VISIBILITY

at time of purchase of a new 2008 chevrolet cobalt, it was noticed the driver side rear view mirror had limited adjustment range and could not be adjusted for a clear rear view before the adjustment lever reached the end of its range. the dealership reported that many customers complain of the same defect but as yet the factory has provided no solution. i believe this factory defect has potential to cause serious accidents or mishaps.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC

tl*the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet cobalt. the contact rear ended another vehicle due to brake failure. the speed was unknown and there were no injuries. this was the second time that the brakes failed without warning. the vehicle was towed to the dealer and they duplicated the failure the following day. the contact was not informed of what caused the failure. he waited two weeks for a claim person to call him back. he was informed that the vehicle must go through his insurance company. the contact stated that the insurance company did not cover brake failure. the dealer turned the matter over to the manufacturer. the vehicle has not yet been repaired. it has not yet been decided if the vehicle will be repaired under warranty or through the insurance company. the vehicle is currently at the dealer. the failure and current mileages were 16,000.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

no incident has occurred at this point, however, i see this as a potential safety hazard. i have a 2009 chevy cobalt with battery installed in the trunk. the battery vent tube is connected to the top of the battery by a plastic elbow, a plastic vent tube is connected to the male nipple on the elbow. the plastic vent tube inside diameter appears to be too small inside diameter for the male nipple. the plastic vent tube is split where it attaches to my battery where it is pushed onto the male nipple which will allow the vented hydrogen gas to vent into the trunk (which is part of the passenger compartment only separated by the back seat) i think presents a potential safety hazard and potential fire risk. i can send you a picture of the split vent tube if you need to see it. i assume that this is a factory installation defect, this is not an improper repair defect, so this situation could exist on other models using this type of vent tubing.

AIR BAGS

air bags did not deploy in a 2009 chevrolet cobalt crash that caused $7,200 in damage and on star did not call or report the crash. when i asked why, i was told "because the "brains" of onstar was "knocked out" in the crash, that shut down the air bag system and other safety measures." fortunately, this crash did not cause any bodily harm to the person involved, but the whole front end of the car was pushed in, radiator was pushed back, with lots of other damage. the person in the car was fine, but if the engine would have been pushed in further in, it could have been in the lap or, even worse, the chest of the person driving. i do not have on star for it to be "disabled" in a crash because of where it is placed in the vehicle. this seriously needs to be examined and fixed before someone does really get hurt, if this had not happened already.

i purchased a new 2009 chevrolet cobalt from classic chevrolet in sugarland, tx on june 8, 2009. on june 10, 2009 the clutch pedal fell off as a result of a retainer not being secured at the lordstown factory. at 8848 miles, on september 23, 2009 i took the vehicle in for its first service work to the same dealership. i informed them that the clutch pedal had become inoperative and that i had secured the locking nut but asked them to check it further. the dealership found other retainers missing from the clutches master cylinder. the car had left the factory in an unsafe driving condition that could have resulted in an injury to myself or others.

(the wheel will not turn unless i give it gas and go straight for a little while, then sometimes it will then turn.) garage says that computer doesn't show anything wrong with it...but will take it back to garage again and again...until they tell me that a recall is on it. i pray that this doesn't happen when i'm in heavy traffic! very dangerous!

we purchased a 2009 chevy cobalt for our son who is just learning to drive. while practicing parallel parking and the 3 point turn the steering locked up and was impossible to move. we took it into the dealer who said that this is a problem that could occur (and there was a bulletin issued by gm) because the power steering is run by computer and it could overheat which could happen when practicing parallel parking. however, there was nothing they can do to fix it. i do not find this an acceptable solution since my son is a first time driver and has not even taken his driving test yet. i would like to know if there are any options available.

i own a 2009 chevrolet cobalt . after having driven through a water puddle that was on the right side of the car i applied the brakes for a stop sign. i could not hold the steering wheel in my hands. the car made an immediate left turn.i could not believe it. it was like the steering had a life of its own.i knew i went through a water puddle and was prepared to countersteer because of wet brakes on only one side of the car but what the power steering did on its own, which i couldn't overide ,was unacceptable steering ripped out of my hands and the car made a hard left.i bought this car with a federal guarantee. i believe this car has steering problems.the government needs to investigate cobalt steering. the electric steering has an apparently short life span and it is subject to failure at any given moment and is unsafe.

