the headlamps, parking lamps, fog lamps, and daytime running lamps have condensation form on the inside of the lenses during cold weather after the lights have been turned on. this reduces the effectiveness of the lights and can lead to unsafe driving conditions. the dealer refuses to replace the lamps under warranty even though nj division of motor vehicles says they will fail the vehicle when i take it for the state motor vehicle inspection. *la

POWER TRAIN

during acceleration (taking foot off acclerator stops noise) a grinding noise appears to be coming from rear axle or transmission. noise is intermittent, occurs approximately 4-5 times per week. have not been able to identify unique conditions that cause occurrence. noise will generally only occur for a single acceleration and after it goes away, it is unknown when it will return.

at 500 miles, my new avalanche required the crossmember to be changed due to clunks in the column and floorboard during turns, at slow or fast speeds. again at 9527 miles it required changing again for the same reasons. i had a 2002 avalanche that gm had to buy back from me due to the same problem but were unable to repair. *jb

new 2004 chevrolet avalanche purchased 08/14/04. on 09/24/04, vehicle stopped on freeway. towed to dealership purchased from, winter chevrolet in pittsburgh, ca. kept for 11 days without information given verbally or in the mail. continue to have problems. truck again stopped on freeway on 12/27/04. re-started after turning off and waiting a couple minutes. taking back in tomorrow. sales department will not return call regarding trade or return of down. simply patch up the new vehicle and send me out again awaiting next problem. *jb

continued problem with pop/noise in front end of 04 avalanche while turning and turning while in reverse. chevrolet has issues several tsb's for this problem, but the problem persist. at the moment it has not cause any accidents but myself and other avalanche owner are fearful that it will develop into a safety concern if not permanently corrected.*ak

while driving my 2004 chev, avalanche down a dirt road i experienced a loud noise coming from the rear of the vehicle. as i slowed down the sound got louder and gave a snap sound. i was alble to keep the vehicle on the road, but later learned i was experiencing a cracked alinium rim. we have called the dealer ship as the truck has 17,500 miles on the rim. they need to inspect the old rim to make sure we did not damage it in any way. why would i ? it is so hard to change a tire on the avalance, not to mention i could have been killed. if the tire passes inspection then we might have a new rim. *ak

on several occasions, my tailgate would slam open on the rear bumper after accelerating. because of the vehicle was still under manufacturer warranty, i brought it to the dealer to have it checked. without even looking at it, i was told that the tailgate must be slammed shut (hard) because of the weather stripping. i tried this for a couple of weeks but still no difference. i took it to another dealer and in a matter of minutes, they readjusted the latches and i haven't had that problem since.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

dt: the electricity from the automatic control monitor that controls the air conditioning and temperature control on the roof of the truck was causing the consumer to experience severe headaches and she was no longer able to drive the vehicle with the heat or air on. she had to pull the fuse that controlled the monitor because turning it off the wave of electricity was still flowing. the gauss meter that checked the wave of electricity was flashing red when she held it up to her head. it was not suppose to be like that. the symptoms were: her scalp was real tender and swollen, her left side of shoulder and neck was hurting a lot, and she had to use contacts in her left eye because of vision problems. all of these symptoms were from the automatic control monitor she has never had any of these symptoms prior to this. since she unplugged the fuse these symptoms disappeared, and she felt better. her concern was that other people driving this vehicle may never be able to figure out what caused these problems and she felt that this was a severe health risk. *ak *jb

dt: dents in the hood keep reappearing. this happened 4 times and dealership fixed vehicle 3 times. these dents were on the hood near the glass on driver's side over top of the hinge area. consumer has been in contact with gm and his dealership. consumer was suing gm under the lemon law. the ohio state attorney generals office gave the consumer this phone number. the better business bureau has seen the video of the vehicle and has already been involved. consumer thought that the metal that was made out of the hood had a flaw in it. technicians felt that the weather may have been an issue. consumer had this vehicle looked at by numerous specialists. consumer was leaving the hood as it was until the lawsuit was settled. consumer stated that gm refused to fix the vehicle. *ak

dt: the contact owns a 2004 chevy avalanche. when turning steering wheel hard in either direction . if the vehicle is in reverse one can still hear the knocking noise. the dealership has put something new in steering, but she was unsure of the part was, and two weeks later she is still had the problem. the dealership said that this was happening to a lot of these vehicles. the service department claimed that almost every six months the part would have to be changed. as of right now she was getting this fixed since vehicle was still under warranty. she could not afford to pay for repairs after her warranty was up. the contact began to have this problem three months after purchasing the vehicle. the part has been replaced once. *ak.

