STEERING

on 3/5/10 at about 4pm i was traveling east bound on route 280 near newark exit. i was in the fast lane of a 3 lane highway. the middle lane was empty so i pulled into middle lane. a red pick up truck in the far right lane (slow lane) pulled into the middle lane. i assume i may have been in his blind spot. i had to pull back into the left lane. car locked up & i could not stop it from going left. i hit the cement barrier along shoulder. the witnesses all told me they could not understand why my car did not stop. itjust seemed to keep going left for no reason. i've heard through the news that chevy is issuing recalls for failed power steering in cobalt 2010. i've had this car 6 weeks and now its totaled. i could not pull it out of going left & it seems since it was 50 degrees that this was a steering failure. i was treated at the scene for abrasions & swelling to the face & arm. my neck & back are sore. i got a black eye from air bag. nj state trooper wrote a report.

STEERING

i bought a brand new 2010 cobalt lt that was built after the march 2010 recall for electric steering. so it came with the newly authorized electric steering unit. the steering didn't "go out" as many have experienced, but had an annoying pull to the left. the dealership mechanic followed procedure and reset the "centering" with his scan tool, but it made no difference. the service manual said to replace the steering column. the steering column was replaced and that did resolve the pulling to the left. however, when i reach 50ish mph and the computer puts the steering into "stiff" mode there is no play left in the steering and it takes a lot of effort for input. it requires full attention to keep the car in the lane at expressway speeds, and worse still in windy conditions. in short, at expressway speeds, the steering is too stiff requiring much effort, and there is no "play" in the steering so the car continually wants to go left or right, and not "track" straight down the highway, as it should. i find this annoying and tiresome, as i have arthritis and it requires needless effort, and even the junkiest old wreck should track down the highway and stay in the lane without much input. i've contacted every department at gm to find out if the steering can be set to always be in full-power assist mode and no one can answer the question, not even the handicap/special needs department. gm won't put me through to the engineering department who could actually answer the question, and would know how to go about it.

STEERING

the power steering completely locked up sending the vehicle and passengers into a ditch, airborne and back down into the ditch. ever since that incident, the steering wheel freely turns 360 degrees several times - with the key out of the ignition!!! when it is supposed to turn it doesn't and when it isn't supposed to turn, it does. the plastic key guard around the ignition switch fell off! and this is after earlier complaints about defective rims, the starter 9or electricl relay to the starter) failing after one weeks ownership, the power steering "locking up" and now little by little the pieces are falling off the car!!! and gm says - the computer doesn't show anything happened - or - it is not a warranty item - it is impact damage! i bought the 2010 chevy cobalt new on march 29, 2010 with 10 whole miles on it. i have also filed a complaint with the attorney general from some sort of intervention.

all four rims, especially the front passenger were defective, but dealer is claiming "impact damage". also, the front two tires have worn either due to defect workmanship or the defective rims. in either case, i have now had to replace both front tires on my new chevy cobalt purchased march 29, 2010. gm very uncooperative, closed all cases due to "cannot contact complainant", which is so untrue. i have provided three phone numbers every time i leave my name. they did reopen the rim and the steering issue. now the tires! what next?

AIR BAGS

electronic devices engaging passenger airbag and seatbelt notification. when i put an ac adaptor (lightweight), or most electronic devices, sometimes even just my ipod, on my passenger seat it thinks a person is sitting there. if i were to crash this would be a big problem airbags are expensive, plus the car is always beeping at me. i went to the dealership while my car was under warranty and they said, well you just cannot put it there. there is nothing we can for you, i even asked if they could at least put a center console in. (answer: no) i am reporting this as property damage because they won't fix my car which is obviously not functioning correctly, then let me drive off with an unsafe car. so be careful with putting your electronics on your passenger seat it could mean totaling your car, airbags are expensive. also my cobalt does not have a center console so there is no where else to put my electronics, which to me seems like a bought a damaged vehicle. i cannot use the functions it is supposed to have, like the aux input, because i have nowhere to put the mp3 player without activating the passenger seat alarm/airbag. be careful and help me complain. this is very shady, also right after i got my car they (the chevy dealership) acknowledged my cobalt was part of the affected "unintended acceleration" cars, now there is nothing about it anywhere. they said they would call me when they had a fix for it, and yet i was never contacted and i just got contacted about my power steering recall with no mention of the other problem they had previously acknowledged, affected my car. i don't think there is coincidence recalls are controlled by the same people that control gm, the government. it took gm 5 years to start fixing this power steering problem, think twice before buying general motors, you are really buying government motors, and your protected by their wonderful recall coverup program.