while driving my 2009 cobalt to work in september 2009 i was involved in a serious single vehicle accident which totally demolished my car. i was driving along the interstate on a clear dry morning with light traffic, around 70 mph when i went to change lanes while slightly braking. the car went out of control and i was not able to correct. i hit the cable barrier in the median going backwards and the car spun around after hitting the barrier repeatedly. from the minute the highway patrol arrived i have been asked what happened. i explained to the officer that the car just went out of control, like hitting sand or gravel but there was none on the highway. there was nothing on the road that we could see and he did not issue me a ticket. my insurance company wanted to know if i was texting or blacked out and if i was drug tested. no to all of the above! i have been driving for 30 years and have never had an accident. my driving record is clear. i believe now that i look back on the accident that the power steering my have failed sending me out of control. i own two other cobalts that my children drive and this concerns me greatly. my cobalt was replaced with a chevy impala.

chevy cobalt 2009. two incidents involving the same model but different cars. both rented from enterprise. don't know what category to put the complaint in. steering? braking? or something else? this model handles terribly on wet pavement. doesn't brake well on wet pavement, and tires spin when starting from a stopped position. incident 1. changing lanes on i270 md. going about 50 mph. and slowed down to move one lane to the right. going from a less used wetter lane to lane to the right, which wasn't quite as wet. car spun out twice and hit the jersey wall twice. then i was able to stop the car. fairly heavy traffic, and no other vehicles involved, thank god. state police were on the shoulder for traffic going in the other direction across from me but did not come to the car. incident 2. rented another of the same model. whenever the street was wet, the car did not brake well. seemed to be very short periods of not braking. when slowly starting from a stopped position, the wheels spun and then took hold. could have easily been another situation for spinning out. enterprise said there were no recalls. insurance company raised my rates from $103 to $167 per month!

please read this complaint along with complaint #103413322. i was backing out of a friend's driveway and the car veered off the concrete and hit a fire hydrant. i fixed the driver's rear damage out of my own pocket at a cost of $553.45 to avoid another insurance rate hike. the accident mentioned in the above complaint number raised my insurance $64.00 per month and i did not want it raised again or cancelled. i understand there was a recall on the 2009 chevy cobalt because if one was driving in reverse at a speed of under 10 mph. the steering is not controllable. i mentioned this to enterprise car rental where i obtained the car and they said they were told either by gm or the rnterprise corp. that the cars did not need to be fixed and could be rented as is.

water from hvac system leaks to the interior of the car when air conditioner is running. i've had the vehicle back to the dealer twice since purchased in 2009. once in june of 2010 and again in june of 2011. both times i was told the problem was corrected. after the second time it was repaired the leak appeared again within three miles of driving. when i spoke to customer service i was told it is not a warranty issue or a design flaw but a mere blockage of the drain tube which is normal for any vehicle with air conditioning times i was told there was debris present in the drain and that it had been cleared.

i have a big issue about the odometer reading on my cobalt. i have made several complaints to the dealership. i bought my car 7/29/09 and it now has 59,740 miles on it. this is only an in town car. i bought tires in 3/11 and the tire place last week said i put over 12,000 miles since then. this is no way possible. they say they have tested it and there is no problems. i have not change my driving habits since i bought this car. the car i had before this had a regular odometer and not the digital. the car was 1997 and it had 155,000 and i drove out of town a lot. by the end of the year i won't have a power train warranty anymore. there is just no way in hell this is correct and i have heard others say the same. someone needs to step up to this issue.. this looks like a way for the manufactures to get out of warranties.