dt: the consumer bought this vehicle brand new, the brakes will come on by themselves. took the vehicle to the dealer, they said the brake fluid was contaminated. then, took vehicle to gmc, they gave the consumer a run around and thought that consumer did something to it. the vehicle has been sitting for a little over a month. now, took it to a local mechanic, who determined that the brake fluid was not contaminated. the dealership said this vehicle was not covered under a warranty, and noticed this on october 1, 2004. *ak

dt: the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet avalanche. the contact has been having problems with air bags ever since last year. the air bag light illuminated every time he took the vehicle to the dealership. they said they fixed it and later the air bag light came on again. the contact took vehicle back to the dealership. the dealership told him that they put sensor on, and done something to the wiring, and every time the air bag light came on. the air bag light has been coming on since august 9, 2004. from the time that the dealer said that they repaired the vehicle was about three weeks and the air bag light came on again. *ak each time the vehicle was taken tot he dealer they replaced the air bag module. *nm

dt: the consumer noticed a brake problem on september 8, 2005. nhtsa recall 05v379000 for the service brakes was issued. contacted the dealer and the manufacturer, and they said this vehicle was not included in the recall due to vin. . when going between 1-10 mph the abs system will kick and could hear a noise, the abs will let go then catch and let go again, then the brake pedal will down further. had to stomp on the brake pedal in order to get the vehicle to stop, like loosing the brakes. *ak

dt: the contact stated vehicle would take very little fuel at a time and shut the pump off. the vehicle was taken to the dealership, and they replaced the fuel filter line. however, problem recurred. the vehicle was taken to the dealership, and they replaced the fuel tank. the vehicle would not take fuel at all , it leaked fuel on the ground. the vehicle is currently at the dealership again . when driving in excess of 55 mph the hood vibrated. the dealership has not been able to diagnose the problem.*ak

dt: contact complained about air bag system problem. since vehicle was newly purchased the air bag dash light intermittently went on and off. at allan green chevrolet sales dealer they tried to correct the defect three times without success. contact took the vehicle to camino real chevrolet, and they could not correct the problem either in two attempts. contact decided to take the vehicle to a third dealer, osama chevrolet, this one tried four times, and the air bags light continues to come on and off. the road conditions at every incident have been normal. contact expressed concern about this problem because he had no confidence that the air bags system will work in case of an accident . *ak updated 02/07/06. *jb

2004 chevrolet avalanche designed without inline fuel filter, only a filter made into the fuel pump assembly inside the tank. according to gm and all data repair manuals, this filter is a non-serviceable item intended to last the life of the vehicle. at approximately 60,000 miles, vehicle mil indicator came on, diagnosed as misfire condition. vehicle stuttered under both idle and acceleration. the dealer determined that sediment from the fuel tank had contaminated the fuel injectors and entire fuel system needed to be cleaned. claim for repair under warranty was denied, even though non-serviceable lifetime part allowed contamination into the system. very poorly designed fuel filtration system with the potential to cause stalling under all driving conditions. *jb

the speedometer in my 2004 chevrolet avalanche quit working. previously, it had temporarily stuck or hesitated occasionally but then was okay. now it doesn't work at all. the odometer and all the other gauges/instrument cluster indicators are still working. obviously, not knowing ones' speed creates a significant safety hazard. in order to correct this failure the dealer stated the instrument cluster gauges would have to be removed and sent to the gm repair/replace facility in texas. cost; approximately $400.00 dollars and take 7-10 days. since my avalanche has 42,000 miles this is not covered by the warranty, and is to costly for me to repair at this time. *nm