2010 chevy cobalt pulled into a parking spot and put my car into neutral and the emergency brake up and went to turn the key to the off position and it would not turn. i checked to see if there was a locking mechanism on the steering wheel and if i hadn't fully put it into neutral and neither was the issue. tried to get it out a couple times then eventually called onstar and they told me the tow guy would be able to get the key out of the ignition. they sent a tow truck but when the tow truck came he couldn't get it off i spoke to him and told him i did not have a ride home and i was an hour away from home. he said i could drive it home. the car was idle for over 2hrs and used about a quarter of a tank of gas. i drove it home and stalled it by puttin it in 1st gear and letting up off the clutch. then un hooked the battery. i will be bringing it to the nearest chevrolet dealership in the morning. today's date 11-12-2010 8:21pm previous issues as well when its very cold out when i go over a bump the radio will shut off and when i push on the console near the radio it shuts off as well.

i purchased a g.m. chevy cobalt lt. 2010 on aug. 30. on clearance sales. and then i found that the car?s door ajar sensor does not work properly. all sensors of the doors didn't work until the door was opened over 5 inches. i visited a dealer shop, and asked to fix it. a sales person knew that all cobalt lts have the same problem after checking other vehicles. also, all technicians had not known the problem until my claim. after searching, a technician said to me ?it can?t fixed, usually other vehicles are installed two sensors each door, but the cobalt has only one.? about 10 days later, service manager had tried to adjust all sensors and told me "it is fixed permanently." but 2 weeks later, driver's side sensor came out from the vehicle, from time to time the door ajar sign shows up on the dash board with ding! ding! sounds. even though all doors are closed completely, it's a very funny car! i visited g.m. dealer shop again. they tried to replace the sensor, didn't, because i want to fix it the proper way, not a temporary nor tricky way. my wife and i drove on the highway while a rear door was ajar without any warning. also sometimes my sunday school kids have to use my car come to church. therefore cobalt?s problem is very serious for all our safety. especially who lives with kids. i know that my mistake is buying a gm car, but i'm trying to minimize it. i know, g. m. cobalt has another problem regarding power steering, also door ajar sensor has serious potential problem. please investigate it carefully for safe driving .thank you.

suspension sounds like we are bottoming the car out all the time. it can happen anytime we meet a crook in the road. sounds like the car is going to break in half. we feel this problem could end up resulting in a catastrophic disaster. took it in and the dealership said that the battery bracket (which is located in the trunk, who would've thought) was loose and the fuel protector bracket was loose (on the front of the car). the dealership tightened the brackets and said all was fixed. we drove out of the parking lot and we still heard the problem. we have called the service department back and they said, "it's gotta be something else!" we have also been putting in complaints on the comfort of this vehicle. if you plan on traveling for more than 10 miles at a time, do not purchase a 2010 chevrolet cobalt lt2. our daughter in which is only 25 yrs old couldn't even ride in this car for 20 minutes without getting a backache. these cars are horrible in the winter snow and ice. they are of no comparison to the original chevrolet cavalier. they really should look into going back to those little cars, for they are great little cars all the way around. i have a 2002, and am so happy i still have it. i am trying to trade the cobalt back in and gmac is telling us that we will have a high percentage rate because we haven't had the car for a year. well we don't want this little ice skate, it is so unsafe. who would want to keep an unsafe vehicle? i think they should really start investigated the suspension issues since upon our research, we've found this has been going on since 2006, and nobody can figure out how to fix it. maybe that's why this is the last year for the chevy cobalt. they should all be taken off the market on recalls and people should be compensated for their heart ache and unsatisfactory outcomes. someone needs to research this and get it taken care of. this is america!