TIRES

i have had 3 incidents that i believe are directly related to the fuzion touring tires on my 2009 chevy cobalt. the first was a rear end collision in early july, approximately 5 days after i had the tires installed on my car. when i needed to make an emergency stop the front wheels locked up and the car skidded into the car in front of mine, that had managed to stop before hitting a car that had swerved in front of him. the second incident occurred on oct 14, 2011. i was going through an intersection during a rainstorm. the intersection has a slight left bend to it. i was traveling at 35-40 mph when a van tried to make a left turn in front of me. he was way too close and i had to hit the brakes hard. the front wheels immediately locked up and my car rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise without slowing down at all. fortunately, the driver of the van realized that he had screwed up and got through the intersection rapidly and a collision was avoided. then last night, oct. 16th, again in the rain, i tried to stop at a yellow light on a slight downhill grade from about 45 mph. again the wheels locked up and the car skidded through the intersection at about 40 mph. i have been driving since 1973 and have logged over a million miles. these fuzion touring tires are the most dangerous tires i have ever driven on, especially on wet pavement. i have had other tires on my cobalt and never had any similar incidents. i am replacing them tomorrow because my life is worth more to me than the $400 that a set of tires costs. driving in the rain with those tires is like driving on ice with normal tires. these tires are potentially deadly and i think they should be recalled immediately and then shredded. i would also like to mention that there are no traction, treadwear, or temperature ratings on these tires. the size is195/60-15, 88h. i would like to stress that these are fuzion touring tires, not fuzion hri. i had a set of fuzion hri's and they were fine.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION

i drove to my destination and tried to turn off my car, however, the key would not turn off. luckily, i drive a 5 speed and was able to kill the engine by popping out the clutch otherwise i would be forced to let the engine run until it ran out of gas. with the engine off, the key was still stuck in the car and all that was needed to re-start the car was a giggle of the key. this is really unsafe. with my key stuck in my car, i was unable to lock the car door; otherwise i would not be able to reenter the car. this meant that a child could have entered my car and with the key already in the car (since it was stuck) they could have driven it and caused serious bodily injury or death to themselves or to another. if my car would have been an automatic transmission, then there would have been no way to shut it off except for running it out of gas. this could pose a serious safety risk in several situations such as a car being trapped in a garage with little ventilation or if it was involved in an accident involving leaking gasoline. general motors is aware of the problem and have even issued a service bulletin on the matter (document id: 2552146 ; #10256: customer satisfaction - ignition lock cylinder - replace ignition lock cylinder - (dec. 14, 2010). this bulletin is available online at http://5hizn1t.vacau.com/10256.htm#ss2-2552146. it upsets me that general motors is aware of the problem but fails to take any meaningful action. their "service bulletin" remedy is illusory at best. when i took a copy of this bulletin to a chevy dealership they did not honor it. they said my car was not one of the 2009 cobalts that were included. how not my car did the same thing as they warned. luckily no one was physically harmed by gm's negligence in this occurrence; however it is very likely that if this problem goes unresolved that someone will be seriously injured or killed.

SERVICE BRAKES

my son was driving to work, he was heading down a long winding road when he applied the brakes, and discovered that the brakes had suddenly failed. the brake pedal would not go to the floor; it was stuck and unable to move. he described that the car seemed to stall and continue to drift down the hill with no ability to stop, gradually picking up speed. he got in the curb lane and continued steering the vehicle while searching for the safest place to crash, as this was his only option because he was unable to slow to a stop. in the middle of morning rush hour, he was able to successfully cross opposing lanes of traffic and crash head-on into a hillside in a parking lot at about 45 mph. the underside of the vehicle was smashed in, damaging the frame beyond repair. the airbag deployed, which resulted in bruising of the chest. he did not lose consciousness, and did not acquire any cuts or scratches. he did require transportation to the hospital by ambulance, and was strapped to a backboard and put in a neckbrace. at the hospital, he was given a chest x-ray and an examination, which determined that nothing was broken or fractured. he did suffer micro tears in the muscles of his back due to the impact of the crash, and a bruised chest as a result of the seatbelt and airbag. needless to say, he missed work that day and the next three weeks of work while recovering. the car was totaled.

