week later. two days after replacing headliner, it came down the third time. i contacted area rep to have him research the headliner issue (which i already went to two other dealerships and they are selling these trucks with the defected headliners and knowingly selling them). i waited a full month then went for another replacement which took two weeks to come in. one week later headliner coming down again the 4th time. area rep said he put in a tsb to show it is a defect that the headliners are cut too short. i checked on nhtsa and no tsb's are listed about a silverado headliner. people haven't noticed this because it isn't obvious. you have to look at the top of your open doors where the headliner meets the rubber gasket and you will see the cut of the fabric of the headline and the molded headliner piece with it. i've called area rep and it's been 3 days and no return call. i was told it has nothing to do with the factory sunroof either. if the factory knows the headliner's are defective why do they keep sending the ones that are defective instead of waiting till the right ones come out? *jb

when i turn the steering wheel normally from left to right i hear a clicking noise as i turn. the service manager at the dealership stated that there is a ring in the steering column that works with the airbag. he stated that it cannot be fix and that is the way it is. when i told him that other sliverado's that i drove did not make the noise he said that some are louder than others but there's nothing he can do the fix it. could the ring be defective? if so will it affect the airbag? *jb

SUSPENSION

i have a new 2006 chevrolet silverado 1500, regular cab, long bed. it has a pretty bad vibration at various speeds, but it is mostly at higher speeds, say 50 and up. the dealer has balanced the tires three times and condition remains. i told them something is out of balance. they told me the truck has a known condition called "beam shake." i have had two other similar trucks and they did not have this problem. i feel a vibration at high speed is unsafe and can lead to a dangerous situation either directly, or indirectly, by way of a failure of a part, or loss of control of the vehicle. *jb

POWER TRAIN

the manual transmission on my 2006 chevrolet silverado 1500 has a problem. when the clutch is pressed you can not shift, or it is very difficult to shift gears. and the dealers service department says chevrolet designed all standard transmission vehicles to work this way. they say there is not anything to fix. i believe that since the transmission is hard to shift the transmission could wear out too fast, or and this is my big fear, the transmission could fail while the truck is being driven and a accident could happen, or the truck could break down in an unsafe place or time. i have had the truck in the service department at the dealer many, many times. the service advisor agrees that the truck doesn't shift like any standard transmission he has driven either. yet, the official word is that this is normal, and there is nothing to fix. he says all the manual transmission silverado trucks shift this way. how dangerous!!! if someone is driving and needs to shift, yet the engine will not shift, there could be a wreck, the trucks transmission could fail, and leave a person stranded in a very dangerous part of town. i have the extended warranty, however, what comfort is that, if the trick has been designed for failure. this problem shortens the life of the truck. *nm

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE

i purchased a brand new 2005 chevrolet silverado 1500 in may, 2006. i had no trouble with the vehicle.. until october 27. i had 3800 miles on the truck. i had filled my gas tank just out of san francisco and drove approximately 60 miles just out side of calistoga, california northbound on hwy 29. a winding, uphill mountainous road, single lane traffic except for a few passing lanes and turn-outs. i was driving up an incline. i noticed smoke wisping behind the cab. almost immediately, the truck died... red indicators on. fortunately, it died right at a wide passing lane location, and i veered to the right, blocking one of two northbound lanes. i got out of the truck and saw serious smoke and some flame coming from under the bed of the truck, up between the cab and the front of the bed. a vehicle behind me, evidently saw it already and pulled over to assist. another vehicle, driving southbound pulled over, had an extinguisher which i shot underneath the bed, but it did not help. at that point, i was concerned that the vehicle would blow up . there was an extreme fire danger in the area and there was a strong possibility that this could also turn into a forest fire. there was no stopping the fire . the truck was engulfed in flames. the calistoga fire department was enroute. the fire department arrived and doused the truck fire and a brush fire. california highway patrol showed up. secured the area for the fire department to neutralize any residual fires and the arrival of the tow truck. the truck was totally burned. a full blown raging truck fire, on a single lane highway in extremely dry conditions, in the middle of an area with blind turns in both directions. absolutely amazing. *jb

purchased 2006 chevrolet silverado 1/2 ton pickup truck new. at 2400 miles, i started experiencing a pulsating in the brakes that created a severe shimmy in the steering wheel when the brakes became warm. the dealer resurfaced the two front rotors. the problem continued. at 6500 miles, the dealer stated the drums were out of round and replaced them. at 13,000 miles, problem still persisted and dealer replaced front rotors. at 21,000 miles, the problem was still occurring and i inquired with a different dealer who test drove the truck and said they have had this problem with other vehicles, including the impala automobile and stated that there is no fix for the problem. in may of 2008, i placed a call directly to gm's customer service and received a return call from a gentleman who stated he was calling from argentina to respond to my complaint. all that accomplished was for him to arrange another appointment with the original dealership for another inspection. at 23,000 miles, the dealership suggested that when i am driving down a steep incline that gm advises i should use a lower gear to help reduce the vehicle speed and not create an overheated condition which they say was causing the vibration. the vibration occurs on level ground as well as coming down a hill and it is becoming increasingly more difficult to control the vehicle when this occurs and may lead to an accident if the brakes fail.