i purchased the vehicle in february 2010 and i didn't start noticing problems till around summer but they were not that bad till september were the car started showing strange electrical and steering issue. i received the recall letter in october and had the power steering issue fixed but its still have issues were the vehicle will swerve back and forth in return i will have to keep my hands on the steering wheel to try to keep it from hitting other vehicles on the highway. then the blower motor that blows the hot and cold air sometimes istatically revs up high and i have to turn of the heater. also i have noticed that the brakes squeal and i only have 10,300 miles. i have also noticed that the needles on the gauges in the dash tend to twitch radically when i turn the vehicle off sometimes. then at times the car when turned on will start to act as if it was to shut off and the lights would all dim and then it would stabilize. it has done that on the highway making steering difficult at times. the engine as well had made knocking noises to its been an off and on thing.

air bag service indicator comes on and air bags become inoperable. this has occured multiple times in between 3 trips to dealer for repair. first time at dealer: dealer claimed to order parts but never did. second time at dealer: dealer claimed to have replaced passenger air bag sensor and module. third time at dealer: dealer claimed electronic devices such as cell phones placed on seat will trigger the service air bag notification. the dealer claimed nhtsa reference #10030788 and tsb reference #sb-08-09-41-007a covered the incident and no further diagnose needed. however, the referenced items does not mention a 2010 chevrolet cobalt. fyi, any failure in the system disables the complete air bag system and would result in one or more fatal injuries if not fixed properly. it would also prohibit obtaining a vehicle inspection unless fixed. this is a major safety issue for all vehicles mentioned. recommend relocation of sensor and/or proper shielding of sensor from surrounding electronic devices.

driving a rented 2010 chevy cobalt lt, 4 door. had rented the vehicle from alamo rental cars on 7/2/11 the accident happened on 7/6/11. my wife and i were driving on i-4 east just outside orlando, fla. when the driver in front of me put on his brakes, i applied the brakes on the cobalt and immediately the car was violently out of control. the car going out of control was so violent i thought we had been hit from the rear. once the car went out of control i could not control it at all. we crossed all 3 lanes of freeway and hit the left rear tandem wheels of an 18 wheeler. the car finally came to a stop in the center lane facing in the opposite direction of traffic flow. just a few more inches toward the passenger compartment when contact was made with the 18 wheeler and this would have been a fatal accident. i have been beating myself up trying to figure out why just applying the brakes would cause such a violent and uncontrollable turn of events. then i started research on the web and found that brake issues with the cobalt is not a new issue. there is data on brake problems and individuals accounts of what happened to them when their cobalts went out of control just from applying the brakes. many of these accounts stated that dealers found no problems with the brakes following these instances of going out of control and in many cases being involved in accidents. this was the most horrific incident my wife and i have ever been involved in and the reality is that we were involved in this incident simply because i applied the brakes on the 2010 chevy cobalt rental. we were not hit from behind and there were no other vehicles involved with the exception of the 18 wheeler.

i was driving and the check power steering light came on and i was barely able to steer the car. i took it to a chevy dealership in dickson tn and they told me that yes there is a recall for this problem however my vehicle is not included. i have also contacted the gm hotline but was told the same thing. the vehicle is not under warrant now for that problem and i just purchased it about 2 months ago. can't let my teenage daughter drive due to fear that failure will result in an accident and that my insurance company would disallow any claim on this vehicle for an accident due to a recall and steering failure. i don't have any choice but to drive this car as it is my primary source of transportation and can't afford to get it fixed. in closing i want to know why if i am having the same problem that others experienced with steering and resulted in a recall for their vehicles why is my car not included? same problem as them, same part but because it was built after the recall i am stuck - help!