my husband, my two children and i were all in our 2004 chevrolet avalanche k1500, headed to church on sunday morning, going down the street we live on. my husband, who was driving, turned on the cross street. all of a sudden, every one heard a big clunk, like some thing had dropped. the car would not move forward. my husband drove our vehicle backwards all the way home. it was parked for a few weeks, while we contacted aaa, the manufacturer, and local chevy dealerships to find out about repair and warranties. we believe this is a failure of the transmission. this vehicle has about 39000 miles, just over the written warranty, which is 36000. the manufacturer has not yet offered to pay for the repairs but advised us to take it in to the chevy dealership to confirm the diagnostics. the vehicle is currently be tested by a chevrolet dealership in redding, ca. the dealership has contacted the manufacturer to find out what they will do to repair the confirmed "transmission" problem. this is an expensive repair that has resulted in our loss of use of a vehicle that was within its normal expected use and represents a substantial financial burden. i have also contact the federal trade commission. i was please to know that the vehicle may still be within its implied warranty (first four years) and the right to revoke purchase may be an option if the manufacturer and dealership refuse to correct the problem at no cost to us. i am concerned that the problem, however, may be more widespread, and felt i should report this defect of the chevrolet avalanche 2004 k1500, for further investigation in case other owners have the same issue. *jb

dt*: the contact stated while driving 20-35 mph, the vehicle violently vibrated. total control was lost of the vehicle causing the vehicle to veer into the other lane resulting in the vehicle hitting the side of a mountain. the air bags did not deploy. prior to this incident, popping noises were heard while turning the steering wheel to the left and right going forward and in reverse. the vehicle was towed to the dealership where the dealership determined the passenger side tie rod was broken. there was damage done to the vehicle. there was not a police report filed.

(1) 2005 chevrolet avalanche 1500. 119,000 miles, 95% interstate. vehicle does not tow, go off road, or engage in other activities which would increase the stress on the drive train beyond normal wear and tear. transmission has received regular maintenance per the manufacturers recommendations. (2) part failed during merge onto highway from complete stop. failure resulted in a power loss to vehicle, making acceleration very difficult and maximizing vehicle speed at 35 mph. traffic behind vehicle had to significantly slow down to avoid accident. (3) dealer replaced torque converter and immediately shipped part off site before request for returned part. dealer claims customer abuse. *jb

my 2004 avalanche started making knocking sounds when turning corners - took it to the dealer and $700 later and a new steering yoke the knock was squelched (not gone) and the speedometer coincidentally started moving like a second-hand on a watch (jerky) - took it to the dealer and they want $525 for a new cluster that they say is not common - looking on the web, i found this to be a very common problem with avalanches and the waiting list can be in the hundreds before me - if this is so common, why isn't there a recall and why does the dealer deny the number of occurrences? *nm

no events before speedometer started to stick i was driving on interstate when my needle showed 90 mph but i felt like i was doing 70 mph and when i finally stopped it showed 40 mph and now when driving on interstate i don't know how fast i am going but it shows 120 mph i am driving by rpms i know between 2000 and 3000 rpms i should be around 80 mph. *nm

i have a 2004 chevrolet avalanche with 38,456 miles and the speedometer is erratic. it began yesterday, 12/25/06 while driving to my family's christmas dinner. i was on the freeway 70 mph and the speedometer needle jumped to 95 mph without me accelerating. i exited the freeway, came to a complete stop and the speedometer needle registered 35 mph. this morning 12/26/06, the speedometer is still incorrect. it now registers 20 mph in park. i have researched this on the internet and this seems to be a common problem with chevy trucks/suv's 2003 or newer. it seems gmc needs to issue a recall. repair cost seem to start at $500 and go up. from what i was able to decipher, the "cluster" needs to be replaced. *jb