AIR BAGS

i was stopped at a traffic light with my foot on the brake waiting for the light to change to green. the passenger airbag curtains both deployed and blew out the headliner of the vehicle. it was about 80 degrees and dry. i went to the dealer who said the incident was an insurance claim. my insurance company denied the claim saying there was no accident. a gm investigator read the data box and the cdr file information shows there was no event recorded to recover. something was preventing the data box from being read at the computer port under the dash, they had to remove the data box and plug their computer directly into it. initially gm claimed i put the vehicle in a rollover situation. now that has been proven wrong, they are saying something like moisture made the airbag deploy. my vehicle is unusable and sitting because of gm's failure to step up and do something about my case.

i took my 2009 chevrolet cobalt 1lt sedan to the dealership from where i purchased it from today to get my vehicle inspected as required per my state. prior to today, for about the past week or so, my check engine light came on. went to autozone and they ran a diagnostic on it saying a cam shaft position sensor needed replacement. replaced it and check engine light went away for about a week then came back on. (replaced both of the sensors to be safe) check engine light would turn off for days then randomly come on. went to dealership and they stated i needed a new front right strut since mine's was leaking. called up a few other mechanics and they have said this is a common issue with cobalts. if you google "cobalt strut leaking", there are many results, yet no recall. this isn't just common in my vehicle's model year but with all cobalts. i feel there should be a recall since this is common among this make/model.

intermittently, my air bag warning light comes on, and in the message center on my dash board, the message "service air bag" is seen. it is intermittent and is happening more often, sometimes up to 5 times in a 20 mile drive. speed does not seem to make a difference as it happens when i am stopped, and at any speed. road conditions also do not seem to have an effect as it happens in snow, rain, dry, bumpy or smooth roads. i have physically called gm to report this as well. i am taking my vehicle to my local dealer to be checked as i was told it is probably a "bad connection" which is scary. bad connection as in they won't go off when i need them, or bad connection as in they can go off while driving.

i was trying to turn my car on and i kept hearing a clicking noise. the car would not start no matter how many times i tried to restart it. i waited another five minutes it started and as i went to put the car in reverse it shut off again. i put the gear back into parking and then tried to restart the car, everytime it turned on it would shut off as i put the gear into reverse. so as i turned the car on again i went forwards to turn outward from the parking stall around the cement block but then the car shut off again and i hit the cement block which left a dent on the right side of my car. when driving to work it shut off in the middle of the road on my way to work. i pushed the gas pedal and nothing happened and then it just shut off. i took the car in to get serviced by the dealership, i paid for a vehicle inspection. the next day i went to school and my car would not start i was stuck in a parking stall again. i called the dealership and they said to bring the car in, i told them it was not running and it needed to be towed by them because i had just taken it in. they towed it and kept the car. the next day i called and they had not gotten to it. then the third day i called and they still did not get to my car. finally on the fourth day i explained to them that i had a rental and was paying out of pocket. they then told me it had to do with the clutch and that i had to replace it. so i did, i have the receipts. a few days later, it happened again. i tried replacing the battery. it happened again, i went back to the dealership and they said it was faulty wiring all along and that the wires leading to the power of the car were loose and rubbing against the ignition causing the car to turn off and they said they fixed it. months later the car shut off again. i spent a lot and have all receipts and exact dates, i have since stopped driving car.

i feel that for a recall that has caused several deaths, gm should be getting the replacement parts in quicker. it took them over a month to even notify me of the recall, and when i called my dealership to schedule the appointment they said it would be another 1-2 months before they could get the part in. it has now been nearly a month and it's not there yet. i don't feel comfortable driving a car that i know could possibly cause my death. it took them all these years to even admit to the problem, let alone all this additional time to get the parts in and the recalls completed. from what i understand, it's a minor part and doesn't take that long to fix them. i'm not very happy right now. i have an appointment for an oil change next wednesday, june 11th, and would really like to have this recall taken care of at the same time to ease my concerns. i have to wonder how many more will be killed before these recalls are actually completed.