after running multiple errands around town, i pulled back into my work parking lot and as i was slowing down to stop, i heard a faint 'ding' noise and looked down and my display said "power steering" and then my steering wheel locked up! i was glad to be slowing to stop as the wheel would not turn. i turned off my engine and went inside work. after 10 minutes i came back outside to look at the manual to see where the power steering fluid container was inside the hood and start the car again. the power steering problem was gone. and i popped the hood and did not see a fluid container for the ps. i called the dealer as my car is two years old but i had just purchased it two months ago and had only put on less than 1,500 miles. i scheduled an appointment for me today (one day after the incident). the tech who checked me in, told me that there is no ps fluid container to fill, as it is all motor/electronic driven. he said they would look it over and let me know. i did purchase an extended warranty on this vehicle and the vehicle came with a two year certified used warranty as well. the mechanic said it was the power steering assist motor and that they would be replacing it at no charge as i had the warranty. the paperwork states they put a rebuilt ps assist motor into my 2010 cobalt. now after being online and reading multiple years of reviews regarding 2005, 2006 & 2007 cobalt's, i am wondering where does it end? how many more years worth of cars are having these problems? why has a recall not been done on any of these years cars? i drive my car on long family trips as well as many work trips, which is why i got it in the first place to combat the higher gas prices and get better fuel efficiency. but getting into a crash while i am on the road, if this problem occurs again, negates all of that. please do something! updated 08/29/12*l's

in june 2010 i purchased 2 cobalts. less than 3 months later, my key was stuck in the on position and i could not shut the engine off. took it to the dealer and they replaced the part. 1 year later, the 2nd cobalt had the same issue. in july of 2012, it happened to my car again. in barely 2 years of owning theses cars, 3 incidents of the same issue occurred. come to find out, the replacement part was also defective, yet there was no recall. i'm still waiting for the 2nd car to fail again like the first. i am appalled to say the least at gm for this issue. how can not being able to shut off your car's engine not be a recall? would if there was an accident involving other vehicles? my family has owned chevy cars since i can remember. i was so looking forward to purchasing another car next year. unfortunately i found out there were ac issues in the cruze. where i live, the summer temperature reaches an average of 115 degrees. don't think i want a faulty ac. i am seriously contemplating trading my car in to another car company (not chevy) to avoid this embarrassing mess.

STEERING

i own a 2010 cobalt lt, on april 11, 2013 i was backing out of a parking space and the power steering light came on and the power steering went out. i went to the dealership and they were closed, i then went to an auto store for help. discovered i had electronic power steering. after about 15 mins it was fine. car was fine until april 18, 2013, it happened again, i was driving in a parking lot and the light came on and no power steering,i shut off the car for a couple of hours it was ok. then on april 24, 2013 it did it again as i was driving, again turned off the car it was ok for a short time and went out again. happened again several times when driving on april 25 & 26.each time i shut off the car it would be ok for a few mins then shut off again. i called chevrolet customer service on april 11, 2013 and they told me there were no recalls on my specific car yet i've read several articles about 2007-2010 cobalts. i also contacted the dealership and they are refusing to take care of even a diagnostic test i believe this is a safety issue, i am afraid to drive my car very much because of this.the dealership says that the recall is closed, yet the article i read says that it takes some time for this to happen. i bought my car used in 2011 and if i had known there was a recall i never would have bought the car. the dealership people were very rude as i was very upset at trying to get this rectified.

while driving down the road at a relatively slow speed the car lost steering power. we could not turn the steering wheel left or right, had to continue driving straight. it is a major concern due to the fact that we often times drive very windy roads that overlook the ocean. just last weekend we were headed to stinson beach with a 10 - week - old in the car. the road leading to stinson beach is very curvy with sharp turns and steep drops. according to chevy there was a safety recall for power steering on 2010 chevy cobalts, but apparently our model is an exception to the recall. very frustrated, concerned customer.

i was driving home to visit my parents. was getting ready to turn left at a busy intersection and lost power steering. when i got to my parents house researched power steering online and saw where it may be just a one time occurrence. when i started my car later on i noticed that my power steering was fine. i had no more problems while visiting family. that following sunday i was on my way home and lost power steering again while driving at 10 pm on the interstate speed of 65 mph. my first car had no power steering so i've been able to cope but it's getting worse, in to turn around in my parking lot i have to turn my car of then back on in order to have enough power steering to make the tight turn. it's been a couple of months now i've tried to contact the only chevy dealership in my area with no response from them. i was finally able to drop it off the other day at the dealership i purchased the car from originally, i was informed this morning that my car was not covered under the recall for power steering and will cost me $500 to replace. within the last couple weeks my car has also started making a thumping type noise as well. it sounds like my front passenger tire is about to fly off the axle. not sure what is causing that - waiting to hear from the dealership on that. i feel like i'm riding in a deathtrap.