here's about my disappointment with my 2004 avalanche which i purchased on july 28, 2004 with 137 miles on the odometer. i purchased the value guard gm protection plan. of course, the vehicle was great for the first 37,990 miles. my first problem came on 10/31/06, only 2 years 3 months after purchase date. my tailgate handle broke while opening it handle replacement was $568. to my surprise and apparently also to the representative from the dealership the existing spoiler had to be torn off and replaced with a new one to access the handle. that was an additional $186 plus labor. i question the designers of the tailgate assembly. why would anyone design parts that would have to be destroyed in order to service another part? in fact, why would any part that would normally be used frequently by a regular trucker break so easily? of course, neither the warranty nor the gm protection plan covered this. the next problem occurred on 12/27/06 at 41,901 miles, my windshield wipers wouldn't shutoff. into the dealership we went and $334 later a wiper board was replaced. no warranty again covered this problem. i no sooner got home and had to return on 12/28/06 at 41,944 miles. now my dashboard light service 4 wheel drive was on. this time i was told the transfer case encoder shorted out and $779 later it was fixed. i might have used the 4-wheel drive 8-10 times at the most. at that time, i'd owned this vehicle for 29 months, that's pretty sad!! today with the latest episode, i tried to lower my front passenger side window and it wouldn't work. the other 3 windows work fine. i waited and tried again later still no luck. i hear a clicking sound but no action.this probably means another visit to the dealer. *nm

over the last few months i have noticed that my 2004 chevy avalanche speedometer suddenly goes off by 10-80 miles an hour. there are no events that "cause" this to occur, it appears to do it randomly. i notice it when the vehicle suddenly appears to be going faster or slower than the speed indicated. i tried contacting the dealer for repair but they have ignored my online repair appointment submittal. the upsetting part is that my warranty just ran out. this is a major problem and needs to be fixed. luckily my cell phone has gps and will indicate ground speed. i can use it to verify the vehicle speed. i am lucky that i have not gotten a ticket or killed. i have a photo of my speedometer nearly pegged out at 115 miles an hour to prove it. i have never driven my vehicle that fast. i heard that others are having problem with gm suv speedometers. this appears to be a wide spread problem. *jb

when replacing (for the first time) the rear brakes on my 2004 chevrolet avalanche at 28,767 miles, i was informed by the dealership that the rear rotors had severe corrosion. the rotors were pitted such that they would require replacement. i asked about my 3-year bumper-to-bumper warranty because there was nothing i did to cause the defect. the dealership said that gm would not warranty the rotors. i contacted gm to inquire about the corrosion and their warranty as published in the sales brochure and warranty booklet. plus, i have owned gm products for 30 years and never had any corrosion; brakes or otherwise. they replied that there was no defect in the parts; and that's it. as far as they are concerned, case closed.

the speedometer has malfunctioned on several occasions. most recently july 24, 2007. i was driving down a highway and it jumped to 75mph -approx 20mph faster than i was actually doing. upon coming to a complete stop, the needle settled on 21-22mph mark. the needle doesn't move smoothly either. it jitters as it moves and jumps more as it is fixing to come to a rest. after turning the vehicle off, then back on - the needle will fall about 5mph. i had turn shut off / restart several times to get the needle back to 0mph. today, i drove to work and didn't see a problem outside of a jittery needle. previously the speedometer has stopped all together while driver and settle on 0 mph or will max at 35mph while driving. at these instances i would pull over, turn the vehicle off and back on to no avail. however, opening the door, which i guess turns off the electricity to the vehicle (radios goes off when door is opened), seemed to reset everything. a few things concern me about this. *i am fixing to take it to a dealer, but i believe my warranty is out and they will not fix it without huge $$$$. *i had purchased a brand new 2003 cavalier and had the same thing happen to the instrument cluster. luckily, i caught it very soon after, and during warranty, and was able to have it fixed for free. i'm not sure what the dealer will say but i'm not very optimistic about it right now.

may 2006 electronic switch replaced because 4 wheel drive was engaging without being activated. had been to dealership several times with problem and finally had them admit there was a problem. feb 2008 front wheel drive had to be replaced as it was a possibility that it could lock up while driving. out of warranty so i had to pay $1,300.00 in repairs. contacted gm exec offices and they investigated only to advise they could do nothing because the car warranty 35,000 miles had expired and car had 65,000 miles on it. i think the front end drive was damaged when the switch failed and it took time for it to fail.

