FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE

fuel pump failed on bmw 335i. on the freeway, car information panel indicated "engine malfunction -- reduced power" and the car went into a limp mode, with radically low power and rough running. because of the prevailing speed of rush hour traffic, my inability to maintain normal freeway speed did not seriously endanger me or other motorists. i am reporting this failure because i have learned that the same failure is epidemic with all applications of the engine in my car. injuries are inevitable if the defective fuel pump is not redesigned.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

my 2009 bmw 335i has a significant lag-time between when the gas pedal is depressed and when the car starts to accelerate. this is most noticeable when the car is at a dead stop. when i press the gas pedal, it takes about one full second before it lunges forward suddenly. this is a consistent problem which i can replicate every time i press on the gas pedal from a dead stop. this is very scary and dangerous, especially when i am trying to make a left turn, or when i am trying to avoid an accident. i have no control over how quickly my car responds to the gas pedal. i have noticed this since i purchased my car in august 2009. my bmw dealership and another bmw dealership told me that this is normal. i highly doubt that this is normal. this is clearly abnormal to me. several bulletin boards on the internet also report the same problem.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE

i was driving uphill last night and an engine light came on and the navigation screen said reduced power. i had to shift down into third gear and put my foot to the floor and the car hardly kept going up the hill. i turned it off and then on again and all seemed fine. on the way home the same lights came on but then the service engine soon light came on and began flashing and the car began shaking and idling very rough. the car was very hard to drive and had almost no power whatsoever. problem occurred again this morning and the car was taken to the dealership on a flat bed. this would be extremely dangerous if it happened at highway speeds or on an open stretch of highway with little access to services and/or repair facilities. the dealership says it is the high pressure fuel pump.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE

i own a 2009 bmw 335. it was purchased in early 2009. prior to the failure of the part, there was no sign of trouble. while i was driving on the freeway in southern california, my car started to lose power. concurrent with that power loss, the "service engine soon" light appeared on my instrument cluster. additionally, an icon (it looked like a transmission) lit up as well. when the power loss first occurred, i was in the fast lane on the freeway. i had to work extremely quick to get to the other side of the freeway, for fear that someone would hit me from behind (as my car slowed down). i eventually made it to the other side of the freeway without incident. i pulled off to the side of the road and turned the car off. i eventually called a tow truck and had my car towed to the nearest bmw dealership. turns out that my high-pressure fuel pump failed. i did not have any warning prior to the failure. the dealership replaced the high-pressure fuel pump. since then, i have put 5500 miles on the car. my fuel pump is still working properly.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE

the fuel pump on my 2009 bmw 335i has failed and i believe it's starting to fail again but everytime i take it in they say it's fine and they cant do anything until it actually fails. problem with that is if it fails on the highway doing 70mph then i'm going to be in a world of hurt. the pump has already failed once.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE

failure of high pressure fuel pump with resulting loss of power and drivable. failure has occurred once so far at 10 months of ownership and approximately 9000 miles. initial repair was a software update. this repair was of no benefit and shortly thereafter the car was returned to the dealer and the hpfp was replaced with a remanufactured hpfp.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE

the car's high pressure fuel pump failed on freeway on-ramp acceleration leading to a near rear-end collision by a following car. this failure was preceded by long-crank starting and engine racing on starting. the hpfp was replaced at 6,000 miles (10/09). at 12,000 miles the software was reprogrammed. (6/10) the dealer says it is replacing the hpfp again. this appears to be an ongoing problem with the bmw 335i engine starting with the 2007 models as reported on this website. according to a survey of 300+ owners nearly 50% have experienced this problem.

i own a 2009 bmw 335i which has the type n54 engine. i have owned this car since may 2009. i have had 2 high pressure fuel pumps replaced. the last malfunction just occurred as i was at highway speed 65mph + and the engine went into the limp home mode. because of this mode the car had a drastic reduction of power, without any warning. i was lucky i was able to get to the right lane and limp to dealership with a top speed of 50mph. this was a dangerous situation to me and other drivers on highway. the n54 engine is a major issue for bmw, their own service advisors state that almost 60% of these engines have had fuel pump malfunctions, resulting in replacement.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE

2009 bmw 335i has had engine run at half power numerous times. only once was it able to be taken to the dealership in time for them to retrieve any diagnostic information and act on it at that point in time, however it has suffered similar behavior since this point and supposedly they are unable to retrieve data, even within a week or two of the event occurring and state that nothing is wrong with it. the first time this happened i was making a left turn and was relying on the acceleration of the vehicle to make a turn at a reasonable speed prior to traffic arriving and the car simply gave out and reduced itself to half power (per the error on the screen). quite nearly got me in an accident. the filing date on this is the most recent, to my knowledge, of the incident occurring. i wasn't aware of this site until now so it's possible the date is off by as much as 4-6 weeks.

i buy my 2009 bmw 335i with 39,700 miles, full bmw service was done the same day, my next service was at 49,000 miles however at around 48,000 miles. when driving to work on the highway going 50mph i had to move over to the passing lane and when i attempted to accelerate about at 65mph the car started to shake very bad and the engine light came on and i loss power had to slow down to 20-25mph could have cause an accident as i was in the faster lane and car slow down rapidly!! thank god i was able to move all the way over to the slower lane with little issue. after i pulled over i turned the car off and open the hood as my oil temp was just about at 250*, under hood temps was hot but not anything crazy, everything looks good so i started the car and it idle like normal and the engine light was now gone, i close the hood and was able to drive the car like normal, so i took the car to the local bmw dealer in my work area and they told me the issue i am having is cause by the hpfp high pressure fuel pump, so they reply it and everything seems normal for another 2,000 miles then i had the same issue again! this time i was heading home and it happened when i was trying to accelerate with moving traffic omg that was bad all most cause a major accident with all the cars, trucks behind me had to slow down rapidly .. was going 30mph and tried to speed up to 60 .. at around 45mph car lost power and was shaking worst than the first time this happened, engine light came on, again thank god i was able to pull over, i turn the car off and waited for 5-6min than turn it back on, this time the engine light remain on, my oil temp was around 190*, the car still idle and drive as normal even with the engine light on, took it to my local bmw dealer in my home area and they found this time is two bad injectors one at cylinder 1 and the other at cylinder 5 .cost of repair $1.1k. *js

ENGINE

it is a very dangerous problem with this vehicle that bmwna is well aware of, but insists that it is "normal behavior" for my car/transmission. i brought the car into the dealer, and they were able to reproduce it, but they were told by bmw that this was "normal behavior." the problem occurs when you slow down- like for a turn, but do not come to a complete stop. the dct transmission seems to have trouble figuring out what gear to select because when you step on the gas to accelerate, there is a very significant delay in the onset of power- up to 2-3 seconds. by this time, the driver is usually really digging into the throttle. the transmission finally picks a gear, which results in the car suddenly lurching forward, sometimes invoking the anti-skip control. the danger in this behavior occurs when making a turn into on-coming traffic after slowing down to around 10-15 mph. after the turn, the car is positioned in the traffic lane, but you have no power to accelerate into the flow of traffic. the oncoming cars are now closing in on your car at a fast rate, and you're basically stuck. this situation is most pronounced in the "auto" mode of the dct transmission, but also occurs to a lesser degree while in the manual mode when you select second gear in preparation for the turn. it is also very repeatable in both modes. these problems started occurring after a previous recall on this transmission where the engine would stall under hard braking or not shift under hard braking. the recall fixed that problem, but introduced this problem, which occurs almost every day whereas the previous problem only occurred during a specific situation. thank you for looking into this dangerous matter.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING

the brake lights, turn signal lights do not function properly. several led are not functional. bmw is aware of the problem, but refuses to fix this safety issue. see sib 63-06-10. this is a very common problem on this series of cars. search bimmer forums and you will see many people trying to figure out how to repair these lights because of the immense costs in replacing them. this needs to be fixed at the manufacturer level. bmw says that it is because of a poor connection within the light. they replace both of them if the vehicle is under warranty, but refuse to do anything for anyone out of warranty. i would like to request an investigation into this refusal of bmw to do anything about this obvious and dangerous safety issue. they did a recall on the 5 series car for the same problem. don't you think they would also recall the 3 series. i guess they are trying to get out of fixing their manufacturing problems. there should be a warranty of merchanability regarding these lights. if they are not fit for their intended purpose, then the mfg should correct it. they say the new lights have a anti vibration gasket that helps. so, they are aware of how to fix it. they just need to do it.