vicenza, italy. roads were clear and it was 12am, not many cars were on the road. i was headed to work and as i was coming into a small traffic circle, the car began drifting, i let go of everything and the whole thing shut off: engine and lights. another car was coming in but noticed i was drifting so they slowed down. i was headed into a ramp and tried to stop with my brakes which didn't work. i tried restarting the car but the key was stuck. i tried turning the wheel, but that was stuck. i finally got the car to somewhat slow down with the emergency brake, and barely missed the ramp. i had recently had an oil change and my brakes checked, so i know my car was fine. it later happened again a few months later. very similar situations. i have new tires and had my axles inspected, i know there is something wrong with my car and it is not safe. the most recent one was a few months ago at 0600. i used my breaks because an animal jumped in front of the car. the car slowed down, then the gas wouldn't work, the steering wheel locked and i almost hit another car as i struggled to turn it and the breaks would not work. the car then completely shut off and i was stuck with the car not waning to start. i took it to get inspected again, and thy said it was fine. i don't know who else to contact since gmc here and stateside, and he dealership i purchased it from in the states, are ignoring me.

hello. my 2010 chevy cobalt has been plagued with service air bag issues for a long time. my concern the ignition switch is only a smoke screen compared to the air bag system. people need to know when the service air bag light is on, the air bags system will not deploy when needed. i have had it serviced a couple times and invested over $700.00 to have it fixed and it is still broken. i was told they know about a faulty design with the main com wire that goes under the carpet and passenger seat to the air bag control box to break thus rendering the system fault. they replaced several parts in my steering wheel and it worked for a little while but came back. now my cruise control is also broken along with the faulty air bag system.

i have a chevy cobalt lt 2010. i got it used with 40000 miles on last year. i was in my car driving back home from school. all the sudden i smelled gas or burned oil. it is happening every once a while but i never paid attention to it. i pulled over. i turned my car off and i turned it back on in some couple minutes. also it takes me a while to switch the gear when i am in the highway. the brakes also are not working as i am pushing them hard. they have a delay to stop my car. i did not know anything about the chevy cobalt recall. when i got the notification letter from gm i realized that i should report these issues that have been constantly happening to my car. i am student. i do really need my car for my daily commute. i am going to ask gm to rent a car for me until the part gets fixed. however, even after this car gets fixed i am thinking that this car is not reliable to drive any more. i am not really feeling safe driving this car. i have heard that there have been some accidents due to the engine ignition issues and other issues regarding to this car. i am really scared about driving my car again, even if this gets fixed.

my sister borrowed my 2010 chevy cobalt in january to take my cousin for his drivers license. while practice driving before his test the power steering stopped working and he nearly hit a tree. i took the car back to the dealer and was told the problem was not covered under warranty and i had to pay to fix the problem. the dealer replaced the power steering motor. i now find there is a major recall for this issue with the 2010 chevy cobalt but i'm told my car is not being recalled for this issue. coincidence or are they not correcting this problem on all of the affected vehicles? if my cousin crashed the car that day and someone was injured, chevrolet would be in litigation with me over this issue right now.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

on 03jun14 i had the ignition switch replaced and the ignition lock cylinder and ignition key replaced due to the open recalls on the vehicle. since that time on 2 separate occasions when i attempted to start the vehicle it "stuttered" this is the best word i can use to describe the issue. i did not have this problem prior to having the above mentioned replaced. when this occurs i have to turn the ignition key to the off position and attempt to start the vehicle again and it starts. the "stuttering" does not sound like a dead battery or alternator issue as i have heard those sounds before. i do not believe the replacement of the above parts have resolved any recall issue and believe that injury or death will result in continued driving of this vehicle. thank you for your time.

having problems with power steering, believing the first in 3/2013..the power steering flashes on dash and stops steering car making it hard to control. was happening randomly at first ,but now 6/2014, it happens daily and is unsafe to drive. on saturday,6/21/2014 it happened 5 times in a 15 mile stretch, and on monday 6/23/2014, it happened 4 times in a 30 mile stretch. you literally have to pull off the road and turn the car off so the power steering can reset electronically. luckily , i was able to do so because it is scary when it goes. this car is an accident waiting to happen, and chevy says this cobalt is not included in the power steering recall. a lot of times i've had to drive a mile or so to find a safe place to pull over and shut the car off...and it happened in a parking lot before when you can't control it! come on gm, fix my car, you built it that way. if this car has the ignition and lock recall, don't you think it is related to power steering! do you want another death on your hands!!!!