while trying to stop vehicle, while brake pedal engaged, brakes released and lost braking power, continuing to go forward with very limited ability to stop the vehicle. stopping of vehicle was achieved by continuing multiple times to re-engage the brakes each time the brakes released and lost power. dealership inspected and tested the brakes. they found both front abs sensors dropping out due to the same problem as the chevrolet recall for silverado models up to year 2002, corrosion in the braking system. they followed the procedure outlined in the recall. because my 2006 was not in the recall, i paid $165 for the work. i contacted chevrolet and they will not reimburse my expense unless they extend the recall. an internet search reveals other owners of silverados manufactured after 2002 are also having the problem. nhtsa should be pushing chevrolet to extend the recall because it is a very dangerous problem and it's not isolated to just a few vehicles.

please note mileage on this vehicle at time problems began was at 37,000. brake pedal was traveling to the floor at speeds below 10 mph causing abs light to come on and pedal to move up and down. more allowance in stopping distance was required. may 2010 - had to install new brake pads in the front and shoes in the rear. the rotors and slides were extremely corroded for a 4 year old vehicle with 37,000 miles. october 2011 took vehicle to gm certified service center for the continuing abs issue. corrosion was a main factor in causing the speed sensors to fail. diagnostic scan showed left wheel sensor bad. however, once replaced, they soon discovered right wheel sensor bad also. both sensors had to be drilled out due to corrosion. when the service department went to replace the right wheel sensor, the wheel sensor they had in stock was defective. defective parts in stock does say something about the product. the truck was kept overnight while a new "set" of wheel sensors was ordered. cost of diagnostic was $74.50. set of wheel sensors was $505. labor, tax and "misc charges" total $313.50 for a grand total of $893.19. the msrp on this vehicle at time of purchase was $34,000. our vehicles are garaged, kept clean. we are the sole owner of this truck. we do not live in chicago where we have to chip salt off our vehicles. this is the first vehicle we have ever experienced with this issue; therefore, we feel the parts are inferior and a recall should be in place. thank you. after talking with gm customer service center, there were recalls on older vehicles 1999-2005 (certain models) with the same issue, but nothing was noted on models from 2006 or newer. the gm certified service center stated that they do replace abs wheel sensors pretty frequently.

i was driving my 2006 chevy silverado 1500, 4-door. i had my wife and two children in the truck. when we got to our destination, my daughter could not open her door (rear driver side door). i confirmed the doors were unlocked by using the automatic lock/unlock feature i have on the drivers door. i tried to open the door from the outside, but it would not work. i tried to manually unlock the door from the inside, but the door would still not open. i brought it to the dealership and they told me the electronic latch had to be replaced. the dealership also told me they have had a number of problems with the latches which prevented the door from opening. this is obviously a safety issue.

at low speeds when coming to a stop, the abs will activate for no reason. apart from being an annoyance, this also causes a longer stopping distance which poses a hazard if there is another vehicle in front of you. the right sensor was replaced in 3/2011 and the left sensor was replaced in 11/2012. it seems odd that both would fail and judging by the number of complaints for the same issue listed on here and multiple other websites, i think it's time for gm to step up and admit a continued problem with this. there was a recall for this issue up to 2002, i think it's time it is extended.

SERVICE BRAKES

experienced braking failure and activation of anti-lock brakes when braking at low speeds. this causes longer braking times and distances and i have narrowly avoided hitting cars in front of me, running stop signs, etc. on numerous occasions. after researching this phenomenon, it is known as unintended low speed abs activation - a common problem for older model gm trucks. additional research has revealed that it is a common problem for 2006 silverados, yet it has yet to be addressed by the manufacturer. it is commonly the result of an increased air gap between the wheel speed sensor and hub reluctor ring due to rust and debris build up on the sensor mounting surface. this is a serious hazard that needs to be addressed for silverado trucks from rust-belt states.