while i was driving down my street, my car started shaking & my engine, oil & traction service lights came on. the engine service power detector came on on my dashboard. i had to miss work & called the dealership & informed the mechanic of the problem. he asked me to drive it in. i informed him that i didn't feel safe driving on the streets or the highway. the mechanic offered for me to use their towing company but they charge. i informed them that i have towing service. the car was towed that day & on friday, i received a call; while i was at work from the mechanic stating that they checked the car out & the front throttle body had to be replaced due to a sensor being faulty. the cost of repairs would be $575. i just purchased this car on 4/19/14 from jim trenary in o'fallon mo & 3 weeks later, i had to have it towed to the dealership for the accelerator pedal failing. the dealership did pay for that expense but not this one because the electrical problem isn't covered under the power train warranty. i feel like they are trying to get over on me because i am a woman & don't know much about cars. i called to see if they could try to fix it for less but was informed that the throttle body needed to be replaced in order for the sensor to be put in. i have to still pay the note every month on a vehicle that was assured at the time of the sale was safe & would have any problems because it was taken care of including the replacement of the power switch ignition. i sent a text to my salesman asking to be put in another vehicle but to my dismay, he informed me that i can't trade out of my vehicle for 18-24 months. i feel like i shouldn't have to pay the $575 & the mechanic is trying to get over because i am a woman. i informed the mechanic that i can't afford to pay the $575 because i don't make that much & have other bills to take care of. i bought that car for reliability.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

getting into car after work, noticed gasoline smell, got out of car walked around and looked under car, did not see any visible leaks on ground. smell had not been noticeable all of the time and is now worse, can also smell inside car as well as outside. to this day still not seeing any leaks under car have been parking over cardboard larger than the car have also checked under the hood and not seeing anything. today became sick from the strength of gasoline to the point of vomiting. after reading tonight that others have experienced similar incidents, feel it is necessary to report this issue as i do live in a very hot and humid location that is not part of the listed states that chevrolet is allowing for this recall, that is unjust. looks like chevrolet needs to step up to the plate before people start dying for something they are clearly aware of, again!

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

i have a fuel pump leak on my 09 chevy cobalt. according to records, gm issued a recall on 9/19/2012 due to issues with the plastic covering on the fuel pump cracking. this recall was issued to owner's who purchased registered their vehicle in various states, including florida (or under special coverage # 12191 other states may qualify), however, i was not notified of this recall, despite gm's legal obligation to notify all customers who qualify. my car was registered in florida prior to the recall issue date and therefore should qualify. my car has been issuing the smell of gasoline over the last few months and a diagnostic test from a reputable mechanic has shown that the pump needs to be replaced due to difficulty igniting the engine/starting the vehicle. gm refuses to replace the part for me, though i feel as an owner of a 2009 chev cobalt i should be covered for this recalled part.

ENGINE

i have already had the recall service performed on my 2009 chevrolet cobalt, but the ignition switch problem still persists after having the recall service performed. there's the possibilitiy that a safety hazard to the american public still exists if there are cases similar to mine. the vehicle ignition was inadvertently switched to the "off" position while i was getting onto a highway. i was shifting my hips to adjust my seating position, and my knee bumped into my keychain and caused the ignition to switch to the "off" position. i lost speed control and power steering, but i was luckily able to move to the shoulder of the highway, shift into "park", and re-start the vehicle. this event happened within 48 hours of me having the recall service performed at a chevrolet dealership.

AIR BAGS

vehicle has service air bag light on, light goes off and on, has been doing this at all speeds, but never stays on for more than a minute. car had this light on when i purchased this car from a dodge dealer in dec.2011, and they said that they repaired it, but it was not reported in detail to gm warranty service, so they lied. now car needs air bag repairs, not covered by any warranty, and it will cost over $900.00, and car only has 88,464 miles on it. this was told to me by a chevrolet dealer who is doing the ignition switch recall for my car. i don't have that kind of money, as i'm still making car loan payments for the next 4 years. i think this is awful, air bags and sensors should last longer than 88,464 miles. my 1997 saturn never had air bag problems, and it ran until 297,336 miles. awful, too expensive to repair!!!!!, no assistance with paying for airbag repair, and can't sell car unless it is repaired. the dodge dealer who sold me the car should be held liable, as they did work to get the service air bag light off, when i purchased the car from them. they hid the information from me, when i purchased the car. air bags do not need ongoing service.