STEERING

after having our new ignition switch about a week or so earlier, i went to drive our 2010 colbalt to a nearby town. on about june 28th or 29th, i was about halfway to the place i was going, my steering all of a sudden got harder to steer. i looked at the dashboard and saw the words power steering on it. so i took the car home and called a chevrolet dealership and they said to bring the car in. we were informed that they, (dealership), had heard about a recall on the steering, but have not received any paperwork to be instructed to fix this as a recall item. i looked up possible recall list on the chevrolets and the one i read is from march 31, 2014. why is it taking so long for them to decide if it is a recall if there are other problems out there? are they waiting for somebody to be seriously injured before they make that decision? and our vehicle had just had the ignition switch put in a week or so earlier.

STEERING

while attempting to merge into traffic during rush hour, the power steering stopped working and the message "power steering" was displayed on the dash. this made the car very difficult to steer. the other drivers hit their brakes suddenly to avoid hitting me as i struggled to complete the lane change. this resulted in pulled muscles in my shoulders and arms, along with the mental distress of almost being hit by oncoming traffic. this vehicle was already involved in two ignition recalls for a switch and cylinder. approximately 3 weeks ago i received a notice that this vehicle is now involved in another recall, this one to replace the power steering motor. as yet no parts are available for this repair, and no accommodations are being made for owners who have already experienced issues with the steering. i protested picking up my cobalt from the dealer when the ignition was repaired due to the power steering issue, and was told that picking it up and waiting for another letter stating that parts are now available is the best they can do.

i have received the recall notice in may that this vehicle model has been involved in numerous wrecks related to fatalities/injuries and i was directed to contact the dealership to have the defective ignition switch replaced. i contacted the dealership on 5/15/2014 and they told me they would order the parts and they would call me when the parts came in so they could fix it. as of today(7/16/2014) this problem has not been corrected. gm apparently has been aware of this problem since 2004 and neglected to notify the public or take corrective measures in the manufacturing process since 2004. i do not feel safe driving this vehicle and do not see the problem being corrected in a timely manner. i am requesting you evaluate if there is any way gm can be required to buy these vehicles from us so we can purchase another vehicle and not continue to put my life and many others in the same situation at risk on a daily basis.

i was driving on the highway returning to work from my lunch. i hear the three warning chimes and look at the dash. the warning reads "power steering". i slow down to make my turn in a quarter mile and realized that i no longer had the power steering. i knew i was on the recall list for the ignition and was still waiting for the part at my local dealer. i found online the bulletin 14115. dated march 31, 2014, that referred to replacing the power steering motor in cars including my 2010 chevrolet cobalt. when i restarted my car, the steering worked for a few blocks then went out again. my father took my car to the local dealer because i had to work. i had printed out the bulletin for him to take. the dealer had not heard of it. he called detroit and spoke to a man named al at gm headquarters. he did not have that bulletin either. the dealer went ahead and fixed the ignition recall part, but could not get the power steering issue to happen. i drove it less than one day and it happened again. i drove immediately back to the dealer. they told me i needed to replace the motor and possibly the steering column. out of pocket, i paid for the motor replacement. i was told if they ever receive the bulletin, they would reimburse me. i checked online for the recall on my vin and it is not on there. so is it a current recall or not? and why is gm not notifying people about this issue.

the check engine light has been on continuously for the past year. multiple diagnostic test have pointed to a coil pack or spark plug misfire prompting a replacement. each time the coil pack or spark plugs are replaced, the check engine light goes off and within the span of a few hours or the next day the light comes back on again. i take the vehicle back in for another diagnostic and the same code pops up again. there is a continuous misfire which cause the car to loose the ability to accelerate or cause the vehicle to shake violently while driving. the a/c increases the chances of these occurrences. at the last check the mechanic finally told me that there must be an electrical problem because he keeps getting the same code and they have replaced it too many times for it to still be the same problem. it was suggested to me that this problem may be a manufacture defect. i looked into it and have found similar complaints from other cobalt owners.