i parked my truck in a bank parking lot after running errands. i went into the bank lobby, looked back, and noticed my headlights flashing. i returned to the truck, thinking i set off my panic alarm, only to find smoke filling the cabin. after the smoke cleared, i turned the ignition key to aux power and none of my electrical systems were working (e.g. windows, door locks, onstar, radio). after inspection, the chevy dealership found the main body wire harness had melted through from heat. the final analysis is that there is a short in the wire harness that caused the entire harness to melt. damage was limited to the harness and carpet because the short immediately drained the battery and did not allow the harness to heat up to a combustible temperature.

i was driving on the highway, and approaching a red light, stepped on the brakes. upon doing so, the brake pedal went to the floor. i was able to pump the pedal, and drive into the next parking lot. i walked around to the rear of the truck, where i saw a puddle of brake fluid. i looked under the truck, and saw the fluid leaking from a heavily corroded brake line. when i got the truck home, i did a more thorough inspection, and discovered that all the brake lines were heavily corroded, and would need replacement. i ordered an aftermarket, pre-bent stainless line kit. i took the truck to a local mechanic who was able to replace the leaking line, and a few others, but was unable to replace the lines going into the abs module due to their location on top of the frame, under the cab. i am able to drive the truck now, but will need to find another mechanic who is willing to separate the cab from the frame to replace the rest of the lines. i have owned many vehicles over the years, and none have ever had a corroded brake line. the last truck i owned was a 1993 chevy silverado, which i had for 15 years, and racked up 300,000 miles, with no brake or fluid line issues, and driven in the same northeast climate as the 2006 silverado. judging by the amount of complaints i have read online, describing the same problem i am experiencing, i believe gm should take responsibility for the repairs. this problem is a safety issue caused by what i believe to be the use of inferior materials.

AIR BAGS

the air bag service light and is lit as well as the service center saying it needs service, also has the same brake problems the 2007 and up silverados where recalled for with the failure of the front abs sensors. the abs problem could cause an accident at low speed because everytime you stop the abs system activates and pulses until stopped at 15 to 20 mph and increases stopping distance. the air bag light is because of a sensor failure in the front end area and requires replacement. from what i read on the internet these are well known safety issues with the model trucks. the other problems with the premature failure of brake lines that have corroded, and the check engine light being on for the ever well known problem of the vacuum solenoid near the full tank. these are constant problems with this yr and other models at gm. they should be recalled.

after picking up my 5yr old grandson, we came to a stop sign at a very busy intersection where the cross traffic is going about 50-60mph. when i applied the brakes the pedal went to the floorboard. i managed to depress the emergency brake just in time to keep from being hit by a semi truck going very fast. there were no warning lights or indication that there was a problem with the brakes. the dealer said the brake lines had rusted out and would need replacement. i contacted gm customer service and finally got to a cost assistance representative who informed me that gm would not help due to the age and mileage of the vehicle. really, the truck is 8 years old and otherwise in very good condition. also i don't understand how mileage affects a non-moving part.i believe the brake lines were made from inferior metal for this application. to me, the brake lines should be considered a safety item similar to the air bags. if brake lines are now expected to fail in vehicles 8 years or older i expect there will be a lot of injured or dead people due to this. after checking the internet for the same problem, i counted over 300 people who experienced the same issue on this vehicle. i believe gm should accept responsibility and correct this issue and reimburse those who have already had the lines replaced.

applied pressure to the brakes and they went to the floor with just a little catch. i was only doing about 25 mph and just so happened i was almost at my garage that works on it. (100 yards) i was able to turn in and coast to a stop. the brake line on the driver side underneath the driver and back of the master cylnder had rusted and ruptured. the master cylnder still had fluid in it when we checked it, so the rupture had just occured.i am having to replace all the lines. the vehicle has not been used by me in water situation except for normal driving in wet weather. when we tried to pump the brakes up, the fluid just poured out on the ground. that was when we determined the line was rusted and had burst when i applied the brakes luckily i was going slow and did not have to stop completely or i would have hit anything in front of me. i am having the steel lines replaced with stainless on the recommendation of my service center. (approx cost $1000.00) this incident was my first and only indication there was a brake problem. i consider myself very lucky that i was not in an accident and was not towing my trailer and tractor. using just plain steel brake lines in just inexcusable and irresponsible.

complete brake failure. after inspection by mechanic it was discovered that brake line had completely rusted apart in one area. all other brake lines were in a rusty state and mechanic feels that they are due to leak any time. complete replacement of all underbody brake lines will have to be done. chevrolet issued a similar recall for vehicles up to 2005. perhaps it is time for them to extend this recall. if i had not been an experienced driver (this is the primary vehicle for my 17 year old) i would have crashed. i was able to gear down and pull into a grassy field to slow the vehicle enough to engage the emergency brake.