there was a loose sounding noise in the steering column. upon my investigation i found out that many gm's are having the same problem. also because of the intermediate steering shaft being lose i could not tell that the right front wheel bearing was bad to the point the hub had to be replaced. this could have had catastrophic results (fatality). upon talking to various employees i was told that gm has had a design problem and that they now have changed to a different shaft. my vehicle was repaired and even the repair order states "replace upper int shaft with new style reroad test ok" i think in public safety that the ntsb should look into how many of these have had a problem (gm) and the average mileage of not only my model vehicle but all gm's that have this type of steering. it is a serious safety issue.

oil gauge began to show low pressure then no pressure. carried to dealer, they replaced oil sensor on engine. problem still occurs but only after vehicle has been driven for a couple of hours straight. now the pressure gauge pegs to the right. however, once the vehicle has been turned off for the night, it performs correctly and i have been unable to get it to demo for dealer as it only does it on long trips which occur on weekends and night.

when i slow down at low rates of speed, occasionally the brakes began to pulsate as if in the abs mode. i was told that it was because of the corrosion on the abs speed sensors, located within the wheel bearing assembly, formed by road salt. this problem just appeared without warning or provocation. when operating the vehicle and low speeds, stopping distances are lengthen by 10 to 30 percent. there has been a recall on this type of vehicle for several years in other states. for some inexplicable reason, it does not pertain to wisconsin. even after all of these years, the part to repair my truck remains on backorder. the dealer/manufacturer can only provide them if i purchased the whole bearing assembly which is quadruple the price of the part that i need. of course, i feel that this is unfair and while i wait for the appropriate part to repair my truck, i am putting my safety, as well as others, in jeopardy (this is sad to say but i am not using prudent decision-making skills). i believe that it is fair to say that if there were not others in the area having this exact same problem, the part would not be on backorder throughout the dealerships in wisconsin. i believe that this matter should be look into and addressed and refunds given to those who have paid the enormous price of this repair simply because it is a known defect and because this defect is a safety hazards.

failure has occurred twice on my 2004 avalanche surrounding the inefficiencies within my dash board. the speedometer was reading incorrectly. it was very dangerous as the accurate speed was not reporting. i was able to get this replaced at about 40,000 miles. recently, the gas gauge is not working correctly. after filling up the tank and taking a road trip the gas gauge immediately reported an empty gas reading. the gas gauge continues to read incorrectly and fluctuates. i have contacted the company to find out that there is a service warranty on the vehicle up to about 70,000 miles. currently my truck is at 86000 miles all due to highway traffic to work (30 miles each way). i do not feel that i should expense this cost since this is clearly a factory issue. regardless of the number of miles on the vehicle if it is a known defect it should be covered. this is very dangerous as i could run out of gas on the road. this is also very disappointing as this depicts the quality of the vehicle. my father has bought nothing but chevrolet's over the years and states how efficient the vehicles are. in addition i have already replaced the entire dash board once from the first incident surrounding the speedometer to have received another defective dash board surrounding the gas gauge.

i have a problem with the speedometer showing inaccurate speed on my 2004 chevy avalanche. the problem started while i was slowing from 55mph to 45 mph do to a reduce speed area, the vehicle slowed but the speedometer said at 55mph. it stayed at 55mph even when i came to a complete stop, shut off the vehicle and restarted, when i put the vehicle in gear and started moving again the speedometer began to move up to 60mph when i was traveling approximately 10mph. i sped up a little more and the speedometer climbed more. i slowed down to a stop and this time the speedometer stopped at 60mph while i was at a complete stop. i turned around to go back home as i could not legally judge my speed and as i proceed to travel at my best estimate 50-55 mph the speedometer climbed up past 120mph. when i parked the vehicle at home the speedometer showed 65 mph. i opened the hood, disconnected the battery and let it sit unconnected for approximately hour and then reconnected the battery. this did not help, the speedometer still showed 65mph. i contacted my local chevy dealer and asked them about the problem i was having, they told me that since i have over 40,000 miles on my vehicle that i would have to pay 400 dollars for a new cluster. this is a safety issue and it should be covered under warranty. i can not drive my vehicle for fear of inadvertently speeding and thus getting one of those nice driver awards for speeding. please help resolve this matter.

my 2004 avalanche speedometer and tachometer read completely inaccurate. example=shows me going 120mph and 3000m rpm with motor off. i bought the vehicle used from a chevy dealer and was told it had warranty remaining. when the problem began last year i was told it was not warranted. i lacked the money for the replacement and have been driving it broken. now i am finding out through other avalanche owners that it has been being fixed by dealers at no charge as there have been so many problems. i feel this should be a recall. i know my vehicle now has 110,000 miles, but i can document by law enforcement notes on a ticket i received last year that i had the problem about 30,000 miles ago. i feel this should be repaired at no expense to me. they told me when i called that their parts dept had a long waiting list for the replacement panel so you know ?chevrolet knew they had a widespread problem. thank you. i hope to hear back from you. also at about the same time my abs/brake light started coming on after i drive a few miles. i don't know if it is as common of a problem or related to the instrument panel problem or not.

no injuries. airbag system flashing on and off on dashboard display intermittently. no particular pattern in driving conditions. took to dealer and paid to have it fixed however after about 5 months it started again. brought it in a second time and again after about 5 months started again. dealer claimed it was bad wire and replaced but was also told airbags would not work if in a collision.

the front left wheel sounds like it is bouncing, rattling and loose. this has been diagnosed as an intermediate steering shaft needing to be repacked and the steering gear box needs to be replaced. this problem has existed since i purchased the vehicle. it has been repaired twice under warranty. now that the warranty has expired, gm refuses to pay for the repairs. gm claims this is not a safety issue. however, i am concerned that it will become one since this is a steering problem. it is clearly a design defect since many other avalanche owners have the same issues.

2004 chevrolet avalanche speedometer stops working. also never received any recalls for chevrolet on this 2004 avalanche.

POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

while driving on freeway vehicle was revving up, immediately exited freeway and found transmission was gone, vehicle would not go in reverse, did drive in neutral. vehicle has only 30k miles. took vehicle to transmission mechanic stated the chevy avalanche and denali are known for this, and feels this is a factory defect. his vehicle too went out at 20k miles. my cousin transmission too went out at 50k miles, would like to have dealer repair my vehicle. how many more vehicles does the nhtsa need to complain about so the matter can be corrected by the dealer(s) or manufacture.

tl*contact owns a 2004 chevrolet avalanche. while driving 55 mph the brakes failed completely while trying to slow the vehicle down. the contact was able to drive the vehicle into the grass to slow the vehicle down. the vehicle was towed to a mechanic who stated that the c-clip was missing which disconnected the brake shaft from the pedal. the c-clip has been repaired. the contact is aware of the safety risk since the brake failure could have caused a crash. the current and failure mileages were 53,000. updated 10/06/09. *lj updatd 10/08/09

letter from congressman carney on behalf of constituent re his concerns about rusted brake lines in gm vehicles. *nj the consumer experienced sudden and unexpected brake failure due to a metal brake line that had ruptured and was rusted. the brake pedal went all the way to the floor. fortunately, the consumer was able to bring the vehicle to a slow and safe stop. an inspection revealed all the brake lines under the drivers side door were severely rusted and were leaking braking fluid. the dealership replaced the brake lines to the front brakes, the master cylinder, abs control module as well as the rear backing plates and right rear caliper that were severely rusted. *jb

AIR BAGS

2004 chevy avalanche sir light (service airbag) remains on constantly after several attempts to repair at chevy dealer. when the service airbag light is on, the airbag system will not deploy airbags if involved in an accident. no death or injury yet and hopefully will not be in an accident while driving back and forth to the dealer over and over again. but how much money and time should you spend on something that is out of your control but could cost you your life if an event occurs that you need the airbag to deploy. tw*

tl*the contact owns 2004 chevrolet avalanche. the contact was driving 55 mph when the rpms increased. the contact had difficulty switching gears and the vehicle lost power. the windshield wipers would not shut off unless the contact restarted the vehicle. the transmission and the water pump failed completely. the driver side door handle broke and the contact cannot get out of the vehicle unless she climbs over the passenger seat. the speedometer only displayed 10 and 20 mph whenever it was cold outside. the failure mileage was 23,965 and the current mileage was 97,323.
